Brothers in Arms has re-entered the UK charts at # 8! :D
-
Nice!
Reaspm?
-
I'd like to put it down to the number of times I've played my old "Live in 85" VHS video during the last week while trying to get an acceptable copy to transfer to DVD, but as that doesn't result in any sales I think I'm just guilty of wishful thinking !
Whatever the reason, it is remarkable that it has re-entered at No.8 I can't think of any recent publicity in the UK that could result in a "run" on DS albums.
Perhaps people have been downloading it after buying tickets for the Tracker tour when they realised they couldn't find their old CD :think :hmm
Four days ago the reports said it had re-entered at number 4 !
Possibly more surreal is the fact that Mr Bob has just gone to number one in the UK chart with an album of Sinatra covers ?????
-
It's deal of the week on Google Play, 99p to download the album. :)
-
Wonderful news!! I had the LP because my Brother bought it for me as a gift when he came to visit me in Sweden in the 80's but as I moved a lot in the 90's I somehow managed to loose it so I bought the CD again last year!!!
-
Awesome stuff. There are loads of other albums at 99p on the Google store atm too, so it goes to show that Dire Straits are a massive impact for music seeing as they are not in the top ten. Excellent aachievement and album that's 30 years old. So relevant Mr Knopfler and crew.

It says of its quality by its own. Like a vine - it's getting better with the age! :thumbsup

I'll bet Mark's quietly pleased about this. He'll go into a room on his own and jump up and down! ;)

He'll celebrate by ending every show on the Tracker tour with So Far Away.

Just having a little laugh at your post R
-
rudiger you have 35 versions of the CD? Wow! I must have 20 versions on vinyl and CD together.
-
Actually the pic is not comprehensive: I think (not including vinyls and cassette) I have about 50 different editions (http://smiley.yahooplus.ro/pics/smilies/smiley-shame-7.gif)
-
Only John Bennett who is focused on collecting BiA must have more!
Some of the most interesting versions are the Yugoslavian vinyl with slightly different lyrics printed for MFN. The Korean that for some peculiar reason leaves out RATR and puts WW first on Side B. There is also an extra rare test pressing from Poland with the songs at their full CD versions (don't have it). Which reminds me of another picture disc the SOS single from Poland.
-
I was wondering what is the best sounding remastered version? So far I know the 1996 remaster by Bob Ludwig, to me it sounds a bit too compressed compared to the original. But there is also a XRCD and a Hybrid SACD. Did anyone compare these to the sound of the vinyl editions? And what is the longest running time of Brothers In Arms?
-
It is a matter of taste really. Many prefer the original (not remastered) versions. Some like the 20th anniversary SACD remaster. (Not the 1996) The CD version is longer that the vinyl, but I don't think that there is a difference in time amongst CDs.
-
Thanks for your input. I'll give the 20th anniversary SACD remaster a spin soon. By the way, the 1996 Bl remastered version of BIA lasts 7:04. Most of the time I fight the fade out by turning the volume up to eleven! :wave

If you look closer in the article above you will find that, officially, DS first time live performing BIA song was in Split, Croatia on their 85-86 tour!
sorry but I am so proud of that. :-) I was to young and I was not fan back than but now it is a pleasure to have know of that!

Many prefer the DVD-Audio.
This too has received positive reviews

But no dates this time anywhere in ex Yu on folowing tour :-(
I'll have to go in Austria or Italy for instead...
-
......which is the best sounding to you?
I'm not an audiophile nor I have an equipment that allows me to catch the nuances. In general I don't sympathize with the remasters due to the excessive compression which reduces the dynamic range. But, as you said, It's a matter of taste

I second that ! No more SFA !!!!
-
I 3rd that, NO "so far away and Romeo and juilet please!! my two worst songs in the setlist from the last tour
-
I have it in cassette, vinyl, cd, sacd, dvd-audio and 180 gr vinyl, so it makes 6 versions of BIA.
The dvd-audio mix is great, everytime I play it in my dvd I truly enjoy the wonderful 5.1 remix made by Chuck Ainlay, which is supposed to be the same of the sacd, but as long as I dont have a sacd player I can
-
Its been quite a while since my audio system was hi-fi. Now it is more of wi-if. (willing if in the mood) But my faithful DVD player and a set of headphones do the trick. However, I will not comment on the audio fidelity, because the songs are somehow imprinted in my brain, and the audio signal acts more as a memory stimulant, than a source of information to be analyzed by my brain. As such I find that the vinyl edition with the sorter versions of 4 songs (WoL, RATR, TMTS, OW, BiA being the same on vinyl and CD as well) is more solid. The extra minutes in the songs (SFA, MFN, YLT, WW) don't add much to it. As a matter of fact they make the songs a bit tiring, since they are only repetition. (with the possible exception of YLT intro). MFN is even better in its even shorter edit from MFN compilation and even the BiA edit on the same disk has its merits-but I still prefer the longest version. Of course when I found out in 1990 that the CD version had extended versions, I jumped train, but still, I find the shorter versions tighter and solid. The new reissued in double vinyl, actually have the longer CD versions.
-
Oh well, I don't have a SACD-Player, too. Maybe I'm going to try the double LP. Interesting discussion regarding the track lengths, to me it all depends on my mood, when it's all about diving into the music the longer version do the trick for me.

The long outro of Why Worry is beautiful, with a great bass line, probably Neil Jason or Tony Levin...
