Title: When MK lived in NYC
Post by: jbaent on March 30, 2015, 11:03:31 AM
Hello.
A dear friend of mine is going to visit Manhattan this summer and as he knew that I Was writting the book about London and the places related to MK and DS, he asked me about the places relared to MK in NYC, and I had to admitt that we know very little about MK living in NYC...

We just know that he was very friend with Rudy Pensa and we know where the shop it is, and I think that´s all. He used to live there with his second wife and having a house at the same time in London, but we don't have an idea of in which part of the city he used to live, and I find it interesting, trying to track MK in NYC...

We also know that he was in NYC in a big store when he heard the conversation that inspired him to create MFN but we don´t know which store, and things like that...

I would like that this thread works to put some light to the time when MK was living at NYC and try to TRACK his steps there, just for fun, as he doesn´t live there anymore, there is no privacy invasion.

I can´t recall...

But about where he lived, I found this, from the SOS compilation interview:

*Robert Sandall : "There's a live version here of 'Your Latest Trick'. That song?"
*Mark Knopfler : "That is again from living in New York. If you've lived there for a while, which I did, or part of the time anyway, you start to breathe-in the city really. The garbage trucks are like these great monsters that roar through the early hours of the night. I'd be coming home from the studio - I was doing long hours then - and I'd come home late at night. I'd ride on a bicycle flat out down the Avenue back home down to the Village, and you'd see these things about the city, roaring, just like great beasts. I think I got the idea from some literature somewhere, I don't remember what it was, but the idea of a "trick" has a number of possibilities. I like the idea of songs that have a number of possibilities, people do different things with them. Its really just playing with ideas...with that song, to be honest, I don't think that I was being specific about anything, it was just carrying on the ideMK : With some songs, you've started, so you finish, and it's really amazing. If you do section A, section B, can start dictating itself - it really just seems that ought to be there - and then C, and so on and so forth. It's a mysterious thing really that you're turning into, but you have to respect it in a way. You have to let the thing go where it wants to go, and you can't necessarily always force the issue - you finish it off and sign it."

So, from this, can we say he lived at The Village? I don´t know much about NYC so I don´t know what part of the city really is...

From Rolling Stone:

With his second wife, the former Lourdes Salamone (he was briefly married during his university days), Knopfler splits his home life between apartments in New York's Greenwich Village and London's West End.

Might not fit what you are looking for and might be quite an impossible visit but Monteleone has his workshop in Islip.

According to this wikipedia entry, track where MK lived in NYC is as easy as this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Street_%28Manhattan%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_Street_%28Manhattan%29)

Any of you can add anything else about MK in NYC?

This was funny  :)

http://rollingstoneindia.com/mark-knopfler%E2%80%99s-second-act/2/ (http://rollingstoneindia.com/mark-knopfler%E2%80%99s-second-act/2/)

“At that time,” Knopfler goes on, “I was living half the time in New York and half in London. I think Bob quite liked walking the streets of Greenwich Village again. He used to come round to our house on Bank Street armed against the cold in a fur hat, long blue cashmere coat and biker boots. I’d make a pot of coffee and we’d play pool.”

Quite a nice quote, LOL

I wonder is the store that inspired MFN was close to his house.

He also says that him coming back home from the studio on his bike inspired Your latest trick, I wonder which studio it was to also guess that way back home

Edit: MK used to work a lot at the Power Station Studios, now Avatar Studios, so the bike ride from work to home must have been this 14 minutes ride: http://goo.gl/maps/3Lyd6 (http://goo.gl/maps/3Lyd6)

Quite nice!

Me too, but Mk said in the interview for the SOS compilation "I'd ride on a bicycle flat out down the Avenue back home down to the Village" so it looks like the route he used to do was that  :think

Sometimes you wanna get home as early as possible, LOL, but the river route would be nicer.

On the BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans show where Mark was a guest with Nile Rogers of Chic, they talked about New York a lot. Nile was working in the Power Station by day and Mark by night, so their paths crossed. Would love to hear a collaboration between those two, it would be off the wall.  I am sure you can still listen again to the show on the BBC website.

Pottel, in that article it's said the name of the street and the number of the house, actually is the source that uses the Wikipedia entry to say the number of the house.

so it would be this appartment, not with the 'A' and not the one with the red door but the one in between.

Do we know exactly in what time period (from when to when) Mk lived in New York? I remember a Notting Hillbillies Album radio interview around 1990 where I said that Boris used to come by occasionally and train for the US Open on Mark's tennis court if I remember correctly?

In that article I mentioned to Pottel it says that MK bought that house as a wedding present to Lourdes, if my memory serves, that was on 1983 and I don´t know when they divorced, but I guess that after the OES tour so probably, at least MK; left that house around that time.

I think Mark started to live in us prior to 83.

Jack Sonni could probably give us some light about that time as they were quite close then.

In the US, tax and land parcel ownership information is a matter of public record. I'm posting this for only that exact reason i.e. anyone can look this up. Mark purchased 36 Bank St. from Lionel Chute, who seems to be a relatively unknown actor, in November of 1982 for $319K. He satisfied the mortgage in full in November of 1985. (Remember, he toured the NYC area the month prior.) He then sold it for an undisclosed amount in December of 1993. Now, the deed doesn't specifically state Mark's name of course. His trust at the time was a company named "Charisong Inc.", whose sole employees were...Mark & Lourdes Knopfler.  :P  Charisong Inc. was dissolved in 1994.

Dan, is there anyway to find out where MK lived in NY before he purchased that house? Just in case that wasnt his first house in the city.

I searched around but couldn't find anything else. If he rented before that,  there won't be any record of it. I think it's more likely that he took extended holidays to NY and didn't actually live there until he bought 36 Bank St.

Maybe we can ask Jack Sonni about it, as it's likely that MK at least spent periods of time in NYC before he got married, as I've read that Rudy Pensa and Jack Sonni were MK friends already in 1980.

"your latest trick" idea comes from MK coming back home from the Power Station Studios in NYC, and I wonder which other songs from that time are influenced from MK living there.

Yesterday I was listening to "The way it always starts" and thought that I might take a look at the lyrics because it can be related to NY too, maybe not, but the reference to the Taxi horns might be related

Definitely. I never thought to look this up before. I even ate a place a few years back literally a block from Bank St and explored that neighborhood afterwards without knowing.  It's a great neighborhood, but a bit pretentious as you might imagine. I remember watching someone get out of the back of a limo...to go into Starbucks.  :lol

I could write an extra chapter for a future second edition of my book about this route in NYC so it can be visited next autumn when MK plays in NYC. Obviously for this tour I will release a free PDF with it so it can be enjoyed ASAP!

The thing is that I would need pictures of the area to be used in the chapter, if any of you live in the area and can help, please send me a private message.

Also... any of what used to be Power Station Studios, nowadays Avatar Studios?
