Delicious! :P
Love the part "S’cuse me, s’cuse me" and there's a very tasty solo too. ;) Which guitar is it, the Strat? Sounds a bit different but it's not the LP or Pensa (I think anyway).

Sounds Strat like... Good little track that is growing on me the more I hear it...
Could be a grower, but the lyrics are a bit off the wall. Nice guitar solo. :)

The more I'm listening to this the more I like it and I don't really know why! Perhaps just the overall tone of it and feelings it gives me. I have images of greasy spoon cafés and Rita Tushingham kitchen sink 60s films (The Leather Boys perhaps)! Really love this one.

You just reminded me of Mr Tushy. He had a grocers shop at the end of our street in Liverpool. We went there for his cheese and freshly sliced bacon from the big red bacon slicer. Sometimes Rita was in the shop! ;D

Wow! Such a great and unmistakable actress of the 1960s. Loved her in many films, most memorably The Knack and of course her landmark role A Taste of Honey.

It's the song about that "man out of time in a greasy spoon". He lost his job?

Yes it is indeed. I like it more and more.
I just need a good explanation for that ridiculous title lyrics. I mean ... imagine Baloney Again the way it was recorded but with .. "baloney Sandwich again..
Hey man..". It's just... :hmm
I had the idea that he maybe got fired very shortly before and is still in shock and finds himself at thst place but the world around him goes normally on while he has suffered a big catastrophe of losing his job... that would explain the absurd contrast (to me) ... Also the outro would perfectly musically describe to me the slow realisation what happened...
But "I never got the elbow".. So he went on his own?
Hmm... help appreciated.

It's curious that this song has the most silly sounding title but arguably the most thought provoking lyrics thus far.
This verse tells us he gave his job up ("slung it in"):
I never got the elbow
I slung it in
Had it up to here
I just pulled the pin
Went and had a beer
JF, please, or Rail King, is this song faded out actually or ud it from the broadcast?
What instrument is doing this strumming? Sounds absolutely new and great to me.

Suprised to so many positive reactions to this one, after listening to it for the first I was thinking this must be the weakest song ever by MK. Silly title and lyrics (though maybe I am missing something), simple and predictable melody, the first ‘my roll’ in the chorus is too high for Mark’s register giving an uncomfortable feeling, and after the song finishes it starts up again leading to absolutely nothing interesting and quickly fades out again.
On the other hand, the guitar tone and middle solo are quite nice I have to admit.

This is another MK gem - this is what he does best lyrically, something that seems quite basic on the surface but actually has a lot of depth to it. Terrific song.

Personally I don't care how great this song is lyrically speaking. It's ridiculous to name the song "My Bacon Roll", it sounds like a working title at best. You know that the song "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney had a working title "Scrambled Eggs"? I can't believe Mark produces such a ridiculous titles and puts it on the main album.
Oh, I'm sorry, "negative" comments are prohibited here on AMIT. I'm so sorry, really, I never meant to say it. The album is great! My Bacon Roll is my favourite MK song now :lol From the man who wrote Brothers In Arms, feast you eyes on My Bacon Roll! :lol
The title is perfect for the emotion in the song - the feeling and position of the character.
I woke up this morning with "scuse me, scuse me, my bacon roll" going around in my head! I love the song, but it just seems strange that such a pretty song is about a bacon roll! :)
Don't know honestly what you can find SO appealing in this song, seems like it took Mark 1 hour in the morning to write it. He can do better.
I never got the elbow - didn’t get sacked
I slung it in - I quit my job
Had it up to here - he’s had it up to his neck
I just pulled the pin - ACTUAL meaning = uncouple train by pulling the pin - If you pull the pin, you put an end to something, quit or resign.
I used to love a bit of folding - slang for a roll of folding money
Just for getting by - surviving
As pie and mash - Shepard's pie = meat pie and mashed potato
S’cuse me, s’cuse me - pardon me, EXcuse me
My bacon roll? - A favourite breakfast (takeaway or cafe) in UK - in Oz it’s Egg & bacon with red or brown SAUCE
I could order you a toastie - a more recent breakfast brunch favourite toasted sandwich
Brown or red? - SAUCE
I'm torn on whether the protagonist is now working and customers are saying "where's my roll?", while he reminisces about folding money and a former career awash with team building exercises.

He's the one asking for his roll and the last verse, "I could order you a toastie..." is someone else addressing him. But that makes less sense?
This is a vague story. Wish there were just a few clues to give me a Ragpickers Dream type tale!

I think he's the waiter and he's explaining to a customer, maybe someone who he knows, why he's now working in the cafe. He left his job voluntarily, he didn't get the elbow, because he was tired of all the team building etc and was outside of his comfort zone - he is much more comfortable working in the cafe. The customer asks where is his bacon roll and he is offered, as an alternative, a toastie.

When I feel like a using a dad joke, i often ask a cashier if they "still accept cash?" - usually provokes confusion, a minor smile and then rolling of the eyes from my wife.

Could it be possible that the bacon roll is also a metaphor as in to bring home the bacon and a roll of money?

Rather than reading all the back and forth here in depth - I spent yesterday listening to the ten songs I have several times over. It was great to do. Currently, I think that My Bacon Roll is a lovely song - I find it very moving actually - lyrically and musically strong and memorable. I find the same with Trapper Man, Just a Boy Away From Home and One Song at a Time - love those four - then Floating Away and Drover's Road, which I haven;t heard as much and which the qulsity is not quite as good, really came through strongly too - that makes 6 songs I love or really like....plus Nobody's Child is pretty good too. Nobody Does That is not bad actually - it is not by sort of thing - not music I like really - but it is very well done actually. And Dancefloor gets worse with every listen - I hate that - and GOYS is ok - not bad, not great - so-so. With 5 songs still to hear form the deluxe version things are therefore looking pretty good. One thing I love about Mark are the great moment he produces and there are loads of example here. The chord change moments and thrills in Trapper Man - the wonderful ending of One Song at a Time....that moment in My Bacon Roll when he sings "Have you got my roll? My Roll? My bacon roll" - really beautifully done. And lots of great guitar and other musical moments. I am surprised in the way the sax features - no strong solo really - more soul style parping away in stuff like Nobody Does That - or the slightly dated musak stylings of GOYS - I am not sure why but I was expecting some real memorable solos - nothing yet, unless any of the others feature that.

Yes, and I'm the only one who deserves a ban, because for most of the time I troll just for the sake of it.
Maybe I really find the intro for this song a bit non original, but better to put it in such a way to troll sensitive people.

Mods will look at any complaint and may act or may not, we just need to know what rule is allegedly being broken.
No personal insults as far as I can see, except calling Quizzy a troll, but as he admits that himself it's not really an insult. :)
This is not real anymore.
Now a member like hunter who has the guts to speak against the mainstream moaning gets bullied by being called a "troll" and by threats of "investigations".
Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable.

My last theory explain the bar sounds at the start and that the bacon roll is just a bacon roll... The song has a main character talking to a client in the bar he works these days, telling that he used to have a better work, a better life etc, and while talking he is interrupted by a client asking for his roll...

Sounds plausible. With that I will listen closer. And LE, you're quite right too. It's just a roll. with bacon. :lol
In that interview from today Mark was quoted saying that it was about a brexit man... A man who cannot deal with change, with modern times, paying no longer with cash etc..
So it's just a man maybe talking to someone, who is not important, friend, wife, colleague, random person, justifying himself and complaining .. and he waits for the waiter (waitress) to deliver his bacon order .. and asks during he tells his story when the waitress comes along ... therefore the 'xcuse me...so the chorus interrupts the story and shows at the same time what kind of guy he is to order something so out-of-date ...
The waitress maybe has no such things as old fashioned bacon rolls anymore and suggests a toastie instead... and in the question about which sauce, brown or red, the decision is reflected... the Brexit .
It's just that Mark never uses a single word randomly.

Me & my mates would skip out of school (West Midlands) and across to the general store and either buy some chocolate - or - the richest among us would buy a bacon roll, which was (for this shop) a small roll with the tiniest piece of bacon! This was back in 1988, those were the days!

From the sounds in the background at the beginning of the song, I detect silverware being cleared of plates, plates probably going from the busboy to the dishwasher; if so, this would lead me to believe that the protagonist is on the kitchen side of the counter - an order taker. It appears that the customer had already requested a bacon roll, since he didn't ask for "a" bacon roll, but instead for "my" bacon roll. That then leads me to believe that he had been sitting at the lunch counter for a while, listening to the order taker complaining about being "Basil", a square peg in a round hole, in the corporate world. The customer is probably impatient and not really interested in a conversation, so he interrupts the man and asks another order taker, probably the one whom he ordered the bacon roll from in the first place, where it is!

Just received the album for Christmas and was thinking this might be one of the songs I wasn't feeling (semi-spoken-word singing, lame title, strange lyrics, a bit plain sounding).
After a few more listens, I really like it. Musically/rhythmically it reminds me of Sucker Row which is great, lyrically it recalls a bit of the feelings of Punish the Monkey.
Definitely a crap title, but what's in a name, really? If a woman had the unfortunate name Khaleesi but was pretty and was into MK it would all be okay!
Not my favourite, but growing on me with every listen.
This is my favourite song in DTRW.
I think BR is pure emotion from an old man who falls out of a very fast changing time. He does not know how to live in it. And he is alone. Very beautiful and emotional song, I heard it at a concert. Mark chose her for his set list is no coincidence.
In Lisbon, before he sings the songs, MK says something like "Mr Brexit Man".
Maybe the character is old fashion and also a brexiter, because of that...

I know all that about red or brown. In fact it was me suggesting that earlier in this thread. I also know about how MK usually writes.
My point is that the song shows a likeable character and is written from a very understanding point of view, but later in interviews MK is talking disparagingly about the type of man.

Since Brexit was voted for in a referendum and Boris Johnson won a landslide election surely "Mr Brexit man" is the most fashionable person in town and the song is a joke. Certainly backfired big time.
This one is known as the Brexit or Anti Brexit Song, but only after MK stated that in interviews. I guess when we started discussing this song back then, we thought about all different things but not Brexit. To me, these interviews showed a new MK, and it was not the most likeable one.The song leaves it to you, really (if you're not encumbered by suggested prejudices).
But speaking about the song: I have a problem with putting these two images together. Would you see the character in that song as likeable, sympathetic? Or more negative like let's say the guy in Money For Nothing? To me it read like MK has a whole lot understanding and pity for a man dealing and trying to cope with the modern world (team building, wild water rafting, still smoking). The song has a big heart, so to say. Claiming that it is about "one of those lost Brexit people" ruins the message and seems not honest to me.
So is his songwriting really that good if the message does not come across properly? I know about making your own decision on reading songs, Guy once called it applicability. But would this not mean that MK is positioning himself between both views? Is that a good thing?

It's all up to story you like to build around him.
Personally, I take him as a hero, the same one you find in Camerado, 38' special, Skydiver or Basil...
I think this is one of MK's most amazing songs.
On hearing it I can picture EXACTLY who that person is.
What surprised me at first is that people who are not from the UK could see that as well so I have obviously done some of you a disservice as your contributions above show.
This is a typical British man (actually more likely to be English, but there are a few in Scotland, just not so many) in his late 50s/early 60s who has been bypassed by the 21st century and is now a dinosaur.
I think it was very lazy shorthand to call him "Brexit man". Yes, he would have voted for Brexit but the song isn't about Brexit, it's about a man out of time.
I'm surprised to see people are sympathetic to this character - he is moaning all the way through the song, and this reaches a climax when he impatiently asks the waiting staff where his food is instead of just waiting.
As I say, to me this is a great character study of a middle aged English man, but I guess there are also plenty of people like this in other countries, millions will have voted for Trump for example.
Exactly, I was thinking of The Scaffolders Wife when I was typing that.
I'm just surprised that these songs resonate with non UK people, because to me these people are just so British.

Not always... I'm a Russian and to me, lyrics are extremely hard to understand. But maybe I'm just stupid because I don't understand lyrics even if it's in Russian... So in order to get MK's lyrics, you need to be smart first and also know English pretty well.

Maybe in MK's mind, a brexit man is a man out of time?
As a musician touring so many countries in Europe, Brexit means complications and problems that he didn't had to face before, so that's going back in time, loosing the easy it was, so, being out of time?

:thumbsupNo, I am afraid not. But thanks for your input.
I know all that about red or brown. In fact it was me suggesting that earlier in this thread. I also know about how MK usually writes.

I think one shouldn't attach too much importance to the critical assessment of the character in what are most of the time superficial interviews. When MK is asked about characters in a song for the 100th time his answers are not always differentiated and very seldomly he talks about the true meaning of them for himself.
As well as the song Skydiver, My Bacon Roll is about more than just one character. MK also said in an interview that a friend told him about these team building seminars and that his friend couldn't see any meaning in them. So together with the "Brexit Man" in the restaurant we have at least two characters that feel/are out of place.
You can see these "out of place" characters from a neutral point of you: all of us feel out of place at some point.
Or you can see that from a compassionate point of view or from a disparaging point of view.
I think the song works on all three levels.
One shouldn't attach too much importance to just one or two interviews.
Finally what made a lasting impression on me during the first shows of the tour is MK's gesture pointing towards himself when he sang the line "and so am I". Subjectively I thought given his rather frail health status at the beginning of the tour, this gesture could also mean that he himself towards the end of his touring career could feel a litte fallen out of time and place, but that really is just my subjective little interpretation. But this gesture was the most memorable for me in the early shows.
Is there a thread where scaffolder's wife is discussed more deeply? It sounds that the meaning of this song is interesting
