Suddenly 150 cases in Italy in the last 3 days
and the epicenter is between Milan and Piacenza and about 80km from where I live, mmm
Schools, Universities, Sport events, etc are all closed/cancelled for the next 2 weeks in the whole north of italy

I believe the Chinese government are doing a Chernobyl with this; it was known about long before they released the news to the world. There is no way they could build these hospitals so quickly. There are probably far more cases than they are revealing too.

Or maybe someone wants the western world to blame china with consequent major economic damage
for something that is just a kind of pneumonia with a 'kewl' media name.
Pneumonia kills 50-100K in the US each year and 100-200K in Europe each year (millions of cases overall),
complete silence by media, but few deaths compared to those numbers by covid-19 are considered like plague
and mentioned everywhere in the media stream.
FULLY agree.
Influenza kills the thousands you mention, every friggin year. also, the mortality rate of corona does not seem to be all that high, with varying numbers between 0,5 and 3,5%
fuck mainstream media!
-
It's curious that every year there is a new virus, and then it dissapears leaving his place in the media for a new one...
Is that they just last one year?
Curious...
-
With global economy everything is carried by persons, animals and good that goes from one point to another.
Not a lot of thing to do other than to stop all transports and everybody stay where they are. No travel.
Simple as that despite the economic pressure.

It's not curious, it's biology. This one is in the news because it is novel and no vaccine has yet been developed.

Education is the most wonderful tool, we should avail ourselves of it.
-
yes, but think of some viruses that don't seem to expire like acute viral nasopharyngitis is, also known as Cold, or AIDS perhaps? You never know... :think
You are right, but viruses always need a vector to travel. Still you have to consider how fast something coming from the heart of China is spreading and in the current case we know that the transmission vector is not bird, rats or goods but human. Stop travelling is the first good thing to do.

I see what you did there :lol
I'm planning to travel Germany in a month so it would be a real shame if they'd close the border because of the stupid virus.

Imagine this happening a year ago, escalating and eventually leading to Mark and his management cancelling the whole tour :o
Depending on what happens in the next few months, maybe this will happen for several artists/bands...

This is just people going nuts for a disease that kill less people than the usual flu.
Mass media filling hours of tv, radio and papers...

Yea but still it affects many events, just on the sports section several Serie A games postponed 2 weekends in a row and probably more to come.
MotoGP class cancelled their season opener i Qatar. Most teams fly from Italy, and Qatar have decided that everyone arriving from there will be put in a 2w quarantine...
So, might be media blowing things up (as usual) but still some really sad results of this virus... Was really looking forward to the Qatar GP.

Influenza we have a vaccine for, Covid-19 we don't and it is more deadly. Today Italy announced 52 deaths from it so I think it should be taken seriously.

Hamburg and Stuttgart hopefully, but it seems to me that the virus situation escalates so quickly there's a chance of the virus taking over my holiday.

That's right Jbaent. I heard that worldwide between 250.000 and 500.000 die from flu every year. That means at least 20.000 every month as an average.
So January and February would mean at least 40.000 people died from flu. Compared to 3.000-4.000 people who died from Covid19 in the same time.
-
but the mortality rate is totally different.
we cannot compare apples and oranges.
we have vaccines against the different strains of flu (or mortality would of course be much, much higher)
going foward, a vaccine WILL be found, and it will become one of many flu variants that travel the globe every year.
Also, it is really only older people that should be scared, and i am talking 70 and upwards.
up to 49 years old the risk of dying from this new virus is roughly 0,3%
for the group 79 yrs and older it is already 14,8%
40.000 people diead from the flu this year alone, true, BUT, many, mannnnnnny more got it and got well again. mortality for normal flu is far below the Covid19 number.
-
Also many got the covid and got well too. But the media does not talk about it as it doesn't fit with his end of the world scenario...

Spanish press all stick to alarmisme.
I trust in the "comunicados" from the medical sources.
The medical sources in Spain they all say that despite having vaccines for normal flu, lot of people (usually old with previous health problem) doesn't go to have their vaccine and die from normal flu. And despite not existing vaccine for the covid, anyway from the covid die less people than from normal flu...
That comes from medical sources, not from the alarmist press media.

I'm going to the football tonight attended by fans travelling from the biggest hit area of Germany. The return leg is currently to be played behind closed doors, but the competition is at risk of being cancelled anyway with a meeting tomorrow. Probably a meaningless game tonight and a strange atmosphere. :-\

DO NOT GO, don't risk, all competitions will never be completed this season, maybe even next season is at risk

Very strange situation waiting for a big disaster...that may never happen.
Today at a food shop I was so upset by someone that was staying too close behind me!

Went to the game and looks like it was the last game this season! The football authorities are now at odds with what to do. It's not due to peak here for another 12-14 weeks and players contracts will have expired and no time to play the remaining games. They will have to declare the season null and void with winners and relegation places still to be decided.
The financial consequences for the smaller clubs here will no doubt put some out of business.

Whatever happens they will find a method to complete at least the domestic season, even if they delay next years. Promotion to the PL for example is worth 20/30 mil per club. The litigation surrounding an abandoned season would be (like covid 19) unprecedented.

I understand what you're saying but I can't see how, and that's not how they're starting to talk here now. The player's union have said there will be no games played behind closed doors so it rules that out. Some players contracts will be up in May too so the games would have to be played before then. Last time anything like this happened was during WWII and even then the league was completed, just not officially counted.

Nothing wrong with discussing it I think. England and most leagues in Europe are run by TV money but most clubs in Scotland survive week to week basically on gate receipts, even in the Premiership, so this will have a dramatic effect on football with a knock-on effect to associated businesses such as catering, local pubs, transport etc.

There's a lot of alarmism here in Italy about UK Government decision to allow the Covid to spread

It is difficult time for everyone.
Covid-19 is an everyday subject and when time come to think about something else and enjoy it is cancelled because of that damned virus.
We don't know what will happened and predict how things will turn but the better thing to do is to keep calm and act responsibly.

This is a good link to track the overall situation and each country,
China has had very few cases recently so it seems the lockdown works after 2-3 weeks

At this state we can't say as the virs may evolve and a second wave can happen.
Of course hearing that China has less and less new case is recomforting - at least they are good news.
But we had to keep in mind that we are living on a day by day basis and tomorrow may sound different.

I don't agree it's "totally irrelevant." Aside from things I've already mentioned it provides an entertainment to millions and a good social experience to those who attend the games. If a few businesses go down the tubes it probably won't affect me the way this will, but I won't call them irrelevant.

One nice thing about this is that people are becoming interested in data, it's predictive power and the limitations of what it can predict.
Anyone interested in the hard core Math (still entertaining) of the curve shape I recommend 3Blue1Brown's great vid about exponential growth followed by saturation.
https://youtu.be/Kas0tIxDvrg
China's data of cases follows this graph exactly and wherever a geographical region puts in good controls (and limits contagion) that shape will follow, for example I expect Italy will saturate at a similar rate.
This BBC article has a nice 'easy on the eye' overview
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51235105?fbclid=IwAR3vvUeZNnLYKiZHUCsdm4krJOttcU0zVD8_x6nzOyRqKCMb7q90jhyl1C0
What I love about this is that the Italian data (if taken at face value / and I admit a few more days would be nice) shows a hopeful change of trend and yet the BBC headlines this W.H.O. table with "Italy has seen a steep rise in new cases" - Well, yes, but that isn't the whole story, it's a really bad, alarmist title for a statistical graph.
Stay safe everyone, and please take a novel contagious virus with severe outcomes seriously.

All travel and socialising to be avoided in UK. We will be in full lock down soon. I think they’ve tried to to a bit a day to avoid social unrest and panic.

Lombardy and my city which is quite close to Lombardy had a decent/better number (fewer new cases) today than yesterday,
let's hope this continues the next key days, means lockdown would work like in China

I think we can say in times like these, that shit matters jack shit

Nothing wrong with discussing it I think. England and most leagues in Europe are run by TV money but most clubs in Scotland survive week to week basically on gate receipts, even in the Premiership, so this will have a dramatic effect on football with a knock-on effect to associated businesses such as catering, local pubs, transport etc.
Far more businesses and people outside the football business are being affected. Totally irrelevant
Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk
I don't agree it's "totally irrelevant." Aside from things I've already mentioned it provides an entertainment to millions and a good social experience to those who attend the games. If a few businesses go down the tubes it probably won't affect me the way this will, but I won't call them irrelevant.
Football discussion over. :-X

Nothing is of relevance when faced with this virus, football, music, Mark Knopfler, Nothing....

the main problem is asymptomatic people who are infected
but by being asymptomatic they don't quarantine and infect others

I’m thinking of everyone as we navigate these difficult times. They will pass, as they always do. I aim to be back in the studio recording songs as soon as possible. Take care of one another, keep calm and keep safe. We will pull through.

Both my wife and I seem to have it. She’s NHS and I’m London Underground and haven’t till now stopped working. It was inevitable we would get it though. She’s a lot worse than me but in the grand scheme both mild symptoms. I would say the fatigue is extraordinarily and relentless. Every time I think it’s starting to subside and do I anything energetic, it gets back up with a frying pan and smacks me straight back down. I think the kids have it but virtually no symptoms, just a bit more grumpy and tired than usual. Although its a lot of doom and gloom out there, hopefully the vast majority of us only get these mild symptoms. Stay safe fellow fans of good music.

Good Luck, Did you call to be tested ?
Fever ? I heard a lot of stories that it starts with a 39-39.5 fever and less than 95% Finger Pulse Oximeter value,
that small lightweight device used to monitor the amount of oxygen in the body
-
thanks for kind words, we’ll be ok if not a bit battered at the end. I have a fever and weird brain fog, it is a feeling I can’t explain and don’t remember ever experiencing before. No chance of getting tested at the moment in the UK. We failed that part, unlike South Korea who seem to be the best at dealing with this.

Thanks Superval.
An interesting viewpoint in true Hitchens family style (Many still desperately miss his brothers contributions). My only concern with his views are this.
Would the neo liberals at the heart of our collective governments really do this much damage, run up this much debt, and scar so many countries forever on the basis of pure panic?
Way to much self interest involved for it to be true surely?
It is a viewpoint that does nag at you though....

They're now saying people can definitely catch the virus again where they previously thought it was unlikely. I don't doubt either this bug is mutating either and there are now different strains as it spreads throughout the world. The more strains there are, the more difficult a vaccine will be to develop. We have never found one for the common cold for this very reason so what chance do we have with a new virus?
We can't stay indoors all our lives so this is coming back and as it mutates it's getting more dangerous. I don't really have any hope for a vaccine. The only infectious disease we've ever eradicated is smallpox.

I guess I have to step in here. You both are talking about the German Nazi expression "Endlösung", in English Final Solution, which was referred to the (in Nazi speech) inhuman expression of "Jewish solution", which planned the and ended in genozide, Holocaust.
Now, first of all, Pensa is an not native English speaker. So even if "Final solution" has become a fix term in English language the same as in Germany, I find it a bit harsh from Dusty and also Pottel to push to it this somewhat secretly or almost arrogant way instead of just saying clearly what your problem is.
I am German and I read Pensa's post yesterday, believe it or not, and I absolutely did not think about that term the slightest, which of course is because I am not an English Native speaker myself. So maybe it's a little too much to ask from people who use not their mother tongue to care about really all historical and political intensions of any text? The good message of Pensa's post should have at least be commented by the two of you as well, don't you think? I am sure you will not intend to assume that Pensa used that term intensionally?

Somehow I knew you would reply. I only wanted to explain what dusty reffered to. As also people who are not English natives sometimes know the "meaning" of that expression.

Love Expresso it was a great clarification.
In France too we are avoiding using that term [when referring to something that is not related to The Holocaust].

It surprises me things like that are being discussed at all, of course it was unintentional. Luckily, for Russia this term is extremely formal ("Okonchatelnoe reshenie"), nobody says it like that except for this situation. It was hilarious when in late 90s Nokia did in fact use the motto "Jedem das Seine" in their marketing campaign, by which made A LOT of people angry.

Once upon a time, there was a teacher who wants his pupils to tell him what he's just drawn on the slate. A boy named Axle would always be first to come with the solution, and it was a bottom, a poo, a teat, a willy, and a such things. Finally, the teacher warned him, "Axle, please stop your shenanigans at once!"
Axle responded: "How is that? it's all you! As if it's me who draws it all over!

I'm going into possibly day 7 with this and I actually feel 95%!!! My taste/smell have returned and I'm really feeling well. My Dr today put me on a steroid inhaler to help with the last of my breathing issues, and my lungs do feel as strong as before..
Today was my 46th Birthday and I spent it in style - listening to the master on high volume all afternoon- my God his music is needed all the time! JB is on the backburner as I cant be doing with too many ultra fast solos at the moment and so its 100% melodic Knopfler for the foreseeable!!!!

I am now 6 days into this dreadful virus and it's not very nice at all, however I feel I'm on the other side now - I'm breathing easier, my taste/smell have returned and feeling somewhat brighter....do not underestimate this virus....
don't make me feel old bruv...
Oh dear, very sorry to hear you’ve been so unwell but glad to see you’ve turned a corner. My experience having it was not as bad as yours thankfully. My wifes hospital is struggling at the moment but will cope if things don’t get much worse. I really hope these vaccines get us out of this.
all the best to your wife old friend!h
Cheers Buddy and the same to you. The RAH night seems a long time ago now.

Get well soon Knopflerfan.

Be well and my thoughts for a very good recovery.

Evening all,
Thanks for all of the good wishes - best MK forum by far!!!
It's now been two weeks and I'm feeling much better although far from being 'out of the woods' yet.
My breathing for the first 4-5 days was awful - likened to breathing hot flames and losing the senses of smell and taste was awful. Ive never been so scared to be honest...
Thankfully they have returned. Breathing wise I am now on a steroid inhaler twice a day although hopefully I'll wean off of that....
I get very tired, although I'm able to walk with my wife around 5 miles a day but then that's my lot...
I have been most certainly helped by listening to MK over my isolating and even picked up the MK Strat to console myself! Oh how MK music lifts your spirits!!!
I managed to win 6x MK Promo singles for my collection from a local chap who after I won them dropped them to my home so I could listen to them asap! Fantastic eh?!
I think losing 5 stone in weight over a year ago almost certainly saved my life....
Best wishes to all in these strange times
KF

it seems that in the UK you are vaccinating people very fast compared to the rest of Europe,
how are you doing it ?

it seems that in the UK you are vaccinating people very fast compared to the rest of Europe,
how are you doing it ?
We have only one government to consider not 27 different countries! Also we were much more agile in signing up to the vaccine - three months before the EU! We paid for the development of AZ and paid for it up front.

Actually the 27 different countries are under one same wing, the UE, who is buying for all the countries at the same price and distributing it equally, otherwise, if every country had gone by himself, one or two countries with more economical power would buy most of the vaccines and the rest will have less or none. If it wasn't because of this, Spain, Portugal or Greece wouldn't had the number of vaccines we have...
Good for you, my British friends. Val, I hope Colin and you got it alredy!

I'm so glad for both of you. My wife will have her first one this week or next, as she works in education. I'll have to wait until the summer probably.

Actually it's only 1 month before EU approval, it seems the difference is in the better logistics

To put it bluntly, the EU are playing politics with lives. No offence to our German or French friends (although I'm sure they will agree) but Merkel and Macron scaremongering with the AZ vaccine is probably a new low. >:(

could've stayed.
must be bitter for our scottish friends.

surely your fishermen are happy with the humongous gains they got.
still, it will never come this far, all part of the play (from both sides) some last minute solution will pop up.
also, Astra zeneca is not entirely guilt free here (as is the EU for not signing better deals and now having to resort to this shit)

I think dmg wasn’t talking about the current EU threats, but rather the AZ scaremongering from Macron and others.
I agree with dmg on this. I hate anti Vaxxers, whether they are heads of state or idiots on Facebook.
Incidentally I had my AZ vaccine two weeks ago and I’m still alive and feeling great.
-
I don't hate Vaxxcers, I hate vaccine ;D
-
imho everyone should get the vaccine.
anti vaxxers should be punished. they play with other people's lives.
but that is just me.

I agree with you. It should be mandatory, especially for care home staff. The only exception should be those who have allergies.

Some people have allergic reactions to certain foods, medicines etc. Also people with certain ailments could be exempt.

Punish and mandate by the grand inquistors Val and Pottel! Misanthropic way of showing the love!

I didn't say punishment. The vaccine is the only way to stop thousands and thousands of people dying unnecessarily from this terrible virus. It is the way to freedom. I do happen to care about what happens to the human race, btw!

Merkel and Macron now turning to Putin for the Russian vaccine because there is little trust in the AZ one after what they've said about it apparently. Now this one has to be approved by the EMA.

There are three actually in distribution and for some reason, the one that is causing controversy for one reason or another is AZ... It's strange you don't hear a thing about Moderna or Pfizer...
AZ is the one that I should have, when they send the vaccines they committed to send. In the meantime, if other are approved, things can go faster! The Johnson's one is promising as only need one shot.

I'm going to get vaccinated with a Russian vaccine this weekend.

AZ came out and said they would be honouring and prioritising UK contracts rather than shipping to EU.
Soon after Macron and Merkel started saying it wasn't safe.

Honestly, i don't mind if I get mine from AZ, Moderna, Pfizer or Johnson, even the Sputnik if it's aproved in Europe, but looks like AZ are playing games here, if they signed a contract they should honour the contract. It's true that we don't really know what they signed but, again, is the only provider causing trouble, or at least that we know they are causing trouble.
I had doubts in the begining that pharmaceutical companies would prioritize helping than making money with the pandemic, and looks like the others are but looks like AZ are having second thoughts...
In fact it's strange the other pharmaceutical companies are not having second thoughts, money is money, and that's why they work, not for helping people, but for making as much money as they can.

The AZ one is apparently going to be sold at cost to developing countries. Pfizer are looking to make money on theirs.
As for contracts I don't know either, but it seems the EU don't want the AZ vaccine anyway. Merkel now only giving it to over 60s (she can have it then :lol).
This whole episode is a disaster for everyone, not just those in the EU; it shouldn't be a them vs us scenario right now. We can still stick together on this despite not being in the country club!

I thought they were honouring the contracts, it's just UK signed deals earlier (about the one decent thing our government has done in the last 12 months).

If there are enough vaccines from the others supliers, don't care about the AZ one. Sadly, there is a need for every shot so the AZ is needed.

I had the AZ one. Hoping to be back at gigs this year. I have Cliff Richard at the RAH in October and Jason Isbell in Amsterdam in November, international travel could still be outlawed though I guess :(

Yeah, maybe inside the UK, gigs of British bands can start before than in other countries as vaccination is going fast , but outside the UK, or bands from outside the UK, I don't think there are going to be gigs until 2022.

also canada backing down from it now.
i am sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle...

AZ IS honouring contracts apparently, EU did not fool proof read it, forgot the exact wording but it was something about no punishment if not delivered in time and stuff.
as far as i understood that particular article that i cannot find back now obviously, AZ did not wrong,...contractually.

The AZ vaccine will not only be sold at cost to developing countries for the small amount of £3.60, but also to the EU and around the world. The Pfizer jab costs £15 per jab and Moderna £28. AZ decided to forgo a £21 billion profit, unlike Pfizer, Moderna etc who will make a huge profit.

yes, that's the theory, but already happened that AZ was telling they don't have enough vaccines to send to the UE, and they were sending a lot to countries outside the UE because they get paid more... many shipments of AZ vaccines outside the UE had been blocked because apparently they can't supply the UE, but they have no problems sending them to countries that pay more.
AZ is very suspicious of strange manouvres, so it's like they want to pretend they are not making that huge profit, but at the back they try to.
At least, that's what the media says, which we know might be not entirely true, but however, you only listen of that kind of manouvres from AZ.

For example:
https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/profit-before-people-astrazeneca-charging-sa-more-than-double-what-eu-pays-for-covid-19-vaccine/
I think you will agree these are very cheap even at twice the price compared to other vaccines.
AZ are not making any profit at all, in fact their share price has plummeted because of the present row.
Also:

Spanish radio and tv, logically.
Most specifically, A Punt tv, which is the regional tv from where I live, Valencia, because they just give information about facts. The national tv news programs are all influenced by political ideologies and their information is very affected by opinions more than facts, so I avoid them, same with newspapers.
