David Gilmour praises Mark Knopfler influence
« on: May 03, 2024, 10:16:40 AM »
Hi,
I searched and did not see it here, so sorry if it has been up before. It was online 27 of April 2024.
Gilmour praises Knopfler for doing especially the first album which he find one of the all time greatest. Nice gesture from another master.

Nice, thank you!
Isn't it unbelievable? The great Gilmour, at the height of his career in the the late 70s, wanting to steal licks from newcomer MK?  :lol

It would be interesting to hear what Mark thinks about Pink Floyd, has he ever mentioned them?
Knopfler, Oldfield and Gilmour is all the guitar I need.

he mentionned Gilmour in this magazine

"I've played with him before, but we haven't recorded together. I like his intonation, there's always a swampy, bluesy quality to the sound of his stratocatser, but also a crystalline quality at the same time that's more in line with my personal sound. What I also like about Dave is the way he plays, hovering around the central melody, which he rarely tackles head-on; it's the mark of a great guitarist."

I don't know.

But I remember journalists saying that songs Brothers in arms and fade to black had a floydish flavour

I can't remember any explicit mention, but any guitarplayer would have been massively influenced by Pink Floyd in the 60s and 70s. They  met and have worked together sporadically (e.g. Princes Trust, French and Saunders etc.), and these days the even look very much alike  :lol
"Broken Bones" is certainly an indirect compliment to David, same as "I dug up a diamond" is a nod to Don Felder and Joe Walsh. I just love it when he picks up other people's styles  :)

Broken Bones to David ?  :hmm

I find it more to JJ Cale...  :think
