Just curious after listened to the bbc 5 live interview. Anybody knows where I can have a listen to it ?
-
It is the one that's on the SOS single, right?
This one I think:

-
Yes, and I think it is not a different mix as the BBC man said but a totally other recording. Germany
-
To my known there are at least 3 SOS studio versions:
- the demo recording from the pathway studio aired by Charlie Gillett and issued on the Honky Tonk Demo LP and latter reissued on CD.
- the one recorded for the album
- the one re-recorded for the 7" single - to date I assume that this version has never been officialy re-released elsewhere. Even the 12" version issued in the 80's seems to use the album version instead. The original 7" does indicate "alternate version to the album".
- possibly a fourth version is featured on the early demo silver boot using some rehearshal recording for the debut album
-
As far as I know, you are right, there are three versions:
- The one recorded in Pathway Studios, that it

other studio version (could be this the single version?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmx-pPz5_gs&feature=related

yeah I guess that second one was the interviewer talking about.I could swear I heard it before and in great quality but maybe that's just me lol.

I Had just listened to the single version again, and this alternate version on Youtube is the single version.
Only the quality on youtube is terrible. I will try to upload tomorrow.
And I think this must be the version the interviewer was talking about because in this version Mark sings: Goodnight... thank you... now it is time to go home.

There used to be a British TV comedy show called Harry Enfield and Chums. It had a character called Tim Nice But Dim and in one sketch he was playing a tennis racquet in his bedroom along to SOS. It was some different version. This must have been 10 years ago, it was discussed on the T-Road list at the time.
Also, does anyone want to know the details of how Eastbound Train ended up as the B-side? Well, I'll tell you. :)
It was recorded for this album, Live at The Hope and Anchor:
http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/various_artists_f2/hope_and_anchor_front_row_festival/
This album was recorded live at The Hope and Anchor in London between November and December 1977. Not sure when it was actually released, but I would say there is a good chance that this is the first time DS ever appeared on record.
My guess is that when they came to release Sultans as a single instead of using one of the other tracks from the album, they just used this live track that had already been recorded.
This album seems to be very, very rare, hardly any mention of it around the web.
But I bought a copy at a record fair in 1993. :)

Ah, yes, sorry missed that, but worth foing into a bit more details anyway, after all, we're talking about the very first appearance of DS on record!
-
I still would love to hear the really first version of SOS as it was originally written on National. Probably completely different tune.
-
I remember when I first heard this version, I knew the album one well but I never bought any singles as I had the album and when I heard this I was on the motorway and nearly wet myself. I thought it was the early demo and heard Danny Baker play it again and again I was on the motorway - yes you guessed - it's not fair! I discovered it again on a complation album finally and got the single and eastbound train b side.
-
Interesting also that Mr. Mayo has no access to this record. I mean the BBC must have an immense archive, mustn
-
I guess he wants it on CD.
-
I think that the first single is the only one from DS to have not seen the light on any cd and surpsingly one of the last MK solo one either : BLT live ???
-
There are many bands that used to release singles with songs that were not released later on LP, so in this case is just an alternative version that is not on cd, because b-sides (as BLT-Live) doesn
-
I just remembered that years ago I bought a double CD compilation. It was some anniversary of BBC Radio 1 and I only bought it because Sultans was on it and I'm almost positive it was the single version so it has seen the light of day on CD although not an "official" release.
I've had a quick look and can't find it but I'm sure I wouldn't throw it out so it must be somewhere. I remember it had a white cover with red and black writing.

Amazing! I spent ages looking around the web for this CD the other day after reading this thread. I remember picking up this CD in the Elgin branch of Woolies in about 92 or 93, so it must be the 25th anniversary of Radio 1, but as a schoolkid I didn't have the cash for it. :(
I didn't mention it because it was so long ago I honestly can't remember which version is on it, only that it was a "different" version. Could be the demo. But amazing that you have it!
-
Actually, I think I have a cd-single with True love will never fade / Boom like that-live, just search ebay ;D
Are you sure it's not the vinyl single? The B side BLT live is nice btw. ;)

I must confess I am a bit confused now about the different verisons. Can somedody around here please confirm which version it is that is on the
CD that you find with that link:
http://markknopflermusic.blogspot.com/2009/05/dire-straits-demos-77-80.html
I always thought this was the single "alternate" version? I know it says its from "Honky Tonk Demo CD". So which version was on that CD? Not really that same demo that Charlie Gillett played? Anybody used this link and downloaded it or has the CD otherwise so that he can listen to the version of Sultans on it?
LE ::)

That's the demo version. We're, as far as I'm aware, looking for the single version released on vinyl that had Eastbound Train on the b-side. They are both different versions and both different from that released on the album.
-
Just found my double CD! It's called "1 and Only" and is to celebrate 25 years of BBC Radio 1, released in 1992. Sultans is the first track on it so it's all downhill from there! Here's the part you want to know: it IS the single version that's on it.
-
Interesting!
Now we can let Simon Mayo know that this version was actually released on CD ;) Probably very hard to get nowadays. I guess something for rarities hunters on Ebay.
-
Great stuff. We really should make Simon Mayo aware of this, maybe generate a bit of publicity for the forum?
Also, can I have a copy? :) (yes, I know it's official, but MK has made it clear he has no interest in making it available for me to buy.
-
Here's the album by the way:
http://www.amazon.com/One-Only-25-Years-Radio/dp/B000003HGL
-
I followed the link to amazon, would have bought it at once because I have never heard the single version on CD (have it on vinyl of course). There is a preview button for each song, and the Sultans version it plays is NOT the single but the "Live at the BBC" version.

I was just about to say. Very sorry folks. I made a huge mistake. :-[ I looked at my copy of Live at the BBC and the track length was 6:38 for Sultans and the version on One and Only is only 6:13, therefore I made the assumption that they were not the same. However I have just listened to it and of course they are. What is cut is the applause so it sounds like a studio recording.
-
Oops. Ah well, the search goes on.
-
Ingo, nice to see you are here on this topic, too. I hope you can make some comments about your research through the years.
-
As way of a small apology I have uploaded the single version (from my vinyl copy) for anyone who hasn't heard it.

And I meanwhile wrote an article about the demo and single versions in my Mark Knopfler guitar blog, triggered by this thread here:
http://www.mk-guitar.com/blog/2009/11/18/sultans-of-swing-the-alternate-single-version-and-the-demo-version_sound_and_gear/
-
Thanks, Ingo, great work. Interesting. I think it sounds astonishingly similar in the first part, but the ending on the demo is not so worked out and rougher
than on the later single version. Of course the guitar sound is different, but the rhythm section is very similar. Cool.
I never knew that this single version has been recorded a f t e r the album recording. I always thought the "polished" version was the newer one.
So I have learned something new about MK today, thank you, good night... now it

Thanks so much, Ingo. I always rely on you about the early DS issues.

Thank you folks. Interesting discussion. Ingo. That was awesome. Is it possible to hear the whole song? especailly the part Thank you ....good night now it's time to go home. But for me it will be time to go to bed.......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've just listened to the SOS demo version on Ingos site.
I've got the demos myself on one of my bootleg cd's, but WOW, the sound quality on mine is far worse.
Where did you get the great cleaned up sounding version?
I always did like the demos 77 bootleg. This was one of the 1st bootlegs i ever got.
Btw. I always did prefer the single version of SOS to the album version. Always had a grittier sound, and i love picks drumming more on the single. It always seemed alot more upfront in the mix.
Also, i don't know about anyone else, but i'd love the band next year to play the longer version of Sultans again, with the piano break in the middle. I always loved that. Although i don't really care what version they play, as long as they play it. ;D ;D ;D
Cheers BBB
-
BBB, After not having heard the long version of SOS for such a long time, I am also ready to hear it again and I think Matt would do a great piano break. I still love the four piece though! ;)
-
Me too!!
I think it all began with "What It Is": Because since the 2001 tour it had a similiar slow "break" in the middle with a building up strat sound solo, Mark obviously thought that he couldn

BBB, I totally agree with you on the piano part of SOS. It's the best of the best and the best in the world. I love that part so much that I've attempted to play it on the piano myself. It must be incredible to hear it perform live !!!!! Yes, I love the demo, single, album, live or even some good covers of SOS. It was the first song I heard that made me fall head over heels in love with Mark's music. The rest is history.

This limit is reached.
To download this file, the uploader either needs to transfer this file into his/her Collector's Account, or upload the file again. The file can later be moved to a Collector's Account. The uploader just needs to click the delete link of the file to get further information."
Can I have a working link ?
I have the 7" ;D but my turntable is not setup anymore .

But to my known both are 1 track "promo only" CDs. I assumed up to now that BLT live in Denver was only available in mp3 and 7" vinyl
So if you have a cd-single with True love will never fade / Boom like that-live on it can you check and give info about it?
I would be interested.

It sounds almost the same as the BLT 7"vinyl with Who's your baby now on it instead of Summer In Love like the label tells us.

Accurate volume amplification of 4.6 db was also applied - no bit were harmed or hurt during the process.

I know this is an old thread but since 2009, this clip has appeared on YouTube and what made me wonder was the fact that this version is called "long version" and is 6.00 min. long? Whatever, maybe it is from interest for anybody, the sound quality is rather good!

I usually try to avoid songs like SOS just to not wear them out, but when I do I always come to the conclusion that it's the coolest song ever written.
It's a great version, maybe even better than the album version. Gotta love the percussion thingy during the outro.

Absolutely. Much better than the album version which is too laid back and smooth for me. Mark is really on it here and playing great, rough licks and the percussion thing you mention too - faaaantastic!

like the licks before 2harry doesn't mind" and also afterwards... :-)
oh and the chorus with the band joining in, nice...
like Dave by the way. like the chorus every time...nice...
did i mention "nice"?
solo 1: awesome...
solo 2 (THE solo):dude, the drumming....sweet...solo, well yeah, it is THE solo, what can he do wrong with it?

For me, this will always be the best song ever, & I have always loved this rougher edged version.
I just love Picks high hat drumming throughout.

I didn't put it onto my HD at the time I put Sultans on. Should have, shouldn't I? Now I have a different computer with no interface for outputs so I'm not sure if I can do it any more. I'll see if I transferred it to a CD and get back to you.
I've got Badges, Posters, etc if you want on my HD?

I checked my shelves and found the CD "Rare Sessions III" where track 1 is Eastbound Train, but obviously a live version from "Chorus TV" 1978...
The single b-side was another, cooler version that I used to have on tape somewhere... It is that special version that I am up to...

Hi all, this is my first post, I actually emailed radio 2 about the different versions and got this response;
Many thanks for your email; Radio 2 has a couple of versions that of the track that it plays.
There is a the version of Sultans Of Swing where Mark Knopfler says “Good night, thank you” near the end, this version was never commercially released, there is also a version without “Good night, thank you” near the end.
Radio 2 actively plays both versions.
Great site!

There is in fact a difference concerning the line "Good night, thank you, now it is time to go home":
"Good night" is on all three sultans studio versions (album / single / demo), but the "thank you" is only on the single and demo versions, the album version just is "Good night, now it's time..."
