What has been the best double album ever?
The Wall? Electric Ladyland? Exile On Main St? The White Album?

are you sure dmg ? after all we discussed about Marks' music now, I wouldn't rate Privateering as "the best double album in rock history".... ??? ::)

I go for Electric Ladyland. or first rays of the rising sun, if we can count this one.

I love the white album, but as many rock critics pointed out, it lacks an "album" mood, and it's surely the les "beatles" album.
It's more a comp of great songs by each member. few ones are played by the 4 together BTW.

Exile on main st. as less "catch" songs, but as a more unit sound , so it can be heard more as an album as the beatles one IMHO

Layla for me

Layla for me

yes I hesitated between Jimi and Eric/Duane, but Jimi has won in my head   :P
Layla comes very near though  :)

as for alchemy, I think it's m'y fav double album , ever....but I'm not sure it can count as the "BEST" album, ever....

if we can count live albums, I will add : ABB at filmore east, who live at leeds, Lou reed's R'NR animal (well, most for wagner and hunter), grateful dead live/dead, and of course Stones get yer....one of the best !

I can't believe the non DS/MK replies here;  can you ever imagine the outcry if they decided to announce another artist on ER forum as best album?  Oh dear! :o

Well if I'm being objective, since I haven't listened to every double album ever released maybe I shouldn't have voted.  I doubt anyone has. :)

good point  :)

anyway I guess you know what I meant, I don't want to repeat again and again what we discussed some weeks ago with vgonis.
it's just that I make the difference between what I "like", and what I "think" (by listening to others musics, but also by reading books, articles about music, watching documentaries, discussing with people who listen to others musics, etc...) what is "best" , "more important", more "influent", more "legend"   ;)

sorry if my words aren't accurate, but my english is very poor.... :-[

I hope you get the whole idae though  :)

Not at all.  I know exactly what you mean.  This is why these polls are always meaningless anyway (unless Alchemy wins ;)).

Useless polls! Where is Frank Zappa? He must be the only artist with so many double albums, (and the first in the history of rock, he was delayed due to the band's name which was simply " the mothers" and the company didn't like it ), and yet not even one is listed. And how about Captain Beefheart and his Trout mask Replica? Not that I would vote for it, but still... I wouldn't count Alchemy as an album in the sense they started the poll. They obviously mean a studio album, otherwise we would have "live and dangerous" and many other gems. I voted for Blonde because it is the best 1 1/2 album ever made. White album and Wall follows closely. And the rest are great...

I though that they have changed this chart counting in the UK during the 70ies, due to the cheap top of the pops collections of reditions that were actually the best sellers and were taking many chart slots. Interesting!

You may be correct.  I got this information from Wikipedia who may have not updated their pages accordingly.

Incidentally, they did update their information very quickly last night when it was announced that the Reading football  manager had lost his job (it's always in the last place you look ;)).  Only a couple of minutes after the story had broke on Sky Sports News, they had the word "vacant" in place for the Reading managers job!

Quotes mean nothing unless they are in context.  :)

I probably meant among fans or live performances of DS.  Can't honestly remember.

BiA and STP are not double LPs, despite the fact that recent re-issues appeared making BiA and OES double vinyls.  ;)

Here's a list:
http://digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_albums-double.html

I'd probably pick Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds. The vinyl version is an double album. Does that count? First runner up "Alchemy" and second runner up "The Wall"

It was realeased by vertigo label 6359 109, double vinyl. It's really good. I picked it up from a market in Chelmsford in 1988.

I suppose that you are talking about that one :

Released under different labels.

The first copy I found back then was with blank label on the record.
But this is a genuine bootleg, nothing to do with official Vertigo despite it is greatly imitated on the cover.

BTW, vertigo label 6359 109 is cat. number for an obscure album released a few years before by an almost unknown band. I just found the cover, here it is :
