I always wanted to learn Mark’s song “Imelda” from his debut solo album. And after numerous vain attempts over the years, it finally seems to “click” for me, hopefully. I just learned it today and want to share my raw feelings about this song. And I’ll need to go and heal my fingers thanks to sudden bursts of intense playing. Sometimes I’m not playing for weeks, and sometimes play for hours, it’s incredibly inspiration-driven, and that’s why I destroy my fingers from time to time. But for a good reason! Pavel.

The song for today is "Dream Of The Drowned Submariner". I get a lot of requests to discuss this song, and no wonder why — it has time signature changes, unusual chord voicings, muting, fingerpicking solo, and quirky structure. I have no idea how to do a song like this justice in my format, but hopefully, it's enough information to start with. Some things I forgot to mention. Pavel.

It seems I uploaded my "Redbud Tree" video too fast last time, just a couple of days after Submariner, and the video got neglected and crushed by the infamous algorithm. Hopefully, now the situation will be better. The moral of the story — uploading too often is a bad idea, don't do that. Pavel.

The new solo is from one of Mark's blues songs—"You Can't Beat The House." While the chord structure is primitive, as blues should be, the solo is the complete opposite. Quite challenging, in fact. Lots of muting, tricky bends, two types of rakes, fast runs in triplets, a trill, and everything in between. Good luck! Pavel.

And if I remember well, that song was a first take. As an amateur drummer I recognised a few things that when playing a first take you change suddenly to fit with the music, a change, the bridge etc

Sure, the song's structure has Mark's turn to it, but the chords are still your typical blues! Thanks for the link.

Don't know about Mark's remark on "take one". It surely feels genuine. What bothers me is the absolutely perfect playing by Mark, these solos... It's interesting was it comped or played completely live? But if anything I learned doing this project is Mark is THAT good. I don't think he would leave such an epic behind-the-scenes thing on the album if it wasn't genuine. How else are you gonna prove it was really take one?

Never understood what MK mumbled at the start lol, but I got that feeling from Ianto drums, a few things here and there that are very tipical you do when trying to quickly adapt to a change or trying something that suddenly come to you as more natural that what you were doing.

MK is, or was at that time, good enough to improvise a solo like that full of things of high quality.
