Privateering - the reviews
« on: August 24, 2012, 06:19:23 PM »
Some reviews are starting to show now so I just thought it would be a good idea to post and discuss the findings somewhere.

"My idea of heaven is a place where the Tyne meets the Delta, where folk music meets the blues."

Very nice indeed.  Liked the bit about "online communities.". You don't think he meant us do you? ;D
"I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order."

Eloquent and understated, with a nod to the past

Despite more than a quarter of a century passing since the release of Dire Straits

Hmm...

Humble... low key....subtle.... whispered vocals...

all the usual vocabulary that is used when it comes to MK but does NOT fit on this record in my opinion. Too easy. Pristine is a good word to desribe it, yes.

Just seen the review in Uncut the mag that had a big feature on Mark last month. Afraid I didn't buy it, so can't quote verbatim, but it was pretty favourable, more so than the 7/10 grading would suggest - they seem less generous with their marks than other reviews.

The new issue of the German Rolling Stone magazine has a short but nice feature, saying MK bought the van specially for the album cover.
But alas, the Face on the Cover of the Rolling Stone is ... well you guess. The feature on BD's 50 years in music is quite enjoyable, though - amazing to think that MK heard that first album back then and now they're on stage together!

Let's just be greatful that the two of them, Dylan and Knopfler, are still going strong. Unlike other legends, they keep writing great songs when they could have retired a long time ago. Hats off!

And of course Knopfler would deserve the RS cover just as much as Dylan does. But hey, if it weren't for Dylan, he might never have started out at all, so let's thank Bob for the inspiration!

PS: I'm quite sure that Dylan's new album will be a treat, like Mark's.

Sorry Val, it doesn't seem to be online yet, just the app version: http://www.rollingstone.de/magazin/features/article116425/rolling-stone-im-september-die-neue-app-ist-da.html

There's also a review of the album (3 1/2 stars), "the most convincing album since "All the roadrunning" ".
