Gr8 Live Un-released Dire Straits rarities.
« on: November 17, 2011, 07:54:08 PM »
I remember on one of my very early bootleg tapes, these great rare songs that were played live, but never ended up on any album.

Here they are for your enjoyment. :) 8)

In My Car.

Me & My Friend.

Real Girl.

Bernadette.

Making Movies.         (Skip to 5.44 for song) ;)

I'm sure most people here have heard them all before, but for those who have not. ENJOY. :)

Cheers   BBB

And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles.

Hey, 3B, thanks very much. I hadn't heard the car song and hadn't seen the extended version of Making Movies with the quick interviews.

Thanks!

...and there are also

- Sucker For Punishment (MK is reading the lyrics in that 1981(?) documentary)
- Suicide Towers

...somewhere out there.

I'm sure there are some soundboard recordings of these songs gathering dust on Mark's shelf or in his shed just behind those christmas decoration trumpery.

I love these songs, they are so raw and yet also quite beautiful to me.
Ah, those days where he drove the tourbus and provided the catering and ironing for the whole band.  ;D ;D ;D

Good stuff! I've never heard "Making Movies" before..although it seems like what would have been the title cut..became "Expresso Love". I was waiting for Mark to shout out "Hey Maestro!".

According to M. Oldfield's book, it's Suicide Tower wich evolved in Expresso love

Hey, 3B, thanks very much. I hadn't heard the car song and hadn't seen the extended version of Making Movies with the quick interviews.

In my car was played live in late 79, and is only available on the Boston bootleg (8 september 1979)

Making movies is only avalaible on the BBC Arena documentary.
The audio version on bootlegs is the same version, but edited

Real Girl is such a great song.

Oh yeah, love that too.  Barbarella's '78 is a great version.

I'd kill my own mother to have the complete recording of Making Movies, a masterpiece. So sad at the end as it fades and Ed starts speaking. This was the era when songs had three or four sections so I bet there's more to it.

I would love to hear the rehearsals for the BIA sessions before they flew out to air studios or even the out takes from the studio sessions. I am sure recordings exist somewhere but they will probably never see the light of day. When you look at Dylan and Marley and other artists , so much of their stuff leaked out over time, its a shame it is not the case for Dire Straits. I seem to remember a big hoo har when that Leeds soundboard from 78 (?) surfaced in the late 90s - almost as if it was one that got away...

isn't the arena stuff from march the third?
Also, I seem to remember to have heard in my car on ore then the one Boston boot....no way to check my collection right now

Well, according to JVT's site (which is the more accurate IMO) the arena stuff is from "Whood Wharf, London UK on 4th - 7th March 1980", and Boston features "the only known performance of In my car"

and when you browse his other 79 gigs, you don't find any one with this song

However, Pottel if you have 79 shows that even JVT don't have, I would be very interested  :D
