Jack Sonni
« on: April 18, 2016, 12:10:35 AM »
He is a extraordiry rithm guitarrist.
He toured DS in 1985-1986 and played in all BIA album songs.
He broke up with DS in 1988 befor Mandela`s day Concert because he became a father of twins.
I have the idea he gave up for other causes.

Do any know the story?

warm regards

he didn't play in all album songs, only on the man's too strong on synth guitar (power chords after "the man's too strong")
he tried a rhythm guitar part on ride across the river, but Mark didn't like it. I guess it was likely the same part he played later live
his other contribution to the album is that his foam green strat was used by Mark on one's world

gear on the BIA album:

I think it's not fair to say he "broke up with DS". he was a hired musician like many others, and then the BIA tour ended, his "job" ended. he said it in an itw "when the job is over it's over".
of course if he had'net been father of twins in 88, I guess he would have played at Mandela, but that does not mean he would have been hired again in 90 for the OES studio recording

As Mark said at the opening mandela`s song "walk of life", Jack declined his job sudenly.
Mark had to ask Eric to fill Jack`s place
I know Mark hired Jack for BIA tour, but, it was one of the best band tour ever

I have my doubts Jack would've played at Mandela anyway.  EC was an artist and a big name that the organisers probably wanted to play at the event.  The twins thing was a convenient excuse.  It could also have been payback for Mark backing him on his tour.  I kind of feel sorry for Jack if indeed he was snubbed.

Ec was(is) a star, no doubt. But EC had some drug problems by the beginning of the 80s
He played in Prince trust 1985 1986 and 1988
Up to 1988 EC reactivated his carreer
He backed DS at Mandela. It was a poor scene when you see EC backing MK.
Mark joined him at EC tour 1988.
After that EC skyrocketed his life again.

It wasn't a poor scene imho. MK gave him all the credit and space to play his part and style into the songs.

sorry I disagree.
EC had drug problems in early 70s not 80s.
it's Pete Townshend who brought him again in the limelight with the rainbow concert (73)
EC begun a new carreer with 461 ocean bvd in 74.
yes indeed journeyman was big hit album compared to august, but he had toured in 85, 86...

Mark started to tour with EC in 87, so before the mandela gig.

the mandela gig was not a "poor scene" !
I don't see as he "backed" DS. he was a guest, and what a guest ! they even played one of his songs,  and he took clearly the limelight on WOL and MFN imho

Jack seems to have abandoned his "tell all" book so I guess we'll never know. If MK had  already decided to ditch Jack it seems bizarre that he would give him a name check in front of a massive global audience when only a handful of people would even have known who Jack was.

EC had alcohol addiction during the 70's and 80's.
He's sober since November 87.
