Title: Privateering Tour about to begin - Rehearsals starting in London
Post by: Love Expresso on April 07, 2013, 08:50:51 PM
As Guy will probably bring up a new diary entry and as it is only 2 1/2 weeks until Tour start, I thought I open this thread to fuel the anticipation.

John McCusker has twittered this nice line this morning...

I'm listening to Mark Knopfler & Dire Straits on my way to London! Hope all good with you. Best. John

So what was he listening to? The first album, to learn "Lions" - well, that's my guess...

 ;D

And more importantly (seemingly increasingly) configured the route to the pub. ::)

Fiddles are the most important instruments of the tour. We need them on Border Reiver, YTC and Marbletown.
I saw two fiddles on the picture, it made my day and I bought two tickets today.  ;D

Talking about fiddles - John McCusker is already driving home from rehearsals. Quite short. Or do you think he will return on Monday?  :hmm

Didn't see his trusty cittern.  I think that's actually attached to him and that's why.  I'll lay odds he sleeps with that old thing! ::)

Some lines from RB's newsletter from 11-Apr:

I suppose this is sort of a middle ground up-date, definitely not a Note From Nashville but not really on tour yet either. The first week of rehearsals are going great.  Many of the tunes we've not played since 2010, some we recorded on the Privateering album but not played since then and others have not been played before by Ian Thomas our drummer or Jim Cox our keyboard player.  I'll not give anything away here, but we've been working our way through a lot of tunes and I think there will be some surprises for everyone.

Ian played R&J and Sultans at the Range Rover launch event I think. :think

But I like this news, especially the fact they are playing different songs from Privateering;  I always thought they chose poor ones to perform.  Bring on Bluebird, Submariner etc. and drop IUTC, HA etc.

Surprises are good too - not a word normally associated with our Mark!

STATEMENT FROM PCM RE CAP RIOG GIG:

"There have been misleading reports in the media, stating that Mark Knopfler will be performing a special set featuring at least eight Dire Straits singles. This is not correct.

All ticket purchasers must clearly understand that the list of songs that Mark Knopfler will perform at Cap Roig will be drawn from the sets of the 70 other shows of his European tour and whilst this may include a small number of well-known Dire Straits songs, (as has been the pattern in all of Mark

According to John McCusker's twitter, they finished their first week of rehearsals, and he says that on monday they start production rehearsals.

Normally they do production rehearsals when they have the set rehearsed, so it looks like it only took one week to rehearse their set  :o

Or maybe we will have a bigger production, stage wise (like the big screen 2008 or something, or another "gimmick") and the production rehearsal has to be an integral part of the rehearsal in general.

A very vague entry by Guy in his site...

I understand that they rehearsed the same thing that they used to play between this 2010, 2011 and 2012 tours, with some new (or rescued) additions, and they just rehearsed one week.

I am afraid that this style of touring will be slow ending for MK in some places - if the shows are too much the same... If he wants to play in all those huge arenas, he should really consider attractiveness of his repertoire. For example, attendance in Prague concerts: 2005 - 8,500 people, 2008 - 8,000, 2010 - 6,500 people max. Wonder about the future...
Title: Re: Privateering Tour about to begin - Rehearsals starting in London

I hate to say it - but i agree with Danny....there has been too little set list progression and development in recent years with the last three or so tours being largly identical.  People unfortunately dont want to see the same MK show each time - we know we are going to get R & J, Sultans, BIA etc - but the rest are lacking surprise - SFSL, Marbletown, DWB, TR, SAN etc. :smack

Goodness knows (well actually MK knows) why this set list gets wheeled out tour after tour - but it cant be doing anything for the semi hard core fans, who KNOW they are going to get the same tunes they heard last tour - these people will not attend multiple shows like the majority of us - but only a one or two, and if they know they are going to hear the same tracks, then less so.

Im actually moving abroad to a territory that MK doesnt play regularly and hasnt played since 2005.  If a job comes up and i have to move earlier then i wouldnt be TOO gutted to miss MK becuase i just KNOW there wont be any huge surprises in the set this time around.  Tried and tested songs that the majority dont want to hear for the thousanth time rolled out time and again.  Its unlikely ill see MK again as he doesnt tour where im heading, again if MK has some surprises and gems each tour, i would be pretty miffed only able to listen to live MK on USB sticks.....but my genuine thoughts about maybe not seeing MK live again.....meh....do i care? ::)

Hmm...rhombus shaped lighting rig... :think

I agree with the above statements regarding updating the set.

I didn't realise his fan base was dwindling away like that dannyjun!  Here in Scotland the last few tours now he's been playing the SECC which is a bigger venue than the Edinburgh Playhouse, where he played in 2005/08.  I'll need to check to see if it's sold out on the night because it's the biggest indoor venue in Scotland, I think.

Although I agree about the setlists, his popularity in Norway actually seems to be quite good for this tour. This is the first time he will play three nights in a row here, and the total amount of tickets sold is about 20.000. This is a record for Mark's solo tours in Norway. The show in Stavanger was actually sold out in 22 minutes (5100 tickets), which is quite good when it comes to Mark's ticket sales, I think...

Although you can say that MK is quite busy over the last 5 or 10 years - an he really is, in terms of recording and touring - he also has a certain lack of power or better to say a certain comfort - why should he really recall and learn all that new stuff - he has two hours to fill with music. I am sure we will see Donegan's Gone again, A Night In Summer Long Ago, Done with Bonaparte and all that stuff. He is just in a "easy-playing-without-thinking-too-much" modus. He is able to deliever a very high standard in playing and singing (and remembering all the lyrics), and the price for that is less surprise. It is a pity. Marbletown was so great when it came up, a big surprise, together with Hill Farmer, but now they are pretty static parts of the set for eternity.

I would really love to know what Richard and Glen REALLY think about playing all this stuff over and over again...

but I also know that there IS a certain magic about this live music and after the first few notes I will probably be on cloud nine...

As long as Mark fill the room why would he bother to do it a different way?
He's just doing what he likes. It is really up to us to come or not...

But I just fear that the day I will be so fed up with his setlist and will decide not to buy tix this "bastard" will choose that tour to drop TR for TOL or something like that  :smack

Didn't Richard write that they rehearsed some songs from Privateering which they did not rehearse last time with Bob?  I remember them playing a lot of songs from the new album at the two secret promo gigs and at the first shows, Miss You Blues, Redbud Tree, I Used To Could, Yon Two Crows, Kingdom Of Gold, Haul Away, Privateering, Corned Beef City, any more?

I would love to hear Go, Love, Bluebird and as an opener Don't forget Your Hat (really!!)   Maybe I get lucky! Thogether with Before Gas & TV and Fare Thee Well Northumberland, you could play Walk Of Life and Rudiger from my point of view, I still would be happy with those...

Guy's updated:  http://www.guyfletcher.co.uk/index.php/2013mkeuro/Rehearsal

"As usual, prior to the first day of rehearsals, Mark had sent me his list of songs he fancied trying for this trip and this included lots of familiarities and a whole lot more. In fact the song list has grown as the days have gone by and we only just managed to get through everything by the end of the first week."

Indicating to me that they have more to do in rehearsals. :think

Together with Occupation Blues it really should have been on the album. Double Album could have survived 22 instead of 20 songs...

OMG...
Could we dream of the return of the infamous sax break in Sultans from the BIA and OES tours ?? and the sax in R&J ?? That would be awesome !
My worst fears (in decreasing order of concern):
- TR is not played, and is not replaced with TOL either; this would be very, very sad.
- SAN is not played. This would be the end of an era
- Yon Two Crows is not played in every show but just alternating with KOG. I would be pissed, as YTC is by far my favourite from Privateering, very addictive song, and the live version with the guitar solo is a killer - made me feel that DS was back !!
- Border and Piper from GL are gone... Border is such a great opener and Piper such a great closer that I want them badly !

Maybe whilst listening to the Madrid 2010 recoding of TR Mark realised it was time to drop the song because he couldn't do it justice any more.  Now with the sax he decided to replace it with the long version of Sultans...

Whatever the scenario, any return of a saxophone is extremely interesting and very welcome as far as I'm concerned.  It's always suited Mark's music in a live situation.  The Range Rover launch event was an indication after all.

the pic could be the 54 strat, which is also sunsburt finish, like the TOL schecter strat

as for the sax, could it be TR with sax, as on OES tour ?

I agree that pedal steel ruined the song in 91-92, but I loved the solo on sax, instead the guitar (well I love guitar solo on TR too)

TR with sax was a bit too much on the Kenny G side ;) OES versions were powerful but ruined by sax, pedal steel, rushed pace and lack of intro IMHO.
I think TR was best during the GH/STP/SL tours. Really nice, smooth and powerful.
Next would be the first 1981 versions - really refreshing, new...
Next the Alchemy version - a bit rough but powerful.
Next the 92 versions, and bottom - the 2008/2010 versions, still nice but lacked pace, power and had this "karaoke mode" which I really disliked...
Oh, please, could we get a 2013 version similar to 1996/2001/2005 ones ?? This would make my day...

Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but I think I "grow" with Telegraph Road. After 2005, I loved the Lyon version and thought that would be the best version ever. But before that, I thought Vaison 1996 has with no doubt the best TR, whereas I can't hear that one anymore these days.
Today, I only listen to TR from the last part of 2010, so Locarno for example would be my favourite. I would agree however that the 2008 version indeed was weak, but that they also improved that for the 2010 tour.

Listen to Locarno, the finale of that version is so great that you easily can forget about the new-style first half of the song...

I've just listened to Locarno 2010. It is decent of course, there can't be a bad version of this song, but I don't see it as better than Paris 2010 for which the solo was quite electrifying. And all in all, the pace is much slower than Lyon 2005... so I still prefer 2005 by far.

Guy kind of admitted the saxophone...

In two answers he said that the "core" of the band will be the same of 2012, and that its safe that will be new instruments as, for example, a saxophone  ;D

Check the forum.

-Hi Guy! I suppose exactly the same band members than the latest tour with Bob. Is it right?
-Yes, as the core

-Without spoiling too much, can we expect new instruments played by some of you, like happened in 2012 with Richard playing steel guitar, Mike playing drums or Ian playing the dashboard? Someone playing saxophone, for example?
-yes, I think it's safe to say that

Yeah, but he left us not very much smarter,  as usual, did he. When he talks about "core", that would imply (from my point of view) that there is, apart from this "core", room for guests or additinal musicians?
Whereas the second question implies that one of the usual members would play saxophone, for example? Who would it be?

I think it's impossible to tell Jarle from the picture since the quality is so poor, but it surely must be a sax player and not just a multi-instrumentalist doubling up.  It's too specialist an instrument I think. ???  If it is a sax play then it must surely be Nig, after all: "he's played before!"

Guy just confirmed the attendance of Nighel Hithcock during the UK shows!

Hi, there are some impressive pictures from John from the rehearsals. On two pictures you can see a sax player at the right side??? Can you confirm or have I to wait till Cologne to know?? Thanks and have fun on the road! LM

You will have to wait until the UK shows I'm afraid as Nigel Hitchcock will be joining us then.

Lucky me, as I will be there in Liverpool!

Bap and Rudy are joining as OPENING ACTS

Bap in two shows (Nimes and Geneve), you can read it in his facebook, and Rudy released the dates in his site.

I guess there is a chance that, at least Rudy, could join them on stage, but I guess that will be it.

Mark and Richard's guitar match, the sax could replace the harp.

As much as I would love it, I don't think so.
In the 2002 London charity gigs, Chris was there. He played sax on R&J, Going Home, Why Aye Man, and Your Latest Trick (of course) but not on Sultans.
In the 2012 London Range Rover gigs, Nigel was there. He played sax on R&J, Going Home, Walk of Live (can't imagine what it sounds like, even though I don't care that much) and STP (can't imagine how it sounds like and I DO care), but not on Sultans.

So it seems that even when a sax is present the long sax break in Sultans is not in Mark's mind.
Maybe they will play WAM in Europe more than WII and with sax again.

Anyway, funny that Guy said a few years back "Sax is gone, for the better" and that Sax is here again ! can't wait for the setlist and the arrangements. Please, set list posters, post w/Sax next to the title so that we know ! :)

It also means that the impact of sax will not be drastic, otherwise the whole show architecture would have to change, which is unlikely with MK.
I guess UK people will have the priviledge to hear again sax on R&J and Going Home... maybe a few others like STP and WAM... hope no WOL...

STP already ruined with flute since 2008. Can't be worse than that, so why not sax on it?

2005 remains definitive version to my ears with Guy keys on it - just perfect.
The only way to make it sound better could be a real pedal steel - and I am not certain of that as you can't exaggerate perfection.

Maybe the nice surprises are just the return of MFN...
As for sax, if it is only for the UK shows, it won't be drastic... no, I will not fligh to Glasgow just for that ! :)
Yeah, I also have nonetheless the feeling that this tour will be special... with a DVD/BD in the end, at last.... so my biggest fear is no TR... I would like so much an alternate TR on video... As much as I like Alchemy, this is the only one we've got officially !

Could the song we are talking about be I Used To Could? Mark on Strat and Richard on that acoustic - same as for the Dylan tour. Nigel replaces the harmonica from the album version with his sax...

Edit: I see now that this has been said several times during the last pages, but I think that's the answer.. Let's hope for On Every Street anyway :)

Just to remember, this was the set list from the Ranch Rover gig, where Nigel Hitchcock first appeared:

Walk Of Life, Sailing To Philadelphia, Romeo & Juliet, Sultans Of Swing, Money For Nothing, Brothers In Arms, Local Hero, So Far Away.

I have no idea on which songs the saxophone was used, but I am pretty sure they rehearsed the same song with Nigel as played then - and therefore my
guess would go for the Local Hero, So Far Away combo. Richard's acoustic seems to be the most interesting hint...

My guess is that Nigel will ad sax parts to songs that can be played with or without sax (what it is, why aye man, romeo and juliet, i use to could, so far away etc) and probably it would be a song or two that probably will be in the waiting until Nigel arrives to be played.

Yes, I think R&J is a banker.  Perhaps that is the song they are playing in the picture - we seem to have forgot, in midst of all the speculation, that Guy said they are running through an old tune (or words to that effect).  Remember if Nig is playing in R&J then Richard will not have his solo at the end as this will be taken by the sax, hence the different guitar... :think

even when R&J was played with sax, the 2nd guitarist always played electric guitar, mostly for chords in the chorus, and during the 2nd verse, and some lines at the end (not particulary Richard's licks)
but you are right, a song can always been rearranged, so it's just speculation
