Actually I can't trust to CD with
"I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order."

An extra 30s on Silvertown sounds very nice indeed though!  :P

A late reply, but I just received this promo CD this week and can tell you that Silvertown Blues is unfortunately (!!) NOT 6 minutes long as the back cover indicates:

http://oneverybootleg.nl/officially_owned_stp15.htm

Kind regards,
Jeroen

Jeroen, is there a way to tell if such a disc is official? Especially with the "acetates".

Thanks for the confirmation Jeroen.  I think we all had our doubts!

I heard that a very very rare cd acetate exists that has not only the STP songs we know but "What it is" has the extra verse that was available in a Mexican cdsingle, a different version of "Speedway" and "Red Staggerwing" and "Donkeytown", that originally were planned to be released in STP, but in the end were shelved until the release of "All the Roadrunning" cd with Emmylou Harris.

I never saw it by myself but it would be a great jewel to find!
You might get lucky, now and then

That would be interesting.  Good info!

" is there a way to tell if such a disc is official? Especially with the "acetates". "

The STP promo I listed is no acetate but a silver pressed CD, but I get your point. To be honest, I have no idea how to say if a promo is originally released by the record company. On the other hand, I think it would be strange to release fake promos as I doubt that there would be really a market for that. When someone releases a fake promo, the only obvious reason for me would be to make money out of it. And since the STP promo I listed is very hard to find, I can only assume it is an official promo released in small quantaties. If it was released to make money out of it, I would expect that we could find it very easily on Ebay for example. When it comes to acetates promos, it is a different case I think as everybody can burn a CD-R and make a print on the CD with a printer. I would not know how to identify a CDR promo as official or fake. Nowadays, it seems more and more acetates are made, way cheaper compared to the silver pressed ones which are made with injection moulding and requires a relative expensive mould to start with.

Thank you Jeroen! I think that some MK acetates had a special inaudible serial number, which could be retrieved from the company in case of a leak, that pointed exactly to the original recipient. I guess if someone wanted to make acetates it would be easy as you mention. I miss the special made vinyl promo releases (there are DS singles with mono versions of songs, something rarely mentioned here!)

What would be the reason to release a mono version as a promo? To make it less atractive compared to stereo so people who own the promo also buy the official release?

In the late 70ies and early 80ies, radio was still very strong. And despite the use of hi-fi systems or the "modern stereo boom boxes, most households had old fashion mono radios. As such a mono version that usually has more "punch" was more suitable! The singles had both stereo and mono versions, so the Djs, knowing their target groups better, could decide which one to play. Of course most groups went with stereo anyway, so DS are one of the last examples to issue mono versions, but they did!
