OK, maybe 'often' is not the best word here. I have no idea how often they jammed with a support act. At least, on these pictures it was Barooga Bandit:http://www.motorcityrock.com/bands/barooga_bandit/barooga_bandit.htmlI know that they also did a jam with Ian Gomm on the September '79 US tour.Maybe they did not do a jam when they recorded the show for the radio like March 31, 1979, but the pics here are from the next day April 1 (according to Corbis), but you are right, I don't know of a bootleg on which we hear them doing this.
Strangeeeeeeeee, mysterious stuff there! Have to say the pictures are heavily overpriced... I've vinyl bootleg from one of the shows of that tour (Philadelphia), for the DS fanclub of Hamburg.

And is David sharing a mic with John?

I joined just to make a comment about a picture from the 1979 Dire straits concert, someone asked who the second drummer is- it's a guy named Franz DeRaad, he played with Barooga/Barooga Bandit, is from my home town and that pic showed up on my Facebook homepage,
