Hopefully, if anyone is at or following the auction on line, a note will be kept of how much each item sells for ?
Much as I'd love to bid on a cheaper item ( lap steel or mandolin? ) common sense tells me not to, and I'm not available to attend or follow it online. :(

All realised prices will be available on the website.
If you decide to bid, you can place an absentee bid in advance (before 30 January).

Will stream it on my TV. Working from home has its benefits  ;D

I'm really curious to see what kind of prices his guitars will be selling for, even the non-essential ones.

Do we have any bidders at AMIT?

The prices for those non-essential ones are interesting. I mean, there are guitars that Mark has received as an gift and possbily played couple of notes or not. Possibly someone would like to have a guitar from MK's collection at any cost and that could increase also price of these. Or not.  :think

I placed a bid online for the 1984 red/black Pensa Suhr, but I did it more out of novelty than anything else. I'm obviously not going to get that guitar

It's funny what they write in the blurb for many of the non-essential guitars: "From time to time, Knopfler kept this guitar in his study for home use." I'd say the B.S. factor is pretty high  ;D I mean, some of those instruments he's probably hardly even looked at.

Is that after 2hrs of blank screen and does it include those watching via their smart TVs?  I suppose most watchers will just be the hardcore fans tbh.  The rest will just be interested in what the big ticket items sold for.

The Mark Knopfler Christie’s auction is going gangbusters! One of Rudy’s “Pensa” guitars sold for 400,000GBP earlier which made me so proud to even be involved with a name so synonymous with guitar lore. And then, the 1959 Les Paul ‘Standard’ hit the podium. Started at 100,000GBP, and in a matter of minutes closed at 550,000GBP ($698,500). This is not some sort of cash grab either. So much of the proceeds will go to 4 different charities that Mark regularly pours money into. In the middle of the auction, Christie’s announced that they had never experienced such an overwhelming response from potential bidders calling and registering, and as the prices soared, so did the willingness to donate. Christie’s announced that they would increase their charitable donation by another 50,000GBP. The primary Auctioneer even had to stop and announce that this had been a highlight of her career. This was all after Lot 42, the 59’ LP. There are still well over 60 guitars to go I believe. And of course, the comments of Mark’s generosity, kindness, patience poured in, as I would have expected. I’ve never witnessed anything so grand, so exciting in the guitar world. Amazing.

***

I dunno, guys. There's so much praise coming from these "official" figures all the time. Why, it's the best auction on the planet. I think I get it. Mark Knopfler is the greatest guitar player and songwriter to ever walk the Earth. "Ahead Of The Game" is the best song ever written. Amen.

As you can see, even though I have at least some MK following, I prefer not to say anything publicly neither about the auction nor about the new song. The 1959 Les Paul went almost for its street price, and the glorified MK-1 has entirely flopped everybody's expectations.

It's a pity my posts receive so much negativity and condescending responses, as I'm just trying to look past praise, past accomplishments and any other filters you can think of and write directly from my heart. It's easy to just accept and praise everything all the time. I often miss a more detailed and critical look at things on this forum in the sea of approval and justification, and this is why I write and troll so much.

It's become quite boring.
Nothing has gone very high, the LP'59  is a disappointment and obviously a bargain for whoever has that kind of money.

Yet nothing is affordable, even the shitty guitars are out of range.

Never mind, I guess you said more than enough the last couple of days about nearly evetything.  ;)

You say you troll. And then wonder if you get negative responses, lol. Of course there is appraisal, this is a fan forum.  ???

Close to 900k USD is not a bargain when add the fees plus VAT.

See, you already accusing me of something I never meant. I do troll SOMETIMES. Barely. The vast majority of the time I write sincerely. Nothing wrong with a little bit of trolling anyway. As for the fan forum, does being a fan make you a positive appraisal machine? I don't think so. Quite the contrary. I just have a lot to say, please forgive me.

I’ll forgive you, water under the bridge. Only if it’s in the centre of the screen;-)

All good

In fact, all 4 Red Strats went for about 100 grand each. The Strat is still the real MK guitar. The margin is even bigger than for Martins.

I expected the 59 to go at least 750k hammer price.

Yes, the prices are disappointing indeed. As I wrote the previous message I thought, FENDER STRATS OWNED AND USED BY MARK KNOPFLER, his arguably most iconic guitars people associate him with, one of which is a freaking 1/1 artist's prototype, which is even documented in 2009 live shows, all went for 100K minus taxes and commissions or whatever.

Tells you a lot, or probably everything you need to know about Mark's popularity. He wanted to be less famous, he got it, and now we have the numbers to prove it.

It seems that The "cheaper" guitars attract the "artist premium", but that the guitars  that have a higher intrinsic value don't benefit from this in the same way. If his 59 Les Paul makes the ballpark figure for that model I consider that's reasonable.  What i find astounding is that Ekos and Teiscos made so much more than their estimate, which must be partly due to Mark's ownership(and they are not all "shitty" - Japan produced some good instruments in the 60s compared to some of the cheaper alternatives) and they do have that retro tone Mark wanted on Shangri La & KTGC.   But yes, £13K was ridiculous for a cigar box guitar.

It's been interesting to watch. I can't help thinking though after all these sales more should have been given to charity, and yes I'm talking about MKs proportion. I've gone from excited interest to slight disgust at the amounts of money involved, and what money sits behind winning bids.

I'm grateful to have been able to view them for free but the whole exercise provokes feelings of inequality; maybe that's just a wider comment on the society I live in.

Some guitars are ridiculously overpaid so I don't think you can say anything about Mark's popularity. Let alone prove anything.

David Gilmour's black Partcaster which from what I can tell was modified a lot went for almost the entire yield of Mark's auction. He'll generate more with the signed Teenage Cancer Les Paul, but that's cheating.

Mark's guitars, on the other hand, are meticulously crafted and constructed, most of the time with his exact specifications in mind. And then being kept in pristine condition with care, barely showing any playing wear. And used on some great recordings, both video and audio. I don't know what's overpaid where and why one can still argue that Mark is popular when he's not.

You can bet even if Mark put out his other iconic guitars, like the National, it would also generate the "meh" outcome. It would sell for 400 grand just like Pensa.

I too think 25% is way too little. And the whole thing is really a bit of a bizarre freakshow. Especially in light of how totally messed up our world is right now.

What is the point you are trying to make? David Gilmour can be considered a bigger and/or more popular artist and that's perfectly fine.

Well that was it. A lot of fun, a lot of sadness.

I pray they will end up in in great caring musical homes or with professional artists who knows how to play. Time will tell if any artists will choose to display any winnings.
