One of the best shows in recent history. Intimate, spontaneous, funny, lots of songs, no piss breaks, no drummer and still breathtaking.

What I love about this show is how it really shows the importance of a drummer. It's so easy to play with a good drummer and it ads so much to the song, so can understand Mark's drummer jokes he told. This show has a feeling that it's almost like a cover band doing MK songs, and this contrast between the reality and perception really strikes me.

I quite enjoy MK without a drummer to be honest....
I think of the shows I've been to where there have been minimal musicians: Hay-on-Wye, Bridport & Chalke Valley and they have been epic. They each have been a chance to study MK's playing at close distance.....

Yes, it's a wonderful concert and I am glad it was reorded by some nice person who shared it with us.
The songs Mark picked fit this format very well. The whole atmosphere between the band and the audience was so nice and friendly and I'm sure that nobody missed a drummer that evening.

It was great to see the Boothbay video again.  Marbletown was especially good, but I really enjoyed the whole performance. I had almost forgotten about it after such a long time!  :)

I remember that Mark had to wear a borrowed shirt for the show, because his luggage hadn't arrived in time and the shirt was a bit too small!   ;D

I agree that it was a great show with really great songs. I seriously missed a drummer (provided you have the right drummer…) but it's my opinion, of course. Anyway it was fantastic to hear songs that had never been played before and that will probably never be played again. It proves that Mark can do it if he really wants to… instead of playing the same songs over and over again (even if they are classics).

The IEM recording of this show is truly enjoyable by the way. If the person who recorded and shared it at the time reads these lines, may he / she be thanked here.

Thank you JF for the chronicle  :thumbsup

Quite a bizarre show for him in all honesty.  Personally I've never been a fan of these minimalistic shows he does but they are interesting.

Would you regard NHB concerts as bizarre?    I just wonder, because to me they are in a similar vein - a very relaxed MK with jokes thrown in and the audience having a great time.    Great music too!   :)

Personally, I think the small intimate shows are a really good experience - and to see and hear MK at close hand is absolutely awesome. The three I have attended stick firmly in the front of my mind (especially Bridport!!!)
I haven't been to a NHB concert it's true but I'm sure like seeing him at the intimate shows it would have been good to see MK whatever his platform!!

Been to 4 NHB shows (5 if you include 2002) and they were all amazing, especially the 2 at Ronnie Scott's.

Wow! I just never got to any of them - I suppose thinking on it the closest I got to a NHB gig was at Beaulieu (28th July 2002) with the 'two' set changes!! and MK with 'Man Flu' too!!!

Well, I've never been to a NHB show but I was lucky enough to attend a 2002 show and I can say that it is arguably my best memory as a MK fan, and I mean it as I had a lot of highlights, the show at Dublin in 2006 being one of them for instance.

But London in 2002 was, well, as a show it's something that I will never forget.

Dublin 2006 was obviously a highlight just because of the company you were in :)

The NHB concerts were wonderful - I feel very lucky to have been to some of them - Leeds 1993, York 1997 and Ronnie Scott's, Birmingham 1998.   Hay-On-Wye and Hay-On-Sky were great also - it was lovely to meet some amiters there, including Dusty!  :)

Excellent, Yes Hay-on-Wye was good but eclipsed in my eyes by MK at Bridport & Chalke Valley!!

Do we know why they stopped touring by the way?

Being bored of a huge machine like Dire Straits is one thing but they could have kept on doing these little shows when they felt like it. I'm pretty sure that Steve and Brendan and Ed or Danny and Marcus and Guy would have have been up for it.

So was it Mark's decision only again?

The 2002 shows is be a great way to call it off but hey, why??

Interesting question. I think that's generally very strange that this so-called "supergroup" released only 1 record. And what's so super about it when it's just another bunch of musicians centered on MK? I think he stopped touring with that because he realized everything he's in is always centered around him so why bother. I think just because he has less time now, he concentrates on his solo career. Back then he could afford other projects, but especially now the time is speeding faster and faster. No time for Notting Hillbillies, unfortunately.

I have never thought that NHB were centred on MK - even though he stood in the middle.   The singing was fairly equally divided between MK, Steve and Brendan. The videos that show MK all the time and ignore the others give that impression, particularly regarding Brendan.

Back on topic, I re-watched the Romeo and Juliet ending part that Richard plays instead of Mark. The occasion of a lifetime for him and it's pretty moving indeed, as JF pointed out in his article.

Hmm, you know I'm not sure what night I attended. I want to say the Thursday?!

I could work it out from a recording as I shouted something at my cousin Bobby when he was introduced.

PS No one ever called NHB a supergroup.

The Thursday is the night when they recorded / filmed the show, the best gig of the four, I believe.

Yes I know. I like John Mc C. but I liked Bobby V. very much. Another suspect replacement by MK…  :hmm

And Stuart Duncan was also very very cool IMO.

Just bizarre in the sense that he flew across the Atlantic to perform a single show with no drummer with some of his songs for the very first time.  I think the Hillbillies were very different.  :)

Yes and no. All the musicians except from Guy were American so I think it made the whole thing pretty much easy to organize. Plus, they had already played live or recorded all the songs of that night, which means very few rehearsals if some. As for no drummer, I don't know. Maybe Danny wasn't available or maybe Mark wanted to try something with no drummer…

I was always under the impression that he did the concert at the request of Richard Ford, a close friend of MK, for charity - the renovation of the Opera House.   :-\

I was always under the impression that he did the concert at the request of Richard Ford, a close friend of MK, for charity - the renovation of the Opera House.   :-\

You might be right there for once Val.  Rings a bell.  ;)

Beautiful and unique concert. The biggest surprises: Whoop de doo, A place where we used to live.

Rewatched it as I was doing work tonight. It's great.

I think it's particularly nice to hear Richard's electric guitar parts a bit more clearly. Sometimes he gets hidden behind other sounds I think. The version of DWB is really great-it just shows how important the bouzouki part is.

Couple of interesting choices not to include Guy though. No organ parts in PfP or DG. He's played organ in both in some of the smaller gigs before.

Welcome Elliott, great first post! I agree with you it was brilliant to hear Richard accompany MK perhaps like you say a bit clearer than we are all used to as he is often 'lost' in the mix at a concert! Love his style of playing....

It's always great to see MK performing in such a different environment. I saw him in the Chalke Valley History Festival (the mud festival) and it was such a great experience, specially since he played "Occupation Blues" for the first and last time live, such a great surprise!

Richard's professionalism sometimes frightens me. Prob the best session guitar player on the whole planet, a true Nashville cat. Tho, with that said, he's certainly overkilling it for Mark's music, you don't need 10000 albums and 50 years of recording veteran to strum a couple of chords :lol

And I think having Richard in the band could make an impression that the rhythm in Mark's songs is impossibly hard to play, tho it's not that hard.

Yes, "Occupation Blues" was a surprise. From all the songs he could've played, nobody could expect that one!

It was completely unreal to say the least when he started talking about OB and then played it for us! Last song on my mind that I thought he'd play to be honest - but with MK you have to expect surprises - sometimes!!

Mud being the underlying word! It was everywhere! Seeing MK look like a typical 'Country Gent' there was amazing and priceless - flat cap, wax jacket and wellys on!!!

Not sure why that showed up as my first post. I haven’t posted tons but that’s most definitely not my first.

Thanks for the welcome though!

Rewatched this a few days ago and have to say the one thing that stood out for me was that his vocal carried the show at times.  We even got the Paraguay-eee moments!  It was very good that night and surprising to see how much that has also declined since then.  R&J simply doesn't work without the full band though in that he can't pull it off with his voice.  The last time he sang that well was Mandela show 1988.

Yes, I personally enjoy MK without drums. It puts his playing and singing into another perspective...

Yes exactly - I was just trying to track down photos of a guitar that was played at Boothbay. To be clear, we license and pay for all photos in our catalogues - nothing would ever be used without permission. But no worries, we managed to find that one :)

Thank you. Are you into MK's music or is it "just a job" for you if I may ask. I think it's nice to see that you chose AMIT for your research.
