I always bet that if you number the questions, he would number the answers, sometimes it works. This time it didn't. I don't know if he just ignored the first question or he didn't read it...
If it is about the Deptford days there are only 2 guitars he can use on this: the Hofner or the red Fender Strat. I think we can assume it won't be the former!Didn't he already have his National at this time ?

1979 rhymes better with "one song at a time" so I bet it is not a mistake. Close enough though. They would still be in Deptford in 1979, wouldn't they.
I think he mixes old days (when they executed prisoners for show at the Execution Dock in London) with new days and concerts.
1879 is not a misprint.

What do you think about the "fakers" line?

Definitely a swing at the shitty cover bands.
Also, note that he says three mutineers. If he's still comparing he might have left out DK. :)
"And I’ll be out of this place
And down the road wherever
There but for the grace, etcetera
I’ll see you later but it’s 1979
And I’m picking my way out of here
One song at a time"
Maybe 1979 refers to the first DS tour in the United States and album cover somewhere with the American prairies. I am thinking aloud
It is true. And this fact speaks to me more. But I do not know why I thought about the first DS tour in the US:)

The album is leaking one song at a time ;DHahahahaha :clap
Wow. All three songs from today are many dimensions above Bunk on the Dancefloor and Crap On You Son .. totally pure MK. Love it!
LE
Is the intro cut? The outro is for sure. Where does this come from? It seems 16 sec. missing..
I just love how he sings here and especially the Down The Road Wherever line ... so beautiful. Now it makes sense. So different to just read the lyrics and hear him sing them for the first time.

Radio broadcast, the end is indeed cut off a little.

Maybe a fine instrumental horn piece, worthy of Metroland. :D
I was not complaining. Only wonder about the cut as I don't know the source.

I have it recorded as well in mp3 and I slowly faded out the volume during the last 15 secs.. sounds better than to just cut it!

"At the end of the night when our ears are bleeding!" :lol
Yes, pure MK awesomeness! My reaction was quite emotional, must admit. I am one those big blokes who cry at MK concerts ;)
Somehow I can see this one as the last song before the encores with this endless instrumental outro...
I just Fuh ing love this song :lol
Thanks a million dmg for your help tonight. ;)
This track is my fave so far!!! The words, the melody and MK - wowsers!!!!!! Shall look forward to hearing this on tour!!

Nae bother big man! This is my favourite too. I just await a longer outro and live versions! :P
This is my favourite of those "leaked" today.
It's a song that makes me smile and sing along. The guitar tone makes goosebumps. Classic Knopfler, that says all.
Can't wait to (hopefully) hear it live!
yes I think you can make expectations for the rest of the album....believe me.....may I say it's a "killer" album ? ::) :) ;D (don't call me Guy please..)
What a wonderful song! You would expect to have heard this type of song from Mark before by means of structure and instrumentation but this sounds so fresh and a bit more energetic. Very very nice.
This should have been the single instead of GOYS.
It has all the emotional power of Piper and Submariner, plus the energy of Border.
The killer song !
Thinking about the lyrics a lot. It seems it is indeed about the cover-band thing .. while he was picking his way (out of poverty in Deptford days if you like), they don't care about his amount of work and just steal his production. The poor old fakers are asociated by him with mutineers who make the main part of a spectacle with their executions. A certain bitterness sure enough. I find it very remarkable that he mentions The Pig, which seems to be a Hotel in New Forest, where he indeed lives?I agree :thumbsup
Then, while they try to make a buck with selling 20.000 tickets online, he no longer cares and goes over and goes on, he is long out of their sight while they steal his old "gold", he has long developed to America with the transatlantic blues... and the folkies are featured in the music at that part. Love it.
London, Bristol and Liverpool were the main slaving ports. Slaves were transported from there into the Caribbean and the Americas. Of course we know that the Blues thing started here, music coming from Africa to the US... that what he referred to .. the story from the ways music takes, that famous where the Delta meets the Tyne quote. It seems he is using this to differenciate simple stealing of music from influencal ways music takes.. that's for me the best way to describe the jumps in time that are pretty new for him in these lyrics.
Very very personal. Great and approbiate for the title track. Plus that Down The Road Wherever sounds so inbelievably geat..

The thing of note here is that the last hanging that took place at execution Dock was on the 16th December 1830....
Still my fave out of the 7 so far...Mine too, must have listened to it about 50 times now!😀
yes, a pretty nice one, to me it sounds like a fusion between Border Reiver and Piper to the end
best one so far out of 8

Maybe the organ will sound lower in the mix in the better sound of the album on Friday? Perhaps it wouldn't be so noticeable if everyone wasn't talking about it all the time; I never noticed it the first listen! :)

Precisely that! I've been playing this tune on the MK Strat this morning and i couldnt believe how close the three tunes are!! Still an amazing track in my eyes!
Man, the bass on this song is wonderful, Glenn s playing is fabulous as usual

I was wondering if someone could upload those new songs to ytube, please? :think

Great song, killed by Ianto. He does the same drum dull fill all the time and the rhythm is constantly the same throughout the song. I really dream of Mark getting a better drummer.

Well at least somebody noticed that. I can be wrong but from the top of my head it's the worst drumming in Mark's song period.

Is there anything you like about the new album? I see negative comment after comment... :hmm
What happens to the drums in One Song In A Time? The only thing you can say about the drumparts there is that there are there. That's it. That could be bareable if the song lasted for 2-3 minutes. In the drumkit there's also a ride cymbal and I think Ianto forgot about it, as well as he forgot about all the toms and that he can use more than one single hit on the bass drum per a bar of a song.

To me, the drumming is reminiscent of the so-called "country train beat", which usually is a lot faster. Nevertheless, a "train beat" really drives the song forward, which I think suits the theme of this song very well.

Right, similar to that. Mark wouldn't go for that kind of drumming if he didn't feel it fit the context. He may be hitting 70, but he's not senile.

The problem here for me and quizzy is that the drums has nothing in itself that makes you're gonna remember the song better. The rhythm is ok, it's a typical upbeat groove, the problem is with the fills and licks which the song lacks. It has nothing to do, in my opinion, with what Mark wants. Great drummers, like Ianto knows how to "interrupt" the rhythm in an appropriate way in a way not to lose the vibe of the groove. That's it. I think when I get the CD on Friday, I'll do a small review of the drumparts of every song on an album :)

I absolutely love this song! One of his best in years. What I really like about this song is the driving rhythm, yes! I think the drums drive it beautifully from start to finish. Yes, it's different from what we are used to in MK songs but man, it grooves!
J.J. Cale used automatic drum machines all over his songs and it didn't prevent them to become classics. And this one is an instant classic regardless of drumming technique.
About the drums .. I wonder if they are so prominent in the mix because of compression on Radio broadcast. Plus you cannot divide the drums from the percussion, they are one and they really do it for me. Can't see why that should be a more stupid drumming than on let's say Heavy Fuel or Imelda or the likes...

Very lovely building. Good to put a picture to the name. :thumbsup
Love this song. Strong "feeling" that Mark has reached a crossroad in his professional life?
Agree that the song is a reference to leaving Deptford in the 1st verse and each song he writes takes him further and further away from those times, and down many roads wherever? Still can't put my finger on the meaning behind the reference back to 1879, but the 2nd last verse certainly gives me an impression that he may be feeling like walking away from the present like he did back in the Deptford days.
The mention that he has no wish to stay around "to watch any more poor old fakers trying to dance in his old shoes, as we also saw in TOTT, shows just how deeply his feeling are regarding this "tribute" band thing.
I hope I'm wrong, and I'm sure he'll never completely stop participating in his 3 passions (writing - recording and touring) which have immersed his professional life for the last 40-years. :'( The touring is the one that I feel is slipping away.....
This is the best song on the album for me and an MK classic. Up with his best.
In a song that talks about going out from Deptford and his years there, I don't get the part of execution dock, which is(was) very far from Deptford, the 1879 reference, I don't get what that has to do with the rest of lyrics and the Deptford and early DS days...
There was a famous hanging of three mutineers from the M.S. Bounty at Execution Block but that was in 1792.
LE

The were obviously more and many occasions to hang three mutineers at the same time.
I like your Interpretation but have a problem with you saying
The date 1879 is purely to give the listener the view he is thinking of the past and not a significant date with regards Execution dock. Hangings ceased at the dock in 1830....
as that is EXACTLY what MK would never do and what attracts him so much as a songwriter to me. Always accurate, detailed and assignable. I agree however that he chose a typical hanging scenery with the big immense crowd and so on, that it's exemplaric and that it is not important when that hanging was and who was hanged etc. It's about the spectacle, the crowd coming to see mutineers...
So MK being so accurate, the mentioning of that exact date 1879 must have another reason. Not that I insist on being right but my found from some days ago about the first recording done in that year still circulates in my mind ...
LE
Not convinced yet, I went on researching and found that 1879 was a very interesting year ...
William Denny and Brothers launch the world's first transatlantic steamer to be built of mild steel, the SS Buenos Ayrean, at Dumbarton for Liverpool owners. On 1 December she makes her maiden voyage out of Glasgow for South America.[/i]
So as a foundation and acceletator that new possible traffic connection had to do with the transatlantic blues?

It gets more crisp and trebly. The shaker gets more pronounced and then back further into the mix.
(or have I just listened to this too much? :))
"At the end of the night when our ears are bleeding!" :lol
My ears are bleeding when I hear this "modern" beat. Reminds me the song "Fuh You" by Paul McCartney (yes, he sings "I want to fuh you"). There's a difference between experimenting to get something new and just experimenting for the sake of it. Man how inappropriate this beat is...
As with the organ in Trapper Man, this literally kills the otherwise GREAT song for me. As if some "modern" track is playing in the background.
No, Mark, please leave experiments somewhere else, it's not for you.
This song caught my attention when I first heard it in December 2018, and I have spent the last several months searching the web for comments about it. I think one of the verses refers to the induction of Dire Straits into the Rock Hall of Fame in April, 2018. The induction ceremony was attended by Dire Straits members John Illsley, Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher. (Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler and Pick Withers did not attend). When I read the verse of “One Song at a Time” that talks about “three mutineers turned off at twelve o'clock” and “the shyster takes a ringside seatNot with guy and John being there
As they're bringing them from the jail and twenty thousand tickets Sold online on premium sale”....
it kinda looks like the lyrics could refer to the induction ceremony. I wonder if Mark Knopfler thought the induction was little more than opportunistic show promotion rather than real appreciation of the music of Dire Straits?
To be sure, I’m not 100% certain about my own interpretation either, but here are some supporting thoughts:
- I read about one article which said that “Trapper Man” was about the music industry. https://www.songfacts.com/facts/mark-knopfler/trapper-man. Clearly he doesn’t like being told what to do.
- Whoever was working with MK regarding arrangements for the Rock Hall ceremony apparently was trying to control every aspect of the trip, press coverage, etc. to the point that MK just decided he would not attend.
- The reference in “One Song at a Time” to online ticket sales for the execution - possible reference to the induction concert.
- The reference in “One Song at a Time” to the year 1979 in one verse and 1879 at the same point in the next verse. He could be saying that the Dire Straits days were a long time ago (39 years ago when he wrote OSAAT) and it may as well be 139 years ago. In other words, he’s moved on and doesn’t feel the need for too much hype around the induction.
I don’t think MK meant to belittle the honor of being in the Rock Hall of Fame. He has said that he considers it an honor, in fact. But he probably had issues with the people who put together the induction ceremony and how they handled it.
Still to me the back bone tune of the album....

Nothing has changed for three years. One of the most important.
