I thought the same... This looks written for Alan, Chris, Phil etc etc
Now, take a read at "OKlahoma Ponnies"...
Writting songs it´s his way yo express himself...
Now... take "Let´s See You" and read the lyrics, thinking in all the arguments he had with Ed Bicknell during the recordings and production days of the "STP" record, before they broke their relationship, and you will see that MK is talking about it along the song... and, yes, Ed had a gold arm chair ;D
In Guy´s forum: "Hello, Doc, Is this song what it seems? If the answer is yes, Mark got nuts!!!"
He answers: "I couldn't possibly comment" ;D ;D ;D ;D
As far as I know there are no rights attached to playing songs from other artists. There are rights attached to the writing, the publishing, and the playback of disks. Now if whoever wants to play Sultans in front of whatever crowd, I think nobody can stop them...Writting songs it´s his way yo express himself...

Yes Jbaent but if he didn't approve the Straits's shows why didn't he tell them directly when they were making them? I thought that he still owned the songs they sang or are they now belonging to the Dire Straits period. Anyway it's not going to be easy for the Straits to digest this song!!

Every line like a dagger through the heart. Ouch!
I'm a bit shocked to be honest. This will seriously offend.

I agree with you dmg but there's got to be a good reason for this song!!!! You don't start to go public like he does if the other part has not done something terribly wrong before or what do you think???

It's a statement. How long has that chapter been discussed in Guy's forum. The question what MK thinks of all the cover bands has been brought up so often. So many discussions. So much bad blood. You never heard him say anything about it. Now he has done what he does best - he has written a song about it.

Wouldn't mind the same :)Same... Please :)

Well said, LE. It's a statement.
please can someone post a link, so we all can hear bonus songs..
or please in my PM.
This song is great ! better than anything on the main album !
I am getting really tired of this 20th-century outdated thing called "extra tracks" if you buy this super-rare expensive box that can only be found in Zimbaboue.... TIRED. Give me whatever price tag you want and include every song there is to get in the package and that's it !
Musically, this one is VERY close to Junkie Doll. Almost like 'Junkie Doll: Part 2'.

what ? not really
I don't understand the title grammatically. About the "to" followed by nothing. . Please explain someone, for a simple mind...

Sounds like an old Cream song or something? Not sure which one.
And where does this leave John Illsley, does he get a free pass to go and play with all these guys?
As for JI, well, he is touring under his own name (no Straits in it)
The song reminds me of "what God wants, part iii" on roger waters 1992 "Amused to death": a real masterpiece, but quite harsh:" don't be afraid, it's only business... " after a snipset of echoes, shine on, and breathe, to mock Gimour-led pink Floyd...
As for JI, well, he is touring under his own name (no Straits in it) and is also promoting his own albums, so I guess this is less serious an offense. . and JI never claimed to have co-written TR as Alan did... John knows how to stay at the right place !
herlock I am gonna see David live in September :)
Me too :p
Nice ! where ?

I think that MK doesn.t include John Illsley in this song because he helped him by letting him record his own stuff at BG with Guy Fletcher but what about Chris White who seem to be a nice man? He was with JI at BG as well!! Do you think that MK feel the same for him?And where does this leave John Illsley, does he get a free pass to go and play with all these guys?
I think, Mark himself won't be able to answer your question even at gun point.
This is the conflict of loyalties or, so-called, divided loyalties, - one of the most challenging psychological problems, which has no unambiguous solution.
In a determinate sense it's something like a torture. :(
I always wondered if "Everybody Pays" was for his brother...
As for JI, well, he is touring under his own name (no Straits in it)
*cough* http://www.direstraitslegends.com
double cough :)
I always thought that MK was a real gentleman, this sort of things might be solved in private, not with a song. I don't like this attitude. Too rude in my opinion, sentences are quite direct and humiliatingOn top of that, this song is the only one that is quite rocking, with a great guitar solo.... but this is only a "bonus" song ! as if the message was: "Dire Straits was me, and only me. You see, I can still do it, if I want. But I can't be bothered anymore, so this will just be a bonus track."

Could almost have been called "F*** you, Alan".
Interesting. Looks like another Waters/Gilmour feud (altough these two and Mark are in the sa same elite league, which is not Alan's case, so it's all the more harsher: slapping people that are not your equals).
Mark must have been taking very badly the fact that Alan claimed that he co-wrote TR. It is true that Alan was quite arrogant on that one.
But was it worth it to slap him in the face ?
I don't think so.
Well, part of me does think so. After all, we've got a DS-grade song !
The thing with Mark is I can imagine him answering an interviewer asking about this song and him saying he wrote the whole thing while watching an Elvis impersonator in Portland.
Alan says he contributed a lot to the DS songs, and if you listen to everything from DS before and after Alan you will notice a big chance in musical terms. We also know that MK doesn´t want to share credits, and Guy had told many times that as long as MK write the song, whatever the musicians add is part of their job... that shows clearly that DS wasn´t more than MK´s band. I´m sure that Alan not only co-wrote TR (probably in musical terms only, the lyrics and main idea is 100% MK) but many of the DS arrangements during his time with the band, but, again, MK never wanted to share any credits, as he write the songs. So I don´t blame Alan for that, he is right telling he had a part on the compositions, but he didn´t assume his rol as a hired musso like Guy did/does. It´s not that Alan was arrogant, was naive, he should had assumed that his rol, even composing, adding music to MK´s song, was part of his work, getting no credit for it further than your payment.
For sure MK didn´t like Alan telling that, but this song is not only a slap in his face, it´s a "Your nobody, you never were, and you never will", totally unnecessary.
MK never wanted to share any credits
To me this is a nasty and disingenuous song,Is it really necessary to kick these guys in public.Musically good or not, just don't feel comfortable listening to it.
well I am not completely comfortable too
to avoid confusion it would help a lot to know officially who exactly it is referred to
I mean, it's now official ? Fine, explain what's behind it as it occurs for any other song

A few years ago, former member of Dire Straits, calling themselves the Straits, began touring, playing the old repertoire that Knopfler himself often avoids onstage. Thanks! But I'm more confused now...MK sounds very gentleman in the interview, so why this rudeness and anger in the lyrics if it was written about ALan Clark or other tribute bands. :oA few years ago, former member of Dire Straits, calling themselves the Straits, began touring, playing the old repertoire that Knopfler himself often avoids onstage. It's such a delicate subjectI think guys response on his forum confirms it, and now MKs poor souls comment.
I think there should be a precise explanation. Maybe even a short one but precise.

We tend to complain that MK is too bland and boring and now people are complaining that he goes too far!
Personally I love it, although I have always hated these tribute acts.
Yes this song is the best. It's an absolute gem and not difficult to be the best song of KTGC part 2.
Thanks to it I have given a second chance to the album, which is growing on me.
I love laughs... Basil, and especially long cool girl and skydiver.
But what shocks me even more than the harshness of the lyrics is the fact that this song is not part of the Mail album, only the deluxe edition... Mark's message: I can still do DS stuff, but I can't be bothered. This is only to slap Alan...

Not sure I can give it a second chance. I only keep Laugh and Jokes and Beryl.
It's a commercial suicide to put Terminal of Tribute To on the bonus CD.
There's nothing on that album and that song would have been a killer.

Nothing, nothing... A bit harsh Tunnel :) long cool girl is the new six blade knife, calms me down, love it.
But it's true that leaving out Terminal out the album is a bit like leaving Tunnel of Love out MM... !!!

This sounds a bit misleading to me. I think every musician will bring in his own parts automatically. Rock music is not composed like an opera - this is the transcription for your part, please play it - but starts with a rough idea of the song (chords, lyrics, melody) and the rest develops. Including everybody's name in the composer credits will cause nothing but problems with the publishing side of the business and does not make sense for this reason.
In the case of TR and Alan, we know that Mark and Alan worked together on the song, I think it is even mentioned in the Oldfield book. Possibly even complete parts or blocks - I can imagine that e.g. parts from the 'camera' section after 'three lanes moving slow' - might be based on Alan's input, but the 'song' (in the sense I described before) is Mark's composition alone.

Nothing maybe for you; for me it is the best solo record he has ever done, so much soul and personality, wonderful melodies, from folk (Laugh) to Hendrix (Hot Dog). For me it´s a gift.

Another one here to add to best album yet!! Such variety and such deep lyrics/music and MK guitar too! Something we have been missing. Mind you he seems to be enjoying it so long may it continue......
"Pick out a pretty one and toss your hair.", could this be about AC picking Terence Reis? He has lovely hair. Seems funny old AC with young Terence? That was exactly my thought.

Well, well I don't think that we're going to have an answer to this really good question because I don't think MK will ever give a clear explanation on why he wrote this song!!!
He always gives details to any song.
j
I don't know why he shouldn't in this case.
We just need a journalist to ask a question.
Ever heard any journalist asking about b-sides?
"Pick out a pretty one and toss your hair.", could this be about AC picking Terence Reis? He has lovely hair. Seems funny old AC with young Terence?
I think MK owes you a writing credit too with the "chip on both your shoulders" line. I seem to recall you saying that in one of your posts in reference to AC.
Quote"Pick out a pretty one and toss your hair.", could this be about AC picking Terence Reis? He has lovely hair. Seems funny old AC with young Terence?
I think it's more generally about certain rock star airs and graces some of these musicians seem to have (the "pretty one" is a girl in the audience and the musicians tosses his hair in a rock-cliché-way) and how silly it appears to behave this way, especially when you're older - and not a real star but a wannabee...
I really like this song, although I think the lyrics are a bit too offending. I mean, musicians have to eat, too. And I really believe that Alan Clark & Co. have fun playing these old songs. They pay tribute to the songs of MK and he gets the royalties. And every tribute band has a band name that refers to the original band or a certain song. There are still a lot of DS fans who don't really like the new stuff and are happy to go to a concert where you not only get SOS and SFA but a lot more (and sometimes with even better guitar work...).
I've been to Brit Floyd and Aussie Floyd concerts and they are marvellous. Nobody would expect them to be the real Pink Floyd - although you tend to if you close your eyes. David Gilmour even invited the latter to his birthday because he was so amazed. That's a far more relaxed and friendly way to deal with musicians who admire other songwriters.
If I was MK I'd be pretty pissed off with old mates claiming to be more than they are. This song for me puts AC in his place. If he's such a talent he shoud make his own music and if its good I will buy it.
Yes, message is clear: I can still do what I used to do if I want; I just don't want anymore. Except just once, to teach you a lesson...Well done Herlock. I did not dare to mention that when I wrote to Guy yesterday because I never saw their shows!! Hope he will answer your post.
This is what I dared to post on Guy's forum. We'll see the answers (or not...)
Hi Guy, Many thanks and congrats for another brilliant album ! Two direct questions regarding this awsome song (the best one IMHO) 1. Why is it a "bonus track" and not on the main album ? 2. Is the song about Alan Clark ? If no, may I suggest to make it clear to him, because there are many clues that will have him think he has been targeted... Thanks and cheers
I'm amazed you think somebody else plays Mark Knopfler's guitar parts better than Mark Knopfler!
It's ex members of the actual band who were happy to sit back and smile when they were touring the world, but after 20 years of no success on their own merits they turn up saying they wrote half the songs, they just forgot to mention it before, oh and also John Illsley isn't a good enough musician to play his own parts. Disgraceful.
I had the same feeling, but thought i was wrong, because the whole track is DS-like. Sound of the guitar.I think it sounds a bit similar to "Let It Grow" (as someone already mentioned here). I can hardly hear any similarities to DS recordings. The guitar sound is different (although it is a Strat), a lot more acoustic guitar strumming, fairly unusual harmonies.
Regarding John, I think he shows a lot of talent on his new cd, I would not put it that harsh dusty; There is a lot of own style in it, that I quite like. That´s good. But yes, also for the JI concerts, I really do not get it why he plays usually more than half of the set DS songs. He should play his (good) own songs; 2-3 ds songs as addition would be ok, but more than half of the set I don´t get it. But that´s just my view.
I didn't say anything about John's solo music? Was just wondering what MK thinks about him being involved in various DS tribute incarnations.
QuoteI'm amazed you think somebody else plays Mark Knopfler's guitar parts better than Mark Knopfler!
If you listen to the various tribute bands out there - some guitar players are truely amazing. And although I find it rather pointless and bland to reproduce another player's solo note for note some of them really nail it. Not better than MK in #85-'92 but (technically) better than MK from 2008 onwards. And I have to admit that some live recordings of MK from the last years really make me sad. I'd rather wish he would stop playing SOS or TR instead of butchering them.
Nobobdy can play MK like MK, that's true; but MK plays at a slower pace than MK used to... :)QuoteI'm amazed you think somebody else plays Mark Knopfler's guitar parts better than Mark Knopfler!

Well we must agree to disagree, for me nobody can play MK like MK. And I personally haven't noticed any problem with his playing in recent years.

ok; well John is not involved in so many, just in one (DS legends) for some rare occasions which he also uses to promote his own stuff. Anyway, I looked at the last set lists, and latest he played from 20 songs 13 DS songs. It´s up to him but I'd prefer to hear much more of his own stuff. (railway tracks I find really good, for instance)
I can see it both ways. If you went to see John Illsley of Dire Straits and he didnt play any Dire Straits songs I would be pissed off.
Anyway, I don't grudge any of these guys making a living. The thing I hate is Alan's attitude.

Saw John 2 weeks ago. He did play Railway Tracks.
About John, they are more than friends, I think it is not the same thing, when at the beginning you shared 120 bucks and you had nothing but just enough to eat and you still playing and enjoying it, you have the right to play those songs and be proud of it.
John rule! I mean he looks good promoting his new album and singing DS tunes. AC looks ridiculous with his foremost keyboard rack on stage.

Yes of course, thats out of question. My point was that the balance is just not my preference as I would prefer more of his own songs instead. But I fully agree, John is a totally different thing than the straits or other tribute bands.

John is highly respected for that among MK fans and has earned his little place under the sunshine. Time for him to shine a little bit. Yes I also would have preferred him to play more of his own songs... But at least he made some songs of his own !
Alan's case could have been similar. After all he joined DS as a full member
In 1980, not so long after it all started, and he probably brought many things and ideas. His keyboards skills are quite outstanding (see TOL on Alchemy/Wembley !). His major faults are not that much "The straits" per say, but all these interviews saying that he co-wrote TR and that MK was not that a big part of DS. Had he be contented with playing some old songs with a few ex-members that probably Mark would have smiled and not cared much. But all this tralala about it as if it was a major event, a reformation of DS... This is like Icarus: if you go to close to the sun, don't be surprised to be burnt. My 2 cents.
So was On Every Street!Rrrrahhhh don't remind me of that ! :(
Aargh I should have known: never ask two questions in one to Guy, he will just answer the easy one... He completely ignored my question about Alan Clark !!! :(
Don't understand Mark: the song is only a bonus one, but he wants to play live (that is, slap Alan face live every night or so). Contradictory to me... But this one is going to be awesome live !!

He completely ignored my question about Alan Clark !!! :(Some things are better left unanswered. They have even more powerful meaning that way. I can imagine it must be quite uncomfortable for Guy to answer this one. Since the message is clear why bother asking.
Don't understand Mark: the song is only a bonus one, but he wants to play live (that is, slap Alan face live every night or so). Contradictory to me... But this one is going to be awesome live !!
I like your Icarus comparison, herlock.

Sincerely I'd really like an answer.
I mean, even if AC did really behave badly or even very badly, I still feel somewhat unhappy about MK targeting him in a song, especially in an excellent song which I love musically (my fav of the album) .
So I'd really like to know who is the target officially.
AC is never mentioned in the Song, so it should not be a problem at all. MK didn't offend anyone personally, neither anyone of his ex band mates nor the Straits. This is all well done, fair and perfectly ok. There is no real damage made. Whereas the precise information that you demand, more out of the feeling of curiousity could cause the real damage.

I think it sounds a bit similar to "Let It Grow" (as someone already mentioned here). I can hardly hear any similarities to DS recordings. The guitar sound is different (although it is a Strat), a lot more acoustic guitar strumming, fairly unusual harmonies.
So, now Alan Clark was humiliated completely for the eternity in the sacred place of the genuine music of MK. If the song would be played life also in front the audience & world would get worse . I'm very disappointed of MK doing it this way especially when all is finished now and The Straits splitted up. Sound like revenge for me. Would be better if he would say it in an interview, on his site, or just calling him "listen ash***, do not mess with my music". It all be OK.
It's clear now these two have old scores to settle down.
The very same for me after re listening to the song!!!!!!!! MK is a genius and a very intelligent Man, I never doubt he is!! :wave :thumbsupAC is never mentioned in the Song, so it should not be a problem at all. Agree! It would be better if we stop digging deep inside and just enjoy the music. Or talk about the next song or even better for the next MK album. ;D ;D ;D
If there is a message to somebody in this lyrics I'm sure it has already reached him.
13 pages are enough for this song, the others have 5-6 and it's not fair

If the song is played live, 99% of the people in the audience will have no idea what it's about, just like most of MK's songs.
Just two notes from me.
When I first listened to this Song, i hold the booklet in my hands. I saw a big painted Mark with it's typical headband. For me it was a big hint of what this song is all about.
Guy told in his forum that this song is the best for him.
I wonder why: because of the typical Dire Straits sound or
because of the meaning of this text?
Perhaps both?
Nevertheless this Song is great and the melody reminds me of the past.
The intro is a bit spooky...brings to mind ghosts and ghools or perhaps Most Haunted, the theme tune of which AC composed.
Naughty, naughty
Is it the lyrics in general that makes you think its about AC or is it a specific line that discovers it ?
As I see it the inspiration can also come from another member in a band he has been in touch with.

I'm not sure "The Straits thing" is really finished. With his next band attempt AC will most certainly try again to get attention by using DS material heavily.
This is a very exciting TV serial what we are following with this song!! MK verses AC what's going to happen in next episode?? Lol...
After Alias Lost Fringe Person of Interest Star Trek and Star Wars, JJ Abrams will probably work on this one :D

Yes indeed Pensaboy!!! Would be a very good idea!!! :thumbsup :clap
I have a very interesting vid that you all have seen before from Dortmund in 1980!!! Who was the Boss there?? MK or AC??!!!!

From AC on his website: "I may also be involved in a very exciting Dire Straits related project later this year; watch this space."

What can one say about that in the terminal of tribute to...
I think the song is about AC because of his interviews and not because people cover DS music. It's pretending to be DS what's wrong.
Well, then I am wondering why other so called DS ex members (which Phil is not) have no bad feeling about joining with AC in these kind of things (some of the straits obviously got a bad feeling that's why they split). It is all incredibly strange and I would have not believed that they consider to go on after Mark has clearly stated now what he thinks of it. Also Guy seems very direct now in his answers in this respect (which he wasn't always as we know). :think
Agree with you Jbaent, but with respect to what Phil told me I avoid the word reunion, because when I used this word to him he really was strongly insisting that it was NOT. So some ex-members (not all, not mentioning main or longtime DS-members) of DS will get together and play music we love. And everyone can say what he wants but at least a couple of them are very good musicians. And not every good musician also has the talent to write good songs themselves. But I love to hear good musicians, also when they only cover other music. Next saturday a very good local band will play only covers, not from one band, but from the 70's to 90's. They are good musicians, they are passionful in playing, so it will be a great night.Completely agree with you Ingrid - with all your posts here. You put it the best in words for me... :clap
Trying to recall the past...Being a big fan ( and friend) of Chris White I have been many times in Italy to many tribute events. For most of them I know for sure they were supported by Mark himself - Pensa Day even was suggested to organize in Italy by Mark during 2002 Charity gigs in London. Other such event was a charity for Amnesty International in 2007 in Italy again - they were 3 DS tribute bands there, Chris White, Terry Kilburn, Paolo Bonfanti, a great Italian blues player, and some other guests. Mark also sent some stuff and guitars for the charity.
I'm amazed by the fans and all tribute bands in Italy - such a warm and loving atmosphere, smiles and happy faces, all respect and love for MK and his music.
I suppose it's the same in Spain, Germany and other countries. I can not imagine Terminal Tribute To is about them.
I also think, despite that most of you will disagree, because you have information from Guy, but not from Mark himself...I think that what most annoyed Mark to write this song was not the name of The Straits, but mostly Alan in his interviews, pretending to be DS ( thank you, Ingrid, for this sentence) or collaborating upon Telegraph Road. I'm so sorry about Alan that he couldn't rethink the past. He is really a wonderful musician.
One more thing. I have been on many concerts of The Straits - met many new fans and friends and spoke to many people but never, really never met people who were misleaded they will watch Dire Straits, which was the biggest concern of the fans here, in the forum.
I was shocked by the lyrics from the start, but now I may say Mark probably just wrote the song to let everything go or trying to release the past...Who knows?
Somebody said here that everything was about money.
Well, The Straits really filled but a very small venues and their tickets were cheaper 3-4 times compare to MK, so I don't think they earned that much and also Italian tribute bands.
Marijo58, 60000 people were during BIA or OES of DS, and never happened since 1992.

And Slavi by the way , I noticed that you said that you know Chris White and that he's One of your friends, please do tell him if you have contact with him sometimes in the future that I simply admire his wonderful work on Romeo and Juliett and on Private Investigations!! I wish him the very best in the future and that I was sorry to read about his loss of a dear friend in cancer!!He seems very deeply sad about this. If he has an email contact for Fans I can maybe leave my message myself??? Thanks.
Thanks Shangri la great revue of that wonderful song. By the way where is the link to the entire Hansen Movie. i did not find it ? Is it on AMIT TV?

It doesn't matter to much to whom he's referring to exactly, I think ("tossing your hear" can't be about Alan, that's for sure ;)). If it is a slap in the face – and yes, it is! - then it's a slap in the face of the whole concept of tribute bands and the sad sort of people who are ready to participate in it for money. I always thought tribute acts were a silly thing (if you have any musical talent, then come on, us it to create something new), and they're particularly ridiculous when done by people who were part of the real thing, and could easily make a living as studio musicians, or whatever. It's just a very, very, very ... uncool thing to do. So as far as I'm concerned, that slap is well deserved, by whoever it may concern.
How anyone - Alan, Phil or others - can seriously consider repeating their "tribute" tours after hearing this song is beyond me. I can hardly believe it will happen. I mean, HOW embarassing would that be? If it really happens, I'll go to one of the shows and hold up a sign asking for "Terminal of Tribute to"
As you know I disagree with that something is wrong with tributebands. Not everyone who is an excellent musician can write songs (and earn money with it).
There's a lot of demand for tributebands. It's nice to hear the songs played again by excellent musicians. It's nice our own forummembers give it a try too, and I must say sometimes really good!
Even composer's name are written first before any musician's name.

Thats true, I know that as long time visitor of the Viennese opera and famous Musikverein; by the way that´s exactly what has not happened with the straits, MK as composer of all songs has even not been mentioned

You are NOT correct ! Have you ever been in their concert? Terence Reis in every gig had a short speech about Mark Knopfler writing all these amazing songs!
As far as I know there are no rights attached to playing songs from other artists. There are rights attached to the writing, the publishing, and the playback of disks. Now if whoever wants to play Sultans in front of whatever crowd, I think nobody can stop them...
The Hansen movie is that around 6 minute short thing, the 23 minute long British Grove Interview is not from Hansen. It seems there was a little confusion about it.

I don't think you are correct about the rights for performing a song. Live performances do result in royalty fees.

It's easy for Guy to be smug about this kind of thing when he has a steady gig flying with MK in a private jet and recording in the best studio in the world.
But how does Alan Clark make a living? He doesn't get songwriter's royalties from DS, maybe minimal producer's royalties from sales of OES?
So what does he do, drive a van? Nothing wrong with that, but a long way from Wembley.
So I don't grudge him making some cash out of this, I'm just pissed off that he's been such a dick about it.

:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup
just an reminder: Mark has always tell thanks at his musicians like Jim or Richard and I never heard any people in his band 'i must to have some credits on a song' like alan in TR.........no doubt wrong words tell about Mark, that is a Real Gentilmen in our times, I think Sting in a simply example in Money...so I like so much this song.....I like the solos.....Mark is Mark :clap :clap :clap
Bye
Back to thread, so it is actually a 'Sig' strat that is used in this track and not a Les Paul as so many thought!!
If those tribute acts have a decent sense of humour (which I seriously doubt they have) they must have already learned the 'Terminal of Tribute' song to play it first on their concerts. Or, maaaaaaaaybe, the whole setlist with just one song, like Mark did with Rudiger. Remember that? ;D

Indeed, I was wondering which effects he uses to make the strat sound like Hendrix: I assume it is the hot cake he used on last tour :)

So well said.
I only know about AC that he plays keyboards. Guy also can produce, mix ..... fix bikes etc.
So if AC doesn't have those skills I totally can imagine MK's decision. And I agree, you also need chemistry to work together for such a long time.
:-\ :-[ ::) Finished the TOTT video. Now to catch some ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ'ss :-X
You should have made a video for Wherever i Go. You can win 4000 dollars! ;D:wave Hi Dutchessy. Yes I saw that on MK.com? I was already almost finished my take on it when this was announced. I use copyrighted material so even if I was interested in the money thing I wouldn't be eligible to enter it.
where i can watch this video?Check your PM ;)
tnks
Would love to see the video too!
:think Please watch is you are interested ((most people I know in my age group (60+) hate music videos, but I see them as a means of introducing Mark & Guy’s masterpiece to all the younger generations)), and please don’t publish them anywhere. If they ever are allowed to be published, we want it to be sort of like an advertisement for our lovely little forum!! :think
Well, well I don't think that we're going to have an answer to this really good question because I don't think MK will ever give a clear explanation on why he wrote this song!!!
He always gives details to any song.
I don't know why he shouldn't in this case.
We just need a journalist to ask a question.
Looks like that the chance for a DS gig for charity is more unprobable than ever. If it happened then with MK,JI,Pick and GF.but a dream would be the original 4 peace band with david.

:wave Maybe not. This bloke, who has been the inspiration for our little forum, has more than just unique guitar, vocal and writing styles. He has humility & humanity levels at a much higher dosage than most other inhabitants of this globe that we all cling to, so never say never. ;)

He wasn't anything like a grumpy old man in that video - quite the opposite, in fact! It was a beautiful little film. If MK wants to move away from DS, that's his choice and, personally, I'm enjoying his solo albums much more than the DS ones. Tracker is the icing on the cake! :)
We think you'll like it; no, we think you'll love it. Watch this space.
Did anyone else besides me catch the innuendo behind Mark referring in the first line to "cabaret"? "Les Boys do cabaret, les boys are glad to be gay".
I think MK is taking a shot right there by referring to them as fags.

I don´t think so. Mark has many times said that he can play old songs if they are meaningful for him but he don´t want these songs to became cabaret. So I think that this is it.
HolaKnopfler wrote:

OK, but what about MFN? True, that song was banned in Canada for a while, but most of the world didn't think twice about the "littler faggot" line.
Also, for the first time, I thought of another take on MFN. Mark always says he wrote down the song in an electronics store window front in NYC. But is it possible that the line "you get your money for nothing, your chicks for free" refers to his bandmates? Saying that they are just along with Mark for the ride?

Hi Guy, Marco Caviglia is declaring almost on daily basis on the Mark Knopfler Italian Forum that the Dire Straits Legends are the only tribute band in the world that is authorized by Mark Knopfler. This is a bit hard to believe and is annoying the fans. Caviglia has written also that Terminal Of Tribute To can apply to every tribute band in the world EXCEPT for the Dire Straits Legends because they are officially authorized by Mark and they have his permission to do what they are doing. In one question: is it true that Dire Straits Legends are authorized by Mark Knopfler ?
GF: Absolutely NOT. There are NO bands 'authorised' by Mark. TOTT speaks for itself. MC is clearly delusional.

There are so many hints in the lyrics of this song that I am sure you are all right what it is about. Many of his songs can have many directions dependig on the listener, but this one is clear. Yes it is rude. But for once he is "angry" and kicks back in a both lyrically and musically fashion that hits his target spot on.+1
Also the intro that has similarities to an AC composion as the one "The Visitor" hints at.
So many good comments and also info in this thread (eg possible reference to DK in Everybody Pays that I did not know of).
TOTT is the best song on the album. Regardless of AC or anyone else. Its a hit :D
Same here even if I find Mk's words very hard towards AC which made me feel a bit bad when I heard the song the very first time, I really think that it's a masterpiece on Tracker and I can only imagine that AC deserved that because MK would perhaps never have released it on a CD if he wasn't the first offended in this matter!! I also want to believe that MK is a Man with principles!! But maybe I'm wrong about him???!!!!!!!

Don't know the facts behind this but if it's true MK was behaving like a dick.
Imagine you worked in a dentist and a millionaire rock star walked in and paid in coins. You would say "what a dick".
To be fair, MK often seemed like a dick in the DS days, another reason why going solo was a good thing.
Is there someone who could explain why some Italian fans go on like "Bieber-fans" (on the GF forum) about the supposed difference in tribute bands?
And why all that rage? Feels like some Italians react like they are five years old and have been candy robbed because of TOTT.
What's all the fuzz about?

Actually this song has nothing to do with DS Legends nor Marco Caviglia...
It's about Alan Clark and The Straits.
So I don't get what´s wrong with the Italian forum.

What's all the fuzz about?
Because:
a) DS Legends are based in Italy
b) Marco Caviglia is not considered a nice person by everybody
c) You are talking about a couple of angry guys, banned from the italian DS/MK forum ( leaded by Marco Caviglia), for their "specific" opinion about TOTT
Italians have many other different things to care of, trust me.

Agree Jbaent, it's about Alan Clark and the Straits. Italians can overreact sometimes. Some years ago I remember we talked about some italian fans waiting all night in the hotellobby where MK and band were sleeping, just to try to catch them in the morning. Doesn't look very grown up behaviour, neither is it respecting the privacy of the band!
I agree that it is more about the Straits than DS legends; but anyhow, Guy clearly stated that it is about tribute bands in general, so I don´t see why this should have nothing to do with DS legends...? My interpretation is that MK doesn't like tribute bands in general (the 'poor souls' statement), but the Straits and AC´s behaviour were the main impetus for writing the song.

No It's not about tribute bands in general. That's the interview:
"A few years ago, former member of Dire Straits, calling themselves the Straits, began touring, playing the old repertoire that Knopfler himself often avoids onstage. "Poor souls," Knopfler says of that band, before softening his tone. "I don't know — it's not for me."
Alessandro
Alessandro, Guy have stated quite often that is about tribute bands in general ("I don't see what is so confusing. They are both tribute bands." from April 6). I agree that it is mainly about the Straits, maybe also the 'poor souls' statement. But, sorry, what you think MK thinks of DS Legends...? Sure not 'happy souls' ;)

I understand we could have different opinion.
I think that these two bands (and only these two bands) behave very different compared with tribute bands "in general".

Yes, even it was Alan Clark statements when being interviewd about The Straits what made MK feel upset with it. MK doesn´t mind about the DS Legends, if he did, John Illsley, who is still MK's best friend wouldnt had played with them.
MK is Ok with all the tribute bands, but he doesn´t aprove any of them, as it´s not needed, as long as they pay the fees (and they do) it is ok and legal.

"No original members".
Not according to this article about Chris White!! LOL.

There were only four original members and Chris White was not one of them!
At least, when Alan was involved in The Straits, his site said that Chris was "formerly DS sax player", nothing about an original member ;D
Think it's more the fact that it say's he was an original member - 'member' being the word I reckon!!
I seriously don't know why CW cannot move on perhaps with his own material or perhaps he hasn't got any??!!
It takes time to read the whole thread... lol :smackCheck your PM - Long Cool Girl (ending 3), and Silver Eagle also included!
The Dire Straits Legends have officially changed their name
into 'Celebrating the music of Dire Straits'
I guess this song might have something to do with it.
They will play a couple of shows in Italy at the end of June

Still waiting patiently any tribute act to play this song.
I kind of feel stupid for asking, but I just can't make out what exactly is being sung at the end of the song (in the outro part). Does anyone know that?
Just listened to this for the first time in ages.
Holy shit, it's absolutely brutal. MK must have been so pissed off.
I always regret that during the interviews, when the album is released, none of the journalists does tries, does not dare to ask, for example, about this song. What the author had in mind.
