SOS 1978 dutch single version
« on: October 24, 2016, 10:56:33 PM »
Today on the dutch radio 2 they played the 1978 single version of Sultans of Swing. The dj said we were the first country were it became a hit and after that they put it out again but than the version everybody knows. The 1978 single version for the dutch is different from the one we all know. The dj said it is very hard to get this version. Did anyone knew this or ever heard this version?? Anyway check the song out at 1:15:15.. and indeed, a different one, i've never heard it before untill today.  :wave

There are two Sultans on single, the version that came in the record, and an alternate version recorded specifically for the single, trying to emulate the spirit of the demo.

That alternate version is in many different versions of the single in many different countries, very easy to find in ebay.
You might get lucky, now and then

Nice :)

(I do hope the end solo ("twiddly bits") aren't in this single... because if it is... and they did not air it... I would be disappointed.)

No twiddly bits in the end.. If you email radio 2 they will send the song to you  :wave :wave :wave

It's a radio edit (cutted the 3th couplet) from this one:

This one has the twiddly bits + the 3th couplet, rest is exactly the same as the Dutch radio version.

It's this one with missing 3th couplet, but with twiddly bits fading out.

So did the Dutch radio cut the twiddly bits off? When airing yesterday, or back in 78?

Thanks both!

I just can't stand it when they shorten songs on the radio. Especially when it they do it to MK/DS songs. :)

So a radio broadcast of the version with the missing third verse a chopped beginning and cut final solo? Not too sensational if you ask me. It's all on YouTube for ages.

There are three studio recordings of Sultans: the demo (July 1977), the album (February 1978) and the single (April 1978). The last one was released in many countries, e.g. the UK, Germany,... but I think in Holland it was rather the album version that was released as the single.
