Post by: allen on November 03, 2009, 07:01:25 AM
As the Afghanistan conflict enters its eighth year, The Royal British Legion is asking thousands of Britons to stand together and reflect on the price of freedom, which is still being paid, at Silence in the Square in Trafalgar Square, London.

I am on holiday and will almost certainly go. Have never been in central London on the morning of Remembrance Day, so it's about time I went.

I've emailed Sky News and BBC News 24 to ask if they will be providing coverage, will let you know what, if any, response I get.

Quite often something like this can just depend on events. If it's a "slow news day" then they may well have live coverage. If war breaks out with Russia, or one of the X Factor contestants break a nail or something equally "big" happens then they may not.

I had a look but the problem is, as I mentioned above, they provide "live" coverage of the news, so the schedules would probably just say "News".

They both gave full uninterupted coverage of Michael Jackson's funeral, not sure if remembering the war dead will be seen as being as "newsworthy" as that.  :-\

Good Morning Sunday  -  I have just finished listening to Mark's contribution on this programme and have recorded it so far.   It was a recorded interview from a few weeks ago and very short - nothing much we haven't heard before!   I am pretty irritated though, because Aled Jones played "Piper to the End" and then proceeded to talk all over the beautiful end solo!   Complete and utter disrespect for the artist and the song imo!   It will also be available to hear again on iPlayer.  (Mark's part is just after the 8am news).

BTW  I also looked at BBC Radio 2 playlist for the coming week and Mark's single doesn't appear on any of the playlists, A B or C!  The BBC, so far have given neither the album nor the single hardly any publicity as far as I can see!   Feeling quite disgruntled this morning!  :(

I just got home and missed the live play, and I've checked the website, http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_radio_two?sort=dateavailable  it's not updated yet.   Sigh, why more and more young and sexy guys are getting more and more attraction while the masters of those authentic music origins are having less and less publicity.

I have emailed BBC radio 2 today to see why "Remembrance Day" isn't on their playlists.  I don't really expect a reply from them either.  They have been playing the Athlete's "Black Swan Song" from their "A" list for two weeks now, and I think all of the singles donating to the Poppy Appeal should be given the same recognition.
Title: Re: Trafalgar Square, Nov 11th
Post by: dustyvalentino on November 09, 2009, 01:55:14 PM
A nice thought Val but I would assume that the fact that it's a charity single isn't  the main or even one of the factors they take into account when deciding on playlist status. First and foremost it has to be a catchy and therefore "radio friendly" song, and Remembrance Day isn't really that type of track. To be fair, they have shown in the past that when MK does release a catchy track they will back him, look at What It Is, Sailing to Philadelphia and This Is us, all of them got lots of play on Radio 2.

The BBC are scheduled to cover a memorial service from Westminster Abbey on their main channel (BBC1) between 10am and 11:30am. So I don't think there is much chance of any extensive coverage of "Silence in the Square" by the BBC. Maybe a few seconds in a news bulletin is the best there will be.
Title: Re: Trafalgar Square, Nov 11th
Post by: superval99 on November 09, 2009, 03:29:08 PM
Yes I know what you mean, dusty, about "Remembrance Day" but "Piper to the End" is a beautiful song and radio-friendly and they could have played it on Radio 2.  I think it is just as lovely, even more catchy imo, than "Black Swan Song" which has been on #1 playlist for some weeks!   I suppose Athlete are just more "cool" or "trendy" than MK for Radio 2 these days.  If it isn't given air-time, how are the general public going to hear it and donate to the charity?

I know they played "What it is", "STP", etc a lot, but "Border Reiver" didn't get much airplay.  :)
Title: Re: Trafalgar Square, Nov 11th
Post by: dustyvalentino on November 09, 2009, 03:58:00 PM
I think Piper to the End is an amazing song, but I have to be honest and say it even took a few listens to get under my skin. Also in Radio 2's defence, it's not being promoted as a single anyway.

I can't say I'm surprised that Border Reiver didn't get much airplay, not really a lot of love out there for "fiddle-dee-diddle-dee" music I think. To be fair, I don't think MK really cares much about this stuff, other than the fact that he wants as much money to go to the British Legion as possible.

It's disappointing that the details regarding this performance have been so sketchy.  All we want is to see and hear the performance and somehow we don't even know what channel to put on and, if it wasn't for Guy's forum, the time either.  Even Guy wasn't sure of the time!  One would think this sort of info would be published on the official site/news site because it's bound to be shown somewhere but we seem to be left in the dark.

There is a free service in France to upload and share files.
I don't know if there is geographical restriction but you can upload up to 1GB per file on it. Files are deleted after 30 days without download.

Check http://dl.free.fr

Edit : even better -> Web: 1Go but  FTP: 10Go

I would recommend using ftp transfert that allow to resume if transfert interrupted before completed.

I guess Mark feels sad because he can't improvise and play his guitar the way it should be played live to the song that really deserves a bit more dedication for the sake of all those fallen soldiers.I am sure it is someone else's fault once again.

Banjo99uk, Thank you for uploading for us, but it isn't working for me.  I have tried three times and only get a "still" picture for a few seconds.  Anyone else have this problem?   :-\

I just read on Markknopfler.com that Knoplerfan, who also went to Trafalgar Square, has made a film and taken pictures, which he will be uploading soon!   :)

Hi!

The download works for me, but the video freezes every 2-3 second when I play it in either Quicktime-player or VLC. Looks like a really great video, though  :)

Hi all! :)

Oddly Stephen Fry on Twitter says that they were doing soundchecks and MK was playing Brothers in Arms....?

How odd, do you think he just thought he was gonna play that or maybe he did not know the name of the song!!!

Fantastic, thank you! Stephen Fry is awesome. And I'm glad we got a first glimpse at MK with this vid. Although he looked strange with that turtleneck pullover  ;D

Stephen Fry is definitely a national institution....

Markie is having some problems with his singing, a little shaky, cold perhaps? But it gets a little better as he goes. It's a great tune anyway.

The British Legion said he was going to play BiA as well, so maybe he soundchecked it, but they ran out of time.

First of all, doesn't MK look cool?

Secondly, why do you need to tune a guitar for a playback performance?

Oh, and I hope they didn't risk his 58 LP for a playback.

I was obviously disappointed it was a playback.  Especially as Athlete seemed totally live and had a better sound that day but I cant be sure as I dont know there songs that well.

I'd say MK looks both cool and cold but...

It was unfortunate that it wasn't peformed live especially since Guy had mentioned they had already rehearsed it with the possibility of playing it at one of the promo gigs.  It may have been outwith their hands.

Mark's guitar was wired and his amp was miked so I assume that at least on stage his guitar palying was clearly audible

I find that highly unlikely to be honest, wouldn't make any sense at all to do that.

Best theory I can come up with is that the original plan was to play BiA live but RD playback, then BiA had to be dropped, despite being soundchecked.

Guy has confirmed on his forum that they only intended to perform Remembrance Day.  In that case I can confirm that Stephen Fry is a pompous prick! ;D

There is a very good reason that it's called twitter  ;D
I just can't work out whether the bigger twits are those who post or those who follow these inconsequential twitterings.

From Guy's Forum this morning regarding Stephen Fry:

Well the king tweet did indeed make a bit of an error..I quote 'Sound check in Teafalgar Sq: Mark Knopfler is singing "Brothers in Arms"...' Not particularly accurate on several fronts. Not sure if I'm going to continue twatting, I enjoy staying in touch via this forum a whole lot more

I don't know what the big deal is, so SF is not a huge MK fan and doesn't know all the songs? So what?

I have never understood "twitter" either, I think they should rename it "Stalker"

The fact is he built up hopes of MK fans that he was going to play both songs.  It was irresponsible of him.  If he was unsure of the song he didn't have to mention it's name at all.

Hi Val.

I nearly choked on my coffee  :o. Did Guy really write "twatting" at this time of the morning?
In these parts "twat" is not a very polite turn of phrase at all. Though slightly more polite than the closely related word used occasionally on this site to describe James Blunt  ;D

Fenderbender - They were Guy's exact words, I did a bit of copy and pasting!   ;D   I always thought THAT word was a bit on the rude side too.  Maybe not now!   ;)
