Yes. 5 years ago, we had 2005, and that's exactly 20 years after 1985...
While 20 years before 2010 it was 1990, and in that year, was there any aLCHEMY release that I am not aware of? ::)
Hmmm..
but I don't want to niggle about this, it is great to have it on DVD anyway - or even BluRay...

The CD was released in 1990 that's why it is the 20th anniversary. before that it was available as vinyl on first release.
So it seems it is the anniversary of the audio 'Alchemy' - therefore the video should be the bonus material.

Thanks, Simon! So I must have been very early buying it back in 1990 without knowing that it is a "new" cd release... I really thought I had the Double CD

Alchemy released on CD in 1990? Where did you get this information? I could be wrong but I think it has been released on CD few months after the vinyl (1984). Not later than 1985 anyway.
-
We didn't have CDs in force in the UK till the late 80's early 90's. Yes we had them in 1984 but they were very few and far between and the albums were actually produced for CD. It was only later that the record companies thought they could milk us with re-releasing ex-vinyl stuff on CD.
Alchemy was first released on Vinly - there was no alternative in the UK at the time - wasn't Brothers In Arms their first CD release?

Possibly but not in the UK. Maybe you have an import or you live n a place where CD was more prevalent than us over here?

The first CD plant in Europe was in Hanover (Germany): the first releases of all the mentioned CDs (Alchemy included) are "made in West Germany". The West Germany plants provided the European market and (with the Japan plants) the US market too.

According to http://www.neck-and-neck.com/disco/albums/alchemy.html, it was released in Feb., 1984.

Allen this is just one of many sites that bear many different release dates. The date on the site you mention is probably the date the vinyl album was released that the CD was taken from. It is also not an official site so can't really be regarded for confirmation purposes - like wickipedia - the info is only as good as the source it came from.
-
Hi Simon, we are not talking about the CD diffusion. I didn't buy the CD in 1984. But if you want celebrate an anniversary you must refer to the first release. And the first release of Alchemy on CD was in 1984 (if I'm not wrong). We can say that CDs were not so diffused in Europe, but this is another subject.

Allen that is the date the vinyl album came out - if you look at the date the first album came out on the same webpage it says 1978 -
DIRE STRAITS (1978)
Vertigo 800 051-2
there is no way it came out on CD in 1978. They are referring to the vinyl release dates. I just checked my Making Movies Cd and it bears the date 1980 - well that is when the album came out not the CD - it is very misleading but I am sure Alchemy wasn't released in the Uk until the 1990s. That makes the 20th anniversary correct.

in 1984 all the DS CDs marketed in Europe were made in West Germany. Also the first Warner Bros issues were made in WG or Japan. We must distinguish between "made" and "marketed". It is not important if Alchemy was released in UK in 1984 (I think so): we know that Alchemy on CD existed in 1984. So, what means "20th anniversary edition"?

In terms of media items, i.e. books, newspapers, magazines, Cds and all forms of music - I think we should rely on publication dates not when they were 'made'. After all - you could argue a song was written many years before it appeared on a form of media and then a number of years later before that media was published. There needs to be a date that satisfies everyone and that is also absolute.
The 20th Anniversary Cd from what I can gather is being released in the UK? Therefore what they are saying is that it is 20 years since it was first available in that format in the UK.
-
Hi Simon, first of all I want to point that I'm not debating with you: from my side it is an interesting, friendly conversation and I hope from you too ;)
In 1985 BIA was released worldwide (at least in the Occident) on CD, vinyl and tape simultaneously: I don't believe there were CD plants in the UK, but you can't consider the copies sold in UK as imported, because even if the CDs were phisically made in West Germany or France they were marketed also in the UK. What happened in 1990? Also (I don't think so) if Alchemy was released on CD in the UK in 1990, I don't believe that UK is the "center of the world" ;D
In 1984 Alchemy existed on CD and was marketed in Europe (I can't say in UK).
The 20th Anniversary Cd from what I can gather is being released in the UK? Therefore what they are saying is that it is 20 years since it was first available in that format in the UK.
It could be an explication, but actually I don't believe it will be a local launch (neither I read on the "communique" any reference to Universal UK)
-
Hi Rudiger - yes this is an interesting and friendly discussion and one which i don't think we will ever get to the bottom of simply because there doesn't seem to be any official information available.
If anyone can show a definitive reference it would be much appreciated but there are too many unofficial sites stating different things.
No the UK is not the centre of the world but can anyone confirm if it is being released elsewhere in the world to coincide with the so-called 20th anniversary?
-
Actually it is likely that the first plant for manufacturing of CD in England is from 1990, since the first CD of the DS 'Made in UK " that I know is On every street.
I think the puzzle will be solved when we'll have an official statement ;)

I think it is quite pertinent. After all, as a fan, I want to know if it is just another way to raise money rather than giving the fans what they want. By calling it an anniversary album as opposed to a remixed re-release is going to generate more sales and with the Get Lucky fiasco of the deluxe edition it is starting to leave a bitter taste as it is something that I am sure MK cannot be too happy with.
-
I doubt it.
A Blu Ray version of Alchemy released this year could be called anything the company wants! Anniversary? Who gives a ****?
We want great quality Alchemy concert released, great sound, best picture, who cares about dates?
Its interesting for sure, but honestly...........

I hope it will be on DVD as well as Blu-Ray, because I don't have Blu-Ray! :)

OK, even if the first CD release of Alchemy was 1990, it's still very stupid to have this "anniversary" edition of what was effectively a rerelease.
Sgt Pepper came out on CD in 1987. Are they going to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sgt Pepper in two years time? No. Because that would be fucking stupid.
My sincere hope is that this 20th anniversary thing is just a mistake and we are getting worked up about nothing. :)

I interpret it the other way - the 1984 (the phonogram release) is when the vinyl came out - the CD released later (in UK that is). My Making Movies CD is dated 1980 - the date the vinyl came out even though it wasn't released as a CD till a few years later.
If you read further it states:
Available on double L.P.,double stereo chrome cassette, vhs & betamax stereo video cassette
Also reissued as a Re-mastered. 2 disc set
The copyright symbol states when the recording was first copyrighted and the P symbol is when it was first released in its mechanical format i.e. the vinyl album. That is all they depict - they cannot be used to determine the release date of the CD.

No, we don't, as there is no definitive evidence to suggest that 1990 WAS the date of release.

I read many years ago that Alchemy was one of the firsts records to be released on cd at the time, and at the time it means between 1984-1986 that was the period of time when the cd was beguining to be promoted. ???
It is true that in 1990 it was a edition of Alchemy on cd, and maybe that
-
OK, let's try.
Blu-ray is certainly the film (video)
the other 2 versions (standard and deluxe) could be audio or video discs.
If video, the standard version should be the DVD, while the 2discs version should be the standard DVD + another one (with bonus footage?)
If audio, the standard version could be a CD with the highlights of the show, as suggested by Julio (I hope they will not release this shame), while the 2 discs version could be the standard concert (why they should call it deluxe?)
My opinion is that - again as suggested by Julio - the standard edition will be 2CD, while the one called "Deluxe 2 discs" will be 2CD + 1DVD.
Regarding the date of the first release of Alchemy on CD, so far no one has provided definitive evidences. I try to carry another brick in favour of mid-80s ;D This is the pic of an early release of Alchemy on CD: to my knowledge (but I could be wrong) Vertigo Label in 90s didn't use this blue pattern (which was present in the 80's releases).
Anyway I agree that the "anniversary" should refer to the date of the first release, in any format.
Last thing: Blu-ray is certainly a video. The first video release (on VHS) was certainly in 1984 (I hope nobody doubt about it), so, what means 20th anniversary edition referred to the video? ;D
-
It looks like it was release in 1984 ;D
I asked Chuck about the releases, hope he knows and he wants to answer me :)

I bought Alchemy on CD in 1992 and my copy doesn't look like this, it's a red/orange pattern, same as the other DS albums on CD up to BiA (bought them all on CD in 92 except OES which I got in 91).
-
As far as I know the blue pattern was used in '80
-
Alchemy was released both on audio and video in 1984.
"Alchemy Live - 20th Anniversary Edition"
Ah ah ah they are just 6 years late!
But from a marketing point of view "Alchemy Live - 26th Anniversary Edition" does not sound as good.
-
Well, maybe this is the definitive evidence about the release of Alchemy on CD in 1984: this is an excerpt from the DSIS letter dated january 1984:
"Hi!
I can now let you know we have more specific info about the live single/album/video-cassette. A double A-side single will be out Feb 10th (Love Over Gold/Solid Rock) and will be in 10" or 12" format (Solid Rock is too long to fit on a standard 7" single!). The album and video-cassette will be out March 16th.
Track listing for the LP is:
Once Upon A Time In The West
Expresso Love
Private Investigations
Sultans Of Swing
Romeo And Juliet
Two Young Lovers
Tunnel Of Love
Telegraph Road
Solid Rock
Theme From Local Hero
Love Over Gold will be a bonus track on the cassette and compact disc (it wouldn't fit on the LP) but of course you'll have it anyway if you bought the single!
Around the time of all these items being released, the band will be doing a little press/promotion, so you may see bits and pieces appearing in papers..... "
We haven't the exact date of the CD release (I guess few months later than the LP), but we can say it was released in 1984, unless we want to think that Liz was writing about a "six-years-later" release ;D
period?
-
It's getting us closer as is the vertigo CD label. But the letter was talking in the future tense i.e. when the CD WILL be released. It would not be safe to assume it actually was released in the time periods stated - it may have been shelved for 6 years as does happen :)

Clutching at straws now Simon! As you know, Dire Straits were MASSIVE in the UK right through the 80s. Take a look at the Guinness Book of Hit Albums and you can see the hundreds and hundreds of weeks that DS spent on the album charts. Quite frankly I fid it incredulous that any of the DS albums was not released on CD until 1990, particularly as they were on a subsidiary of Phillips who invented the CD, and with Brothers in Arms they inadvertantly became THE band of the CD generation.
In fact, thinking about this, isn't there an advert for CD in one of the BiA tour books that shows the various DS albums on CD? (Not sure about this one, could have made it up :) )
-

Some useless info - Philips may have invented the CD but once they had, they had no idea what to do with it. Sony put the music onto CDs.

Not wanting to spoil the party but anyone know which country that tour programme was from?

I would like to remind - Alchemy was released on CD (in 1984) in USA, Japan and Europe excluding UK.
-

Seriously, I really don't mind if in the UK Alchemy was released in 1984 or 1990. I like to collect old editions of the DS cds and if for the first four albums I had no doubt about the release date (1983, not 1984), for one minute you've cracked my certainties about Alchemy.
-
I noticed whilst looking through all the info that has been posted on this thread i.e. programmes, CD labels etc. that in one advert ,if you bought a Philips CD player (in 1985) you were rewarded with a free ticket to see Dire Straits.
Now, in the days of CD players costing a few quid, you could actually reverse it and give away a CD player with every MK ticket bought. Strange but true!

The fact that Love Over Gold is included on the CD may make people purchase the deluxe edition. Is this another marketing ploy? MK is a musician first and foremost, not a market stall seller. I am of the opinion he doesn't have much or rather he has very little say in what goes out to the public (not including his solo stuff in that statement).

An additional details: DVD will have NTSC. Subtitles for DVD & BR: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian
Intro is Saturday Night At The Movies (no surprice) As far as I know (but there is not any info) the DVD and BR should be zone free. The release date depends on country - from 03 till 07 May.

9 minutes sultans of swing (old grey whistle)... I don't know that version...
Yes, and all the sources date the Old Grey Whistle Test gig from Dire Straits May 15th, and not May 16th like they do. Maybe we can expect a real surprise here? And maybe those clips were chosen because they were filmed and not videoed and therefore are a good choice for a bluray?

I don't think bands would hang around the OGWT set another day just to play the same song again. Is it not just a typo?

In every country? ATRR was NTSC but it was filmed in the US so that's OK. But the original Alchemy must have been filmed in PAL...

The 3 at the right side. 1,2,3. Look behind your tv. And your laptop must have HDMI connection...
Otherwise, maybe a VGA cable to the blue connector (pc)
-
Yeah, won't necessarily have an HDMI, although if it has Blu-Ray you would think it does.
But failing that the VGA and a 3.5mm to 3.5mm will do it. :)
-
My laptop has an HDMI socket, and the back of my tv has a PC in socket.
Is that all i need to watch the Blu ray through my tv?
All things considered though, if i choose the DVD edition over the Blue Ray. Is the sound & picture quality really going to be greatly different?
As long as it's better than my VHS copy, i'll be happy.

No idea, Nigel, I am also not a man who has a way with technology. But I remember when I saw the first Bluray in my life, it was "007 Casino Royale" -
and I literally fell out of the sofa! I immediately started the movie a second time because it was SUCH a pleasure to watch it :o(on a big plasma screen) - and not because I didn't got the story... ;)
But there are also a lot of Blurays where the effort and money is wasted... It really depends on the quality of the scource I believe and the effort that is
taken. So I am eagerly waiting for the first reports here. Because I don't have a Bluray player. But would consider to buy one. Maybe some other releases will follow in the not too distant future when this one is a success! My dream release for Christmas 2010: Dire Straits The Tube 1985 on BluRay! :-* ::)

Hi LE. Thanks. I too may wait for the 1st reports to see if the Blu ray is worth it.
Also yeah, Wembley 85 on the Tube. A great show.
Especially the twiddly bits on SOS
This also has my fave verson of SFA.

Yes, Blu Ray CAN look spectacular. Unfortunately I think that Alchemy was shot on relatively low definition video which DVD will show adequetly. It's possible however that Chuck Ainlay has remixed the audio into one of the various HD audio formats. You would need a fancy HD audio decoder to benefit from that though.
-
Any idea if the original 'Saturday Night At The Movies' clip from the start of the VHS version will be included on the Dvd/Blu Ray?

Yes, I read somewhere that 'saturday night at the movies' will be the intro... But not sure if it's true...
If your Laptop has a HDMI socket, and your tv has one too... Than you need a HDMI cable ;) Than you can connect your
laptop to the tv (in great quality!)

9 minutes sultans of swing (old grey whistle)... I don't know that version...
maybe Lions will be included too

Oh Boy, its been a while since i checked in on this thread!! May 3rd!!!!!!!!!! ;D ;D
BluRay can be jaw droppingly spectacular on a full HD TV - i agree about Casino Royale, its a spectacular sight (& not just Craig :P). If they`ve transfered the picture as best they can, then BR will show it. There`s a website where BR discs are reviewed, with particular attention to how well old films turn out. A lot of surprising results. See http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Wizard-of-Oz-Blu-ray/7703/
Finger crossed for Alchemy!

No portobello belle? :-\ Okay, I'll wait one year and grab the dvd in the "5 euro box" at a record store. ;) Alchemy dvd is nice to have, but if there isn't any special to see, why buy it?

Yup, video tape. :)
-
I thought it was the same thing you see, just that in the case of the tape, they put the film in a little box instead of the reel.
but what do I know, I didn't even know about that guitar on back to the future ;D ;D
-
Video tape is a magnetic tape like the audio cassette tape or the tape on a credit card. Film tape consists of real pictures like when you take a photograph with a camera using the old film rolls (negative for paper copies or positive for slides). Film has much better quality than video and often a wider formate.

It looks like the single DVD only is planned for US. It will be released by Hip-O records under UM license on May 18.

I do not care about Deluxe, I will buy the Blu-Ray. If you would like the new sound, you could grab the PCM from DVD and to encode it to CD, flac or any prefered format.

I didn't have time to read all the messages above, so I am sorry when I repeat! ::)
I have been to the music store today and they confirmed that in my country the DVD can be bought at May 7th for Euro 20,00. The Luxe version is the DVD of the life concert and 2 CD's of the concert for almost Euro 30,00!! I will buy that one because I also read there will be a documentary in the box as well, so I don't want to miss that! :P

Also, if the left off Love Over Gold, that is a shame.
I think they left it off VHS and LP because it wouldn't fit,

Please don't tell me that it will include the original sound CD's..... !?!?!?
I sure do hope that they won't at least mess this up, with all the GL deluxe box and Early bird releases fiasco. They already "forgot" to include LoG, why why why...??
I'm very excited that imho the best concert on earth is being released, but sadly I have to say that disappointed with PCM or whichever person around MK is responsible for all this. All these little pieces are slowly building up. (also current MK's setlists!)

This time I am going to wait until the kid is asleep and the man out or away on business, anywhere but here and enjoy in blue ray quality on the home cinema system. aaaaahhh! Bliss!!

Well, I listened to the teaser again and I think it is the same. Maybe a minimal change in the speed, but I think I have listened to aLCHEMY about 2 million times :lol and would easily recognize the slightest change in anything... But I think so you are! ;D
LE
-
Yes it is most likely the mix that has been redone by Chuck that has affected the sound. However he will undoubtedly have used massive amounts of processing especially on the vocals and it is my concern that the album that MK wanted to represent DS at their raw best has now been taken out of that category for totally commercial reasons.

well, maybe yall wanna wait till you hear it for yourself, at home, on your home cinema systems? before giving all these opinions? feels a bit like the monte carlo thread.
I absolutely agree, Pottel.
Of course the vocals aren't redone. And of course a remix will affect the sound, that's what a remix does. Chuck said in an interview that he thought that the band played fantastic, but the original mix was terrible. From just hearing the clip, I don't think the voice sounds processed at all, but quite natural, less EQed in a way. I think the teaser sounds fantastic, so I am really looking forward to a proper sounding Alchemy. But, you could e-mail Chuck, I think he is known to answer e-mails in a very friendly and informative way.
-
Sound and the perception of sound is extremely subjective. Just because someone says something was a bad mix doesn't mean it wasn't enjoyed immensely by others. There are in my opinion far too many hugely over-processed albums - but that is my opinion and I am sure the sound engineers at the time were rubbing their lapels with pride when their work was done.

Absolutely ;)
-
Slightly OT but relevant I think. I remember a Def Leppard documentary on their album Pyromania which took years to make and was so over-processed that it was not possible for 4 guys to make the sounds that emanated from it (40 guys maybe with a load of synthetic sounds!). They subsequently asked Jim Steinman to produce their next album and he wrapped it up in a few weeks - but the band didn't like the sound - they thought he hadn't spent long enough mixing/mastering it so they sacked him. Jim Steinman - the guy who wrote and produced probably one of the best selling albums of all time! :-)
The following quote by Steinman says it all as far as I am concerned:
"That was bullshit, like working with blanks. I've come to believe that Def Leppard is basically like George Bush, a package item with an amazing amount of confection and no content. They're just like Spinal Tap. It's really all the producer - a Mutt Lange creation. They come out as great records, beautifully layered technically, but so empty".

Agreed, I'm in the same boat, I bought the copied dvd on ebay a few years ago,the quality is ok & its certainly easier to store than the vhs copy but Chucks version obviously has to be far superior - no way am I buying a deluxe version that includes 2 cds that I have already though - a bit of a waste of money really if you ask me just to have a a box set ::)

Maybe the Chuck Ainley remix is just the 5.1 surround version, and this format CANNOT be pressed to a normal CD ...
At least I now understand it the way that the bonus material is also on the Bluray, I already saw a horror scenario that I must buy the Bluray for HD, PLUS the Deluxe DVD for that bonus stuff (which will be better quality than the versions we have of it). This would have been a no-go for me, I rather would have illegally downloaded the bonus stuff somewhere before paying for Alchemy for the 5th time then (vinyl, VHS, CD, DVD, Bluray)

Alchemy Live restored to pristine high definition visual clarity, remixed in PCM Uncompressed Stereo and Digital 5.1 Surround Sound
-
IMHO I think by "the original album" they mean the same tracks remixed in a better way without removing or adding additional songs.Original album - Same songs remixed by Chuck! same as in Dire Straits (1978) original album remixed (1996) or something like that! I may be wrong but anyway I did preorder the deluxe edition yesterday.

Yes as long as the new Alchemy isn't 'beautifully layered technology' that disguises away the raw talent that MK so wanted to reproduce with the live album.

It seems the audio CD isn't remixed by Chuck if I'm correct. Such a shame! :(

Yes, but recording music in the studio (when the band don't have a clue of what and how they are going to play, as the quote is about) and mixing an already performed live recording are totally different things. But you obviously have a point though ;) So let's hope that Chucks new mix is about balancing the instrument right and "opening up" the sound so it's more natural sounding (less EQ and prosessing instead of more). That's what Chuck is known for, anyway.

I`m preparing my Blu-Ray Alchemy evening.
Going to get a top notch bottle of wine (i.e. one in a bottle), favourite snacks for the family, dim the lights, cuddle up..... Saturday Night At The Movies....
Been told May 7th by our local Aussie store, JB HiFi.
Really excited, this is my DS dream come true! ;D

According to the official press release "Blu-ray includes the material from DVD in Hi Def
and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 Surround, plus the original live album as downloadable MP3 audio files".
So if by bonus stuff you mean the Arena documentary and the OGWT performances. Happy to say they are on the standard DVD (confirmed by the amazon listing, if you have confidence in these).

Speaking of which, the German release date is May 14th. DVD 17,99

If it helps - you will also need a good enough HD TV to watch it on too. If you don't have a full HD TV then perhaps don't bother. There are 'Full HD' and 'HD Ready' TVs and there is a difference.

yup, get a "full-hd only, never ever get a hd ready version anymore.

Nigel, you can pick up this Blu Ray player cheap:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168916
Good reviews and apparently it's quite uniqie in Blu Ray players in that it will play Blu Ray discs from other countries too.
On the Def Leppard thing, if you listen to Brian Adams releases from the late 80s/early 90s (also produced by Mutt Lange) they sound pretty much identical.
Sorry, I'm supposed to be away from teh forum, but I'm getting excited about Alchemy. :)

You should be very careful then because almost everbody around here is already spoiled (even Goldenheart96 ;D) and therefore very careless about
song titles, set lists etc.. And that in almost every post! Folks are very interested in YOUR opinion about everything! :lol

OK, thanks for the tip, I've probably pushed my luck too far, I'm out of here.

Might just buy Alchemy on Dvd for now, and decide on a Blu ray player later.
But i'll probably still change my mind on a daily basis. :lol

BBB, with `Full HD` TV, a BluRay movie really comes alive. Its terrific really. There are heaps of reviews on the quality of BluRay releases. Can`t wait for Alchemy on BR myself, if they`ve gone to trouble to release it in that format i can`t imagine it not being impressive. I guess everyone has their own opinions.

Watch out for a fantasic Alchemy competition coming very soon. You are advised not to pre-order from anywhere until you see the competition details. From MKNews Site.
Is it not a strange thing to deter people from pre-ordering because of a little Unofficial Fan Site for about one week now? I think this is very counterproductive to a commercially motivated re-release... Totally unobjective of course, but I was thinking about it and wondered, when will the competition start?

Yes, we're going to get text-messages whenever Dire Straits goes on Tour :D Now i have to keep an eye on my mobile phone every minute ::)

I Have It!!!!!! ;D
On Blu-Ray. I called our local shop who said they`d just got them in, when i asked if I still had to wait for Fri they said `Nahhh!`
Packaging is underwhelming, crappy leaflet inside with a blurb that i could`ve wrote about the 80s! Will watch the documentary and extras tonight (maybe Sultans too) because my wife is out. So still planning to have a big premiere tomorrow evening, snacks provided, pls bring your own drinks - you`re all invited of course! :D
Oh day of days! I`ve been waiting for this ever since i joined Knopfler forums to ask "Why No Alchemy?"!!!

Great ! please let us know how it is ! :)
I love Alchemy, because it is a legendary concert, the first of its kind with extended versions.
Nonetheless, while I love it very much and will definitely by it on Blue-Ray, I feel that this is not the *very best* concert.
IMHO:
- The LoG tour was a bit too rough
- The OES tour was a bit too polished (especially because of the (ab)use of Paul Franklin's steel guitar)
- The BiA tour was just right: more polished than LoG (more "liquid" guitar, for a lack of a better work, nice use of Saxophone on SoS and R&J for instance). But, it laked Telegraph Road...
- As for TR, it seemed that we will only get the Alchemy version; nice, energetic, but rough. The OES version had nice saxophone but was somehow spoiled by the steel guitar. The 96 version is really the best to me (especially Vaison) but is unlikely to be released officially; the 2001 and 2005 versions are nice but not as energetic as the 96 ones; as for the 2008 and 2010 versions, they are a bit too laid-back for me.
- As for ToL, again the Alchemy version is great but a bit too rough; the BiA versions are nicer, but for me nothing will beat Munich'91: lovely and gorgeous...
Anyway, I guess we will have to be centented with Alchemy. Not that bad anyway :)

@herlock:
I would give a lot to have Paul Franklin back touring with MK! He was the best addition to his career apart from Guy Fletcher.
Sorry folks, one question here that might have popped up earlier, but I am too lazy to read all the dozens of sides of posts:
I understand that the Alchemy deluxe dvd edition will have the "Original Live Album" as a bonus. Question is: Is this one the new version
mixed by Chuck? Or is the new mix only on BluRay and DVD content? I can't make out this info correct. Sorry, Ustas if this will bring you up ;D,
but I want the new good sounding mix, have no bluray but DVD. What should I buy?
Chuck said he found the old mix very bad and was astonished about the quality of the tapes. So I think they will not put out the old original
mix again, will they? PLEASE HELP POOR OLD LOVE EXPRESSO! ::)

According to MKNews only the DVD and Blueray are remixed by Chuck, not the CDs. http://www.mark-knopfler-news.co.uk/alchemy.html (http://www.mark-knopfler-news.co.uk/alchemy.html) It says "original sound".

Dont't get me wrong, I have nothing against PF who is a highly talented pedal steel player; indeed, his contributions to live songs such as On Every Street are amazing (and MK said that the reason he is not playing this song live anymore is precisely the lack of Pedal Steel); I just think he was given way too much space on the OES tour, and too much of it ruins it: on TR and BIA, for instance, the amount of pedal steel is just abusive... IMHO, of course :)
I miss Chris White much more than Paul Franklin... matter of taste, anyway.
Cheers

I would travel to every place if PF was playing with MK, I love it :)

Watched the Arena doco - the audio quality is terrific, & goddamn i wish they`d recorded that version of Making Movies!!!!! ;D What a great song, its nice watching the whole thing instead of small youtube clips.
OK, the premiere is tomorrow at my place BUT, couldn`t resist a sneak peak at the Sultans Of Swing we all know and love...
The Blu-Ray picture on my 46" Sony full HD, is.......... fuzzy & the colours glare!!! Arrrr! :o It feels like watching the best ever VHS cassette, ever!!!!! I suppose they did the best they could, & its still a Dire Straits dream come true.
The Audio is TERRIFIC!!!! Even on my dodgy stereo, it sounded amazing & i`ll be sure to purchase some sort of complimentary 5:1 HD sound system soon because of this BR disc! Amazing.
Can`t wait for tomorrow, anyone coming???

umm, would love to travel to the other end of the world to watch a DVD I'm gonna get in less than a week, but unfortunately, I am having my hair cut tomorrow. Sorry! ;D
