I'd love to hear Beyond Here again, that was probably one of the best so far. Good playing by Mark and a good vocal by Bob (after a while at least).

But some of these have certainly been less impressive. Not easy when there's no rehearsal, Bob makes it difficult for Mark for sure  ;D

Some of the songs are really not fitting either, if the point is to let Mark do something meaningful on the guitar. Love Sick would be a good choice, lots of atmosphere and depth, fitting for some Les Paul.

Already 12 songs until Leipzig concert, it would make a whole cd, kind of "Dylan and Knopfler live"

Finally someone found a way to get Mark to play more than his stock 12-15 song catalog.

Many thanks twm!     It would have been much better, however, if Rolling Stone had chosen a better clip for the video.  "Baby Blue" doesn't give MK a chance to show his guitar playing and Bob sounds like err.........Bob! ::)

Too bad they only played one song from their past cooperations. Blind Willie McTell. Such a same. It would be great to hear something from Slow train or Infidels. No, no, just slow train for me. Maybe even Death is not the end...
But one of my favorites, excellent in providing many empty spaces to be filled by MK's guitar, would What was it you wanted. Such a great song. For those of you that have not heard it, give it a listen. In fact listen to the whole Oh, Mercy record.
Title: Re: Songs played by Bob Dylan with Mark Knopfler
Post by: MarkB on November 07, 2011, 09:00:19 PM
Oh Mercy is a great album, one thing it has in common with Infidels is some unusual choices by Bob of which songs to include and leave off the album. Dylan didn't include Series Of Dreams, Dignity or Born In Time on the record. Born In Time was re-recorded and appeared on the next album(Under The Red Sky, one of Bob's most under-rated albums imo.)
One of the highlights of Bob's book Chronicles is the chapter focusing on the writing and recording of Oh Mercy.

Agreed. It is a brilliant album, I guess it was criticised at the time because the songs were not what a lot of critics expected from Bob, I remember seeing Bob play Cats In The Well at a show a few years ago and it was one of the highlights of the gig.

OH MERCY is an album I play quite often. Perhaps I could have done without "Disease of Conceit" but songs like "Most Of the Time" and "Shooting Star" just hit me every time. Some dislike Lanois's soundscape approach to the producer's role but he caught Dylan's vocal delivery well and, as someone said earlier, there are some terrific out-take songs. And the alternate takes of some of the songs are really good as well. I have never really warmed to UNDER THE RED SKY.The nursery rhyme imagery doesn't put me off and neither does the basic r'n'b sound (it is a nice contrast to its predecessor, perhaps a deliberate step away by Dylan) but I can't really say that there is one song that gets to me like the songs on OH MERCY. The only one that I find myself humming in quiet periods is "Born In Time" but, as a piece of songwriting, that belongs to an earlier period,as has been stated already.

Pottel you are a devoted fan, your opinion is a bit biased. And anyway, we give too much credit to the critics when we say that they are to blame for poor sales or bad public opinion. I have seen albums skyrocket, regardless of the terrible beating from the critics. imnsho ( ;) ) a record sometimes has to be more than good. It has to be at the same wavelength with the world. Think of how much recorded music is out there. And it would be new to newcomers that listen to it for the first time. Only the date on the record would tip them off. In order for something new to sell, it has to have more qualities than good.

When I first got the video promo of "Series of Dreams" (1991), which I got from a musicbiz contact, it had the whole thing including the full credits. I noticed, at the end, a very long number. Even though it had no spaces in it, it looked like it started with a Los Angleles area code. So, as I was very impressed with the promo (clearly put together by a Dylan fan, I waited a few hours to allow for the time zone difference and called the number. It was indeed the video production company and the guy told me about filming the very brief sequence with Dylan in New York. When I aksed about the rest, he told me it had actually been done by a guy in Dublin and gave me the number. It now being very late here, I called Dublin the next day and it was another video organization, this time part of the U2 set-up. Charlie, the guy in question, was off sick but, some days later, we got to talk about the how the video was put together, which was very interesting.

Later that year, my wife and I went to Dublin for the DS concerts at The Point. Charlie had invited me to call in advance the next time I was due to visit Dublin, so I did. Charlie picked us up from our hotel and took us on a tour of the city (with Lightning Hopkins cassettes in the car) and then to lunch in the restaurant at The Point. Mark and the band were nowhere to be seen but Christie Moore walked right by our table, as we sat there.

We also got to blag our way into the press reception for the ON EVERY STREET album (again no DS members around) but the (very dubious) point of this story is to provide another, if rather far-fetched, link between Mr Bob and Mark.

Yes, I do very much like "Series of Dreams". There are several different versions in circulation, some arising from editing/mixing decisions at Sony that may, in fact, have been errors.

Title: Re: Songs played by Bob Dylan with Mark Knopfler
Post by: arabia on November 21, 2011, 01:03:16 AM
Trying to Get to Heaven sounded really nice with Mark, he played the Red Strat, not sure if it was one of the signature Strats or the other red guitar some said he's been playing. I look forward to hearing it again. I saw my friend Romeo there so I know at least the Dylan part of the evening was well recorded.

Tonight was a night in which I didn't have tickets but I decided to go down the Apollo around 9, during the switch over to see if I could find a real cheap ticket. In the end I found a young man heading in late who asked ME if I needed a ticket :D so he let me have it for 20 pounds which was all I had with me. I got in just in time to see Bob and Mark take the stage.

Tomorrow I will be in for the whole show, really looking forward to seeing Mark and Co.

I always had the idea of making that compilation, but the criteria to choose the versions is quite complicated:

- The best sounding version
- The best played version

Which criteria may be the chosen?

And, when thats decided, the important part is that all the songs may be normalized to a same kind of sound, equalization etc etc to make the listening pleasent, considering we are talking about Dylan here...

Fantastic project.  Thank you Allen.    Would love to hear from you.   I just read an excellent book about one of your legendary national heroes.  Very excellent.

Also, should have said any new info since Dec2nd.
It's out there (or coming soon).
Only 18 songs to chose from but several appearances for most. Would make nice 2CD set (if you don't get too bored with Mk sound)

Song list:
01. Beyond here lies nothing (Bournemouth)
02. Leopard-skin pill-box hat (Luxembourg, Oberhausen, Mannheim, Munich, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg, Herning, Malm

Or "Sometimes Makes Three"?

Or even "Twogether"?

Or "May your song always be sung" fits quite well too.

It's a good idea BUT one that has unfortunately already been used. "May Your Song Always Be Sung  - The Songs of Bob Dylan" is the title of an official album of Dylan covers issued in Germany by BMG (catalogue number  74321 47088 2). It was compiled by the same guy who recently did the PURE DYLAN disc and, for a reason that I disremember, I'm included in the "thanks" at the end. This compilation includes the likes of Jose Feliciano, Bobby Bare, Jeff Healey, Carlene Carter, Nilsson, The Box Tops and Dream Syndicate. It ends with a version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Finland's own Leningrad Cowboys, accompanied by the Alexandrow Red Army Chorus - version to savour, I assure you!

Youth dreams.
Young at 70.
Thinking of youth.
Nothing crazy, nothing wild, just hit 70 and I feel fine.
Tea for two, none of them young. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

A compilation of the 'duets' played during the fall 2011 Sundown Of The Euro Tour.
Some 'solo' performances have been added as fillers.

Compilation made by Blindwilly & theTwinWithin. Artwork by StewART. (many thanks)
As you may see Stew did select the most moving picture of the Tour for the front of the artwork.

Thanks to all the tapers and uploaders who shared these shows with us.

OK, so I clicked on the link to the MK/BD compilation CD download and made an account with the website. I then clicked the "download" button and waited... and after timing out several times because it never connected, I gave up.
Then I tried the solo MK set list. The link worked properly on that one but, when I tried to download it using uTorrent, I didn't get a single byte of data after leaving it running in the "downloading" state for over 24 hours.
I must be doing something wrong; if anyone has a solution, I would truly appreciate it.

The latest edition of ISIS lists "The Glasgow Box", a three-CD bootleg from Crystal Cat. Disc One is devoted to Mark but the track listing isn't given. It has 12 tracks, though. Discs Two and Three are Dylan - I make it 24 tracks in all. To quote: "The sound is of quite outrageously good quality ... there is virtually no extraneous noise".  The CDs come in two jewel cases that slot into a laminated card outer sleeve. The discs are full colour and there are pin-sharp photos.

Apparently, Crystal Cat is working on a 6-CD box set from London but it doesn't say if it is limited to Dylan or not.

Look here for a scan of the box where MK set can be easily read

Thanks, Pottel, but I already have utorrent and have been doing what that cheesy little instructions video says to do this whole time. Has anyone been able to successfully download that MK/BD compilation?
