Title: AMIT - DS/MK song Collab - Recording Stage
Post by: Rolo on March 15, 2024, 03:29:46 PM
Quote
Seeing our enthusiasm about the new LH...
Well, here at this forum we got audio engineer, drummers, bass players, keyboard player and a lot of guitar players.

Can we made a collab on a DS/MK song?
Remote recording, nothing fancy, just for fun.
I made a bunch of collabs during the pandemic, it's really fun.

Just put my reply to the LH topic.

How about it?
Lets vote a song and the rest is fun.

I always thought vocal collaborations make more sense, like singing a song in a choir. If you take just 10 people it already sounds like a choir. Here in Russia, we have a group that sings songs of famous Russian singer-songwriters (amazing, amazing songs by the way, I grew up on those), with just a few guitars and a double bass, and 10-15 singers. But it gives each song a unique vibe like it's really people's song now and bigger than any person.

Anyway, it depends on the song, need to brainstorm it. Everything's possible!

I had some insights:

- Can be instrumental version
- Can be sung for more then one
- Extensive instrumental section

Well, i have some suggestions:

Why Worry
Can be a instrumental version or sung as a duet.
If was instrumental, can be done like the LH stuff.
I suggest include the outro part for some guitar improvisations.

Irish Boy
Instrumental
Can be done like the new LH

The Long Road
Instrumental
Can be done like the new LH

Storybook Love
Instrumental
Can be done like the new LH

Sultans
Sung
Every guitar player made one guitar lick during the singed part
The middle solo is made by one guitar player
The final solo made by everyone
Cons: Everybody has played sultans on YT.

Where Do You Thing You're Going
Sung
Long intro
I have an arrengement for the middle solo
Final solo with a lot of improvisation

Six Blade Knife
Sung
Longer intro, solos

All depends from who will be involved.

I’m know one of my kids has a recorder from Primary School somewhere. But in all seriousness it sounds like a cool idea. Be interesting to hear the result.

Do you have an audio interface, a desk and one mic?
Or an audio interface and a keyboard?

Doesn't need to be fancy stuff.

I lean towards Mark's solo stuff (soundtracks included) for some reason, The Long Road is awesome. I know a classical guitar version that is easily as good as the original:

Musicians, if you want to join, please reply and add your name/instrument below:

Pavel - Acoustics/Electric guitars
Rolo - Acoustics/Electric guitars
Julio - shaker
Jean F - Acoustics/Electric guitars?
localhero1986 - Organ/Keyboards?
Dusty - you play the drums, right? Or guitar? or both?

We have a bass player?

Yes I can play/record either Std Strat, Schecter Start, Custom "shorty" with Humbucker, or folk elctroacoustic

National, Nylon Classic or Charango are more difficult to record, because I need a microphone

I play guitar but we have too many guitarists and AMIT doesn’t approve of that so I can add some pedal steel, lap steel or dobro. :)

How about something a bit less obvious. How about TMTS? That would be an interesting choice and lend itself to a broad pallette of instruments

I asked ChatGPT and the answer is as follows:

The Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits song that can be abbreviated as "TMTS" is "Telegraph Road."

After some adjustment and clarification of what I meant, the answer was:

Apologies for the confusion! In that case, the Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits song "TMTS" would be "Twisting by the Pool."

Don't you worry about being a MK impersonate.
I am a part singer too, but i am unable to record decent vocals with my powerfull DAW.

Well, can be a instrumental one too.
If the chosen song will be sung, we can change keys, tempo, anything.

Only thing is that we need to choose a song that can fit all AMITERS.
THE AMITERS, well... good band name.

I would offer a contribution but with my own musical endeavours having fallen somewhat by the wayside over the past year or two, I no longer have the confidence that I could bring anything of a satisfactory quality. And I think it’s fair to say you’ve got enough guitarists in there anyway! So perhaps I’ll leave you all to it.

Very best of luck with it.

I don't have drums, but have a practice pad and brushes, so I can also record some brushes for rythm and also shakers.

I'm not sure if I can add flute as I play by ear, but I will try as well.

What type of file should we send you ?

I bet you need multi-tracks with the guide track to synchronize ?

does it mean that we have to send you 2 files ? one mixed with guide track, and one with only our contribution ?  :think

When I have done these things before, I have recorded the guide track to one track.

Then my contribution to another track.

Then I send the file back, with the guide mixed hard left and my contribution mixed hard right, makes it easy for the person to sync up and just delete the left hand track. :)

I don't which DAW you use, but at least in Reaper it is possible to export a single track in such a way that it is completely "filled up" so that it is always synchronized with the beginning. This means that it is enough to send a track and it will always start at the beginning when you insert the many tracks into a project later - and you will have no problems with synchronization.

Yes Dusty I was thinking doing that way

Tobi777 the problem is that each recording may not start at the same time even with the guide track

I confirm  :)

but I won't have the time til in one or two weeks...

no rush, JF.
The deadline is your article on August 24th.

I believe that a real deadline for the recordings will be May 1st?

Holy cow, I like it more than this Going Home with 69 Guitar Legends... Seriously, beautiful stuff. I'll be hard-pressed to add something valuable to it. But let's see.

thanks, amigo.

You will do an amazing work, i'm sure about it.
This guide track is not the final one, its just for practice.
I will setup the full length soon.

Good question.
You can render your tracks separately.
From 0:00:000 till the end. So i can add one track below the others.
Files in .wav 48000 24bits

You can DM me with the link of your tracks.

Perfect.
I use Reaper.
After that, i will send the files to 2manyguitars and TheTimeWasWrong

Tobi777 the problem is that each recording may not start at the same time even with the guide track

You have two tracks in your DAW - one guide track and your new track.
Even if you start at some point into the guiding track - say at 03:00 - for your solo, you can then export the track in a way which will fill it up with "silence" from the start to your beginning.
So the guy who mixes the different tracks can just import your track and it starts at the right time (with silence, off course, but therefore it is aligned with the beginning).

I haven't listened to the guide track yet but if you have  a click at the start then it's easy to line the files up...

- Viervalen

Acc Guitar/Folk instr:

You guys can 'practice/record/anything you want' along of the track.
After the confirmations, i will edit the final lenght for a proper recording.

The Fabulous Amiters.
Let's do it!
Cheers!

I guess you don't need another guitar player?  ;D
But maybe I can pretend that I know something about mastering.
This point should not be neglected and is still missing from the list

I was thinking in using Audacity but I'm not sure if is going to work as I want, as my idea is plug my zoom digital recorder as a mic, and play the guidetrack in the computer. In my head, audacity will record the guidetrack in one channel and what im playing in another, but I'm not sure if it does it that way or if it mixes both sources in stereo... I would do some tests as I want to record at least two tracks, one for brushes and another for the shaker.

I will work on a proper track now we know all the musicians.
I will add section for all have a individual solo part.

For those who doesn't know how to do it or maybe need a path to follow, i suggest that the recording process in the modes of the LH.
For example:
In my case, i will record elec guitar.
So, i will record:
- track 1: Main theme
- track 2: Interventions on the main theme
- track 3: guitar solo

If everyone does things based on this example, will be easy to fill the track with parts from all musicians.

This is only an example of my process.
You guys can do anything that you want.

I'm sure that will be a huge sucess.
And will be pressed on a half-speed vynil.

And just about the wav vs mp3 thing. If we can do everything in wav files that would be great.  Mp3 is lossy and will effect the overall end product.

Obviously if people cant export their contributions in wav format we can still use it.

Modern studios wouldn't touch MP3 stems they demand the higher quality files!

But whatever we can do guys. Lets just make it as good as it can be  :)

By the way maybe some of you don't know me. My name is Alberto I'm 26 and I live in the north of Spain, Im fairly new around here and I don't tend to post much but I love to read all threads about the different topics. I started playing guitar some years ago and the guitar brought me to MK/DS.

I made the final arrangement (without the KB intro)
All files (wav 24bits 48K) at:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1zzJDq_TkldXhWoStz2GeIb3epn3Au6Wt?usp=drive_link

Feel free to play and record.
Please, when you will share your recordings, please, send the files separately.
To accommodate all players, if necessary, i'll stretch the final track.

This is gonna be great.
Have fun you all!

cheers,
Rolo

Yes.

I'm not doing anything flashy.  I've done a track of the main guitar theme using flange & loads of reverb which could work with another guitar part doubling it and I've done a basic mandolin part (separately) which sounds dreadful on it's own but sounds OK in the mix.

Hi ALL!  :wave

This AMIT - DS/MK song Collab - Recording Stage  project caused me to become very emotional today. To know that we have so many truly enthusiastic and talented individuals that gather here warms the cockles of my heart. Great job! to all of you. One of my all time favorite MK tracks!
First I’ll need to introduce myself to most of you. Health issues have limited the time that I am able to spend online these days. I am known on the A.M.I.T. forum as Shangrila 1. I am one of the foundation members and the minute taker for the hook-ups of the 12 foundation members (listed below) during the infancy of the forum. I still have the transcripts and “Meeting reports” of the 11 international hook ups on a HDD.
I went from being an very active member to just a casual LURKER after 2019 when arthritis took over. Marks’ new record has given me added motivation, Can’t wait to have it in my hands.
To have been a part of the implementation of this forum has been one of the best past times that I have been involved with outside of my family.

We became the A.M.I.T. forum -> “A Mark in Time – The Complete Mark Knopfler DATABASE” during the 2nd meeting on 11th March 2007

EDITORS MEETING number 2   GMT 22:30 Sun    11th March 2007
It was previously agreed and accepted that not all editors could be present for every meeting. However - SIX members are needed as minimum number for Voting, purposes.

 ;)

That's obviously the "right" way to do it if it was a normal studio scenario, but I was concerned that all the contributions might sound quite similar if everyone sends in a dry stem. I was assuming that the contributors to Going Home must have added some FX to "make it their own"

I'm happy to re-record without reverb if you would rather apply it to the whole mix rather than individually.

Great to have you back Shangri La, I hope you are as well as you can be.

Interesting you have the transcripts. But would be funny to hear what I thought would be a better name :)

Hi there!

For those who don't have much experience doing remote recordings, here comes some tips for export the tracks.

For Guitar Players, of course.

If you are recording guitar using VSTs like Amplitube, BIAS or similars, when you will export a track, please, turn off the reverb and then render the track. You can leave the Delays and modulations as your taste.

If you are recording using Multi-effects like Fractal, Boss GT, Helix, Kemper... If you can record in two channels (dry/wet) you can send me both in separate tracks.
If you use a little reverb and modulations, send me the files as that way you record.

If you are recording analog, send me the files as you have recorded.
If you can record dry, better. If not, no problem.

I will assume the Musical Direction and i'll choose the parts from all guitar players (acoustics and electrics) and then i will send the tracks to 2manyguitars and Tobi777 for the final mix/master.

This is gonna be GREAT.

As for the drums, I don't any straightforward access to the studio right now so I can do it in two-ways: a) to record on my electronic kit through computer, b) to record my acoustic drumkit with a Zoom H4n Pro recorder. I'll try to do both and see what better fits the project :)

As for the drums, I don't any straightforward access to the studio right now so I can do it in two-ways: a) to record on my electronic kit through computer, b) to record my acoustic drumkit with a Zoom H4n Pro recorder. I'll try to do both and see what better fits the project :)

That's fine.
No rush.

Hi Rolo For my part on electric I´ll record analog just with a subtle reverb but I can record it totally dry if you prefer. I was wandering if we can record freely as much as we want and the you choose wich part is used. If so it will be ok to record a couple of run throughs the verse, middle section and some soloing, also the outro arpeggiated part Correct me if Im wrong Its my first online musical project and I want to do it great :) Cheers.

Hi there.
No problem with your reverb.
You can record with the tone that you like.
Yes, you can record freely all along the track.
If you will record separate takes, no prob.

Do what will make you happy.
I'm sure will be great.

Cheers!

Thank you, very interesting. So why is Pottel always implying that he founded AMIT alone on his own? Did I miss something? History becomes legend, legend becomes myth?    :lol ;D

Hi LE  :wave
Nice to interact with you again. Used to love our chats! Yes, a saying MK once used in an interview may well describe our wonderful leader:- A benevolent dictator?
Only kidding Pottel! We needed your steady hand to get through those heady days. 12 get a lifer's from all corners of the globe in widely different time zones trying to put together a viable coherent and enjoyable place for MK DS fans to share their talents, thoughts loves and admiration of Marks talents.

I remember very well the day when I discovered AMIT, back in 2009... I hadn't heard anything about the idea and the new forum but detected that almost all regulars had left MKNews.. it was very nice to meet you all again.

It was shortly before the Get Lucky campaign started. Quite unbelievable that it was 15 (!) years ago..

Ha ha!

I'm sure Pottel never meant to imply that ;)

Great to have you back Shangri La, I hope you are as well as you can be.

Interesting you have the transcripts. I was just chatting with someone, can't remember who, about the fact that I voted against the amit name (it still doesn't make sense!) but was outvoted and just went along with that as that's how democracy works. But would be funny to hear what I thought would be a better name :)

Also funny that BPD was in the founding group, hoo mama!
Yes Dusty you were a great steadying influence to the forum Editor group. I still have transcripts for all but 2 meetings (which Man on a track did the minutes for)
You were on Maternity leave during meetings 2 and 3, so missed the discussion, and vote on the "Name" and best suited URL for the forum.
Still follow your participation as a "Lurker" though!

I just had a gap in my busy family life and recorded brushes and shaker, and sent it to Rolo.

Hope he can use it in the mix, hehehe

Rolo,

What's your preferred method for sending you the .wav files?  I don't have an on-line location you could upload them from.

I know its a cop-out but I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to technology.  I don't have any cloud storage.
I hadn't even heard of WeTransfer until you mentioned it - I'll check it out, but then I'd still need Rolo's email address.

You can send a WeTransfer to yourself and copy the URL and send it to Rolo, which is what I did.

Hello fellas!

You guys are recording your stuff?
I'm asking because Mr. GF is on my heels asking for a deadline.
He has a tight schedule to mix/master our project. ;)

I received parts from:
Julio, Aidan, Witek, Tobias and Chris

I still intend to, it's just a question of finding the time. I don't have my recording gear set up all the time and assembling it all is the bit that will take me the longest. :)

What are you needing Rolo?
I might be able to do some backround "atmosphere" keyboards/synth to fill in here and there (or possibly extend my guitar part).

note: I muted my electric parts and there is no kb intro.

I'm afraid I must leave the project....

last time I used my TonelabSt as audio soundboard it worked, but it was some years ago... (even a decade...)

now it seems the ASIO driver doesn't work anymore. And my old computer is still in Windows 7...
I downloaded the asio driver from Vox site, but it doesn't work with Audacity
I installed Reaper. It doesn't work neither

I downloaded the asio4all driver. Reeaper sees it, but it doesn't see my TonelabSt

I don't have other soundboard/gear to record...
And I don't have much time to search for other solutions...

so sorry, but I won't be able to record some stuff

have fun and make a great project !

Oh no!
If you want, you can record it analogue with a microphone and headphones.
Then, you put the files into the Reaper and cut them to fit at the bars.
If you don't have much time, you can record a ryhythm acoustic guitar using headphones and a smartphone to record.
BOSS have a good app for recording acoustics using the phone's mic.

I would still like to participate but I'm extremely busy with one thing or another at the moment so I realise I may miss out if you guys just want to get it finished!

Deadline is August.
Come on, Dusty.
We want you!  ;D
