All info that's avaiable on MK.com is:
"As with past Mark Knopfler tours, the 2019 edition includes some very special offers for fans. North American ticket buyers will receive an offer for a copy of Mark’s new album with every ticket purchase. And all MarkKnopfler.com ticket presale customers will receive a complimentary live recording from the forthcoming tour. Expect more details on both these programs to be communicated over the coming weeks and months."
Anyone sure what this actually means? Will every concert be recorded and eventually release on USB sticks as the previous tours, or will they only record one specific concert and send out to the people who got tickets on pre-sale?
Anyone got any inside info? ;D
-
Guy said there will be recordings of each concert on sale, as usual.

Guy said there will be recordings of each concert on sale, as usual.
That's great news ;D ;D ;D Has he confirmed this through his website or just said it? :thumbsup
-
Soooooooooooooo, Fair Admission users aren't going to get it, right? Only presale users? Are they for real?
But honestly, I don't think it's a USB recording of your show, maybe it's a "the best of" kind of compilation?

Well Fair Admission is also in the pre-sale state. They cant deny us access to that recording. If so they can go to .... with all the other things that have upset fans in the last week...
I still want to know where or when Guy has confirmed USB sticks recording for the whole tour? ;D

He said yes so now you can sleep much better.

Question on Guy's forum sunday:
Hi. MK.com says a future live recording will be made on the tour? I was hoping every concert is recorded again and sold in USB sticks like Tracker tour… will this also happen? Cheers
Answer Guy: Yes
So a conformation that all the shows will be recorded and released

I hope it's very much not like the Tracker tour; I'm hoping for much improved sound quality!

So do I! Newcastle was terrible sound quality.

When the show in Amsterdam has passed you can buy a USB stich at MarkKnopfler.com.
That's the way it goes. I think the other shows will be the same.
-
It looks like both Bleecker Street (recording company in 2013/2015) and Simfy (in 2010) does not exist anymore. I really hope they solve this with another company and that the news are out soon.
Official update needed.. whatever Guy has said on his page.. maybe he thinks those companies are still active while he's busy trying the fancy shirts :clap
Very disappointing if nothing is recorded from soundboards...

Ulf, the guy who did the live mixing on all the recordings in the past, is now offering this service with his own company:

We should know soon. I asked Guy several weeks ago if any deal was made with any recording company since both Simfy and Bleecker are gone.
Just got for answer that they are PLANNING TO RECORD EVERY SHOW and that more info is out soon.
The days are ticking and the time is decreasing..if there is nothing all AMITers must get together and we set up a recording schedule 8)

Terry just answered me that question. Still confirming there will be SBD recordings and an announcement will be made soon.
Recordings will be available on USB. Announcement/details coming soon.

1 Day left now...
Will they announce the news during the tour?
Why not just do it before it starts? :disbelief
-
There will be recordings of all gigs in FLAC and MP3
-
Announced tomorrow at 20:59: PC manages a last ditch deal with some cheapjack supplier no doubt. ::)

Yes, but to download the flac files is $19.34 USD........which is reasonable.
The USB stick is more like a tour souvenir and not necessary to get the music. It's like buying a tour tee shirt, not necessary but some folks like to have the memory
-
Good to see it finally showed up. So empty stick but gives you the concert download as discount if ordering stick + concert. However the link to select show is not working though.
Damn I am excited for tonight ;D
-
Let´s hope that the sound quality for the recordings is much better than last time.
-
Okey so, €44.05 for the guitar USB. When you also add a concert, I did the Barcelona flac files, you get a discount or concert for free on it, just how you see it haha. Because it stays the same price. Then the concert is € 16.94 and the USB €27.11. But the shipping costs are €19.85. So one concert (Flac) with guitar USB is € 63.90 ::). So yeah, I bought it ofcourse, but it is a lot. And if you add a second USB with one concert the second USB cost the same, also € 27.11.
A well, on the other hand... I‘m crazy happy we can order and will have all the concerts recorded :clap So lets enjoy when it arrives ;D. Now I really cant wait! :)

Indeed! Like 2005 Shangri La :clap :clap :clap

And i thought they would take USB price-flac price and you'd only pay for the stick. But of course not :lol
So it's basically the same price for the stick and stick+concert then...
The news are not official yet right? Because you can't find it in MK.com without knowing the link. Also the link to where you can choose which concert to buy does not work :hmm

Yeah I think it is not official yet.. I can also not find it if I look through the MK.com store yet. But the ordering through these direct links work. Maybe I was a little bit too fast... but it worked :lol. Lets hope it will arrive haha.

Now the usb key link is not working... Who is fiddling with these links all the time? News are out but still not visible in store...

I was thinking the same, but now everything is online :thumbsup

Unfortunately the Albert Hall shows are currently the only ones unavailable for pre-order. I seem to recall there being a problem with downloads of RAH shows in the past due to licensing issues. Hopefully that will all be sorted out this time so that both shows can be made available.
-
So their website says discount when selecting both usb stick and concert, Jasper90 got it but I never got it and tried multiple times to re-add and then checkout, lousy... And support takes 2 years to answer most of the time.
Yesterday the news were up but nothing visible in store, then these news pages were deleted for a while and finally some working links appeared. Guess they forgot the discount thing here, very bad handling.... Anyway I ordered the stick only, at least that's secured. I'll get the concerts later.....
Edit: of course working now when I have ordered haha..
Since their sales are final guess there is nothing to do. Very bad though the discount did not work yesterday evening..
-
Please allow 3 weeks from date of show for the delivery of your digital file. :think :think :think
-
Can you also buy the USB stick at the merch stand at the venue ?
With the Get Lucky tour that was an option. I am asking this because i can’t buy it online without credit card and unfortunaly No Paypal option to buy it
-
Is it clear which company produces and mixed the recordings? I can't find it anywhere. Who knows the answer?
-
I have just per-ordered the barcelona Show. 3 weeks to deliver the file, hopefully the quality will be better than last time. :clap
-
The fact that it takes so long should be a good thing. They have time to make it sound right. I rather wait 3 weeks and have a great recording than a shit one directly after the gig.

Thats true!
-
Compared to some audience recordings, the first offical live recordings available right after the show were very, very nice imo. Never forget it’s a live recording and no British Grove studio work. The recording cannot do magic tricks on bad acoustics in the venue after all... :clap

True as well. The first ones were very nice but after that it went downhill. For instance: Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam is one of the best sounding halls anywhere, best acoustics etc etc. But the recording is really not good. I'm confident this time will be better! Maybe we can ask Guy if he is involved in mixing some of them?
-
I remember that there was something if like you've ordered "Down the road wherever" through Markknopfler.com you could choose a show to download for free? Does anyone still have the announcement mail for DTRW, I seem to have deleted mine :(

The Dublin (first) show from Tracker tour was poor quality, so poor in fact that they were forced to remix it along with the 2nd Manchester show. This is why they both sound so good.

how did you do that? i click on the download button and nothing happens.

So like I said the discount did not work for me yesterday evening, tried several times. Decided to order the stick anyway if it really is limited... Discount worked this morning :hmm :think
-
ok, got me a stick+flack barcelona recording.
-
3 weeks for delivery the files is a very long time..
Last times the files were ready after 1 or 2 days...
Do you have more info about this?

better production? i just hope they do not cut out songs. alchemy style....

>Each download includes the complete live recording of the show in Barcelona
As for the 3 weeks delivery that is the maximum time.
There will be a massive backlog if each show takes 3 weeks to mix etc.
I would imagine we will get the show at some point next week.

I remember that there was something if like you've ordered "Down the road wherever" through Markknopfler.com you could choose a show to download for free? Does anyone still have the announcement mail for DTRW, I seem to have deleted mine :(
Found it:
PLUS, all MarkKnopfler.com pre-order customers will receive a complimentary future live recording from the forthcoming tour. More information on that and how our customers can take advantage of this very special offer will be provided in the coming weeks.
So if you pre ordered the album through markknopfler.com you should get a free live recording. But how this should work I really don't know. Will contact markknopfler.com for more info

Think it was same in 2015.
I should get my stick in 2 days :thumbsup
I asked them how many copies there are of the Usb stick but they have not answered. Does anyone know?
-
Does anyone knows who mix the live recordings? I hope that John Altschiller the recording will mix. He also mixes live recordings from Bruce Springsteen. And during his last tour it also took 3 weeks to mix the concerts. I thought because its the same time Schedule maybe he also now mix the Knopfler shows
-
USB in 2019? Mark should hook up on nugs.net or other live concert streaming service.
-

The actual USB key is more of a nice souvenir/memory than just being able to listen to a concert live..
-
Folks, I need your suggestion. Of all the Spanish concerts + Lisbon, if I have to choose one for purchase, which one I should choose? Right now, I don't want to spend too much, rather buy only one. I will probably buy the one in RAH, and 1/2 in NA leg of the tour.
-
IMO Cordoba had the best performance and the most energy.
-
Looks like recording from the 2 RAH concerts is unlikely. This message now appears on the RAH links in the download concert list on MarkKnopfler.com.
"Due to venue restrictions we are unable to offer a live recording of this show at this time. Should these circumstances change and we are able to offer this live recording down the road we will make an announcement via the MarkKnopfler.com newsletter".
Seem to remember the same issue in 2015. Odd as many bands do record shows at the RAH for commercial release.
Best regards

My first RAH download was in 2010 and every year from then on.
I think that in 2010 tour it was available and next tours were not and were made available later when the tour was over. I recall that we had most of them in audience sound because there were not available at the time, but they were added some time after. Some of them years after as well.

I noticed that MK.com doesn't have an option of shipping to Russia... What they, russophobic or something?
So I need someone to help me with getting the USB stick for Lisbon show + shipping to dark and cold Russia.
-
Barcelona official download will start 16 may, Valencia 17 and so on.. :)
-
Doubt if any recording will be as good as from the Shangri-La tour 2010. The sound quality on many recordings of that tour are superb!

I don't think so.

Yes, :lol

I didn’t get the email with my digital download link until now.

I've ordered the Barcelona concert and I've received the link for the download. But the link doesn't work out. Returns: Download is not available any more.
As usual things doesn't work out the first time :disbelief

This could cause problems for those not aware about the Canadian distribution. It would've made sense to release the downloads before closing for the night yesterday to ensure downloads were available around the globe on time for everyone. Another balls up.
-
It's what happens when a British artist is represented by a Canadian company... different time.
I guess some Canadians didn't get much sleep during the European presales...
-
Legally and technically speaking, when you announce a date, the deadline is understood to be just before midnight. The time zone is the one related to the event, so Barcelona time. They still have more than 10 hours to comply...

It says "Please allow 3 weeks from date of show for the delivery of your digital file" - Barcelona was on Thursday April 25th, that's just my opinion, but if we take into account that this is the first concert and that the technical team reserves 1 or 2 days to "tame the beast" and mix everything, the count should start the week of April 29, so it would give an approximate delivery date of May 18 at most.
-
No, they clearly stated 16 may, that's today.
-
They're waiting for the download, the link will be there when they have it , I have good hopes for today

They would take coffee and their Canadian bacon toll first.

What is crap is that the button changed from "pre-order now" to "order" and yet the file is not available.
As far as the date is concerned, I agree with what was posted above, the "please allow 3 weeks" gives them some room to have May 16th as an indicative date, not as a firm comitment. Let's wait a bit, I'd rather have a good one in a few days than a bad one today...

It's a batch process, they have to mix all the shows, date after date, if there's a delay on the first one, the next ones are affected automatically. It involves overtime or extra staff, but this is not our problem, is it?

Well, they had plenty of time... People from simfy did terrific mixes in 2010 and when you left the concert you had a USB with half show very well mixed...
In 2013 the quality was less good and in 2015 terrible...
With so much time, it should sound even better than mixed at British Grove...

Have not thought about this in detail, but you probably know... so Bleecker Street did not make the work that good? :lol
-
Actually the time is not so big as it might seem, 3 weeks for all recordings, not working only on 1
-
But why change the button to “order now” if the file is not ready?
-
They would take coffee and their Canadian bacon toll first.
Q: "Have you got my roll, my roll, my Canadian bacon roll?"
A: "No! You can have it when you've finished that Barcelona concert download" ;D

This morning at 6 am I've sent a complaint when I couldn`t download the concert (in spite of having my link). And now I receive this email:
Thank you for reaching out, and apologies for the confusion!
Due to a technical error, the email for the Barcelona digital download was sent before the download link was prepared.
This is why you are seeing the error message when you attempt to download.
The Barcelona download link will be available soon once it is ready. The email that you received with the link will still work, and we will inform you when the download is ready!
Apologies again for this confusion, we hope you understand.

That Crockford Management is really very bad. :disbelief

Yeah.. Like I have said, when the USB stick was on sale their page said from the beginning that the discount was active (stick+concert).. did not work for me as I ordered the stick directly to secure my copy...
Also I saw links appear and disappear several times on MK.com....
The website guys are really good at it :lol :clap
-
Keep calm...
16th, 17th, 18th...patience.
-
I expect this mix and master to be perfect since they take their time :lol.
On the other hand, it is worth it the wait... if they really make now a perfect mix and master of every concert. :)

Me neither! But it can not take long now since the old link some people got works :think.
Lets hope we get today all the download link!

So, how does the show/mixing sound?
I've only listened to a few tracks, but, in my opinion, it is better than 2015 but not as good as 2010.

they didn't even divide the files proporly, songs start with the very last seconds of the previous...
-
Really hope they bring TR back as long as Mark is comfortable playing it. Sounds at least as good as previous tour on this recording! :thumbsup
-
as usual the Pensa on Telegraph sounds like a 100 euro guitar, incredible really, prefer 100 times the very good audience recording which is out
all the other MK's guitar sounds are much much better
mixing is good but not great, some instruments are way too low
drums/percussions quality of recording is really questionable
overall good but not great, as usual
-
At least some people have got their links!
Not got mine and won't order from mk.com again as they are incompetent.

At the beginning of every song there is a little 'cut', that's not done very well, but it don't bothers me.

Noticed that too.. at 0:11 on MFN for example, perhaps due to their bad song cut as stated earlier here..

Yeah those cuts into the songs should have been avoided. Overall sounds good but I don't know, is it a result of a fast-paced stressful work that ended up with this? Although it was already delayed, another day or two fixing this would not hurt.. let's see if it's the same on the next...
-
Still no link... waiting waiting... try to be patience... :-\ :lol
-
The overall mix between all songs is so varied. Some sound great where others sound pretty poor. Hopefully there is better to come. MFN is very poor IMO where WAM sounds great.
-
Are those little “cuts” a microsecond of silence, like a “skip” in the song?
If yes.....are these the mp3 files or Flac?
If mp3......that’s the normal gap you get between files
If it’s the Flac files.....then it sounds like somebody took the MP3 recordings and converted them to Flac instead of the other way around. If so......they are not lossless files and need to be redone

Yes, on the FLACS
That sounds suspicious that they took the original mix and made mp3 first then got lazy and converted them back to Flac.
There’s free software to test a file to see if it’s of lossless or lossy origin. Possibly somebody test a file?
Are these “gaps” at the point where one track/file ends and the next one starts?
-
There are the sound gaps but we also have songs that begin with the ending of the previous track. So you can hear the end of the previous track, a small dip in sound where there is nothing at all, then the beginning of the actual track you are on.

Wow......at best....that’s just terrible editing on their part. At worst.....they took the mp3’s, convert to Flac and passing them off as lossless for higher sale price.
Shame ☹️
I don’t have the show....if anyone wants to send it to me I could try to look at the tracking and redo them as well as check for “lossy” status

I think it's just a poor (or not very good) performance on MFN by MK... Not so good on the guitar during verses, and not singing all the lyrics. Solo's are good (not the start)

Does anyone know which company has produced these recordings?

Does anyone know which company has produced these recordings?
Guy has not provided any detailed info about this, if I remeber correctly.... and both Simfy Live and Bleecker Street are no longer active companies.. could it be "themselves" recording/mixing from the soundboard perhaps?

You want to blow up their headquarters ? :D
I'm in ! Putting the end of Speedway at the beginning of TR is too much for what I can take...

It is the final insult not to provide all customers with access to digital files at the same time-there is no excuse.
I'm glad I haven't purchased any other downloads.
Our man deserves so much better but I guess his manager decided to go the cheapest way possible to maximise profits.
No surprise as this guy thought Fair Admission meant charging customers more!
Sad that we get treated this way-Paul Crookford has much to answer for.

This just continues, lots of customers not yet received link.. how hard can it be to send a mass message at the same time with the link?
Maybe they thought about OSAAT but instead "One MAIL at a time"...
Crappy management about the concert downloads including delays... The confusion during Fair Admission process etc...
It's like I said before : Down The Confusing Whatever Road Wherever :)

I now got this reply:
My name is Greg and I work with Megan. As was mentioned to you previously the download link was delayed slightly as the download itself was still in the final stages of preparation. This happens sometimes with this category of product for the first show. That said, you can now download the file using the original link that was sent to you. We hope you enjoy.
This is AFTER they said they would send me a link shortly.
I'm glad I'm going out shortly or I might blow a fuse!
I hope everyone else has more luck.
I'll check back tomorrow for the latest exciting updates:)

1 day delay should mean Valencia is out tomorrow? Or is it one extra day of delay for each concert? Who knows :o

guys, check the code, the files released today are codified at 32khz instead of 44.1khz !
monkeys are working on this stuff !
-
There is also a click on every track where I suppose the tracks should have been cut. TR starts during the Speedway outro..
It shouldn't be that difficult..
Delayed because the file wasn't ready they said.. sure.. :thumbsdown

This is ridiculous.
When you supply FLAC files you don't care about the size, you are selling top quality, so it makes no sense not to use 44 or 48 khz ! Why 32 ??!!! Shannon tells us that you miss the frequencies above 16khz ! A real shame.
The irony is that the 320mb/s mp3 might sound better, as it does not necessarily eliminate these frequencies...
-
Hi All, I got a very serious listenning on the mix using MP3 files, I got the download link this afternoon.
Here is my review :
1. Global feeling is that the sound is very compact, making all instrument sometime difficult to hear or to clearly identify
2. I'm not really finding the live aspect of a concert, public is too low except between songs where it seems to be higher
3. Mark's guitar and voice are in my opinion too in front comparing to other instruments making sometime the feeling to be like in 'ear monitor' sound
4. The mix between instuments is very strange, changing from a song to another, and not reflecting the great mix we have in concert
5. Bass sound is really too loud, making sometime the sound really hard to appreciate
So definitively, I'm not very satisfied with the result. Could be quite good to listen on speaker but very hard with headphones.
-
His guitar sounds weird and his voice is too high. I prefer the audience recording from Barcelona.
-
All, keep in mind this is new and the system will get better in time. Everyone keeps complaining about this and that. Mark could pull the plug on it and say it's more hassle than it's worth.
-
I have not had my download link yet, so can't comment about the product, but by reading the comments here, maybe they should have just waited untill the tour is over to release the files, that way they can spend a long time on them, to reach a higher standard.
-
All, keep in mind this is new and the system will get better in time. Everyone keeps complaining about this and that. Mark could pull the plug on it and say it's more hassle than it's worth.
There is what is hard to do (getting a good mix) and what is so easy to do that it is very amateurish not to do it (cutting the songs properly, using 44.1khz and not 32khz).
-
I Don't understant why they so much difficulties.
In 2010, i remember an article by Simfy guys explaining how they were doing the mix and how the show was part available immediatly at the end of the show.
They explained that they spatialized the scene as if you were seating in first row in the middle, and measured distance from this seat to each instrument and position Right/left.
They entered these data in their sound software and get from MK sound engineer the mix they are using during the show between instruments. They integrate public sound from behind.
Once all this was done, at each concert, they were using this template (readjusting sometime) to create the audio of the show. They done that for the half show and then copy and duplicate that during second half on USB to be sold at the end of the show.
And for me 2010 is the best audio we have. So, why not reproducing the same process ?

Yes, that’s vintage! They must have been inspired by the Bristol ‘96 recording! ;D
-

Indeed. It is not a right to get this. I really see it as a privilege for loyal fans, I wonder if it will earn money. Probably will get better in the coming days, and above all it sounds pretty good. Better than tracker / priviteering tour, slightly less than 2010.
-
If you pay for it, they must deliver a better job than they did now. So its good to complain about it.
We are not talking about free stuff here.
-

It is a pitty they release the shows by nugs.net who also release shows from Metallica, Springsteen and pearl jam for example. They release the shows proper mixed and tagged. And you can also pay with Paypal for those who dont have a credit card.

Why Bother? Tour
I really love this tour, already seen two shows, two more shows to come for me. On scene, the mix between instruments, voices is really perfect, sound is really good.
I just feel that what I have with this first recording of 2019 is not reflecting the quality of the shows, and this tour deserve a better sound. That's my view.
I know the real pleasure I have to listen again to old shows I have been since 1992, just seating and listening to them.
Sound quality for these recordings is key to reexperiment the pleasure of been part of those shows and tours.
When we see the incredible quality of MK records, he's known for that, it's a pity to have such 'amateur' work for these live recordings.

Correct i forgot the word “don’t” in the first sentence.
And i have good experiences with nugs.net over the years so i was hoping Mark would join this company

I use Nugs for buying Warren Haynes, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Bob Weir, Dead & Company and Springsteen recordings. They are all super! Never been a problem. Working with Nugs is a good thing, at least for the fans..

Too complicated for the management, they like only amateur stuff
I think a single person with just a decent background can do much better and at least cut the songs properly and do 44.1Khz

I would love to do it.. ;D

Exactly my thoughts. Such amateurish behaviour...
Anyway there is hope that Valencia is better done, when is it out? With 1 day delay should be today, but yes feels this is horribly managed and more delays to come for all recordings... :thumbsdown

All sounds so disappointing. I had hoped they would be using the 3 week period between concert and release date to mix or at least edit the download well.
I'll probably still buy a few, but no where near as many as I have bought in past years.
-
Strange thing is, I bought the recording on the 15th, didn’t receive another email but my first email’s link is valid. ::)
-
32 kHz sampling...ouch! How did they manage to mess that up? That said, the overall instrument balance is OK to me.
-
32 kHz sampling...ouch! How did they manage to mess that up? That said, the overall instrument balance is OK to me.
In 2014 Springsteen started doing the live concert selling thing. I believe they started with Live Nation.
The thing was a mess......terrible mixing and errors in tracking the songs. People sent in feedback complaining about how bad the mixes were to the point they would redo the shows. They got better, but still not great. Finally Springsteen camp moved to Nugs.net and changed who did the mixing and things got much better.....but the 2014 shows were all done under the original group.
The point is.......at least with people sending in a lot of complaints about tracking AND how bad and amateurish the 1st show is as evidenced by doing it in 32 MHz.....hopefully they’ll redo the Barcelona show and going forward, do better with the rest.
They need to do the Flac files in 44.1
So every one who ordered Barcelona.....reach back out and complain about the 32 instead of 44.1 and the poor tracking of the songs.

Probably just as well as I don't want to feel even more ripped off listening to an "upscaled" mp3 flac.
There is nothing polite I can say about this so.......
-
Is the FLAC version significantly better quality than the mp3?
-
Looks like this mess on the first release have brought more delays, now 2 days delay on Valencia as I expected at least :lol
But, now it's all about quality and the basic obvious quality that they have failed with.. so better wait now and get proper quality then to stress and push out the rest in the same way...
Anyway it's not well managed

Still waiting for the Madrid download link :( I e-mailed them, but have had no reply yet.

Wow, this is indeed a big mess.... Hopefully things get sorted out soon and the concerts starts appearing.. Valencia still says PRE-ORDER for example...

Still waiting too...

complained ot Guy just now.
got no reply to my complaint mail to MK a few days (!) ago.

I don't have my Barcelona link yet, either.
I do agree with those here to the effect that in the end all that matters is great sound when promulgated eventually.
We want to be careful about complaining (especially to the likes of Guy) - last thing we want is for them to decide this is too complicated and stop doing it. Remember, we have NO SOUNDBOARDS out there from KTGC, which is a shame! So bless this whole program...

I’ve done plenty of complaining. Don’t promise something you can’t deliver and take customers money whilst leaving them in the dark. It’s an absolute shambles.
Starting to think I may never see anything for my money!

"Money for Nothing"?! :P Joking aside, I hope you get your download code soon.
My first show was Leeds - maybe they'll have got their act together by the time that one comes round... :think

Sound from Valencia is better than Barcelona. Listening to it now. I'll save my praise until I've heard everything..
-
I do not want the songs for free, but would be great to hear 20 seconds snippet to hear the quality.
-
Verdict: Valencia mix is way better, cuts are good. Sounds much less compressed and boomy than the Barcelona gig. I'm quite happy with it, listening now, very enjoyable

If you bought the 1st show with a credit card, call your credit card customer service to dispute the charge. Let them know they did not provide you what you ordered, they provided nothing and now don’t respond to your inquiries. The credit card company will refund your money and investigate
After that, you can go buy show #2
But, if you do buy show #2 and you get nothing again.....it might be hard to dispute that 2nd charge after you disputed the 1st charge and went back to buy more

So they finally sent a link and after downloading it is confirmed they are upsampled flac files(i.e. converted from mp3.)
This is fraud.
I have made them aware of this "error" so if they continue selling upsampled flac files they will have no defence.
This really is a complete Crock.

Thanks for this input, now I'll be ordering mp3's, no need for flac.

So if they upsampled the Barcelona show (why only upsample to 32 and not 44.1), that would explain those micro gaps in the Flac files for Barcelona, which I suspected. I edited all those gaps out and thought to myself they all looked like the classic gaps in time and appearance that I saw in bootlegs traded years ago that someone had taken mp3’s and changed to Flac.
It seems to border on fraud. You advertise one thing, charging a higher price for it as well, then they either don’t deliver it at all, or to those they do deliver too, it’s fake. Kinda like buying a fancy watch out on the street, you know it’s a knock off fake. Here, they’re passing off Flac as genuine when they’re really just glorified mp3’s

Perhaps and hopefully so.
There is software that can analyze files to see if they are from lossless origin or upsampled......so possibly test the Valencia files.
The company selling the shows though should be made to redo the show (At least Barcelona) properly and not be given a pass on what they sent out. It’s not like this concept of selling live shows from a tour is a new thing. It’s been around for at least 14-15 years now and companies like Nugs.net have it down on how to do it properly and others can follow their roadmap easily.
People shouldn’t feel worried about complaining that the company doing this is demonstrating incompetence and that MK will simply say we’ll stop doing it because it’s a hassle. I’m sure they want to know if the good, loyal fans are getting taken advantage of and they, MK team has the ability to tell the company, make it right or we’ll go to another vendor to do this job.

To verify the accuracy......put the Barcelona files in audio checker and see what it says.
Also......take an mp3 file just to confirm it calls out a file to be lossy that you already know is lossy.
Aside from that......happy that the initial check by audiochecker says that Valencia files are not lossy

I got a reply to say: "The Madrid download is not yet ready. Once it is ready and has been sent to us, we will send you an email with the download link"
Does that mean MarkKnopfler.com Store aren't the ones doing the files? they are only providing the link? Who is making the audio files?
-
Upsampled, huh. Wonder what their rationale is for doing this. Does it mean they record the shows in mp3 format?

The Madrid, Cordoba and Lisbon shows seem to be up now. Changed from "Pre order" to "Add to cart".

Oh dear, glad I only bought the MP3 files. Why pay more for waisting HDD space? :lol

I received download links yesterday. For Barcelona, the introduction of PC is complete. Drums/percussions are perfect, brasses are really in background. There is no gap between songs. Neutron (my music app) mentions : 16 bits, 48 kHz, 1,5 Mbps...but i have no idea if the source is mp3 or not.

Are you actually saying that (without communication) they re-issued the Barcelona file, at 48khz instead of 32, with no bugs in cuts and possibly a better mix ??!!
This is breaking news, this needs to be announced properly !
-
received mine yesterday evening 48khz
-
This is probably not illegal - though it is immoral. The FLAC standard does not include a particular resolution, but it's shameful to only offer 32kHz sampling (which limits upper frequency to 16kHz) when it would have been perfectly possible to offer 96kHz 24 bit, or at the very least 44.1kHz, 16 bit, which is CD standard.
-
I compared only Nobody does that ... barcelona sounds better to me of valencia
-
Listening to the Valencia recording now. I guess it's OK soundwise, but it is pretty lifeless as the vocals are completely dry (no reverb) and there is very little ambient sound. It works as a rough mix and as keepsake from the concert, but how nice it would be with a proper, official live recording. It's also a bit hard to listen to Mark's playing because you get it exactly as it is, warts and all. At the concert, things blend a lot, so the rough spots are not so noticeable. There are also tuning issues going on. Sometimes the flutes are not in tune, other times the guitars sound out of tune. Not a lot, but it is still bothering.

I totally agree with your first part. offering flac with 32khz, cutting the frequencies to 16khz as Shannon says, is utterly stupid. If you go for flac you don't care about space, otherwise you would go for mp3 !
So yes, it should be 44.1 or 48.
Where I disagree is 96khz - useless waste of space, but we have had this old debate before :)
-
Herlock, I agree there’s not much point reopening the debate (though I notice I’m not the only one occasionally nagging Guy for a hi res issue of DTRW). But where do you live? I’d love to play you different resolutions through my pretty high end system. I believe you will hear a difference! (I’m in Guildford, UK)

Listening to Telegraph now. Richard's solo at the intro is totally out of tune! This is outrageous for a production at this level.

I live in France :)
I am open to your test, provided we agree on the methodology. It is too easy to compare two recordings that do not come from the same master in the first place. Some recordings labelled "high-res" do indeed sound better than CD, but that because they come from a remastered recording, not because they are high-res ! The only valid test is to play a "high-res" recording, sometimes with no restriction, sometimes with a 44.1/16 limitation loop, and ask which one is which on a number of trial A/B/C double blind test). If the number of right guesses is 50%, that mean you are actually guessing, so no audible difference ,:)
If you can accomodate that, no problem. Otherwise no point :)
Cheers

I have one or two classical recordings, by specialist Norwegian label 2L, which give the same performance at different resolutions. I agree with you that comparisons are often invalidated by different mastering etc. But the only difference with these is bits and maximum frequency. But are you ever going to be in Surrey?

yes the instrument is not 100% perfectly tuned but not out of tune either, at 2:55 it is accentuated by a playing error

You shouldn't have to buy it again. They should refund your 2nd purchase. This was their error, so it should be able to be downloaded by anyone who made the original purchase before the fixed the original files.

Listening to Telegraph now. Richard's solo at the intro is totally out of tune! This is outrageous for a production at this level.
you mean at 2:55 ? it's just a playing error
I mean the whole time.
yes the instrument is not 100% perfectly tuned but not out of tune either, at 2:55 it is accentuated by a playing error
Listen around 2:45-2:48. That's bad.
I also noted on On Every Street that Mark's guitar is not well tuned too. I know he uses chorus, but that's not what I'm talking about. That this happens at a gig in a sweaty pub is perfectly normal and acceptable, but here, with each musician having their personal tech who maintains and tunes the instruments with top-quality tuners? I'm a little suprised, to say the least.

I guess your 2:45 is my 2:55 (different format ?, Richard is not playing at my 2:45-2:48), it's a playing error, still yes the instrument is not perfectly 100% tuned for the rest of the song
it's like MK's very first note on Corned Beef City, a very small error on a slide sounds really bad

I’m glad to see the FLAC files are now an (entirely respectable! OK, Herlock?) 48kHz. I see Guy said that’s what they should be on his forum today. Maybe this absurd problem has been sorted.

How can you be 100% sure it is the same master, if there are two different products ? The only way to be sure is to have one product only (the "high-res") and "downgrade" it on the fly to CD resolution. Without making it worse on purpose of course :)
No plans to come at the moment, but, you never know ! :) Cheers

48 is absolutely fine. The 48 number can be divided by a lot of numbers, which is good for mixing. 44.1 is enough but it is an absurd number that corresponds to nothing but old VHS video standard... But since this is redbook specs you must use it to produce CDs. No need to use it to produce FLAC files, though, so 48 is the right standard.

They re-issued the Barcelona FLAC file, now 48khz, very good sound. (I bought it again)
First version: 706,6 MB
Second Version: 930,9 MB
Does everyone get a new link with the right files? Has the mp3 also changed in size?
-
Regarding the Barcelona recording: No, I did not receive a new email or new link. My first email’s link still works but leads to a new zip file (MP3). The old one was 323 MB, the new one 325 MB. It’s a different mix and completely different cut. Overall: the cut is way better but the mix is really different. Horn section has been put a little more in the background. Jim’s piano is more present in OES, Guy’s keys less. Not necessarily better in terms of mix, but the overall sound is better. Their first attempt was an average quality audience recording... ;D

From above: First version: 706,6 MB; Second Version: 930,9 MB
I received my link quite late (2 days ago) - the downloaded, unzipped file is 887 MB. I guess I have the 48k one right?
By the way, what is the method to check the FLAC files to see what hz they are recorded at?

I use winamp and it automatically shows the khz while playing, you could try the same

I use VLC Media Player -> Codec-Information

Although the start was not great, we can now happily praise ourselves with very qualitative recordings! Madrid sounds great! Hope for a few more changes in the set for a nice list of numbers. :clap :clap
-
The line goes up, Madrid sounding better overall, better mixed, more effects on MK vocal. Edit: even better than Valencia, I like it

The revised Barcelona concert contains a mistake. Money For Nothing is missing Guy's vocals.

I think I like it better that way (obviously I only have yt vids to compare)! The intro feels more sublime without the MTVs.
Really enjoyed the mix of the Barca gig on my headphones and stereo.

Being at that concert and getting the "I want my MTV" was something! It was almost unbelievable to actually listening that again asking myself if I was not dreaming.
So erasing it from the official live recording is somewhat falsifying memory of it.
Later, in Bordeaux something wasn't set correctly for Guy and he did not sing that part and we missed it. So may sound like a detail in regard of the rest of the song but that line is part of its identity.
At the show the synth line is a clue, but when comes "I want my MTV" we get the evidence of what is coming next.

Honestly, if I were in the the manager's shoes, I would have announced the availability of the concerts for download once the tour over, it would give the time to do a good job and deliver a quality product, working in a hurry is never good.

Once the tour is over interest wanes and they would sell less.need to strike whilst iron is hot

Latest released show is still Cordoba? With that tempo they will release the last show in about a year.

Hi there, I just purchased the Cordoba show and I'm in shock with what they've done with Speedway in particular… sounds awful. Anybody else with the same impression? I'm listening to MFN right now, something's not right…

Why don't you explain what the issue is so we can listen for it? I've listened through this show several times and don't recall anything unusual about Speedway. In fact, I think this show sound particularly good compared to the other. Maybe not the best performance, but the mix is improved.
-
Glad to know there will be tapers recording the 2 Beacon Theatre shows. Both won´t be released as soundboard recording.

Judging from the answer and tone, seems like I bumped into somebody from the company in charge of the mixing.
If this is the case, please allow me to explain it to you: (if my assumption is not correct, I´ll just share my thoughts with the members of the forum)
Regarding some of the songs:
Done with Bonaparte: Did you land an ear on Glenn's bass? should have been kept a little at the back, that NOT where the song is.
Speedway: Shite. Crap. Bullshit. From start to finish. Can you hear the engine revving? I CAN'T. In fact, nobody can. If you don't know what I mean, you don't know the SONG. Where is Richard's guitar when he enter's like a thunderstorm at the end? Can't be heard. Guy's synth becomes the protagonist of the song. They did not get it. AGAIN. It's simple, but they keep ruining the song.
Telegraph Road: Please listen between 9:45 and 11.24 THE MOST DISASTROUS mix I've ever listenned to. Volume issues. Don't they pay attention to the SONG? How it is builds up? You know, the man doesn't change the setlist that often. In fact, it used to be present in every tour. 2013 and 2015 sound way better (and they're not spectacular mixes either)
Money for nothing: Watered down. No substance.
They're just focusing on Mark's voice and guitar. Sad.
Overall quality, really low. For the first time in my life, I feel like asking for a refund.Money back. I was there (been to 6 already) and it saddens me to hear what has been done with it.
I know plenty of audience recordings with much more feel in it that this particular mix.
-
Just for interest what are you listening through as I can hear quite clearly the 'engine revving' on the Cordoba recording and on the other 3 recordings too...
Yes agree Speedway is sub bar but its certainly not what you say it is with your unneccesary expletives and yes the majority on here know the song!!....
Cordoba is ridden with MK mistakes too...

Listning to Lisbon concert!

Some mumbling at Lisbon CBC instead of " I am only one step ahead of my room and board".. also last verse sings "got to keep it going, cuz there's nothing on his bank"..
-
Any thoughts/comments on the Lisbon recording?
-
I think it sounds great. Last show with TR? Remains to be seen. I don't care for Coruna. Playing and setlist aren't as good as other shows.

I guess Barcelona as the first of the tour is the ultimate recording and it's a job to single out a single recording as so far all 11 are all good in their own right to be honest....
I know Leeds was an amazing show as I was there and it will be good to hear the recording...

Ianto spoiling WAM?? The blooming brass section aren't exactly needed for this tune and IMHO spoil it.

Not really. Like for SAN, maybe we got this impression during the first shows because Mark was a bit Rusty, but now it is clearl, it is not brass instead of guitar, it is both guitar and brass !

Maybe this is not the right place to ask, but I didn't want to open a different title for this ridiculous curiosity. I've been thinking about it for 2-3 weeks. Mark repeats the short melody in the video below that starts at 5.50 and ends at 5.55 at almost every concert, and I remember it from somewhere. Maybe in another song ... Any comments?

The ever-shrinking setlist, and people's pretty positive remarks about 18 song Barcelona make me think that’s the one to get.

It should be something like an arabic/turkish dance tune called Hoochie Coochie Dance/Kradoutja/The Streets Of Cairo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cusBd4m9yuM

Oh, my God, that's a detention! Thank you very much, because in the comments below this strange video, I learned that the melody belongs to an Egyptian song. Called Streets of Cairo. The ear-free state should be:

Sorry to lower the intellectual level, but it always reminds me of "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus

Just listened to the Milan download (in mp3, for convenience) and must say it sounds pretty nice, mostly because of the wonderful arrangements and a good performance by Mark (his age taken into account) and the band. The mix seems decent and works, although it still could be a lot better. For me the focus on Mark’s vocals and guitar could be a bit less and the same goes for bass and synths. What bothers me a bit about this production is the level of compression, important dynamics seem to have gone lost, which is a pitty as the more powerful passages don’t come across a such. What are your opinions about mix and compression?
Another thing which is bugging me a bit (also in downloads of earlier tours) is the sound of the snare drum. To me it sounds too soft, more like a muddy tom than a snare, as a consequence it loses the necessary attack in its sound. Anyone else who notice this?
-
I finally bit the bullet and bought Barcelona (no, not the football club, that would be beyond my budget). Chosen because it’s highly thought of here, MK's voice is in good shape (as it wasn’t at RAH1) and it’s the longest set of the tour. Way too early to give my impressions, I’ve only listened to Once Upon, MFN (sadly lacking Guy's singing at the beginning) and what was labelled by those producing as 'Track 11' which is actually 'She's Gone/YLT'. Anyone buying this will have to relabel this track on their computer if they’re bothered about it. A fuller report should follow when I’ve had a proper listen to the whole thing.

Strasbourg, Cologne, Berlin, Hannover are available.
And good they are too!!!!!

Having listened properly now to Barcelona, I think it's a terrific opening concert, and the recording quality is a step up from previous tour issues. There really is plenty of presence, with MK's voice and guitar very up-front. The other musicians may be lower in the mix, but they are clearly audible. In many ways it's probably better than being there, as I doubt the sound mix was this effective in the arena. All of this (obviously, Herlock!) via the FLAC - strongly recommended.
One or two songs weren't as good as they were to become a concert or two later - I think particularly of the opening of MFN which became much better with more grandeur and Guy's voice; and as others have said Going Home is perhaps on the wrong guitar with a bit too much of the brassies. But on the other hand, HFoH is way better than what I heard at the RAH, and Bacon Roll, R&J and plenty more are really excellent here. Plus, of course, one of the very last opportunities (I'm sure) to hear Telegraph Road live, and that's pretty decent, if not the very best. This concert is well worth the money.
-
Funny to hear all that praise for Barcelona. I did not find the opening night being memorable from a performance point of view. There was obvious things to be fixed.
BTW, if I remember well Guy was actually singing on MNF intro but dropped on the recording

Yeah, Leeds was a very well played show but had a mistake on the R&J solo but Newcastle was spoiled for me by the sound from my poor seat. It'll be interesting to compare them both in the recordings and get a fair comparison.

like wise , remember extended Blaydon races for intro wam at Newcastle , but seat on side his hard to judge with sound sometimes, I know Ingrid and co loved Newcastle

To be honest the Strat sounds a bit 'flat' at first before the bum notes....

It's a pity the solo is so short this tour; I love that solo. :(

I don't like the sound of all guitars in this tour. When I left the Barcelona show, the first one, I remember telling to my friends that it was too noisy even for the Strat. I didn't know he was using a kemper at that moment, I was thinking that he was just playing too loud or too processed...

DTRW Guitar USB Key
Availability: Out of stock
Edit: back in stock again...
-
As Birmingham was the only concert I was able to attend I'd like to get that when it's up.
Not really very tech savvy and just wondered if anyone can tell me if you can save the flac version to a USB stick so I can play in my car or does it have to be the mp3 version?
Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction :thumbsup ;D
-
I have some shows in the FLAC version saved on a USB stick and can hear them easily in the car.
-
:clap
Thanks Markus. I'll go for the FLAC version then, although when I checked earlier Birmingham still hadn't been made available yet.
-
it depends whether the device you put the usb stick into can play flac.
-
Leeds and Newcastle now up!
Well worth the wait they are too!
Listening to Leeds FLAC now, it’s superb. Sound is brilliant, really clear and such depth. So much better than the dross they released last tour.
Great to hear the WAM intro again; they’ve basically copied the format used for Auf Wiedersehen Pet! Which is definitely the way to go! Lovely sounding version of Silvertown. Even Piper sounds good.
Looking forward to Manchester coming out now so I can add every street and brothers.
-
6 new shows released today from Dublin up to Alesund, not bad.. must be a new daily record for this tour :lol :clap
-
Does one of the new releases surpass the quality and performance of Leeds? If so, I’m tempted to buy yet one more....
-
No, the new ones have lots of bass. I still think the best recording quality and performance wise is Madrid or Barcelona. There is always something wrong. I'm not satisfied with it but who am I.......
-
Perhaps it has been discussed, but I can’t be bothered reading 20 pages. Am I missing something? During the Tracker-tour all the recordings came with a nice guitarshaped-usb, but this time it’s being sold seperately? Why?
-
I just downloaded a Dublin and performed my usual, particular quality check on the recording. I was particularly interested in this one, since I attended the gig, and I can honestly say it's one of the best shows I've ever been to, in terms of overall sound quality. You could distinguish each and every instrument on stage, at one point I was just in awe (Row 7, center stage, I think it was)
Regarding the mix: Good mix quality. 6.5/10. Doesn't do justice to what my hearing experienced (sonically speaking). Far form excellent (on purpose? Why would they deliver the best possible recording? aren't they experimenting with the mixes as well?)
But there is ONE particular thing that drives me mad (and is my particular crusade, apologies), and this is SPEEDWAY. Not the entire song, but the build up of the final burst, and more precisely, how the BRASS SECTION enters the song to tear it up into pieces. Awfully balanced, THAT'S NOT HOW IT IS HEARD LIVE. There is no such predominance of the brass section at that point. Not at all. Money for nothing used to suffer from the same flaw.
The thing is, I think they do it on purpose.
Just my thought.
(Concerning band performance, a very good one, except for Once Upon a Time in the West).
6 new shows released today from Dublin up to Alesund, not bad.. must be a new daily record for this tour :lol :clap

Yea... after listening to some of the latest soundboards from today, i feel the same a bit...
my audience recording in Stockholm has a very nice bass during STP intro and SAN... I expect it to be better than the SBD as well when it arrives.. but there are advantages with the SBD of course, Mark's voice more clear, maybe his guitar as well...
But yes, soundboard or audience, it's hard... audience recordings can make all of it sound very good, while soundboards if mixed badly, like you say, make one disappointed.
-
Wonder why the intro to MFN in Ålesund is fixed? MK did a mistanke during the first notes of the intro, but on the recording it sound as it should... 🤔
-
Does one of the new releases surpass the quality and performance of Leeds? If so, I’m tempted to buy yet one more....
I would be patient until the Amsterdam show.
From Guy's diary;
Luxuriating in our monitor mixes, tonight’s show was the best for me, and many of the band. The sonics of the hall do indeed play a big part in how things sound in our ‘ears’. Judging by early reports from the audience, the two go hand in hand.

Are the people who are supplying the downloads just doing it as a job? or do they care about the music? and in particular Mark's music? If they are just doing a job, I would argue that their quality control need looking at. They certainly have the time to get in correct, but if Mark is just one of many artists they are serving, maybe it doesn't help.

The absence of variations in the setlist should definitely be of help. Attending the gigs, also. I just don't want to think that, for example, the Milan concert was a free interpretation of somebody who was handed raw recordings or a pre-mix, or whatever, and has not been present in any gig. That would certainly explain it. ( Oh, Money for nothing: guitar, loud. Cowbell, hilarious, I like that. Oh, here they come, trumpets and saxophone, full volume) Just sickens me.

You have to ask yourself just how it was fixed. Did they just paste in the intro from another show? It's really false advertising; we aren't getting what we paid for. It's all part of the live experience, warts and all. Good job he isn't doing Sultans this tour! :o
-
they are probably not selling that many that they are going exert that much effort in them.

Agreed, those mistakes should have been left un-edited. As you said part of live experience and just confirmation the man is getting older...
Now we don't know if more shows might be edited too or not.. ??? :disbelief

They never edited Alchemy or OTN because Mark does not believe in it, but they do it to these shows. This is why we will never get a live DVD now.
-
Alchemy is edited, also OTN.
-
Alchemy is edited, also OTN.
Am I correct in saying Alchemy has SR ending taken from another night and OTN is made up from recordings from Nîmes and Rotterdam in May 1992 then? My point was that individual mistakes aren't patched up in the recordings.
-
The solid rock ending in alchemy was edited because of an individual mistake of Terry Williams.
There are a lot of more edits here and there, some not import but there are... I'm sure that also on the night has a lot but never care to listen to the audience recordings existing from the same dates the songs were taken because... Why I should? I don't mind at all.
-
Dear friends down the road, I appreciate your opinion:
I am thinking about getting the Dublin or Glasgow show recording because I think these particular ones seem to be interesting regarding the celtic flavour and maybe some plus of motivation (Guy’s bday, Mark’s early hometown...) and I’d like to collect at least a version of Piper from this tour... those who have listened to these concerts, which of the two would you choose please?
-
OTN is edited also and more than Alchemy !
For example, If you look carefully on Money For Nothing, you will see that on some part, Mark has a camera on his guitar and a wire going from top of guitar to his shoulder and rest not !

OTN is clearly edited. Really doesn't sound live at all.
Basel is a great REAL representation of that tour.
I remember very clearly going in to buy OTN on the day of release and being very disappointed.
Even aged 14 I could tell it was crap, as I already had the Ticket to Heaven bootleg.

The sound quality is very good. But probably too good; it was an extremely polished recording which took away some of the rawness of seeing the show in the flesh. Private Investigations sounds far too tame compared to true live (or even Basel/ Woburn), calling Elvis and money for nothing seem to have a completely different guitar sound altogether, but you and your friend ... wow, amazing!!

Don't know how much I would pay to get a new box with the missing OTN songs, probably any sum !

Disagree, to my ears it sounds compressed, mixed to an inch of its life and boring.
The exact opposite of Alchemy.
Very odd that they made such a big deal saying that Alchemy was actually live and then less than a decade later did the opposite.

I agree regarding the SQ. It's just not really an enjoyable listen.
The big deal about Alchemy being live led me to believe OTN was live too and I'm pretty sure Mark has said in interviews he's against editing.

I talked too soon… Terrible mix for Money for Nothing. Clean, but not well balanced. Voice and guitar over everything else, an exaggeration.

I missed most of STP at Manchester as security were trying to eject 3 very annoying and disruptive guys who spent most of the song trying to negotiate being allowed to stay (Richard watched on as the shenanigans continued!).
So, looking forward to this!!

I remember on my way out of the Arena saying to Val that West was a better version in Newcastle, even considering the poor sound from my crappy side seat! MFN and WAM were better too.
Listening to the whole show on the download I really realise how much my experience was spoiled by the sound and that I missed one of the better shows. It was probably the best show I attended yet I didn't realise it at the time.

So far, I have only downloaded the Leeds concert, but I intend to download Newcastle too when I have heard the Verona set list. I thought that Newcastle was the better concert of the two, but I enjoyed MFN from Leeds more than Newcastle at the time. However I'm really enjoying listening to Leeds and nothing, apart a very slight greenie on R&J, is amiss.
Edit: @dmg - I've decided to download Newcastle today following your good review!

When I attended both the Leeds and Newcastle concerts I enjoyed both immensely, but I thought the Newcastle one was slightly better. However, on listening to the Newcastle download today I now prefer the Leeds concert. Maybe Newcastle needs a few more listens! (edited after another listening)! :)
The sound on both is excellent - crystal clear in fact.
A few comparisons after listening to Newcastle:
WAM: Very nice - one greenie at 8.02
STP: I was just thinking how beautiful STP sounds when up popped an iffy note at 5.15
OUATITW: Excellent! :thumbsup - better than Leeds.
R&J: Good, but I like Leeds better
MBR: Very nice :thumbsup
MM: Excellent! :thumbsup
SAN: Leeds definitely better than Newcastle.
MFN: Leeds better than Newcastle.
All the rest - Both Leeds and Newcastle :thumbsup
I thought that on some songs from Newcastle, MKs voice sounded rather flat and tired and he was quite croaky at times, but, actually, he was a bit croaky in Leeds too!
I suppose I am just nitpicking really, because they were both great concerts, but it's the Leeds concert I will listen to mostly!
Leeds 9/10
Newcastle 7/10

yes leeds and Newcastle are close but at the moment for me
Manchester and rah 2 are my afvorites
Newcastle and leeds , with leeds edging it overall, (but preferred wye man and once apon a time , money for nothing from Newcastle)
then Birmingham and Barcelona on a par
and albert hall 1st night in last place ( even though really enjoyed all of them)

I agree about RAH2 being the most enjoyable gig I've attended, or heard a recording of. If only the RAH gigs were available to download (or have I missed the announcement?)

Quick question ... what players do people use for FLAC?
My Mac defaults to QuickTime which is fine except it plays files individually.
For uploading to an iPhone do I need to convert the files into say WAV first ... and if so can anyone recommend a good converter tool.
The FLAC filed sound so much better than the mp3 so I don’t want to lose that but do want to have the shows with me in the car and on my phone!
Thank yoooooouuuuu!

Cant go wrong with VLC. Available on all platforms and will play anything and any format you throw at it so no conversion needed unless you're worried about file size. Hope this helps.

Absolutely. I've been using VLC Player for years and it's great. Highly recommended.
-
VLC is the best
-
I use the classic Winamp :clap
Easy Interface and also a very nice reel analog tape skin that spins when playing songs 8)

yes for audio winamp is very simple, I use winamp, VLC is excellent for videos
-

They're both good, the only reason I would pick VLC over winamp is that it will literally play ANY format thrown at it. It's cross platform. It will even attempt with relative success to play damaged\corrupted files, and is also intelligent enough to recognise and play mislabeled files as well. Winamp is a great little player too, and for every day use would be fine, VLC will dig you out of some difficult holes though, if you know what I mean....
-
I also love Winamp for audio and vlc for videos.
Winamp is great as you can tag all the files and do playlists and see the total amount of minutes of it. Probably vlc does it too but Winamp does it so easy that I don't bother to check if vlc d does it as well.
-
For me , foobar 2000 and AIMP do the trick.

Vlc

VLC it is then, cheers guys!

It's a tough call. Speedway and MFN are probably the best from any show, but the rest of the songs are played exactly the same on every show since there aren't many guitar solos. WAM is just an okay version, although there's nothing wrong with it. Shame it doesn't have BIA. I'd probably choose another show personally for that reason if I was choosing only one.

I also have a thing for Bordeaux. Despite Mark not being so confident, I feel his playing and phrasing is very thoughtful in that early show. It also contains the first performance of BIA of the tour.

Right, I've just downloaded Antwerp as that's the only show I've seen. I think the mixing is pretty good, but very bass heavy. There's an unneccessary amount of bass in the recording making it hard to listen to on headphones. I've no idea why it's done like that? Apart from that the recording is crystal clear and by no means the mess I was expecting.

In fact the majority of the recordings are indeed very 'bassy' but like you say the recordings are generally crystal clear!

I'm so glad they left in Mark' chatter into the Amsterdam recording, gives it a nice touch.

The recording from Amsterdam sounds far better then how it was in the Ziggodome. The sound is really crystal clear. I am really happy with this recording.

It sounds better than the Antwerp recording but Danny is so loud. His shakers are the loudest in the mix, how is that even possible? Who mixes these recordings? The Kemper sounds shitty as well, doesn't work live, doesn't work on the recordings. I still think GL 2010 recordings are the best, closely followed by SL 2005 tour.
Milano 2005 and Amsterdam/Paris 2010 are my favorites. Overall the mix was crappy in 2013 as well but Malaga 2013 stands out, that one is great! I never listen to the 2015 recordings, can't understand how these got through the MK quality control.

Same with Stockholm. MFN at 3.30-3.40, Danny is too high in the mix making it sound weird...
Also wonder who is in charge of the mixing... Is it just a job getting done or a job getting done by someone who actually does the mixing carefully with a good sense of levels?

Does anyone know if there is a chance that the USB sticks will be in stock again?

It says you can register for newsletter to be notified when/if new ones come in.
Otherwise check Ebay regularly, there was one for sale about a week ago for £40 but ended unsold, maybe it will appear again.

Right, I've just downloaded Antwerp as that's the only show I've seen. I think the mixing is pretty good, but very bass heavy. There's an unneccessary amount of bass in the recording making it hard to listen to on headphones. I've no idea why it's done like that? Apart from that the recording is crystal clear and by no means the mess I was expecting.
antwerp was an amazingly loud show, and i seem to remember that the bass was pretty high in the mix. that may be a reason as well
-
Zurich was a very good show, you should definitely consider this concert as well. Great versions especially of Why aye Man, OATITW, Sailing, Brothers, Bacon Roll and also Speedway.
-

I have been following the site and the USB sticks are back in stock and on sale again.
If you order the USB stick and a recording, (together in the same order), you get the recording for free.

Guy confirmed he 'isn't overly impressed' with the mixes, says they are desk recordings. So it means they record straight from the desk which means if the bass goes heavy out front, it means we hear it on the recording too. So the quality of the recording must depend on the quality and the sound of the venue itself.

I don't think so, probable a dedicated desk but not a big mobile studio like one used by a record company.
-
It's never going to be live release album quality
I'm listening to the O2 recording now and it's up there with the best soundboard bootlegs we used to crave over. More than perfectly listenable and absolutely on tap

It's a shame Mark and Guy don't produce and mix the live shows themselves for a release like On The Night. At least the quality would be better, or just leave it to Guy if Mark doesn't have the time.

Finally! :D Half-way through and instruments sound absolutely brilliant! Great version of CBC. Vocals are most of the time ok (unfortunately not on WAM). But what on earth happend to James Taylor's part in STP??? Sounds like "Dosentelefon" at best. It's so bad that I think it would have been not the worst idea to just leave it out. D:

Yes, but I guess it’s just a random selection of 16 songs being played on regular basis. I don’t expect the best of the best versions of each song. There aren’t many freaks out there like us comparing ALL versions of a song, analyzing in detail and picking the best of the best. ;D

Yes, we had an email from MarkKnopfler.com:
all MarkKnopfler.com pre-order customers will receive a complimentary future live recording from the forthcoming tour. More information on that and how our customers can take advantage of this very special offer will be provided in the coming weeks.
I was wrong about it being a compilation - probably just a recording of what they consider to be the best concert.

I remember for sure that it was said somewhere that it would be a compilation of "the best of the tour", actually I recall there was a number of songs mentioned, can't recall if it was 15 or 16... but I recall very well that it was said both.

What’s been the average wait time for shows recently? Can’t wait to get my hands on the Verona show and have preordered but it’s been 3 weeks and they seem a bit behind with the shows that are available,
Always a hard wait!

Always a hard wait!
Seems to be around 5 weeks, rather than 3. Gdansk on 11 July is the earliest show currently waiting an upload. Hang in there buddy!
-
Yes, but shows are not made available for download in the order of tour dates. Nimes (15th of July) for example is already available for a couple of days. I ordered the Lucca show (13th), and it’s not available yet.
And to be honest: if I listen to other shows, I must say the Simfy live recordings which were 50% available right after the show, the remaining the day after were much, much better. :clap
-
Thanks guys! Absolutely loved the show so looking forward to hearing it!
Interesting they haven’t caught up a bit with releasing shows given the band has been off for a few weeks. The American shows will start soon again,
-
They are clearly behind again in the 3 weeks schedule as in the beginning of the tour...
Most June shows were released on time, are they on vacation too maybe?
-
The 2019 recordings sound ok to me but I agree that the 2010 sounded absolutely great. And the 2005 shows from Passalong sounded even better, even if they were highly mp3 compressed.
Too bad we have nothing from the 2008 tour but I'm happy that they provide quality recordings since 2010 though
Btw, could someone explain the difference between "desk recordings" (or something like that) and soundboard recording, as GF mentioned the other day on his forum. Just curious, thanks.
-
Just downloaded the Lucca flac recording. It’s “ok” but could have been better. The radio broadcasts of previous tours was way better, but hey: we got a recording! ;D

St Julien now available... :wave

Morning all,
If you had to choose just one of earlier shows that included silvertown blues to buy in stick or MP3 format which one would you go for? Obviously sound quality is paramount.
Thanks :wave

Just can't they are all good to be honest!! Oh ok, Barcelona is incredible and Leeds is awfully good as well....

The Leeds concert is excellent. Only negative it's the "Silvertown" version he played. It's the most boring I heard from the whole tour. It explains quite well why he stopped playing it, it sounds like he was already bored of the song, gave it a last chance but with very little faith... It was quite dissapointed as the concert itself is brilliant, but Silvertown is played with no soul.

Totally agree with you, jbaent, regarding Silvertown from Leeds. The version from Barcelona is really great in comparison. I, too, think he was bored with SB by then, but Leeds is an excellent show, apart from SB. :)

I had it in my car being playing in constant rotation for so long that the cd stopped working!!!!!!
I shold say the summer here is so hot that the cdr usually stop working if the are too much time in the car.

I listened to it last week and noticed this too although I must say I didn't notice anything at the show. Leeds I enjoyed immensely with a large AMIT contingent lording it around the city! ;D
-
This tour I've been in Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, RAH 2nd night, Antwerpen, Amsterdam and Verona, and from all the shows I attended, I would recommend:
- With Silvertown, Barcelona and Madrid. Barcelona for being fresh. Although there are mistakes here and there and sometimes you can feel it was their first show, it's fresh and nice. From that first batch of concerts, Madrid was the best ones as the band was more relaxed and secure about what they were playing.
- Without Silvertown, I recall Amsterdam being the best of all the seven concerts I attended.

I keep remembering being at Wetherspoons and the circle of AMIT fans getting bigger and bigger, until we spread further and further into the room! ;D I don't remember lording it around Leeds too much, except taking Ingrid to Whitelocks (oldest pub in Leeds) before the meeting! ;D

So far I listened to the soundboards of Bordeaux, Milan, Berlin, Leeds, Dublin, Bergen, Paris and Nimes. For Silvertown I would go for Berlin (although still this version isn’t really good - MK singing out of tune etc), still in general Berlin is a very good concert/recording, maybe my fave of these overall.
Otherwise I would recommend Bordeaux or Leeds, as others suggest Leeds maybe is the best for most of the songs, but Silvertown is sub par (perfomance and mix) and there’s that annoying greenie in R&J.
In general to me Mark (and band) sounded best when they were warmed up but not yet tired/unconcentrated or carelessly engaging in mediocre improvisation, so that would be the leg from Bordeaux up until Dublin.
As some of you will probably note I like a physical product, artwork and putting a disc in my player, so I must admit I’ve bought four of these concerts as wonderful cd releases by diamond records.
Of course I’m still looking out for the ultimate recording of this tour, both sound and perfomance wise. So please share your opinions, especially if you really listened to some of the soundboards I’ve mentioned and honestly think you’ve heard a better one... maybe Zurich, Amsterdam or...

Agree with everything there. Bordeaux was the first show that really sounded polished and the cobwebs were off. The UK leg was great and they were fully warmed up, however by the time they hit the continent again I think you are exactly right in your assessment.
-
Yet both Guy and Richard seem to say that every show was better than the one before. Of course they are being diplomatic, but it's a bit funny when it's all so obvious that it gets a bit stale after a while. So if everyone knows it, including Mark and the band, why don't they take measures to prevent it? If Mark is so intent on pleasing himself, is this really the most pleasing option to him? I find it weird, strange and inexplicable.

The annoying greenie in R&J from Leeds doesn't annoy me anymore - I'm so used to hearing it! ;D Silvertown Blues is another matter. There are no greenies that I can detect, but it's just plain boring! Barcelona Silvertown, though, is really great! :)
-
Bit harsh there Superval, I wouldn't say the Leeds version of SB was boring it perhaps isn't as eventful as the other few versions but none the less personally I enjoyed it.
-

Total novice question... what is a "greenie"? :D

I'm glad you like it Knopflerfan, but to me it is boring! Having said that, Leeds is one of the best concerts that I have heard on this tour, as well as Barcelona. Now I'm looking forward to the Verona recording and I hope it sounds as good as I thought it was on the night! :)

Barcelona is without doubt an amazing concert and one I frequently 're-visit' but yes I guess we will be biased in that Leeds was good too. Indeed I'm looking forward like I would expect you are to listen to the Verona recording.... :wave

Another thing learned! :D Thanks a lot!

Nobody talks about Cordoba. There will be a matrix recording (mix of sbd and aud recordings) that shows the real feeling of a great audience.

I believe 2nd September is a public holiday in Canada, so probably that may be why you've not had a response yet.
On the store it still states that the download "will be available as soon as possible". Maybe someone was a bit too quick sending out the email link.

Quality isn't close to the show I attended/bought in 2010 in milan, but so so happy to have a great record of an amazing night!

If they are gonna release a best off recording can only expect a standard setlist or will iT be a setlist with all the songs performed during this tour? If it’s a set with all performed songs it’s a great compilation
1. Nobody does that
2. Why aye man
3. Corned beef City
4. Sailing to Philadelphia
5. Romeo and juliet
6. Once upon a time in the west
7. My Bacon roll
8. Matchstick man
9. Done with Bonaparte

I don't think they'll release a "best off" recording; it won't be good for his reputation. MFN from Ålesund could be on there for a start! ;)
Seriously though, it'll be a difficult choice for most of them as there isn't a great deal of improvisation. There's a few we can comfortably choose already:
TR - Valencia
Piper - Valencia
BIA - Toronto
Silvertown - little to choose between most of them
NDT - Bordeaux
-
I don’t expect a best of. The only thing they will release though is a 16 song compilation.
-
Yes lots to choose from, hopefully all songs and not a 15-set will be made by them.
Some fans recently made a 21-song compilation from different European countries, like Spain, Portugal, Belgium.. great sounding!

I HIGHLY reccomend the Vienna, Wolf Trap, soundboard. Mark his voice is great, guitarplaying is great and the sound quality is fantastic. One of the best I've heard.
-
Has anyone listened to the download of the Chicago show and can he recommend it?

Ok ,what are the best recordings of the tour so far and which ones does anyone recommend

All of them so far!!!!!! :wave

According to Guy's comments, MSG is the one to get. All previous shows were the best ones for each new one, eventually they were all warm-ups for the tour's greatest show which was the MSG :lol
-
Hi, Barcelona is definitively one to fer !

Barcelona, madrid, Vienna wolf trap, Ljubljana Slovenia until now. I'm looking forward for the latest shows

Just as they did for the 2 earlier New York shows. Great they could make a deal with MSG so quickly.
Pity they haven't been able to strike a similar deal with the Royal Albert Hall.

I don't actually rate the show listening to many YT clips. Many better shows over the past couple of weeks.

The last concert always has a different value. For example historic.

The last concert always has a different value. For example historic.
Quite. The last show has traditionally been a good show however. This time was different. Perhaps having a few days off prior to the show was a mistake and put the band in holiday mood until they remembered they had one more show to do. Maybe there was more pressure than usual to do a good one as it may be the last? Who knows. It just wasn't the best. Not bad, but not great either.

Our friend Ingrid said Santa Barbara was the best of the many she attended so that's good enough for me to recommend it.
-
I received my Red Rocks download several days ago. What a fantastic concert! I get chills from the first flute note of Once Upon A Time In The West! The whole concert was really great, and I'm very happy they made available the soundboards for us to relive such a great experiences, even if it isn't a DVD! That is certainly one thing that is past due!

Oh man, just catching up on the last few recordings and I have to say that the Chicago recording is spoilt throughout by someone continually screaming/orgasming from start to finish! :o :o

Quite clearly audience - like dmg says it must of been the sight of Glenn's 'large' instrument!!!
I know we all love the master but Pleeeeeeassssse 'knock it off'!!!!
Climax is at the end of SAN!!!! or rather she does!!!!! :o :o
'Oh yes Mark' at the start of LH!!!!
-
Hahaha i noticed this too during the start of WAM :lol
Must be the loudest repeated audience screaming from one person? Since they edited out Mark's failing Aalesund MFN riff, and forgot some voice in one of the early recordings, they should have been able to maybe edit this out too?
-
Do we have any idea when the 'best of' collection is going to be made available for qualifying ticket purchasers?
-
Do we have any idea when the 'best of' collection is going to be made available for qualifying ticket purchasers?
I read somewhere that it would be released about three weeks after the end of the tour, so any time now I expect! :)
-
Surely they can't issue one before all the shows have been released?
-
If you ask Guy to choose the best of compilation it's of course the MSG show, since every new show is the best one ever :lol and he said MSG was better than all previous shows who were warm-ups...
-
MSG was truly phenomenal. Santa Barbara was also absolutely stunning.

Alexander Q: I have been trying to direct attention to that mixing error for months. Also here. I even contacted Richard himself and he said he’ll pass the info on. Now it’s too late and all the mixing done. I guess we’ll have to live with the Lisbon and Madrid Speedway version in which Richard comes in pretty ok in the mix. The truth must be: Mark wants the outro to sound like the current mix. But I still say the overall sound of the downloads is lightyears better that 2015 and 2013.
Guy Fletcher A: No, the truth is the concerts were mixed by someone who never saw the show, a very difficult task for any engineer. I oversaw the early mixes and corrected and guided as best I could from afar, but they were never going to be perfect. They are after all, board mixes. They vary greatly.
My take: Super amateur stuff as usual

I wonder how much work it would be for Guy to take the tour "Best Of" or even the MSG show and mix it himself...
Surely we would then be able to obtain a better quality product and there would be a better representation of the actual show out there.
The recordings from this tour have been a lot better than the last two, and they are a great keepsake for the diehard fans, but, they are still miles away from the stuff the likes of Springsteen releases via Nugs for example.

Unfair comparison as Springsteen and his management oversee wonderful boxsets and employ the best to remaster (very) old shows while Mark and his (nowhere near as good)manager employ the cheapest guys to offer the minimal at the highest price.
It is really sad how MK and his yes men treat his back catalogue and live recordings with such disdain.

I suspect it's all about the sales.
Springsteen has a bigger, more mainstream audience. He's part of their cultural furniture. The sales of said concerts in the US alone would dwarf anything Mark would put out. I wouldn't mind betting that all the costs of recording\documenting those shows are paid for up front by BS's distributor/record company. Knowing that they're almost certainly going to be profitable.
I don't think MK mistreats his live performances. He's just not at the level of perfection he once was and to be fair he's on record from at least 30ish years ago stating his strong dislike of live albums, mainly because 90% of them are not live.
I Wonder how many after the fact overdubs (or 'fixes' as they're known in the trade) there are on the average Springsteen live release?
-

Springsteen has a bigger audience but its hard core fans only really buying the nugs stuff and big boxsets.
Be very interesting to see what makes it onto the best of...

I would be surprised if the shows are over dubbed and fixed. These guys are out on tour... surely the last thing they want to do between shows is correct last nights mistakes?
I know one or two of the MK shows from this year seem to have "corrections", but I'd bet that MK knew little to nothing about that. Wouldn't surprise me if the remote mixing guy was instructed to nab parts from past shows to cover up the greenies.

I wasn't talking about the 'immediate release' kind of shows really.
When GF says that those kind of quick turnarounds are a challenge for an engineer he's so right. Imagine editing/mixing/mastering 64 channels of uncompressed audio for a 2\2.5 hour show, trying to make sure every song sounds ok, and all in a short space of time. I've been there and just a single show is a challenge in itself, let alone a whole tour with a tight release schedule.
I was referring more to official live album\dvd territory. Fixes might not even be to correct mistakes, more to correct technical issues. Listen to the Local Hero intro on the original release of Alchemy, you can clearly hear a buzzy guitar channel. The majority of producers\artists would have 'fixed' it. Imo as soon as you do that it's no longer a live album, and there are some big names who are guilty of this. The Eagles live album for example, is a joke, as huge chunks of it were re-recorded after the fact. As their own producer admitted later, harmony and instrument fixes made "courtesy of Federal Express.". And they're not the only ones....
-
So where are we at with the tour recordings? Still waiting on Phoenix, L.A. and MSG - or has everyone received them but me? ☹

Everyone is waiting for them.. Guess they had a week off, they are more than 1 week behind original "3 weeks after concert" schedule.
Austin is still not released either due to "technical issues".. was same with Stuttgart before that came out

Received Phoenix (September 21) link today to the recording. :clap

All concerts are now available!
MSG sound quality is pretty good, it lacks some high frequencies but that's totally fixable with EQ. I did some processing/mastering on a few 2015 recording (which were much worse) but will definitely work on this show and maybe some other 2019 shows, very precious stuff.

Official recordings from the RAH I would agree....
I think Markus was meaning all of the North America tour concerts were available and he is 100% correct....

Thank you, jbaent! I'm so pleased you included R&J from Verona. I really loved it, especially with the eo eo.... :)
-
Corned Does That. lol
The difficulty I would have with this sort of compilation is choosing a best version of songs like CBC, MM, HFOH, SG/YLT or Postcards. Even his jokes have more spontaneity! Well done though on not using a random generator.
-
Thanks Val and Dmg.
Some songs are difficult to choose because they are so the same... so in some cases I used a location criteria, Why aye man is a geordie expression, so I took it from Newcastle, Piper has something Scottish, so I choose Glasgow, Romeo and Verona, obviously, Sailing and Philadelphia, obvious connection, Your latest trick is a song about NY, so again, obvious choice etc etc
Despite being obvious choices, the versions were great, so, perfect match!
The rest, I spend all this months listening to the recordings and taking notes. Obviously each of us would do a different compilation, but this one please me and I think it's good enough to please other fans, at least more than the official disaster compilation :lol

My favourite is St Julien (even though he gets the lyrics mixed up), or Kestenholtz with the extended intro to allow the audience in. In later versions he improvised during the solo parts which is always good to hear.

Thank you very much. It's playing all day :) Nice to see/hear a song from Lisbon Show!

Just downloaded and listened to Toronto as it was suggested round here as a good one. Indeed it is very good, wonderful BIA amongst others (apart from one obvious mistake by Jim). Anyone got another recommendation for best recording of the American leg of the tour?

Red Rocks was a great show IMHO, but you can't go far wrong with any from the latter part of the tour, with the exception of the final show. MSG sounded like an earlier show being not as smooth as the other later ones for some reason.

Happy someone else liked Toronto too, I ran through it at work in my headphones during a day of work on my own, really liked it :thumbsup

Nice, can you turn that off please' - turn that sh#@ off' during STP from Stuttgart. :disbelief
Same in Krakow, think it's during DWB. "Can you turn that shit off? ....thanks."
Or in WAM...."drills and hammers, please turn it off!" :lol
What is it that he doesnt like? Filming or filming with front-flashlight?

The problem during the last tour has been people with the front flashlight on. He doesn't like that the audience film the concert as well, but the main problem has been the flash lights...

Thanks for your response!
Yeah i thought i was the flash lights. You cant really do anything against the filming cause lots of people film.
But i can imagine the front flashlights blind somehow!
