I like the song a lot. The rhythm does sound a little like a reconstruction of sultans though, but I am not complaining.  The song wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Dire Straits album.

On spotify they changed Mks pic to one of him in the Love Over Gold era. Interesting from a marketing perspective.

I've taken my time to digest the new song and on reflection it's very weak and not for me. It's sounds like an early DS's cast off. Very interesting considering he has a new record company.

Weak is putting it mildly. The song sounds like it was put together from bits and pieces of other MK/DS songs. There is really no originality to the song. No feeling that you're hearing something new and different. Instead what I hear is recycling of older material.

Wow, you know when you've listened to the leak version too many times when you're missing the static noises and Windows 8 sounds...  ;D

I agree that on reflection it is very weak overall with the lyrics and basic idea behind it being shallow in the extreme.  In fact, the lyrics sound like part of a nursery rhyme.  If he thinks his songs become signposts in peoples lives he'd better think again - this one is more like a traffic cone.

I do however like that it has some pace (for a change) and I quite like the melody.

I think it may be better when it is heard amongst other songs on the album - that's what I hope, but what I still fear is that it will become a skipper for me, like Donegan has become!   I prefer slow-growers.   :think

I agree.  Slow-growers are usually best.  Kingdom of Gold has slowly grown on me as has Privateering.  This is just another Redbud Tree.

I think it's a very good choice for radio-play, though.   Something upbeat and catchy is what is needed and Beryl ticks all the boxes, so will probably attract a lot of interest from listeners, which will be good for the album.    :)

Apart from the lovely guitar,I like Mark's vocals very much!    Let's face it, the lyrics are a bit of a tongue-twister, which can't be easy to sing (I've tried and failed  ;D), but he's managed it admirably!    :thumbsup
