It's a fact, he said it just in stage in Barcelona.... :'(
-
I never thought that the last big one would be not touring in Europe too :(
-
Yes reacted to this too.. not surprised.
LET'S ENJOY THIS TO THE MAXIMUM
-
Not surprising at all....
-
I'm very sad, but not at all surprised. :'(

I'm very sad, but not at all surprised. :'(
Reality hits I'm afraid Val and indeed very sad...
-
I'm old man. No more traveling for me"
I do not want to believe it...
-
Genuinely gutted even though it had to happen at some point.
-
wait and see....
-
He will always want to play his new songs live! At least I hope
-

I guess 'one off' or a few night stints at the RAH are an option??

It was genuinely sad to hear it confirmed during a concert. You could've heard a pin drop.

Yes, indeed....

I don’t think he’ll actually stop playing live completely. I think he’ll continue playing shows for as long as he is physically capable of doing so, but it’ll most likely be one-off gigs here and there, such as promo shows when he releases new albums, or short runs of concerts at places like the Albert Hall. It’s immensely sad that the touring will come to an end. He has made a lot of wonderful memories for all of us fans but, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Hopefully there is still plenty of new music ahead.

I do hope he’ll choose to play at some countries in Europe. Some concerts in Germany Holland and France.
Something like Clapton.

I guess he may play in the UK mainly, Clapton just played in Japan, one of his biggest fan base.
-
Clapton did play France Germany and the UK in 2018. Now he is in Japan indeed.
-
Yes indeed very sad words. However if he plays only some concerts as EC, it would be fine.
Less is more ☺️

It'll be interesting to hear what Mark says when he comes to the UK. I suppose we'll find out in Leeds.
I thought wouldn't it be nice if the audience gave him a standing ovation when he said this as our farewell gift to him, thanking him for all the wonderful music he has given us over the years. Better than just gasping. I think it would be a nice gesture.

I'll be standing and clapping (probably crying too) that's for sure! ;D
We need a BIG banner - Mr Superval says! :o
-
The only thing I am surprised about is the fact that he is saying it. Most of us knew in our gut this was more than likely it. I always assumed he would ride off without saying a word confirming it. He has never been one to share a lot of information.
I'll be standing and clapping (probably crying too) that's for sure! ;D

Funny you mention that, I was planning on making one for LA...

GOODBYE MARK...THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES
Or something like that? Maybe a quote from a song along these lines?
THANK-YOU GOODNIGHT NOW IT'S TIME TO GO HOME
-
Yes, something like that! :wave
We need a whole row of people to hold the banner with the second one! ;D
-
Looking at the footage from last night on YT and listening to his goodbyes, said as usual with such understated grace, I feel a great happiness and sadness at the same time. You can see that he's not the player he once was, and that he's probably struggling a little bit physically. Its so sad to see him rooted to the spot and carrying himself awkwardly, but at the same time there was almost a care free full on effort to get every last drop out of those songs last night. He really meant it.
Its almost as if he has become one of those hard working but slightly down trodden failing characters portrayed so beautifully in so many wonderful songs, and I find it deeply moving.
Even though you'll soon be gone, you will live forever.

How very eloquently expressed. My feelings too. Watching him bouncing up and down to every beat back in the Alchemy days or BIA tour is a stark contrast to his static stage presence today.

Its completely understandable and I'm not in any way criticising him, I love the guy, he's probably the sole the reason I teach music today. Cant help but wish for a small transplant of Jagger or Springsteen DNA just to prolong the inevitable goodbye.....

I'm curious whether his stiff movements are due some sort of illness. Arthritis for instance. A man like him who is so sensible and is free from the worries of "the common man" has no excuse for not exercising and staying reasonably fit.
It is sad to hear the words of farewell, but it's only the big tours. I'm sure there's a lot of good stuff to come.

Yeah clearly he got older, BUT, based on some youtube videos I think his guitar playing is more fluid compared to 2015 and also quite powerful :clap

Yes, I agree - beautifully said. Still the same elegant MK, though. :)

Absolutely. Especially on Telegraph road! (Silvertown was outstanding live, it hasnt got the feeling on the videos, air was buring ☺️😊)

Yes, It was really rocking live. I hope it will stays in the set for all of you who attends a show.

Yep, I think physically there is something up with MK...he seems all a bit hunched and stuck to the spot....makes you wonder as he isn't THAT ancient?!
So he isn't Iggy Pop but I suspect the physical issues are something that crept up over years and now make going on long tours too difficult....I suspect that if MK could have carried on he would have...

I'd look at it from Marks point of view. He's in his 70s, and given the law of averages time for anyone at that age is a precious commodity. You'd want to spend the time with the people who really matter to you and eek out every second. I don't blame him for one minute for giving up touring, I just hope we have lots and lots of great new music to look forward to, and maybe if we are very lucky he will hit the boards locally once or twice too...

Indeed!
-
Yesterday I had the impression that MK looks smaller... Its weird but it's like he has some back problems or something...
He looks quite sad and tired sometimes, and this is just the start of the tour, it's going to be a long way to him...
-
Yes agreed, he doesn't look comfortable, and I should imagine his back still has issues and he may even suffer with Arthritis.
-
I think he seems only smaller because the brass section stands on a small platform, which makes them taller.. confuses your brain (illusion) :lol
-
No, he looks smaller in general, when he stands next to Guy, for example...
-
Actually, he's not in his 70s, he be 70 in August. He looks like he's in his 80s though which is a concern. He does appear to have shrunk which can be attributed to age or postural issues/back problems.
The way he hold his guitar now is different and kind of awkward looking and I'm guessing this is perhaps to save pain on his back. I suffer from frozen shoulder and postural problems myself and can understand this. The new angle may alleviate some of the weight across the top of his neck. I do this when carrying things around my neck for long periods such as my camera.
-
He gained some weight since 2015, which also could contribute to that it seems he have shrunk. Also, he might be a little stiff nowadays, but he certainly does not look like he's in his 80s in my opinion
-

I know plenty of people older than Mark (go to the football with them), my parents are only a few years younger and yet they not only look younger but are physically more able bodied. Mark appears to have had a dramatic downturn physically since last tour which is very sad. :'(
After show two and looking at his physical condition I'm more than a bit concerned about just what he has taken on here.

Could it be that bad? :think
No doubt the touring schedule is tough this time again, although I spot more gaps and many 2-3days in a row instead of 3-4 days...
But yes, he's not getting younger. Hopefully we all get to see him one last time this year :thumbsup
-
Watching the clips fills me with a lot of sadness, I must say. Mark's physical state, the melancholy of many of the songs, the huge stage and arena which create a lack of intimacy, an era soon coming to an end, etc. Even when watching Once Upon a Time, I can't help but feeling sad. I am actually struggling a little with how to cope with this.
-
Mark did say in interviews last year that he would give up touring before giving up writing and recording. I am just in shock that it has occurred so soon, thought he was talking about a few years time, not a few months.
I do like the fact that he has chosen to announce his decision to stop touring personally (as it were) in front of his fans, rather than promoting this as a "farewell" tour beforehand.
Count me in on any way of showing him our appreciation at Leeds or the RAH.
Best regards and enjoy the shows to come
-
I attended the opening night and was surprised by the words he choose to announce his retirement from touring. I would like an exact transcript of it because if I have well understand his speech it was a sad goodbye to Barcelona.
-
I am not sad that this is the last tour. I am happy that I got to know Mark's music in the first place, and it has brought me nothing but joy since first hearing Sultans of Swing in 1988. He has had a profound influence on my life, both in terms of a musical and emotional impact, but also he is the reason I learned to play guitar, and attempted to write songs. He is a giant in the music world, and always will be. This is not a time for sadness, but a time to celebrate the end of an extraordinary contribution to live performance over the years, remember Live Aid, Mandela tribute, Alchemy, Brothers In Arms tour to name a few. His songs, music, lyrics and guitar playing is like no other, he is and always will be a legend for me. If this is the last tour, so be it, he deserves the rest. He will always write and record songs. And we will always have the memories.

Alright Barcelona - happy or great to see you again

i always loved to be in Barcelona
so, once again is, hello Barcelona
but now, i am an oooold man, you know
so, i wanna thank you Barcelona for all the many happy years of me coming to say hello
it is also goodbye Barcelona for me, i am very sad
so hello Barcelona, dear Barcelona, i love Barcelona
but i will still try to make some records and write songs, but has to be no more travelling for old granddad, nevermind

I agree with everything you say. I am sad, of course, but I'm glad that he has decided to do it now and not become one of those rock stars who never know when to give up. As you say, he will still write and record songs and we will have our precious memories!

I would not be that pessimistic. I mean look at this for instance, and it also worked:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5AN2BwaimE;
I am sure Mark has best medical care, they know what this tour means. And remember he always looked somewhat grummy which will not get less when he ages. Also his playing I dont agree with some saying he cannot make it anymore; of course he needs breaks but looking at the first close-up clip on TR from Barcelona I would say it is very nice, and to my view more precise and fluid than last tour (remember Seville...). And the sound is over the top for me. Lets be positive...

Remember that Mark has to carry more weight on his shoulders (metaphorically speaking) as guitarist too. Without the guitar playing the tour would be over. I'm sure Collins could just sit on stage and sing with a band behind him but people go to hear Mark play as well.
We all remember Seville when Mark and others were ill. I really wish these videos were taken down from YouTube.
P.S. Getting to that sunbed was like a landscape to be negotiated for poor old Phil!

Pretty good TR...
-
Yes, that show. All the Spanish shows suffered the effects of the bug that passed through the band. Lucca too.

Pretty good TR...
puh, look at 11:49 and the following seconds; its wrecked...; and in general I find it much more unprecise in all the tone, bendings and death notes than two days ago...
-
Well, MK did a tour seated playing guitar as good as ever...
-
Remember that Mark has to carry more weight on his shoulders (metaphorically speaking) as guitarist too.
This show you mean?
Pretty good TR...
puh, look at 11:49 and the following seconds; its wrecked...; and in general I find it much more unprecise in all the tone, bendings and death notes than two days ago...
I agree. Not only is the version poorly executed but the tone is poor. The version played in Barcelona was far better in both respects and it was only the first night of the tour IMHO.
-
I did not follow last tour as intense as I am this time... I saw in earlier posts about the band being ill in Spain 2015. Did not know, were they tired/exhausted at stage as well during this?
-
Actually, he's not in his 70s, he be 70 in August.
I agree wholeheartedly dmg, unfortunately MK does look like he's 'Old before his time' as my late Grandfather would have said.
He does certainly look a lot older than 69........
He is rooted to the spot with hardly any movement around the stage and when he does move he shuffles...
I do find it incredibly sad to see him like it and only hope he does make the whole tour......
Again like qjamesfloyd has quite rightly put on here that we all have our own unique memories of MK and how special 'the master' is to each one of us... I shall never, ever forget meeting him, chatting and shaking his hand.......
Blimey it sounds like an obituary, but in some little way seeing him the way we have on stage the fire is slowly dying. :'( :'(
-
It can‘t be that bad. Otherwise, don‘t you think he would do the whole concert sitting like in 2010? It seems his health is at least good enough to do it without sitting most of the time. And 2010 shows us that he WOULD do it sitting down, so..

he's just older that's all and with a few health issues I suspect......
Wonder if the stool may well be the way forward again tbh

The stool worked for B.B. King.

I'm not so sure. When you need to rock, standing up can help a lot and being seated also restricts breathing for vocals. :-\

Everything was great from Manchester 2010, including all of the rocky songs. Brighton was pretty good too! MK didn't have such a huge belly then, though! :think

Huge belly? I thought it was a six-pack. 💪💪

Oh well, growing old isn't for wimps. MK said it himself. Time is a jetplane, it moves too fast.
We're all on the same journey.
I'm happy that he is still touring, even if that means "last big tour" nowadays.
I'm sure there will be dates at the RAH in the future.
-
Hey Keith (Guy's nickname), they are saying I'm old and past it - I'll show 'em!!! :lol

I thank God that I will be at two concerts. Maybe more ... Mark Knopfler gave me so much and I thank him for that.

Yes, ok. To a certain exent it depends on your way of life. But your genes have a strong impact, too.

I’m sad to hear MK is retiring from big tours but it’s understandable with his advancing age. iNotwithstanding this I still feel blessed that I have seen MK, NHB and DS in concert many times over the past 25 years and that we have YouTube videos to keep us interested when we need our fix. I’m also lucky like many of us here to have the money to see MK in London and Prague in the current tour. MK probably does still have back injuries and aches and pains, it’s part of getting old. I’m sure it’s getting harder for him to play like the early alchemy and BIA years. Many of his songs will be hard to play if you have arthritis and I’m sure MK is trying his best but like any professional it’s hard to carry on like this forever. We should thank our lucky stars that a guitarist has a longer shelf life than a boxer or footballer! I wish MK a long life and hope he will still able to share his amazing talent with us for more years to come even if we only get less concerts. I personally would love an new album of extended solos from the DS/MK old catalogue of songs. As kitty says his “twiddly bits” but on steroids! I think this would be a big seller!!
-
Why do you all say MK has arthritis? Keith Richards’ hands are completely messed up now and he still plays. Paul Simon retired at 77. Springsteen is also 70 this year... I think MK is completely out of physical shape and perhaps he is indeed suffering from some chronic disease, but his touring retirement has nothing to do with age.

That's the reason he gives, "I'm an old man, this is a goodbye"

I think that he finds touring pretty hard (and it is). In addition, I had a feeling that he has worked quite much before the tour to get the songs to this level.
-

Yes, but he gives this reason with a purpose which is to say it’s his last tour. He could have announced that before the start of the tour to sell tickets faster, but preferred not to hype it up. Nevertheless, it’s his choice (which can be derived from many different factors) but age is just an made up excuse. In a way it’s even stranger considering that the live rig has been completely redesigned, the band has been augmented and he’s playing stuff which he threw to the bin before (Once upon a time in the west? Why? Money for Nothing? Why?).

Age a made up excuse? How would you know? Are you Mark Knopfler? His playing gets lesser and worse and he knows it so he adds a brass section to the band plus Danny as his contribution and cooperation with Ian worked out fine. He does that to justify the concert as he always had a very good feeling for delivering good value for the ticket prices. You can be cynical and say the new members are there to cover his weakness in playing if you are inclined to do so. I am not. I thank him for being this kind of guy with a good working mentality. More band members means bigger stage. Time brings new development on the technical side. He always was up to date with his stage sound and the last tour was four years ago.
The choice of songs is clearly decided by the fact that it IS a farewell tour, no doubt for me. There is a melancholic note to most of the chosen songs and it works out pretty well, it's touching and believable.
He cannot deliver a proper Sultans anymore so just changed it with another classic from the DS bands beginning that he IS capable to play plus which can feature the new band as good as possible. It's really that easy.
Money for Nothing fits perfectly into this set idea as a nod to the rocking days. Plus it gives Guy a thank you to put the spot on him singing and playing that famous synth pattern. Silvertown Blues fits as a goodbye song lyrically as it closes a circle from those times back then and is a track from his most famous solo album STP. All pretty obvious and clear to me. Mark is not one of those who will tell us it's the last time out there for five times like other artists do.

It’s more plausible that age is an excuse (why would he say that his back hurts or that he has lupus or whatever) than your claim that a brass section serves the purpose of covering up his inability.
In fact, you described the reason why he disbanded DS in the 90s: unable to fulfill god-like expectations.

Oh, another thing: Tunnel of Love is not about the Spanish City theme park, it’s about his life choices. A life of circus, ghost trains and one arm bandits and torture tattoos that seems so pretty to him, like the Spanish City when they were kids. Who’s they? And yet, a very sinister song about a path of entertainment with loss of love, which is also the reason why it opens the first album without his brother, keeps popping up as a request.
Nevertheless, he can’t really please the fans. He wants to be a piper until the end and you want him to solid rock, pointing one finger at his decrease in speed playing while getting three other fingers pointing back at you. He gave up speed playing a long time ago. But listen to his vibrato.
He’s just sick and tired of the circus that never pleases. This is the end of Mark Knopfler the performer. Wait for the novel or for whatever new stuff he is getting into.

I think LE pretty much nailed it. Mark is out there on this tour doing his very best at his age for us, and be in no doubt this is a farewell tour. Most of all though, in typical fashion it is being conducted with dignity and not sold out on the basis of it being a farewell greatest hits tour.
Ironically the brass section brings new life into old songs and he should've got it sooner! We'd never have had Once Upon a Time back in the set without the trumpet.

yes agree with this , I was at Barcelona and was abit sad when I saw mark walk on stage and how hes aged and slowed down , but loved new arrangements , why aye man i really liked!! , sailing to philadphia , matchstick man, silvertown blues, nice too here Bonaparte again , and bacon roll sounded great with solo at end. it was like Christmas and you didn't know where the setlist was going next, rudy pensa and Monteleone were in the audience too

Listen to the album version. The intro is already a trumpet, but it’s played with a guitar. It took him a long time to realize he could send the guitar to the background it deserves.

Yes indeed I agree with what's been said too. Thankyou Mr Crimmer for your input especially with regards Rudy and John being in the audience...

I've enjoyed listening to all that I've heard so far, especially the new arrangements with the brass section. A few of my favourites are Matchstick Man, My Bacon Roll, Heart Full of Holes and, of course, Silvertown Blues. MFN and Once Upon A Time sounded great after all these years too. Can't wait for Leeds and Newcastle now and meeting amiters.
I'm glad that MK didn't announce this as a farewell tour like some rock stars do, but he's done it in his own understated way. I wish him well for the rest of the tour. :)

Totally agree...heart full of holes is personally really exceptional....

I still think Sultans will turn up somewhere along the way, it's his signature song.
-
I think you are missing the point. I don’t see this as a farewell tour, I see it as “I may be too old to tour again, we’ll see. In the meantime, I bid you farewell ‘til the next time I’m in town”.
He did a musical. May be he’ll write a book.

Could be but i would not put all my money on that.
Look at the DS songs he’s playing. 6 and if he plays Going Home 7.
Those are all well known songs for everybody. For sure if he’s playing Sultans another DS song will be dropped. Perhaps TR :think but i do not see it happen anytime soon.....

He will carry on recording, maybe more musical type work. I would think 'one off' shows maybe even a mini tour of the UK and perhaps guesting with other people will be the order of the day. But as for a full on tour - nope....
But anyway enough of what may happen in the future, let's get on and enjoy the present with MK playing LIVE!!!
-
Great setlist I think, but they have to keep WAM as opener and not NDT. I saw a comment at Dr Fle asking them to keep the opener from Barcelona
The answer to the whole post was "yes ok", hopefully for that wish...
Anyway i have been over-excited a long time now and it does not decrease by the days :)

Some kind of mini tour through Europe like 10 concerts and about 10 in the UK is still possible next time i think....
-
Moving on, let's all enjoy MK playing LIVE now
...

Quite honestly, what I think is that playing in Barcelona or playing in Newcastle is the same thing: get on a plane, do the show. It’s not like going to LA or India. Tours are full productions, carrying everything around and all. Nothing would detract from doing a weekend European tours with local setup rider. Unless he doesn’t want to.

I was so busy with my own stuff recently that I – for the first time in my life – missed the opening of a MK tour. :-[
So I urgently had to catch up and watched whatever I could find on YouTube.
My impression: Yes, Mark is a slow-moving old man now, and yes he no longer has hair, but a belly instead. So far, so natural. I couldn't say that his playing had deteriorated much since the last tour, though. I'm thrilled to see some really surprising setlist additions, notably Once Upon a Time in the West. And I think the band does the songs justice. There's one or two little things I could complain about, but I'll save those for later. At the moment, I'm more in the mood for celebrating. If this should turn out to be his last tour (which I doubt, maybe just the last of this size), I'll be sad, but extremely thankful. No other artist has moved me the way Mark did throughout the years, and I'm confident that he'll continue to do so for quite some time - if not on stage, then from his studio. He simply is an awesome man. Period.

Personally, I 'found' MKs music aged just 10 (1985) and although I listen to other artists/guitarists
there will only ever be one who I regard the highest and that is MK...I stand by my slogan...
Mark Knopfler - 'not just a hobby but a way of life'

For me MK was/is a total journey. I discovered so much music through him. Making movies to rb and Springsteen, LH and Cal Lead me to folk, MK with infidels to Dylan, Land of dreams to Randy Newman, Gaucho Steely Dan, MFN to sting, Joan Armatrading, throw in Van Morrison, Squeeze, Jeff Healy (Wow nearly forgot that I got turned on to him through MK!), Clapton (From seeing him at Mandela Day concert with DS, later on the now sadly retired Kate Walsh, Chet of course, Loads of country music, Buddy Guy, and the most recent one Tommy Emmanuelle, god there's too many to mention. Whatever the future holds for Mark in music I owe him a huge thankyou for introducing me to all of the above and probably many more I've missed off the list....
-
Only a few gigs left before the European leg of this tour is over :'(
Mark and Co will then travel to America and then… what's next?
I don't think (or maybe I can't accept) that he will retire after this tour, I mean retire from big tours. Not because his on-stage speech has changed but I can't see him stop, at least till he can do well live, and he does well. He has a great supporting band so if he wants to continue and if health is not an issue, I see him doing it for a few more years.
Time will tell but fingers crossed.
That said, I am a bit sad that he's saying goodbye to Europe. Hopefully we have a few touring weeks ahead.

No tours for next five years? Fine! An album a year instead will suffice! Mind you, that's a lot of tea and gin!!

100% agree! :clap
Again as as my slogan below reads "Mark Knopfler - Not just a hobby but a way of life" I can fully appreciate all you have said. MK has opened a whole Kaleidoscope of various artists who I now listen to and perhaps had I not have followed 'the master' might well have not!
I agree and in fact we all owe MK a huge thanks (I was lucky enough to tell him so to his face) for all he has done and all he is going to do....... :wave
Can't help feeling that there will be more of MK Live - just not on such a huge scale......
-
I agree with this: MK Live - just not on such a huge scale......
I also think it is a great opportunity for us fans to get more albums with a shorter time between releases, maybe more double albums. I always remember his comment in the Henrik Hansen short film, "There are so many song that I'll never get around to recording" this would increase the chances of more songs being recorded.
-
May be a relief for him as well, that he doesn't have to follow up an album with the obligatory support tour.
I know I'm in a minority, but I'm glad I didn't go to see him this time. I know clips don't do it justice, but to me he has increasingly become a recording artist more than a live performer. Yes, I'd love to have heard Once Upon a Time live, but most of the other tunes I've heard before. Just because they are jazzed up / brassed up isn't enough for me.
-
as for MK you are right.
But the Band is just outstanding as well.
I go out for 2 points, See my old idol and enjoy the best live music as possible.
Both we delivered. OK Mark is not the Guitarist anymore. Since 2011 it went down enormously . But is is still my Idol.
When you don't know the set it was a really pleasent surprise to hear all the tracks.
It could be more boring the more shows you attend. Maybe. Depends...
I really liked WAM, Sailing was superb, MFN was coo to be back.
OK-the middle part was a bit slow with all those non-highlight songs - but overall you could see only smiling faces and satisfied People.

Agree with this. I think for any fan it was important to see him this time around more than anything.

He'll be around still. And I think potential future MK shows could be more interesting because they're likely to be on a smaller scale and different. I really feel he has exhausted the current format.
