It was played in the final shows of 1979.

It us said that Solid rock is about her too, and the "three more fingers point to you" lines are David, Pick and John...

It's just my opinion. but I think this is a typical case of people looking to read more into a lyric than there is.
The line is just a clever observation, that when you point your finger, your other 3 fingers are pointing back at you
i.e, when you try to blame someone else for something going wrong, you are probably as much to blame yourself,
Now that may be aimed at Holly, but I don't think there is anything more to it than that.
When you point your finger 'cause your plan fell through you've got 3 more fingers pointing back at you.

But a spoonful of forgiveness
Goes a long, long way
And we all should do our best

To get on-topic again, I was astonished to read about It Never Rains being mentioned in this context. Is this information confirmed that this song has to do with this punk lady? I would never have thought that it was about a love story, but with that in mind, the lyrics are somewhat clearer now.

LE

I'm not expert in lyrics, but The Oldfield book says something like that, about the recording of the LOG album :

Marks claims that It never rains comes from nothing and has nothing to do with others songs or subjects, but it seems to close a trilogy about a "disappointment in love"
(can't remember exactly, but it's the idea)

and at the beginning of the LOG tour, the 3 songs were played in a row
http://www.oneverybootleg.nl/111282.htm

and the Oldfield books insists in the 1st chapter, about the gigs in Wembley 82, saying something like :
and then they are playing Romeo and Juliet, closing a trilogy about a love story which failed

yes and it was recorded as a demo in early 80 with David on guitar and backing vocals.
You can hear it on the BBC arena documentary

About Holly Vincent, I have a theory, but of course it's just my opinion, and I have no proof of that :

around late78/early79, you can see pictures showing Mark with a neck lace, like this one :
http://www.gettyimages.fr/detail/photo-d'actualit%C3%A9/mark-knopfler-from-dire-straits-performs-live-on-photo-dactualit%C3%A9/94103657

or on the live at the BBC cover

or in Rockpalast :

he doesn't have it on Chorus TV show on 14th october 78 :

he has it in Hamburg 28th october 78 :

http://www.mk-guitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/4404294895_7ff88fd268_o.jpg

and he doesn't have it anymore on the final gig in december 79, after they broke up :

I think that this neck lace could be a gift from Holly Vincent, or at least is related with her.

So their relationship could have started between 14 and 28 october 78... ::)

I think that where do you think you're going was already composed at this time (demo have been recorded during autumn, can't remember which month, I have to check on Oldfield book), so thats' why I guess this song is not about Holly Vincent, although Ed Bicknell explains that Marks sung it like never before in late 79 during US tour when they broke up (Holly told it to Mark on phone juste bfgore going on stage). But the exact date of the gig is unknown.
Maybe it's on a bootleg we all know...

JF, my question wasn't a criticism.   The thread kept referring to WOL as Walk of Life, which doesn't seem to fit in that period, but Water of Love certainly does.  Perhaps I read too fast, but I didn't see it mentioned, so I just suggested it.   :)
