Availabe as MP3 Amazon download
-
Really? A complete song? :o Do you have a link?
-
Not on amazon UK, yet.
-
This is great! But kinda ridiculous at the same time. How many more hidden gems like this?
-
http://www.mark-knopfler.info/news/2009/09/a-new-non-album-track-time-in-the-sun/ includes sample, click to Amazon widget
-
What do I read there? 14 track amazon download? :o I think they didn't count the songs, two bonus songs makes 13..
-
Amazon says it will be available on the 15th.
-
Early Bird is there too, probably better to buy it from Amazon rather than iTunes, no DRM and MP3 format.
-
Oh, and I may be wrong, difficult to tell, but female backing vocals on this one?
-
The backing vocals are done by the guys themselves. It's on the DVD (recording backing vocals). ;)

That's what I was thinking...until I found a certain FLAC download link. I think it's fairly funny that a lossless version emerged for free, while the song is only being sold as an mp3. Was heavy drinking involved in developing the new MK Inc. marketing plan? ;)
-
Oh man, that snippet sounds so good!
-
Hm nice flowing guitar work, but this sample seems to be a little bit repetitive. Nevertheless I'm glad that more songs see the light of the day.
Very strange is that I can't find it at amazon Germany.

You have to switch the search option over to "MP3 Downloads" on top in the drop down menu. But even if you do that, it doesn't seem to be there.

Well, I guess that's because of one of those people who like to talk about the amount of music they have in TeraBytes and convert everything to FLAC (even the crappy bootleg recordings!). As long as every song of about 5 minutes takes over 30 MB on your hard disk, there is a chance you beat everyone. ;D It's something with "size" and "matters". ;)
Time In The Sun sounds good to me, can't wait to hear the complete song! :D

Thanks for the hint, but that doesn't work for amazon.de. Maybe they'll add the bonus song next week.

Oh? And where did you read that?
I saw you wrote above that "FLAC is pretty useless", and without attempting to insult you, I think that's just about the most misguided statement I've read here in a long time. FLAC is for people who enjoy lossless audio- who don't appreciate the atrocious sound of an mp3, or should I say "empty3s". :P
-
Lossless audio is of course better than an Mp3 (even a 320 kb/s), that's true. But seen the fact that (most of) the recordings which are available on the internet (such as bootlegs) are of relatively bad quality themselves, it is pretty useless to make them even bigger. A bad recording doesn't sound much better when converted from WAV to FLAC. Actually every conversion decreases the quality of the recording. Probably, the FLAC which is circulating on the internet is a conversion of the 256 kb/s Mp3: the chance that someone could get a good quality (lossless) audio file (for example an original CD) of Early Bird is close to zero. Pumping up the size of a 256 kb/s Mp3 doesn't automatically increase the quality, only size. You can't create what isn't there with digital audio, that's my point. :)
-
Where can I hear the snippet? On knopfler-info I can

Yes, I know, but in this case the FLAC download of Early Bird was actually lossless. I checked it in Adobe Audition.

Let's not forget, the individual who released this particuar file has official links to MK, so entirely possible.
As for your comments about all these "bad quaility" bootlegs, well just stick around here for a while, "watch and learn son, watch and learn." ;)

If you follow the first link, it says that you can buy the song for $ 0,99. It seems that you can buy the single song (which is, of course great!). :)

I havn't tried it yet, but can you buy 'Early Bird' & 'Time In The Sun' NOW as an Amazon $0.99 mp3 download?
Cheers BBB
-
Perhaps not
1) The release date in US - September 15
2) The digital download at Amazon US is avialable for US resindents with US IP address. I think so
-
If you click further, it shows that the songs are not available (yet). I guess we have to wait two more days.
-
OMG they're kidding us all! :o ;D What's that? the mighty treasure hunt? ??? ;D
I think I'll wait to download till Christmas, so I'll have probably all the 25 unreleased tracks. ::) ;D

Of course 13. Sorry, it is my mystake, a lot of versions....

Oh ! I thought Time in the Sun was one of the three tracks on the deluxe set, but apparently it's yet another track hidden away somewhere other than on the album itself. I wonder how many other tracks will turn up on the Japanese version.
I don't know why they didn't just release the album with all 16 tracks on and be done with it and save all this scraping about. I'm sure they would have all fit onto one CD.

And again the funny thing is that you can

However this "country restictions" will ruin the whole thing. Imagine the offering of those extra tracks as a way to explore the posibilities of release all those songs that never make the records, due to the country restrictions, many many people won

I tried to buy the mp3 but got this answer :The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently available only to US customers located in the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia.
If anyone from the US has bought the file please PM me.
-
"Time In The Sun" is now available at Amazon.
You can buy mp3s from Amazon US from abroad if you use a proxy and then buy yourself the cheapest gift certificate ($5).
For some reason you can't use foreign credit cards for mp3s, but you can buy the certificates with the same credit card. You'll need to register a new account with a U.S. address...so just make one up (but get a matching zip code for whichever state you choose). Then buy yourself a gift certificate and have it sent to the email address you registered with (it should arrive almost immediately). Go to your "account" and credit the certificate to your account. Finally, fire up a proxy to make Amazon think you're in the States and buy the two bonus songs. I can't say it will work for everyone, but it worked for me.
I feel better knowing I've paid for the tracks.

I understand what you are saying, but take a look at you solution: I am not gonna use a proxy and buy a $5 gift certificate for just one song.
I have allready bought the Deluxe box and Early Bird from iTunes.
If they make Time In The Sun also available on iTunes then I will buy it there, but I just don't like this marketing strategy.
I have mailed them for Early Bird and this was the answer they gave me back then: As far as I understand, this was an exclusive iTunes bonus for 'Get Lucky' and won't be available elsewhere.
They are just not thinking with the fans that wants to have it all.
-
I see your point, but it was only a suggestion.
I know I'll use the remaining $3 sooner or later, so I'm fine with it...but I totally agree about the strategy, it's a shame they're doing this.
-
I think of this all as very strange! It looks management is getting greedy. Cannot imagine MK really knows a lot about this all. He must have made enough money for the next generations to not worry about a couple of thousand times
-
JUst tried to buy the song with the same result:
We are sorry...
We could not process your order. The sale of MP3 Downloads is currently available only to US customers located in the 48 contiguous states, Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
I even tried with an US billing adress searched in internet, but I guess they detected my IP
No sense, I

How the music industry turns loyal custumer into pirate?
Simple : they use their old marketing dirty tricks.
Industry want to deny that WWW is for World Wide Web. They are protectionist minded on an open market, so their commercial strategy is anything but promised to fail.
For my part, to date I decided NOT to buy the album. I will wait for a "budget" version if it is ever put out.
-
I'd be a happy recipient if anyone from the US would like to send me the Mp3s of the 2 bonus tracks. ;) :-* :)

Agreed! It has become absurd. I wonder who is responsible for the Itunes and amazon distribution affairs? PCM, or Universal?
-
The mp3 is out there. And apparently, unlike Early Bird in Europe (?), Time in the Sun is not being released in a lossless format on iTunes USA.
That's just silly IMO, and the lack of information about any of this on the "official site" is pathetic.
-
Just cannot understand this You can have this. You can't have that method of merchandising. >:(

bewildering? farcical? pathetic? How to define this commercial policy?
but maybe you, in the USA, can have this and that ;D

Hmmmm. I tried too. No MP3 for me... >:(

So need one forum member from the States who can buy me this song ;D

I can't download it either from Amazon ofcourse, but I was listening to the 30 sec. sample on www.what-it-is.nl and it turned out to be the complete song! :D So I recorderd it on my computer ;D The song is beautiful :)

I've never known a mess like this where there are different tracks exclusively available to different countries. I really don't see the point of it. It just causes frustration and resentment.
It wouldn't be so bad if they also made them available to all centrally through the official site store, but no....that would be too easy.

This whole debacle smacks of iTunes and Amazon demanding `something extra` for their own promotional purposes. If this is true then Early Bird and Time In The Sun may never have seen the light of day at all. Either MK and/or management didn`t have the negotiating power to say `no` or maybe he didn`t care in the end? As many folks have commented, i can`t imagine MK devising all this himself, its just crazy.
Obviously we the fans care and none of the above explains the Boxset 3 song bonus choice. It could have been a whole lot more, outtakes, live stuff etc. (sorry wrong thread)
But there you go, my hunch is we have Early Bird because of iTunes.
I bet we`ll get Time in the Sun because of Amazon.
???
-
I just have to throw in I really like this song. Yes there's that metallic "twang twang" sound again and it has a strange 60's feel but I like it.
-
To me it looks like an unfinished song, although the first listening was kinda "Is this a joke?" :o
I like to know as much songs as I can, but this one its not very good, imho ;)

Agree, it's not really sophisticated and it does sound unfinished but still the melody is stuck in my head :)

Millionaire Blues

Well I got early bird thanks to TK's mistake but I will pay for the other one when it becomes available
-
Well, I've now heard Time In The Sun and to be honest I wouldn't have been bothered if it hadn't been released. Nice 12 string from Richard but otherwise pretty crap.
-
As it turns out, iTunes is going to "release" Time in the Sun as well. But only on 9/22. And you have to buy the whole album with the bonus track- you can't just buy the single track. Terms and conditions may apply. Not applicable to residents of Hawaii or Alaska. Offer ends 9/23. Bwahaha...the MK Inc. machine never ceases to amaze me.
-
They already losed time with this crap thing of country restrictions, many people won

Now at Amazon.de

Available in the next few weeks? Damn, the illegal downloads are everywhere... ::)
-
I've listened to Time in the Sun a few times now and it's certainly an under-developed song. That said, I really like it. I find it a bit surprising since Mark's slow stuff bores me to tears sometimes these days, but there is an interesting, low-down feel to this one. It could have been great with some more guitar and if developed. Better than Hard Shoulder.
-
Not better than Hard Shoulder. :)

In 2000 Sailing to Philadelphia had "Do America" on the USA release and "Matinee" on the UK release.

I know this is a very old thread but I wanted to ask, specially to our British forumers...
Does this song has any meaning that I cant get?
Everybody wants their time in the sun...
Looks childish to me, but I
-
Very good question - cannot remember that I have ever seen this thread before, so:
Try Try Try no cigar
time in the sun
Pull over here get out of the car
time in the sun
Time In The Sun.
-
Yes, thats why I meant with my post...
Early bird had a very clear meaning, it was about Simon Cowell being in MTV
-
I think that the meaning is about enjoying life. We like to be outdoors in a sunny day. The fresh air, blue sky, and warm sun make us feel good. That is the literal meaning. "Time in the sun" is a metaphor for being in a good place, when you are happy, when life is going well, when people appreciate you and recognize your worth as a person.
-
And what about the Try Try Try No Cigar?
-
Lol, my 2 yr old post here is almost exactly the same as my recent post on the new Amazon bonus song - glad to see I'm consistent!
-
Try Try Try No Cigar is not exactly how I know it here in California, but it probably means about the same. Here it is "Nice try, but no cigar." It means you tried hard, but nothing came of it. You did what you could, but no reward.
-
Thank you, IrisRose, for explaining!
So the song could indeed could be as dull and lo-fi as I had the impression on the first sight! :lol :lol

I'm happy to help. Any time. :)

Thank you IrisRose, I always thought it has something to do with his effort of no-smoking anymore ;D . I read he was a heavy smoker some times ago ... Great forum, where I can improve my english, too :)
-
From my point of view, it's clearly about success, alas "time in the sun". The cigar mentioned would be missing out on getting to smoke the winner's cigar when one has achieved whatever one has set out to do. But it's a dark song really, since no one will get his/her time in the sun wherever the song takes place since there are no chances (getting "no ball" or something like that). One interpretation of this would be from a working class perspective, though it's really open.
-
The backing vocals are done by the guys themselves. It's on the DVD (recording backing vocals). ;)
I agree that the backing vocals are by the guys in the band but I thought the video was just playback, no?

dmg, thanks a lot. If I can PM you with something interesting too, let me know.
By the way, I see in this thread a lot of the complaints we have now about the extra tracks, the bonus material at the deluxe boxes and the pricing. (I joined 5 months later and even though I have tried to catch up, I missed this one)
Maybe after all , we have our share of responsibility, but we are on the dark side of this deal as well.

Maybe after all , we have our share of responsibility, but we are on the dark side of this deal as well.
I never giveth to receive, especially to a friend. Thanks for the offer. ;)
