Title: A Vinyl Corner?
Post by: Love Expresso on July 31, 2016, 12:09:50 PM
I would like to ask what you folks think about opening a new section or corner about vinyl? I know there are some members very much into it (vgonis, Fletch, Dusty Valentino and a couple of others). I myself must admit that since a few weeks I honestly think about buying a record player again. I found my old LP's from Notting Hillbillies, Dylan, Dire Straits and some others (Shakin' Stevens anyone?) in the vaults of my Mom's house. Together with the nice 180 gr records from the MK box sets I start to love them again. Friends do collect them again, there are many stores selling them again and so on..

It could, but must not necessarily be about MK and DS but of course about any other artist, Sting and Pink Floyd come to mind for example because of current releases. Also hints, information or just drooling could be imaginable.

I was rereading Fletch's nice stories from last year's World Record Day and will go myself on April, 15th 2017. While watching a YouTube Video about vinyl washing machines yesterday a friend called me on the phone about some Tommy Emmanuel tickets in September and he mentioned by the way that he had been washing some dozens of his records during the morning. That coincidence gave me the initial idea for this thread.

So what do you think? ;)

Good idea.  I have a Greek edition LOG LP that requires a severe cleaning.

Also, I have a question maybe someone can help me with.  I am getting some distortion problems with my record player.  I've checked obvious things like connections and everything appears fine. :hmm

I spin a lot of vinyl, I also purchase a lot of new vinyl, it has its own warmth. As for you purchasing a turntable only you can decide
it does take some work to spend a night spinning vinyl as the average side is 20/25 mins, so you have to get up of your butt and clean the next record
and then change it.
I only play a complete side or I would be up and down every 4/5 mins changing tracks, think hard it can be worth it and remember the better the table and cartridge the better the sound.

Also, I have a question maybe someone can help me with.  I am getting some distortion problems with my record player.  I've checked obvious things like connections and everything appears fine. :hmm

DMG

Distortion is normally caused by dirty stylus, misalignment, incorrect VTA,  incorrect tracking weight or a worn out cartridge.

Good luck in tracking you problem and getting it sorted out.

When I was a teenager I used to spend hours and hours digging in my uncle´s vinyl collection. I remember how fascinated I was with some covers, specially "Difficult To Cure" by Rainbow, and many others...

I used to dig also in every record shop, looking at the covers and the back covers... the smell of vinyl  :lol

Last year by my birthday I got a turntable, one quite bad but that works, so I bought some vinyls to play them. I already had the DS and MK ones as there is something very special about vinyls, and having the DS and MK ones was mandatory LOL

Mine was the Calling Elvis maxisingle... I didn´t have any turntable at the time and I bought it the very same day it was released as, being in the shop, I noticed that "Millionaire Blues" wasn´t at the list of songs I read in a magazine for the next album...

This makes me remember about this other thread about turntables http://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=4134.msg94511#msg94511 (http://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=4134.msg94511#msg94511)

I have this one, that it´s not very good, but connected with a RCA (red and white) cable via the aux entry to my home cinema, sounds decent...

I know I should get a proper one but I use it very very rarely so...

A splendid idea LE!
Dmg check if your speakes are too close to your turntable, or on the same piece of furniture. Check your grounding cable. And also check for antiskating adjustment.

Thanks.  All done but to no avail. I think it needs professional technical adjustment.  I barely use it so reluctant to spend much money on it.  I've fiddled about with it myself with no success.

I still think it's a good idea to have a corner (@ your last post, Dusty :-) ) because I think vinyl will be of more and more interest in the future again . The thread that was brought up here again about record players shows that there was and might be more and more interest in the subject - and also an immense knowledge among some of the forumers around. Also the thread about World Record Day 2015 could be put there, and the one about the Pink Floyd Box as well.  We could import both these threads to the new made Corner and open a "general" board together with the two new ones or even better, don't do any boards at all, just "Vinyl"?

I didn't have a particular objection, just not convinced there will be enough traffic to justify a separate forum. Prove me wrong guys!

Hey LE, great idea! Still love finding old vinyl bargains. As an aside, I dont think i posted here this year, but I really enjoy the buzz of attending a local record shop on Record Store Day and this year was great too! This year gave me some nice (& colourful) releases from Etta James, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylans EP (prior to the full LP release) and a few more too, such a great concept.

I heard that a LP version of the Altamira soundtrack was planned but it didn´t came out yet...

I also heard that GH and STP would be released in LP soon, but the same...

Ragpickers and All the roadrunning were released in such a limited editions that it´s difficult and expensive to find them in LP  :hmm

The Shangri-La LP is available at Amazon.de  used for 240 Euro or something.

Would love to have proper (double) LP's of STP and RPD. And Golden Heart as well of course.

@Fletch: Pleasure!  :wave

Now with the vinyl craze, everything gets re-issued. So probably ragpicker's dream and all the roadrunning will be re-isued.  Neck and neck was reissued recently from Music on vinyl. So there is hope for the vinyl obsessed. Despite the fact that spending a money to get a digital recording on vinyl to play through a system that costs 20 times the vinyl, might be problematic. I believe that vinyl is wonderful, but the come back of it, is more of a hype. I see people everyday that don't even know how to handle a turntable, coming to buy vinyl. That would be lovely, if only vinyl cost as much as 5-10 Euros. With prices ranging over 20-30 Euros for a new release, that you actually pay for the hype (they call it Limited, heavy weight, colored, numbered etc.) and not the fidelity, this is becoming annoying for the true vinyl aficionados.

Funny and true in what you say.  I recall a news report where the reporter interviewed some guy in a record store purchasing some LP's and he admitted he didn't even own a turntable, nor did he intend to buy one!  He simply bought them due to the hype and artwork.  Eh?  :hmm

At least people are paying for music again. And getting excited about it. If it upsets a few cork sniffing audiophiles then it's a price worth paying IMO.

Yeah, I thought about it. Apparently Mark signs so many things that he doesn't bother about aesthetic side of signing.

The most funny one I seen was his signature in BLACK marker on a BLACK part of the photo. You can see only 1mm of the signature LOL.

OK, so let's talk about vinyl!
Just received this set: https://www.discogs.com/Dire-Straits-Demos-Rarities/release/8104549

Nice work aesthetically, although all recordings have been officially and unofficially  available and in the demo cases, I think in better quality.

That bootleg "record company" also released Leeds 78 last year in three different version, green, blue and red coloured vinyls, easily to find in eBay.

Ok that was what I initially meant, are there still vinyl bootlegs produced? I don't care for bootlegs in general but love it when they are presented in a nice way that shows some love for details. Nice idea about those three different colours.

Yes, many bootleg things are still released in vinyl. There was a period that the releases were very few, but the last couple of years, together with the general vinyl comeback, more and more bootlegs appear. Usually they are very cheapish made pressings with a   plain sleeve or picture sleeve with no inners but the final price reflects that and is OK as well, from 13-20 Euros, retail.  But some are quite lavish. The DS ones belong to the rather lavish ones, and the price shows this.

I haven't seen any DS/Knopfler bootlegs for a while now but from many years back - I'm going to the early/mid '90s - I went to record fayres and bought these (among others):

Yeah.  I think I bought most of them without knowing they were available on any other format.  It was only just after the OES tour after all that I acquired them.  I think the MacKay '86 one is only on vinyl.

Nice photos indeed! I don't have the box set, in vinyl, but I think I have it in CD, but a single disc.  The colored ones I have but in different colour, Once upon in white and the 85 one in shades of green. There are a couple of records I have (transcription ones) that I value more, since they are interview with MK and in a way official, but not for general release.
