Title: Hotel thread London
Post by: ingridswing on September 05, 2012, 09:48:41 AM
Hi all,

In the next two messages you will find the offer of the two hotels. It's unfortunately not cheap, expensive area and a busy week due to European Bankholiday (except Netherlands at least, we have a bankholiday the week before).

Let me know as fast as possible what you choose, I will make a poll, so please wait with responding untill you see the three messages (this one plus 2 offers) and the poll.

There's another option and that's rely on booking.com and book the Copthorne Tara Hotel  London Kensington. It's now on non refundable rate for the nights of May 26th till May 28th (so 3 night) for 265,50 pounds. It's the cheapest one so far. But no guarantees how long this non refundable rate will stay.

Please please please: respond fast so we can decide today.

IBIS: Pre-payment only 14 days prior to arriva
Price 99 to 119 pound per night
        Breakfast Included

Mercure: Prepayment when booking
Price 90 to 105 pound per night
               Breakfast excluded

Copthorne Tara: Prepayment when booking
Different price, can be sold out soon says booking.com
                           Breakfast excluded

First of all THANK YOU Ingrid for contacting hotels and trying to get fans in the same hotel!
It must be a lot of work arranging things like this!  :-*

I choose for the Ibis Earl's Court hotel, but as always in cases like this the Copthorne Tara might be as good as well! ......I don't mind!  ;D

I hope we soon will know what to do, because I need to book for a few extra nights and don't want to wait too long!
Especial not because many hotels are already sold out!

Stupid question maybe, but:

Do I really have to book soo early, I mean 8 months before the show? I would have thought of making decisions in early 2013... Tried to book a night in Cologne for the July show but wasn't successful, not yet possible online...

LOL LE ! Just like you I thought I had time enough, but being curious to the hotels I have been searching for some
of them in the Kensington area and guess what!!! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/Grinsmiley.gif)  ......I searched through booking.com and some of them are already sold out! Well they are expensive hotels nearby the RAH
and I wouldn't choose them, but knowing it will be Bank Holliday it can get busy there! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/confused01-1.gif)

Of course London is a big city and there must be hundreds of hotels at other parts of the city where you can
order a hotel room, but .......I am looking forward to meet some fans! It will be a little vacation for Jans and me
and during the day we both will be busy visiting beautiful places, but if the fans meet in the evening in the hotel
then that would be wonderful! (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/Fieneke2/Emoticons/Grinning.gif)

My experience, the sooner you book the better prices are. That's also what Binone says.
There are plenty of hotels in London, and sure you will find something later on.

What I did so far is booking 1 nonrefundable at half the normal price. So I paid that one already.
Some hotels on booking.com which can be cancelled up to 1 or 2 days before. Have to pay when I am there.
And I also booked the Copthorne Tara for Knopflerized and me. This can be cancelled but will cost one night penalty. They already took one night from the creditcard, the rest of the money I have to pay when I am there.

With concerts I like to be in the neighbourhood of the venue to be able to have some afterconcertdrinks and walk to the hotel.

So it seems everyone will go their own way. I will let the hotels know that we don't want to use their offer.

By the way Fieneke: if booking.com doesn't have rooms anymore it's not always the case that the hotel doesn't have rooms anymore. But i's a busy week and especially to the end of that week it will be busy in London.

Yes Fieneke, I'm booked into the Copthorne Tara too and I booked through their own web site.  It was also a little cheaper than booking.com so check it out if you want to.

Well, I'll try, Knopflerized!

Le Chat = Die Katze
le guitare = Die Gitarre

 ;) I think that's all you need?

I have completed my Hotel booking now, too. I chose the same Hotel as Superval, the Premier Inn, Earl's Court, arriving on Sunday, departing on Tuesday. So I will use the Sunday for sighseeing maybe and checking out the  nearer distance and after a hopefully damn good sleep I will be ready to meet everyone on Monday somewhere near the RAH!

Two nights with breakfast 183 GBP, (would be 230 Euro today). I guess it will not get very much cheaper having in mind that it is pretty close to the RAH - 1 mile as Val said... (if you gonna walk a mile in them... )
I can cancel the order until the day of arrival. And have to pay at the check-out. Seems all very safe and sensible to me. Plus the breakfast menu looks good!  ;)

All of you are very experienced with these London hotels, and I've never been east of the Mississippi River in the USA.   Need a little hand holding, please.    Ingrid, you have done a tremendous amount of work.     I'd like to stay at whichever hotel you and the majority of the group may be staying.      Love to be close to Phil, Matt, Nelly, Slavi.   and of course more of you.    Who could name everyone?   What is  your best recommendation, Ingrid.     I do NOT want to get cold feet on this.    :)

Really strange how they gave a higher rate as our eventrate than we can book online at their site or at booking.com

In the Netherlands if you ask for an eventrate you get some proper rate:
Last time I spent a night in The Hague. Very nice 4star-hotel, around the corner of the congrescentre.
Normal rate at that hotel:

If some of you are still looking for reasonable accommodation, you may try travelodge: http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/340/London-Central-City-Road-prev-Moorgate-hotel

You still get rooms for 29,95, breakfast excluded. But don't expect any luxury. Old Street to Royal Albert Hall is a journey of approximately 40 minutes by tube.

Hi Justme, earlier we discussed the nonrefundable booking at Travelodge. It's not in a good financial position, so I didn't dare however normally  I always stay there. Marylbone I went in a few times. Travelodge is really ok. You have a bed and shower and toilet and it's clean, so all you need. But be careful with nonrefundable bookings nowadays

40 mins in The Underground is a long way away and at that distance with their pricing scheme is probably in a different "zone."  Locals will know more about this than me, but from my visits to London this means you'll not be able to use things like Oyster Cards and travel becomes expensive.

Looks like a real long travel...

There are plenty of decent B&B in the Victoria/Pinlico, Russell Square or even around Kensington with decent prices like to travel so long...

I will try to search a B&B in the same underground line that the RAH, South Kensington, so the ride will be faster, or at least easier.

Hotels I usually stay in have been on Cromwell Road (Copthorne Tara this time).  Radisson Vanderbilt and Premier Inn are the two I've tried before, Radisson being the better but a little more expensive.  I don't think there is that much in it though so it's worth checking it out.

From these you can easily walk to/from the RAH.  They are also within walking distance to Knightsbridge area with Harrods etc.

Thanks for the input so far. As I understand, travelodge will withdraw the money the moment you check-in. So this should be safe. I cannot imagine, that travelodge will go bust. Perhaps there is a bit too big to fail in it?!

It's situated in TFL Zone 1, so even with a daily travelcard you are safe.

Last time I was at the Travelodge Old Street everything was ok. The saying you get what you pay for isn't always true if you go to London. Btw, the Hoxton is another hotel I'd like to try the next time I'm in town. Very good critics.

But the journey from this travelodge to the RAH really sucks, this time I'll try a taxi.

Country Bumkin that I am, I will be happy if the way back to the Hotel after the show will not turn out to be an adventure - London is another dimension as let's say our German large cities.... So you very easy underestimate distances and range.... When Superval wrote that the Premier Inn is within an easy walking distance (1 mile) to the RAH, that was crucial. Not that one cannot get lost on a one-mile-walk as well...  :lol

I am always in for a cheaper solution, but balancing a good night sleep, not too complicated way back and even nice company, the expense is alright with me!  :)
They seem to have very good beds!!

Well, I always analyse this according to logistics... Usually I choose my hotel near the train station I will use to come and leave London, and that is linked with the airport as well, and with my flights schedule.

Normally, unless you choose zone 2 or further, any areas with easy links to the South Kensington line are perfect.
