Mark being not the sort of "people events" attracted I wonder if he went there at the asking of his daughter.

I remember reading an interview where Mark told that his kids asked him to accept appearance in Top Gear (I think) and he always refused.

The odds are that he attended the show at the instance of his daughter, she was gonna undergo surgery next day after.
Apparently he felt nervous on her account and was motivated primarily by his fatherly feeling.
