Title: (3) Smart money
Post by: jbaent on January 30, 2024, 11:37:30 AM
Smart Money   4:27

The Santa Ana's been kicking up sand
All the way from Utah to La La Land
Sways the fairy lights up in the boughs
The finger-lickers who test the blow
And make predictions for best in show
Say the smart money ain't on your dog now
Ain't on your dog now

Cinderella's in the square
They wait in line to see her there
This little tootsie, she's showing 'em how
Fresh out of fame school class
This little hoofer means to kick some ass
And the smart money ain't on your dog now
Ain't on your dog now

Helicopters overhead
Showbiz kids are getting wed
They already sold the shoot
The ring going on her finger
The slipper on her foot

Down on the river, the wind's turned cool
It's blowing all the way from Boston to Liverpool
At least the summer knows when to take a bow
Groovy nights and golden days
Feel they could might just slip away
And the smart money ain't on your dog now
Ain't on your dog now

Perhaps about earning a buck or two on a Covid vaccine?

Or maybe an advertisement for bitcoins?

It will be country swing :)

"Smart Money, one of the album’s best tracks – a soft lilt that sprinkles a melody like summer rain landing on a porch roof. The pedal steel in the middle and the accompanying piano sweeten the pot, but it’s the lyrical hook that makes this one an earworm: “The smart money ain’t on your dog now.”

Reading this lines one wonder if this is going to be the next track to be released in advance of the new record... still more than a month!

Why Smart Money?

Because the review says it's one of the album`s best tracks. It's time to show a best track indeed!

I think we will officially know the third song before the album's release.

Of course, again I don't know how to understand this :think

Probably metaphor but people race dogs and others bet on the winner. So in a literal sense it would be meaning that it seems unlikley that dog will win a race.

But I don't expect it to be literal. :)

Metaphor... are everywhere:) Thank you Dusty.

In this context, I remembered the song Punish The Monkey.

Sounds a bit like Oldest surfer on the beach with a few Why worry licks. Nice!

I think the guitar lick here is very similar to Southside Tenements by his brother, the famous David Knopfler...

That's what I understand, too. Some ageing (rock-)star perhaps?
He's turning around to find that there are young stars (some Cinderella in this case) who'll do anything to become famous ("fresh out of fame school class", ready to sell even their wedding photo), and they're way more popular that him now, because he's gone out of fashion (=people don't want to pay money for him anymore). He can feel the cold wind of reality blowing (he is no longer "the best in show") and realises he should've stopped long ago (he didn't know when to take his bow, i.e. say goodbye to showbusiness, unlike the summer, which is ending).

Can someone help please. Listen to the intro. It reminds me of a song. Just some licks. And I can’t say which song 🙄

Yes Border Reiver, that’s it. Just a few licks at the start. But it was the reason it got into my heart immediately. Thanks 😘

Currently my second favourite on the album.

Musically it’s very similar to Across the Borderline by Ry Cooder..

This has really risen to the top of the pack - a beautifully realised song. The piano and slide on this are gorgeous. And Mark's vocal is terrific. From the Lights of Taormina style opening though to Mark's own light guitar parts and small solo - that recurring little dancing riff throughout - the light drum and percussion - the subtle bass. It is such a delight - a perfect amalgam of Mark's solo career in one song.

It reminded me the solo of I’m The Fool starting at 1:40.

I definitely associate this song with My Bacon Roll - both are describing someone struggling to keep up with the changing times. The lesson here from Mark is that you need to accept that things always change

I remember the first words that announced the key of the One Deep River album: stability in the face of change.
