Title: Prince's Trust gig
Post by: FenderBender on May 26, 2009, 03:06:47 PM
Sorry if I've missed a thread and this has already been discussed, but anybody going (or can afford to go) to this?

"How to book
Tickets are limited and early booking is highly recommended
Call the Events Ticket Hotline on 020 7543 1389. Alternatively complete our booking form"

I think it's possible...

But... On top of the message:

"This one-off concert, before an invited audience only, will be at The Hurlingham Club on Wednesday 9th September 2009."

So I don't know...

Perhaps you receive an invite and then you pay in order to support the charity? It isn't clear at all is it? I'd happily pay but I don't think I could afford to take the wife too!

"Tickets are limited and early booking is highly recommended"

So, if it's only for invited guests, you don't have to book early (and why limited?)
And the site says you have to book early!

My english sucks, but i hope you understand my point...

Seems to me if you give them lots of cash (for a good cause) they invite you. :)

Nice to see MK doing some more charity work again. I guess this will be part of a series of little promo gigs once again.

I have looked at booking form. This appears open to anyone with the cash. Will be a great venue, smallish crowd and bound to be some new stuff played.

I am a bit mystified how this has come to light.  ???   I looked at Guy's Forum, but apart from a vague question about the Hurlingham show, no more info about the Prince's Trust.

Thanks, everyone for the info!  I would just love to go, but it is a bit too pricey and we would have to stay two nights in London and travel down from Yorkshire.   Anyway..... ::)

Thanks, Dusty. Will google later, too busy today. I tried to call them, only an answering maschine was on. But yes, it is close to us, we live at the moment in SW11, but move to NW3 soon.
I'll go if I can get a ticket.

It would cost lots of money...( plane accommodation gig food... pfff)
Any idea if it's a normal concert or just a little? How long would it be?
Maybe it's better if i save money to travel more in 2010... but i miss MK's lives =)

who is going?

As the booking page on the Prince's Trust site doesn't mention other acts, I'm presuming the main event is a full MK concert and the exclusive first part will be a meet 'n' greet for those with very deep pockets.

I guess it depends what you class as a "full" MK concert. The promo band will probably have a set of around 45-60 mins prepared for their promo gigs if the last album is anything to go by, so I would guess that's what will be played at this gig. I seriously doubt it will be the full 2hr set from the "proper" tour.

I tried to call them yesterday when I was on the road, but there was only the answering maschine. Then I sent the booking form to them before I went to the EC show at about 7pm BST and now I got the answer via email that all VIP tix are SOLD. They offer me the 200 GBP and 100 GBP tickets which are still available, but when I spend this amount of money, then I also want the 'private' concert before the official show and one of the best seats.
Anyway, I'm on the waiting list...

Anyone lucky?

Best,
Martina

I have mixed feelings about the pricing, etc of this gig.  On the one hand I would dearly love to be there for the exclusive part, but on the other hand I find it quite elitist, especially as we are led to believe that MK is a socialist and therefore, in favour of equality.  He has rather disappointed me in this and I would have thought it better to have a level playing-field of tickets for everyone on a first come first served basis at a price somewhere around

I would love to go too but share some of the same reservations as previously mentioned. To justify it i would have to leave the other half at home (cost-wise that is) and it really wouldn't be that exciting or relaxing traveling and attending the gig with no one around that I know.

Anyone thinking of going from the North East (of England)?

I am guessing MK has nothing to do with the pricing structure of the tickets and I am sure he thinks the venue is a good idea being located in his 'home' town.

However it's a shame he couldn't have staged the gig in one of Britain's 'quainter' locations. We have some beautiful cities with beautiful venues. They don't cost a fortune for taxis and accommodation is very reasonable. And they are easily accessible. London is not. Unless you live there right in the centre of town.

I would have paid twice the asking price if he had played in some obscure location (a la Boothbay for example) but the expedition/pilgrimage itself would be an ordeal that I think would take the shine off the whole event. And to travel all that way for 60minutes is also a lot to ask.

Next time maybe?

I was unable to get to my computer when the tix became available, so Pottel was kind enough to order one with his credit card for me. I was just reading the regulations for picking the tix up................

Hi. I'm just in the process of finding a CHEAP hotel right near the venue.
I just thought i'd see if anyone who's going has had any luck finding anything close.
I'll give it another week looking, but i'm just going to have to bite the bullet if not, and pay whatever.
Wonder if the Hurlingham Club would let me pitch a tent in their gardens.? ;)

We need to find a pub close to the gig to meet up in beforehand don't we? Anyone any ideas? Don't know the area personally but will put out some feelers. Better to meet in a nice local pub than some crap pub in the centre of town I think.

I know that we havent got notification of the time of the gig etc but I would imagine that its going to be 8pm ish.

I should be in London fairly early that day so if some people want to meet up for food, chat & a few beers earlier................ well, I'm available :P.

Apart from BBB,Arthur,Pottel,Martina & me,who else is going form AMIT??

Does anyone know the time of the charity gig? To me this will be an ordinary working day in London.
Close to Putney Bridge Tube station is a pub called 'Eight Bells' http://wcities.com/en/record/23,103574/1/record.html. Otherwise there is nothing really around, it's not a public event area.

my son and his girlfriend know the area v well - she lives in Putney and he seems to spend most of his time there(!) - and I'm waiting on some feedback from them. Let's keep the Eight Bells in mind if they don't come up with anything better. Will let you know asap, but likely to be two weeks or so as off on holiday in a few days.

Which airport are you flying into??Im flying into Stanstead at 10am so by the time I sort out the hotel etc & get into central London its probably going to be 1ish????I still havent sorted the hotel but the most logical thing to do is to book somewhere near the airport & get back out there after the gig - dont fancy trying to get back out there from London for 6am :o

Somebody had to do it guys.

Just back from a  beer tasting tour of the pubs around Putney Bridge.

My vote is the Duke's Head and Mrs draad and I will be there from 5pm on the night, probably earlier.

On the river. Little outside area where they BBQ, and pretty good pub type food. Nothing special, but believe me, there is nothing special in the area. After 6 pints they didn't get much better!

To find it, cross Putney Bridge to the riverside on the opposite bank from the Hurlingham Club and turn immediately right. Walk for two mins and you are there. A big cream coloured building.

I am the guy who looks like he owns the place.

Be there or be square. ;D

Hello all!

Thanks for your mail Marky ;-)
Indeed, David Perbal and I have bought 2 tickets for Mark's gig at the Prince Trust. These are reserved seats (not vip seats), 200 sterling pounds each.

Unfortunatly, it's become impossible for us to arrange the baby sitting of our 2 daughters (family not available), so we have to sell our tickets. If someone is interested in them, we can arrange a meeting before the gig when the tickets can be handled and the payment can be made.

If someone is interested, you contact me privatly so I can give you all the information.

Yolande.

PS: like I love so much "Baloney Again" and like my big friend Elian/Poupystar has worked hard and long on the DVD, here is a "souvenir" from 2002 with very nice solos :

PS2: but for me the best live version is just with Guy, from France (of course!) at Canal+ / Nulle Part Ailleurs during the STP promo tour. I have put my original audio recording on my website : http://www.local-hero.org/php/main.php (http://www.local-hero.org/php/main.php)
The sound in the TV venue was incredible, loud and perfectly clean, surrounding you. It remains a very special moment for me.

Have been trying to figure out what songs from Get Lucky we might hear on Wednesday. Bearing in mind the band make up that night, I'm going for

Get Lucky
The Car was the One
Cleaning my Gun
Remembrance Day (with or without a few kids)

Would love the whole utterly fantastic and breathtaking album but the other songs perhaps need Matt, Richard, Glenn, strings etc to sound album good.

We'll soon find out :D.

Home now so can use the laptop.

It was great to go to a MK gig for the first time since 2001 and not know the setlist.  I was in the cheap standing area with my pregnant wife.  Somehow I managed to stand by the stage all night.  On my right were the guitar techs on my left was seated Pete Townsend with an incredible young exotic looking lady :-X
The whole show was predictable compered and Mark was prompted along his set by him.  However MFN and Sultans sounded fresh again.  Loud and almost aggressive.  Why worry was fantastic and the highlight for my wife.  We were also told at the start that it was being filmed for TV.  Interesting.

despite the absolute amateuristic organisation, he performances themselves were top notch.
if this is goodbye for example sounded the best i have EVER heard it., so did going home, brothers and even the short sultans...
even the dreaded sonny liston sounded good. too much talking in between though...

God it's late!

The Hurlingham Club is 40 odd acres of exclusivity in west London. To get to the hall you walk through gardens, cross lakes, pass fountains etc etc.

At the show there was a compere type fella called Robert Lindsay whose job was to ask Mark questions, obviously prearranged. Mark would provide an answer, in a v relaxed and often humerous way,  and provide a song or part of a song as an example that would answer the Q.

At the start of the posh bit he was on stage on his own with an acoustic guitar. He was asked how he went about writing songs and he talked about how a little tune would play around in his head and how it would gradually build itself up to something more substantial. Behind with the Rent was the example he used. Next up was Secondary waltz after a direct question about the song. The other guys were on stage here and they provided some humerous backing vocals at times and got a few laughs from the audience - "a fat girl got left on the side" etc. Next up Marbletown. Brilliant it was but can't remember the question that led up to it.

Main show next. MK was 15 feet in front of me! Again questions and answers. "Mark - why do you have so many guitars?" "That looks like a famous one Mark "(the National). Stuff like that.

From the new album we only heard two songs, Get Lucky and Monteleone,  but they were brilliant.

STP came up - Mark singing for Mason and Dixon. Great Sultans, a bit of MFN, Local Hero too. If this is Goodbye - no Emmy but tops nonetheless.

Backstage afterwards, which was v fortunate. Spoke to Guy, Danny and William Topley. Pete Townshend was there. Once again missed out on talking to Mark. Could have but wasn't brave enough to introduce myself! Gotta get over that if there's a next time.

Was it worth all that money - oh yes. This was MK like you don't see on tour.

hope someone  ::) takes a recording set to that gig in a few weeks.
did i mention pete T. was really enjoying the show?
did anyone mention we got to see a knopfler son at a knopfler show? not sure which one of the two it was, he was sitting in the same row or one row behind mr. draad, wonder whether he noticed that (mr. Draad, not Mr. Knopfler Junior)
so the guys filming said it was going to be on a dvd, supposedly. there was two camera's, one on each side of the stage, then there was one in the back and one or two remote controlled ones at the backside of the stage. the interesting part will be to see how they will cut it.

Ben has long dark hair and an eyebrow piercing, Joe has shorter hair and wears glasses.
Ben posted some stuff at facebook last night so I suppose it was Joe, unless Ben had a laptop with him  ;D

On my right were the guitar techs on my left was seated Pete Townsend with an incredible young exotic looking lady :-X

Given Pete's problems a few years ago I hope she wasn't TOO young.  :o ;)

Thanks for the updates Banjo. When's your wife due? My wife used to trail along to gigs with me until she gave birth, now she has a good excuse to stay at home. ;)
I had my tongue firmly in my cheek, glad someone picked up on the young bit.  Not that I'm saying anything against old Pete.  He's a legend.

My Wife's due to explode in Feb.  There goes my chauffeur round the pubs.  Trouble is I've booked us tickets for RAH in June.  Gonna have to call in some favours I think.

I think it's fair to exercise some caution here. They might be deciding whether or not to release the official recording right now. They might be saying "Yes, but RLRR sold poorly, should we bother releasing this?". Then they find out that thousands of people already have a recording, they might decide not to bother.

I'd love to hear it too, but I'd rather have the pre-shot DVD. :)

Perhaps you could contact PCM Martina to try to find out what plans they have for the recording.

All that said, if teh VIP show wasn't filmed, I think you could release that. ;)

They will not mind if thousands of people (hundreds actually) already have an "audience" recording, much poor than the official one. And people that are die hard fans that will buy "everything" they release.

I think for almost every tour, charity event or promo season since 2002, Allen has been my own personal source of "The first link" to the first public release of that audio, video source.  ;) We have some great new people on here now also and so here is the place for early bird information even before other sites see it. Regular people doesn't know nothing about bootlegs or where to find them, and they never mind on poor quality recordings. Do you really think that the MK&Emmy DVD had low sales because there was an audience bootleg out there???  ??? ???

Sorry if this has already been mentioned (I've not read all the earlier posts), but in my experience there is usually an announcement made when a show is to be recorded for TV or official release. Did the guys who were there hear anything to that effect?

I've read somewhere that the gig was shown on TV screens at the Hurlingham. Perhaps the professional cameras were there just to broadcast the pictures for those screens?

I think there is no harm sharing the audience recording until there is an official anouncement of the release, if any...

As far as I know, the release or not has nothing to do with Mk or PCM, but with the Princes Trust. They ask MK for permission to tape the show for a dvd for the charity and he said yes, so I guess the princes trust are the one to contact.

And they

My guess is that it was probably the Prince's Trust itself that filmed the show rather than MK/PCm, and that they will most likely try to sell ito a TV station to make more money for the charity. Somebody should ask the Prince's Trust.

I think everyone, and I include MK/PCM in this, recognises that those who collect bootlegs are the real hardcore fans and they will also purchase all of the officially released stuff too.  Therefore, I personally don't foresee any problems at all with releasing a DVD or audio recording of the show.

I love "Why Worry" on this recording.  I like it much better sung just by Mark than with Emmylou.    :)

Yeah, I think Marks voice is a lot better than Emmylous!

Yeah, I never liked it on the AtRR tour.  In fact it's not one of my favourites anyway although this is one of the best versions.  I agree with Mark though:  "why bother!"

Hope they don't decide to play it on the next tour.

Well, there you go, it's one of my absolute favourites, but not with Emmylou!   I would love to have it on the next tour, especially if he performs it as well as at Hurlingham!   ;)

Hum I was on the opening nite in Brussels for the ATRR tour and for the encore I ended just in front of Mark.

The begining was very sweet and then Mark just play this chord on the acoustic with a great dynamic in the sound. Whaou it was very short but so I-N-T-E-N-S-E....

Apart that the NHB from 98/99 was one of my fave with the 91 version that closed the show

I always enjoyed the NHB versions and just like you, ds1984, I stood right in front of MK in Manchester in 2006.  It was very special!   :)

Says it's only on for 1 hour though. :(  Wonder which parts they'll leave out.  Bet you they'll manage to leave in all the talking!

On Behind with the rent in the pre-show, has Mark played it with a capo on his guitar?
If yes on which fret?

I'd say on 5th. That's how I play studio version and it sounds right. The intro/chorus part is a brilliant piece of melody. One of Mark's best recent tracks IMO.

I'm not good at writing chords, I do it all by ear but here you go ;) Should be close. The secret is in right hand picking of course as this song has a great groove.

Capo on 5th fret and then:
Intro:
Em, D, C
G, D/F#, C
C, D/F#, G, C
Am, Em, C, D/F#
        Em

Hi can anyone say what the excerpts of the songs were all about? Did he intentionally play shorter versions or did the recorder only catch 'excerpts' of the songs? Many thanks

he just played bits and bobs to answer to the questions.

Simon, He did the same sort of thing at Hay-on-Wye in 2007 and it didn't seem odd at all, because it is all part of the interview and in context.   :)
