I have asked Radio Bremen whether Mark Knopfler is actually a guest at 3 after 9 because of the announcement that he is guest on Norwegian television the same day.
This is the response:
"Thank you for your letter. Mark Knopfler will be as a guest on Friday in our talk show 3nach9. The show is recorded from 18.30 bis 20.30 clock."
If he flies to Norway after this recording - that's hard, two shows in one evening ?

The Norwegian/Swedish show was recorded in London this monday and will air this friday. :)

As there are seven guests in this talkshow, it is not easy to predict when he will come up. As it will be the only musical act in that show, guess not too early, around middle part or even closer to the end. In the lists of guests MK is named at first position however. We will have to watch the complete show.

I still, occasionally, watch the 2007 show and try to hear what he was saying above the German translation. It's amusing to see a few raised eyebrows and knowing glances around the table during MK's part of the show! Subtitles would have been great in this instance. Looking forward to seeing the latest edition! :)

Looks like Marcus Cliffe is back on bass! He said that in his Facebook.

Yontwocrows, you are from Germany?
LE
-
I'm an emigrated Austrian living in Stuttgart ;)
-
OK! Never was aware of that! Weren't you the guy with the very precious and interesting posts when discussing some lyrics last year or so? Marbletown, Back To Tupelo...
LE
-
Yes, that was me... At least my d esperate tries to understand the lyrics. Ha ha, i can remember. These song discussions were pretty interesting... :thumbsup
-
Recording this. Too boring ;)
-
yes, that's the better choice
-
Maybe its an interesting talk, but as I dont understand a word, i hope MK comes soon!
-
Jbaent, usually the music act - if there is one - comes late
-
A good chance to learn Deutsch ;D
-
Yes, there'll be time enough ;D
-
How long are we talking about?
-
Oh man don't ask, u don't want to know... But one thing is certain: You'll speak perfectly German afterwards
-
Oh gosh, they replaced dear MK with a doppelganger....
-
:thumbsup
-
I feel sorry but something says i am about to abandon learning Deutsch for the secondvtime in my life ;D my baby daughter likes to wake up at 7 in the morning and, it is likely than in less than ten minutes i will fall asleep :-\
I hope the live part is online tomorrow.

ROFL, my little boy does the same. Most of the time it is 6 o'clock AM. Ah, the joy of being a father :-)
Have a good night, jbaent! I have just about 15 minutes of power left until I fall over.
-
Oh dear, JB quit one minute before MK came on :)
-
Sounds better when played totally live
-
Really bad voice
-
The days of quick snappy licks are over... :'(
-
Yes better real live, he probably learned from the Norwegian show when coming in to late for last part ;)

Cool is what both in Tracker interview and on this vid Mark plays with a tuner. Tracker interview was a rare example of Mark actually tuning the thing.
-
Oh dear, JB quit one minute before MK came on :)
I was about to leave when I heard "Mark Knopfler" so I stayed a little longer, what a great perfomance, bad voice, lot of mistake playing guitar, but energetic and live, this was much better than the Norwegian show... Now I can go to bed...
Feeew, I was about to loose it, good night mates!
-
oh yes. Bad voice and actually bad playing at all
Ianto was great...

Nice to hear him say: rehearsals in April then directly into touring otherwise he would forget his chords.
Well Mark, we just heard that... :P :P :P
But anyway great to see him again in a show.
He had to do it as the german ticket sales are not that good until now...
-
You keep saying that is there any proof? Almost all shows are nearly sold out?

I suppose as any other performer, whether it's a musician or an athlete or whatever, that you require practicing - so that you eventually are able to step up.
MK is in pre-season right now, it can only get better ;D
-
Oh how fab, sure there were a few 'hiccups' but MK being MK gets himself 'out of jail' quite easily.... good to get a taste of Live Strat!! Great little interview too, love the 'learn chords' quote as he was clearly unhappy with that performance...
Everything will improve once he gets into the swing of things again!!
Played back through my sound system and it does sound good..
Thanks for posting.
-
Pre-season? Geez, very rusty there. :-\
Thanks for the link.
-
yes sounded quiet rusty there, and voice not great either , but sure it come together
-
I think he made the "remember my chords" comment to let people know he wasn't happy with his performance!

Yes, the Saalplan on eventim. All lot of empty seats till now. Normally it sells much quicker.
But hey... 12 gigs in Germany are maybe 2 too much

I read all of the comments about the show first of all, so it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I watched the video! Actually, I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that it wasn't as bad as I expected. Of course, there were some blips, but on the whole, not bad at all! :thumbsup Yes, he was wearing the same kind of t-shirt and shirt as in 2007! ;D

This is already linked in the 'Mark visits German Tv' thread..

I'm a little bit concerned about his left hand. He holds it during the interview in a very strange way and it seems that he tries to massage it a little bit. Does he feel a little pain in there? May i be wrong!

terrible comments here.

I think that we'll might see Baryl played in different key on tour, this one (G) obviously doesn't work live for vocals :-\

Wow that was one big middle finger...
So before everyone thank you for that one by supporting your vid. Please explain what's up with the teddy bear? The video was alright, nothing about that.
But when he first came on it made me think of this:
-
sure.
just my interpretation of the lyrics. the teddy, of course, is only a metaphor
for me it´s not a girl/boy story, it´s about childhood and friendships there over the life.
the big "teddy" returns home to bring the other teddy a lost friend ... and to bring the childhood back in the house ...
there are many nice films in this contest, a lot of with boy meets girl and girl leaves boy ... i thought it´s more about friendship that lasts the whole life ... not a classic love story
Cheers and a good time for all with our "rusty bad singing / playing hero"
@ love expresso:
"The minibus driver says and you are who" ?

It's not rare that his playing and his voice are under par during these Tv/Radio Shows and
then he shows up on the tour few weeks later in a much better shape
Indeed. And we have seen worse before. I think also that playing with a capo caused some difficulties with licks.
-

True.
Probably because of the month long rehearsals done in the meantime.

i liked the song yesterday. read my words again.
i had some contacts to people here in "private" to exchange rare material and so of Mark from my working time at television and film documentarys where i met Mark, let´s keep contact with emails ! i will write you next week, found some cool stuff last week.

sorry, WHO is rude ?
the people here telling that Mark only produces bad singing and badly played guitar instead of giving applause that he is producing every 2 years an great album with an extended (!) tour ?
he is rusty ?
i don´t think so ... sorry.
-
Sorry it must be me but I find your writing hard to understand
I get it now!
You are actually like the majority of us on here condemning anyone who put's negative remarks about MK! Well good for you and I'm with you 110%.... :clap
-
so, it is NOT rude here, in an forum dedicated to MK to say
Mark is rusty
Mark is singing bad
Mark is playing bad
i really must ask, YOU are right here ?
my opinion. simple. what i saw and heared yesterday was a fresh perfomance of an actually 65 years old Rockstar who is doing a promotion tour after a long life of highest creativity others only can dream of ... if someone thinks this is rusty and bad ... well, ... you know it ... i don´t think so.

now you got it ;-)

Again I agree wholeheartadly with you....
Having personally seen & heard MK in a very personal 'charity show' 18 months ago in which he hadn't 'warmed up' he did appear 'rusty' at first but as far as I'm concerned he is 'the master' and always will be!!!

Exactly right. It was a slightly different version than the album and really loved it! The final Guitar break was really good in the sense he was 'behind the rhythm' with the Strat and I really enjoyed that. Vocals were fine to me too, but obviously once the practice sessions begin his voice will greatly improve....

i am assuming it is the german translation into english that comes across as rude, not necessarily meant that way. some do it better then others.
@jr: no one here is dissing MK, just noticing that he is not on touring speed yet, and all of us know that when on speed, nobody comes even close to our man.
so chill.

Nice to see you Pottel.
I must say this Cliff Barnes guy has posted one of the weirdest and strangest post I have seen for a long time around here. It is not the thing about the minibus, I had a good laugh about it although I would categorize that as PRETTY RUDE. (I reported that to moderators)
One guy is turning up, lamenting that we all are rude, then in the next sentence saying "YOU are rusty" meaning the COMPLETE forum obviously, not a single member or so, then announcing he wants to leave because of that, but at the same time asks us to support some strange YouTube video, THEN again shouting against ALL about maybe meet at the shows or maybe better not, THEN by the way send some nice greetings to rusty LE, then turning up again, although I thought he wanted to leave... what else can you say to such a person better than Goodbye? Really, I am not interested in hearing anything from this strange guy, thank you very much. I

He is on our side as it were. I initially fell for it too thinking the comments were rude but it's purely the way it has been written that's all....
Hello Pottel :wave
-
It has nothing to do with "our side" or not. He can stay on his side. But calling a Complete forum rude, announcing to leave it, but not doing so, lamenting around, talking nonsense, being totally rude is not what fits in with this forum.
Mark had a bad voice last night and his singing was under his usual niveau, I say that as often as I want to, if he does not feel ok with it, he can take a minibus to MKNews, maybe Terry has on open ear for him.

Well now I'm really looking forward to be on monday evening to watch MK perform Beryl Live on French TV and I'm pretty sure that it will be great for a 65 years old Rock Star who happens to be One of the best songwriter and Musician from 20th century!! Let us feel glad that he's still composing, writing, recording, making promotions before Touring around the World, knowing now that he said he still enjoys to do all this!! In France we have Jean Jacques Goldman ( another best musician who composed albums for Celine Dion in french) who used to do the very same than MK, 10 years ago, then stopped suddenly the whole business except composing for others and making once in a year charity gigs for poor people!! He thought it was better to marry again, have 3 daughters and raise them because he couldn't do it for his 3 first children!!! The Fans are still asking him to come back but he answered that there were not such plans in his mind!!! So feel lucky that MK is still very interested in doing his job!!! That's my humble opinion on this discussion!! :wave

You must be a busy man pottel, great to see you back

After watching both the Norweigan and German programs thanks to links listed on this site :clap, my impression is that Mark is finally beginning to feel time gaining on him. When asked what he misses about the 'old days' he references the indomitable youth (or something to that effect) and then after playing on the German program, he says it takes him longer to remember the chords. My sense is that this is a new perspective for MK who always had the ultimate confidence in his musical ability. Oh, and the red eye thing. I had an elderly relative that developed the same thing as she got older. So, I don't think it has anything to do with getting a cold, but rather is a condition that is here to stay for MK. Saw Gordon Lightfoot recently who is still at it in his seventies. Hope MK doesn't follow in his footsteps, but rather, knows when to call it a day. I am not saying he is there yet, but I think for the first time, it is entering his consciousness.
-
What I noticed about him was that he has lost some weight since the Tracker films and particularly since the last 3 nach 9 show in 2007.
-
Yes Mark is ageing.
The most depressive thing for me is not to desperately hope for a "one off" DS reunion (or a TOL come back int he setlist) but at some point realise that Mark had become too old to be able to do a decent "one off" DS reunion (or perform a decent version of TOL anymore).
In a few words, my favorite guitar hero slowly (bur surely) goes down the drain.
-

I think that's far too harsh! I think he's been trying too hard to get into shape for the tour and has, perhaps, gone a bit too far! He's hardly gone down the drain when he's just released the best album for years!

I've always loved his songwriting, and I still do on this album.
-
His songwriting has really matured I think over the years and to me very well matured!!
I think that there are fantastic lyrics throught this beautiful album..... :clap
-
His performance wasn't that good on the show and he obviously saw that himself. If I speak for myself I have no doubts that when he's ready for the the tour, it sounds a lot better, he has his 'normal' band members etc etc. No worries guys, Mark is age-ing but as long as he can come up with an album such as Tracker where his singing sounds better than ever.. You shouldn't worry, every little thing's gonna' be alright! :)
-
Saying that his singing last night was crap has nothing to do with "worrying". But I would not say too loud that MK was not good on the show. Sue Ellen might turn up and punch you right onto your nose...

Quite agree, MK will be fine after a few rehearsals - don't worry.

As a songwriter he may have just released the best album for years but my guitar hero is slowly fading.

He's hardly gone down the drain when he's just released the best album for years!
Indeed!
But as a songwriter?
I'm staying out of it this time! :-X

Saying that his singing last night was crap has nothing to do with "worrying". But I would not say too loud that MK was not good on the show. Sue Ellen might turn up and punch you right onto your nose...

Yes, agree. MK just needs a few rehearsals and he will be fine!!

Shouldn't he have done that before a live TV performance? Not very professional IMO.

I have always thought that MK looks uncomfortable on this sort of TV show. Just look at his body language - wringing his hands and generally looking ill at ease. He's much better on stage, in front of a large audience where he can't see their faces, apart from the first rows, of course! He has always struck me as very nervous in front of the camera, especially where there's a small audience. ;)

I would agree on this. This is why he always likes to visit the same shows, feeling comfort with hosts that he already knows.

Yes he is always very nervous, certainly not a TV or interview chap.
He was espeically nervous at our little 'show' in Bridport but he soon relaxed and did his thing, He even answered questions quite happily from the audience too.
You imagine yourself recording an album quite a few months ago and then suddenly having to get into the spirit of promoting it on tv/radio and then taking it on the road at the age of 65....
-
Geez, you're all talking like he's ancient and it's amazing he can still walk or something! He's only 65 and that's not old these days. He's had a good life, living in luxury in good health and not having to work hard or under any stress so I don't really see why it's so amazing he can still play a guitar at 65 years of age - he damn well should! And be able to do it bloddy well too! There are many other musicians his age and older still producing music too.

Well only by 25 years.... :smack
-
It is right to say that he appears to be much more relaxed in front of great audiences when he does HIS thing. But sitting in the back of a TV studio in a foreign country, about an hour or so and wait to be announced with the usual Dire Straits Superstar related stuff, I can imagine that this is not what he exactly loves doing the most. His nervous behaviour has never really changed all those years now, it is somewhat likeable. I heard a him talking very fluid and intelligent stuff, and he even smiled at her, so I guess it was not a too bad night for him. I guess he is doing this TV stuff because it is part of the deal with the distribution and record company?

I know 65 isn't old, but everyone is different. Some people are old at 40! Some are young at 80! ;) I think MK is doing very well and although he says he has an easy life, for example he was saying somewhere recently that he gets off lightly as opposed to Kitty, who works and looks after all aspects of family life.
I wouldn't think for one minute that his life is stress-free, though - just think of all the things that are involved with the music industry - money being a big factor. It must cost a fortune to keep the studio going, not to mention everything involved with touring, Hiring huge venues, down to smaller things like paying everyone in catering et al. I know he has PC, but ultimately the money comes from MK!

21 years young, hey superval......

Mark just looked tired, and maybe a bit under the weather to me.
Voice sounded a little shaky compared to Norwegian promo as well, to me anyway.
Like others have mentioned, he looks less and less comfortable with these type of shows, but they have to be done I suppose.
I'm sure all will be fine once the tour gets underway.

I have tix for 6 shows so I hope so. But others signs during his latest tours makes me quite insecure about the subject.

just for your info about Mark and (TV) Shows:
i met Mark 3 times in my life
1. on every street tour, i had backstage passes for Europe Tour
the closest was in Olympia Stadion München, Open Air 92
at this time he was a Rockstar, security all around - he was a Star - i think he was more nervous to this time than today, as he smoked before the gig and a lot (!) of people around him ..
2.
the sailing to philadelphia album:
to this time i was director and author of "harald schmidt show" in germany
it was one of my wishes that he perfoms at this show, and it happened someday
i have the complete rehearsal (around 1,5h) of "what it is" on a digi beta tape
he wanted to get the perfect sound in the studio, and it took its time
in this show there is a great moment
in the rehearsel of the whole show something great happened:
Mark entered the stage.
there was a Band called "Helmut Zerlett band" - it was our Showband.
In this Band Mel Collins was playing Sax since years
Mark saw him and shout: "OMG - this is Mel Collins!" The had a lot of to talk.
It was the one and only act in the history of this Show (!!) where the Show had a break, the audience had to leave the studio that Mark were able to do another soundtest (!!) - addicted to be perfect i would say.
ironic thing: there was a buzzing of an amplifier all over the song, you hear it quite from the beginning. still i have all sounds and tracks of this live gig on tape.
i think i was 3 years everyday in the room of the editor in chief of this Show, Manuel Andrack, and said to him: please invite MK to the Show, he is at Letterman with every new album, he must be in Germany´s Late Night too.
So believe it or not, this live act is born by me for a big part:
the live act is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2unUZaMBDA
3.
i met him at "Bambi" Award in Hamburg
he was playing there "Boom like that"
i did a documentary of this Show.
he played half playback.
it was the time right after the accident. i was able to talk with him on stage.
i said to him: don´t break your bones again.
he said to me: promised. british humor.
everytime i met him, he was quite shy, but never nervous. not at all.
sometimes this artists are tired, yes, everyone who travels a lot knows: every luxury can´t avoid that you are tired when you travel.
in the case of yesterday:
don´t interpretate too much:
the light of this show was ... not very nice for an artist.
i say this as a professional filmmaker and photograph.
there are 2 lights from the ground - normally you use those light to give a dramatic evil character in theatre or film.
and studio light is very hard always.
the mix of the song is not state of art, but there is very less time for all.
and yes, with 65 you are not 20.
but i had the solid impression that he enjoyed the song, especially the 2nd half.
he is not nervous. not really. believe me. but he wants to speak in / with his songs, not so much in interviews.
i will see Mark on 31May in Salem. Looking forward. Indeed.
that´s all from me. promised.

I wouldn't call it strange. It touches me somehow and that isn't a bad thing. And I see that you put a lot of thought and effort into shooting these scenes. I'll look into the ways how I can vote for your video. Good luck!

thx ;-)
final decision in this contest is ... the master himself.
you can log in at talenthouse / or follow it on markknopfler.com and then you can vote for the videos
some very nice films there i must admit, i have my personal favourite and it would be a great winner for this contest.
but i wanted to tell this "teddy" story, Mark would say: i didn´t produce it for the charts or awards ... ;-)
-
short update:
spoke with someone who was in the studio in Bremen.
said, very small room and the instruments were quite loud, and no earphones here for Mark.
for me, i like this bit "raw" sound. there is another audience clip in youtube recorded by a smartphone, and you can hear that the drums (as Mr. Thomas is not really a beginner) are strong ...
so - more a "dirty" club gig. but i like. nothing i would name "bad"
-
Also, the audience was dead. No excitement over the fact that they were lucky to be at MK's first live performance EVER of what I believe will be the opening song of the concerts.

Thanks for the links and that great history, JRE. I never get tired of hearing What it Is. Are you DogSwede1 who puts up all those great MK videos on youtube? I've spent more hours than I should admit to watching and listening. If you are DogSwede, many many thanks. And also thanks to ShangriLa who devotedly uploads onto the youtube AMIT channel.

No seriously more life in a morgue me thinks, mind you the nice blonde seemed quite happy!! ;)

another view

no, i don´t agree.
if you know the guests there ...
the man with the glasses sometimes in front of camera is Peer Steinbrück, politician - he is a huge Knopfler Fan (told this several times in interviews in germany) and just enjoyed the song without jumping and clapping. later he says how he loves Sailing to Philadlphia.
The guy eating did clap loud at the end - but had an interview before and it was a deep interview and maybe he just was hungry - i see 1000 people eating and drinking during concerts.
some visitors are clapping during whole song. the 2 women having fun in the round - so what you expect. it´s not a Knopfler concert ... after the song and interview they talked more about Mark btw in a positive way.
-
I personally thought he played and sound fine, maybe I'm easily pleased.
I am starting to get concerned though that people are getting angry on this forum everytime someone is critical of MK.
One of the reasons we set up this forum was to be free to express our opinions. I would hate to think that people are being pressured into holding back on what they really think, even though I usually disagree.
Oh and I love LE'sLE's Cliff Barnes/Ray Krebbs lines, hilarious!
-
The musical act in such talkshows seems to have something of a "break" for the guests, so they do not have to expect to be asked something suddenly by the hosts. These kind of shows often try to reach some interaction between the guests. So during Mark's playing they maybe felt a little like taking a deep breath, have a drink, eat something etc.
I thought he was very well received from the audience, already at the beginning of the show when the guests were announced, there was some excited jubilation noticeable.
He was guest already two times, and as a guest sitting the full two hours (with simultanous dolmetcher in his ear) he seemed somewhat unhappy and not too relaxed. This time, he was more announced as a "top star" and the highlight of the show.

yes. Expresso Love (our l´amor weekly paperman from portugal) is really a funny person, so creative. He knows Dallas. That´s pretty hilarous. Indeed. But he forgot to call me Bobby, Lucy, Jock, Miss Ellie ...
Bit disappointed. Maybe he is still shocked about Mark´s bad perfomance. Forgiven.
-
So you guys are both German, was Dallas big in Germany?
-
I was more shocked about your arrogance (I refer to your Minibus quotation). You wanted to leave the forum after dissing the COMPLETE forum, so I understood that part of your post as honest (it wasn't obviously as you are still posting) and I said goodbye to you.
Sometimes one needs not more than 30 seconds to know that he don't want to get any further involved with some person. You belong into this categorie for me.
Therefore it is better for me to shut up when you post, otherwise some US Editors will start and delete my posts again.
It seems you have not entirely understood what a fan forum is about. It is not about praising the "master" all the time. If you think that his performance was great, please say it, but allow others to utter if they did not like it. No need to judge ALL members of a forum as CRUSTY, announcing to go, not before begging for some YouTube clips by the way, and then just.. don't do as promised.
And it's the other way around, it's Love Expresso, and I am not from Portugal. But who cares.
You will not read any further reaction from me. Ingrid once gave me a very good advice, and from today on I will follow that one.

Whenever I watch the Blue Moon Of Kentucky vid where Mark sings next to Scotty More, then pulls out a casual sweet solo flanked by Albert Lee, I realise this is a man who has never lacked confidence. :)

The more I listen to this, the better the performance seems to get! Perhaps MilesAndrewColby has a point! I still don't think he was pleased with it himself though, hence the (hidden) comment afterwards and it did lack a little but it'll come before the tour kicks-off.

vocals were a bit insecure, there was the odd lick missing, but considering everything, it was better then many other "first" performances before a tour...
i always hated dallas by the way. anyone wanna shoot me?

If I remember back to 2000, the Parkinson show was the first performance of WII and that was excellent IMO.
His vocals were really low here, almost like Quality Shoe at moments!
Good to see Gene Hackman as a guest too though. ;)

His voice sounded pretty bad but maybe he had a cold or something, lots of bugs around at the moment.
Guitar wise, reminded me of shows from the 1980 / 1 tour in terms of tone and performance. A very direct and clean tone that accentuates any minor mishaps. Wercher 80 is a good comparible.
Without doubt the worst thing about this performance though was the miserable audience. One dude the camera picks out at the start actually looks pretty angry...maybe he's upset he's not playing in Russia this time round or objects to MKs political stance on certain matters. Yes that's a joke.

Lol, a good one. I guess nothing wrong there exept very different set up. 'They always let me get away with murder' Mark said, so...
It's like Mark trying to tune a guitar without tuner on Hay On Wye and ending up passing it to Saggers. Just messed up stage set-up.
