Although expected for some time, this was deeply saddening.   I watched Paul Newman in films from the time I was a little girl.   He was one of the longest lasting and greatest actors in Hollywood.  Not only was his talent great, but his humanity was also.  A quiet private man, he made superior and unforgettable films again and again.   He donated over $250 million to charity, through his food companies alone.   He was kind and generous with his time and money to many less fortunate.  He loved racing because it was clean and decisive.
It sounds almost as if I'm talking about MK here, doesn't it.    And there is that MK connection, as Rudiger noted in the first post of this thread.

Yeah it is sad that again somebody we "know" for such a long time is gone!  :'(

I loved to watch his movies when he was young and ......uuhhhh loved those beautiful blue eyes! :P

Marie it was in our news that the money he earned with his food shops, was used for little children with cancer! He was a great personality and will be missed by many people!

As has already been said, not just a great actor but clearly a great man as well.

It's always sad when anyone dies but I think in this case it's clear that Paul Newman had a long, happy and fulfilling life and we can celebrate his career and life rather than mourning too much.  :)

So strange...I had just finished watching....for about the 50th time..."The Sting" the night before, and signed into my computer yesterday morning for the purpose of writing a review for Amazon about it. The news headline smacked me right between the eyes when my home page came up. Paul Newman was one of two actors who could make my mother drop whatever she was doing to come in and watch him if she heard his voice on the TV. I grew up thinking of him as a great actor and was always taken by his personability in interviews. I knew he was sick but had no idea he was so ill. He was great right up to the end, and always credited the actors with whom he worked. As Marie said, he was a major force in the philanthropic world, donating millions of dollars. I feel as though I've lost one more part of my life. I hope he's enjoying himself somewhere now, smiling that sardonic little smile.

Missing him, it's time to celebrate some of his greater roles now.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid made him known to a whole new generation!
The Verdict--little known and under appreciated.  The Oscar that year should have been his.

I didn't know there was music of Mark in the movie "The Color Of Money."

It will be on our TV this evening and I will try to record it and listen if I recognize the music of Mark!  ;D

I will miss Paul Newman, though he's not been seen much lately. He was such a great presence on screen, could play so many parts convincingly, and he was so generous.

His partnerships with Robert Redford were such great fun. Redford lives here in Utah and is one of my favorites, and they were long-time friends.
