New here - Straits 78
« on: July 19, 2012, 05:03:53 PM »
Hi guys,

I'm new here and just found this place.
I've been a Knopfler admirer for some time and mostly like the older Dire Straits stuff.
The two first albums are realy it for me!
With a friend of mine, a real die hard Knopfler fan, we started out a band just for fun to play the earlier Dire Straits stuff.
Actualy when they were just a simple four piece band.
We call ourselves "Straits 78" and are located in Den Helder Holland.

Hi and welcome!

I saw the video! Nice, but you need a headband definitely! Remember what Mark did because of sweating!

No head/wristbands or carnaval clothing for me thanks :-)
Just a red Fender Stratocaster will do fine.
We only do the first two albums (hence the name Straits 78)
So there's an end to what we do (well maybe B-sides of the singles).

When someone comes over to us after a performance and says : "i know the songs from the early days and hearing them now i'm going to get me the CD's right away".  That's when our job is done :-)
There are millions of them sold worldwide so a lot of people might recognize the old songs (well hopefully)
We are playing for them (and for ourselves ofcourse).
Our gigs are mostly half an hour or maybe an hour.

Advice from guitarist on how to realy cut through with those clean solo's are welcome.
I'm always having some difficulties with that.
I'm using a 2001 Fender Stratocaster 57 USA Reissue.
MXR Dynacomp   compressor (output fully clockwise to boost the amp)
Ernie Ball VP junior Volumepedal
Boss DD20 Giga Delay pedal
Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb amplifier
D'Addario EXL 110 strings.

Also the tempo of the songs are always difficult to grab, they are generaly played too fast.

Hi Andrew,
Great, great, If we'd live in the same area, I would like to play with you & your band, the two first records are also my favorites, especially the guitar sound !

Your guitar playing is really good and so knopflerish !
What is the color of your guitar ? Candy Apple Red ?

Thanks stratocasteph!
The color of my guitar is Dakota red.
Not very common on the USA reissues and only made from approx. 2000 till 2003
Had a hard time finding an original one.

I use tonelab ST too

you can listen to my recordings here :http://soundcloud.com/jfstrat/sets/tranches-musicales/

I asked you if you used an effect on SBK, because I found your tone a little bit "liquid", but it's maybe the rhythm guitarist tone that give this impression
