I will, and I'll pass on your message to Dusty when I see him too.  He's going to give me a call inside the venue and we can go for a drink or something before the concert starts.  He is front row centre and I am 3rd row centre, so I probably won't see a thing for his big baldy heed!  Ssh...don't tell him I said that! ;)

Nigel was there tonight, Richard Bennett just wrote in his diary:

Tonight's gig was at the SECC to a sold-out capacity audience of 4,414.  Our friend and brilliant sax player Nigel Hitchcock joined us this evening for the first in a series of U.K. dates.  Nigel's a legendary sax man throughout the U.K., played on loads of records, shows and a book of transcriptions of his most famous recorded solos has been published.  It's great to have him on board and he played brilliantly which is little surprise.  A good, relaxed gig tonight... maybe due to the late night celebrating John's 40th.  Certainly not error free on my part, but really enjoyable and judging from the audience's reaction, it went down a storm with them as well.

Just back and was going to tell you which songs Hitch played on, but I see that's already been done.  Was astonished really that no new ones were added.

Really very good KOG.

On R&J he played intro and outro only and not the CW middle solo.

IDUAD was a new arrangement in a raggae style.  Earlier in the show MK made comment about John's 40th birthday being yesterday and they had a late night.  He made a mistake in the first solo, then after the song said "I'm glad he doesn't have a birthday every week!"

Speedway was massive.  Fantastic!  Best song of the night.

TR seemed error free.

Tell more tomorrow, but my bed is calling... :wave

Agree! And the best choice as a final encore! More than So Far Away or Piper To The End.

Guy mentioned rehearsing some songs in sound check not yet played which feature Nigel. . Naturally i thought of 2 young lovers, Your latest trick and the intro to RaJ

Well I think that Two Young Lovers would fit his current set. Basic rock'n'roll. But in that case he'd better skip I Used To Could. Would be too much of the same.

Yeah, IUTC is the modern TWL...
I was hoping to STP with sax, as it is said to have happened in the Range Rover gig.
And I was expecting WOL with sax (altough not hoping for it), as it also happened in the Range Rover gig. I am just curious to hear how this sounds, even during the OES tour were virtually everything was over-saxophonized, there was no sax on WOL !
Also expecting WAM with sax, like in the 2002 charity gigs, would be nice.
And of course Your Latest Trick, the one song that cannot be played without sax !
Finally, what about OES ? ;)

Other Commitments? He might not have been available for the whole tour.

I think Mark is changing the set list & arrangements, & bringing in guests to make it more interesting for the band as much as for the audience.

I thought Nigel could have been better utilised.  Such a great musician and wasted really playing fills mostly until Going Home.

I felt at the concert they rushed through the songs.  Anyone else feel they have been doing this?  I know MK always goes fast but this tour he's breakneck speed and just doesn't stop - makes the concert feel a bit rushed and over before I know it.

IUTC with the sax got a big reception from the crowd and was the best live version I've heard by a country mile.

Regarding the crowd, I thought they weren't as good as they normally are in Glasgow;  no rushing the stage after TR e.g. but there was a couple of interactions with the crowd that were quite funny.  Lot of young people around me surprisingly (about my age ;))!

Did I say Speedway was great last night?  Some slightly different playing in it made for a treat for the lugs.

TR sounded pretty good too although I got the impression MK was being very careful during the final solo and never really "went for it."  Good but all seemed over too quick. :(

There was one song where Mikes' flute didn't seem to be working (no loss there then).  Can't recall the tune right now. :think

WII (this is really in order ::)) was very nice but nobody ever notices the Bonnie Banks... tune he plays or surely they'd applaud? ???

In SFA he said "Glesgae Toon" and again there can't have been many attentive audience members.  I smiled so much at his use of Scottish slang that I'm sure he noticed because I was the only one in the hall!  He looked straight at me I'm sure and then smiled himself! ;D

I walked out still missing Sultans I have to say and I didn't enjoy Gator Blood because I was still seething after not getting it. >:(

Oh, and I bumped into Dusty again after the show!

I'd also like to add to my review that HFB was very nice.  The solo was built up slowly and seemed a bit longer than usual.

That's what you get for writing a review where the songs are all over the place, but I can't remember the songs in order so... ::)

Regarding TR:  it seems to me now that he's in quite some discomfort playing just a short solo as it now stands so it makes Speedway the stand-out guitar solo of the concert.  It was certainly the best tune last night.

Sad and strange to hear... When the tour started I thought his playing was better than ever over the last 10 years, and "Sultans" sounds really great when it is played. Is TR so much more difficult?

Just read Guy's forum and he said Mark spoke to the audience and explained that it had been John's party last night and said he might be a bit wobbly!     Maybe this was why he played so carefully!   Just a thought!    :)    I think it had been quite a party!  Apparently there had been a few casualties!   ;D    Sore heads too, no doubt!    :lol

Great show, maybe not the best playing ever from a self-confessed hungover MK. :)

Good to see DMG and Isaac before and after the gig, will see them again and more of you next week in London. :)

As for the set, it was OK but I would have liked a few more "surprises". On the night the only surprise really was Father and Son, but that said I am amazed that 5:15am has been played, need to go and get that recording, one of my all time favourite tunes.

Complete waste of Hitchcock though, three songs? Although Going Home was awesome and the perfect finale.

Great to see Alan filming the band-members and audience at the end,

Always hated this whole concert. In fact I thought it is the downpoint in the whole Dire Strait era.
I always wondered about these .. what.. 16 (?), shows in a row... is there any fan on the world that has seen all Sydney Entertainment shows in a row?
Are they all recorded? How were the differences? Were they all as "good" as the final one?

Never watched the complete show, can't stand it, sorry to say. I prefer Wembley 85 BY FAR!

Yes, this concert is not my favourite, despite high praise for "The last OZ" everywhere.
The band is tired, the synth effects are too much, the clothing is ridiculous, and the music is not that great.
Take TOL, for instance - whereas the band could improve on the (already excellent) Alchemy version for the BIA tour (see Wembley'85), with more elaborated solo, backing vocals, break... here in Sydney'86 I don't like the guitar tone and the licks are too convoluted, to the point that I prefer Alchemy by far.
Take BIA, whereas in Wembley'85 the finale was very rocking, here it is quite a bore - to the point that I prefer the "On the night" version by far.
Still, these are the only versions of Ride Across the River and Industrial Deasease we have on video... nice ! and yes, the SFA version is the only and only one that is worth listening to :)

Yeah, the Sydney show is tired sounding.  I suppose it comes from playing all those nights in the same venue and the band settling into a lazy routine.

I'm surprised they wanted this show to be filmed - they were bound to realise the boredom of playing about 20 nights in the same place!

It's not good for a touring band to stay that long at the same town/venue. You can see that at the RAH stint. Aren't the last shows always weaker than the first ones? Can't remember, only attended one RAH show so far... (that will change in a few days he he)

That 's it, the demand for tickets was absolutely huge so they added show after show but there was still high demand for it.

Always hated this whole concert. In fact I thought it is the downpoint in the whole Dire Strait era.
I agree !
I'm not sure I've ever watched or listened to the whole concert. Totally disgusted by TOL with no intro.
You can't  decide to f*** up the best part of the best song of the tour, especially when it's filmed ! :thumbsdown

That's not what disgusted me most...
TOL can be good short or long. Of course I prefer it with the intro, but I can also understand that such a telecast has some time constraints. I think TOL was shortened not only for this show, but for the whole OZ leg of the tour, probably to be able to play TR as well. Well ok, TR was not played in the filmed show, but again that's probably because of time constraints.

What I liked far less was the strange guitar tone and the "over the top" guitar licks in the end solo. If you listen to Wembley'85, the end solo is a bit more elaborated than in Alchemy, it is a bit more of a slower build-up, whether you prefer the more straightforward approach of Alchemy or the more romantic one of Wembley is matter of taste, both are excellent; in both cases the finale of song is bombastic; but in Sydney 86 there seem to be a will to add systematically some "side-tracking" or "digressions", not sure how to name it, to each lick of the end solo. The end result sounds a bit like Sultans nowadays vs. Sultans in Alchemy: you sometimes wonder "where is this exactly leading to ?".

I could also comment in a similar way for BIA.

To me the playing in '86 is a huge downgrade from the playing in '85. '85 was probably the pinacle of DS, as dmg would say :) '85 is a bit better than '83, but '83 is better than '86 IHMO.

It's not good for a touring band to stay that long at the same town/venue. You can see that at the RAH stint. Aren't the last shows always weaker than the first ones? Can't remember, only attended one RAH show so far... (that will change in a few days he he)

I hope not :smack

I am one among the ones that like this '86 show very much, especially their shortened TOL version and the extra feature licks from Jack on Expresso and Solid Rock or the incredible intro on Two Young Lovers. Many good things on that show.

If only the sound could be better recorded.

I was planning to post a reply in the same way, but you've been faster  :)

Indeed, even if it's not the best DS gig, I like it for its "curiosities" :

- Jack's solo on expresso love after the sax, that doesn't features on other gigs from 85-86
- 2 young lovers intro : fabulous ! groove, feeling...I love it
- solid rock : Jack is doing a little bit too much IMHO, but it rocks !
- extended Why worry : I find it works much better then the short version (like in Wembley). I also love the december 85 version (bootleg called "cocaine" with EC)
- Your latest trick : the only one version known from BIA tour, with Mark playing on the nylon CA gibson guitar, and John playin jazzy licks on bass (seated !)
- Sultans and going home played on the white strat : very unsual. I love the sound on theThe sultans outro. The end lick is very powerfull.
- BIA : I don't like very much the 85 versions, too much powerful, while the song had to end quiet IMHO. And don't forget that this "new" ending in Sydney is the one used for the 20 yeras after....
- and of course THE version for SFA (even I like wembley very much)

and last but not least : we can se Mark driving his porsche !

All things you mentionned are very valid points. In fact I don't hate the show, it has its strong points, it is just that it is not my favourite. I disagree with you on WW (I think this extended version is a bit slow and boring, I prefer the shorter but more upbeat Wembley) and BIA (I know that the rocking ending has only been done in '85 and never since, but still, I think it is great and the way it should be !).
Apart from that as I already mentionned I think TOL has been done better in '85 and even in '83 (and it is not a matter of short or long). Sultans was better in Wembley and in Live Aid...
But yes, RATR, SFA, TWL, ID are the strong points of the show...

But 3 out of 4 highlights are still from the DS catalogue, and one is even SFA.

So I have to admit that as a MK/DS die-hard fan I am bored with that one but for a casual listener it is still fun to get it.

Interestingly those who said that the DS days are over, when comes the time to get some sax back in the play Mark mostly use it the way it was done back then. So a MK show is still something spanning his back catalogue over the last 35 years. Just that there are some choice I strongly disagree regardless of the DS  or MK solo brand.

By the way I was not fond of R&J during the DS days.
GH with or without sax is great, Hamburg '96 recording is still my fave one (although the fist half is even better on ANIL but the second half is a bit too lite).

Very few DS or MK songs were recorded with sax on the album in the first place (only YLT, RATR, OES, PONO, In the Sky, Radio City Serenade I think). So these songs can be made sound great, with or without sax. Sax is an extra. Here Nigel is barely used... oh well.
This beeing said, Sultans with Sax was badass, I really love it and would like it to come back ! :) Live Aid, Wembley'85, Basel'92...

Yes agree, The reason is because the first half of the song is made for clean tone (on studio version it was even acoustic guitar : ovation) and 2nd half is made for driven tone (studio version was the red schecter, I guess on Mesaboogie).

in 83 and 85-86 and on ANIL, Mark chose the clean tone for the entire song
in 96 he chose the drive tone for the whole song, and in 97 and 2000, he even chose to play wild theme (nylon CA gison guitar on studio) on a cranked LP !

since 2008, he returned to the strat atht suits more to the intro, but he lost the powerfull tone for the outro.

a solution would be to play it on a strat, and then switch on a tube stompbox pedal for the 2nd part
