Title: Mark & John in London Dec. 3rd
Post by: Best Brown Baggies on November 26, 2009, 03:40:29 PM
Blue Plaque

On Thursday 3rd December, Mark and John Illsley will be attending a short ceremony in Deptford, London, to unveil a blue plaque on the site of the first Dire Straits performance back in 1977. The award, presented by PRS for music, is part of a national campaign in the UK to highlight areas where significant musical events have taken place. The plaque will be fixed to Farrer House in Church Street, Deptford and unveiled at 11.30 am.

Cheers   BBB

Wow, that's fantastic. When I was in London in 2003 to see Eric Clapton (MK was supposed to be there but had his accident the week before  :-[ ) I remember seeing one of those little blue plaques showing where Benny Hill used to live. :)

What a shame that Pick and DK aren't there too though.

Never been, although I don't get to London as often as I'd like. Last time was nearly two years ago to see Led Zeppelin and even then I was in and out in under 24 hrs.  :-\

I'm definately going to do a day of MK related sightseeing in London next year for the RAH gigs. The new plaque is a must. Just wish i could be there for the un-veiling. Surely there must be something about it in the local papers nearer the time.

I was always curious if any of the current tenants knows that this place was where DS legend was born or if they care at all.
I'd love to be there with Mark and John on 3rd December.

Were you actually there? The boots definitely don't do it justice. Not that surprising as they must have been super stealth, we were all searched on the way in.

Definitely one of the best gigs I've ever been to. I'm not a huge Zep fan but was lucky enough to be drawn for tickets. LZ were great and there was a whole other show before hand too with lots of great Atlantic artists. Also, there was a real sense of "occasion", getting to the 02, people begging for tickets, lots of TV news crews doing reports etc. Me and my pal Jamie went, drank lots of beer during the show and had a fantastic time. :)

I wonder if this little trip down memory lane has stirred any seminal seeds of conversations between Mark & John, along the lines of.............."How da ya fancy givin it another go after all these years?" :) :) :)

John.... "So Mark, me old mate, how da ya fancy gettin the old band back together?"

Mark.... "Look, i've told you a million times, i don't look back. I'm goin solo now!"

John.... "Don't forget though, we've got the Alchemy Dvd comin out in the new year. That'll get the old fans thinkin about the Straits again, it'll be perfect timing!"

And only if we can do 3 hour shows with appearances from all the old Straits members from way back when. AND only if we can play an extended version of TOL. I've bin dyin to play that for ages."

John.... "Ok, that's set, i'll just finish my solo album, then we can start the tour summer 2011"

Mark.... "Oh, and i'll get my mate Dave Gilmour to open every show for us, it'll be great. I'm really glad we had this little chat, i can't wait"

Am I the only one who wouldn't want that to happen? I got front row tickets for next year.

If DS reformed they would probably play huge stadiums and I'd have to compete with "tourists" who just want to hear Money for Nothing and Walk of Life.

All to have John Illsley playing bass instead of Glenn? No thanks.

I agree - i woundnt want the band to reform - things are so much better these days as a solo artist than the mega stadium days of old.....

YES, we dont get to hear the songs we all want, TOL, PONO, TMTS etc etc and yes we do get the same old tunes trawled out on tour....but this would be no different if the group touring would be DS - we wouldnt get smaller more intimate venues and it would be practically impossible to get the quality of seats for next years tour as most of have now....

Yes, the reformation of DS i can see happening BUT only for the benefit of GOSH or some other highly worthy cause....im pretty sure that the bad taste the last few years of DS left with MK he wouldnt want to go back to those days...havent you heard....forward is the new back!! ;D

In my dream it was 2011. You'd still get your front row seats in 2010. And i'm sure you'd still get front row seats in a DS pre-sale as well for the 2011 tour. Also the gig would be 3 hrs long, so yes, you'd get your WOL, MFN's etc...., but they'd also play a one hour encore of rareties.!
Come on live the dream, and Glenn instead of John? I'd go for John any day. I've always loved John's playing, the way he kicks his legs etc.....Nothing wrong with Glenn, just have a soft spot for John.

Nothing against John, and it was really great to see him in 2002, but quite frankly the bass isn't that important to me, as long as MK is there the show is always good.

ROFL Nigel, ..........And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real....  ;D

I never have been at a concert of DS and when they all, as well old members as the artists who are with Mark solo like Richard, Glenn etc would play together at one big stage, with of course all the fans of AMIT/MK news in front of the stage, then that would be WONDERFUL!!!

I know it never will happen, but I would love it!  :P

Well, the 2002 gigs came pretty close to that.

Mark Knopfler
Guy Fletcher
Brendan Croker
Steve Phillips
Marcus Cliffe
Chris White
Bobby Valentino
Danny Cummings
Geraint Watkins
John Illsley
Robbie McIntosh
Jools Holland
Jimmy Nail

And all in a nice small venue. Brilliant gigs.

The eternal thing about the reforming DS...

I had the chance to attend the Genesis and Police reunion tours, both in Stadium, and had the chance to enjoy in dvd (sigh) the CReam reunion, and honestly, I will only like Dire Sstraits reunion in this way:

- Several shows at the Royal Albert Hall and Several shows at the Madison Square Garden, so both european and north american audiences (the traditional audiences for MK shows) can attend the shows

- Pre-sales tickets with preferences to all those fans that bought tickets in the past for MK shows (markknopfler.com should have a databes for this), then a presale for registered people in the official MK site, and then general sale.

I think this the way to keep the musical part clean of the too big stadiums sh*t, and at the same time to thanks the fans who supported MK after DS.

And yes, Mark and John are Dire Straits (remaining members from 1977-1979 era, the beguining), and Alan, Guy, Chris and probably Danny will be the great addition for being hystorical members.

I have mixed feelings about a reunion, always thought it'd be great but after seeing The Police at Twickenham Stadium I realised it may not be.  That gig is probably the worst gig I've been to. It was too big and it felt like a money making exercise.  Left there feeling ripped off.  I have seen rainforest boy a couple of times at the RAH and thought they were great.

Yeah but there is something that I love when John joins the band, I can't put my finger on it. I think it's Johns energy that he brings.

And to be fair DS were always a better band than the police IMO!!!!!

Mark.... "Ok ok then go on , but only a 3 year world tour covering every continent, and no more. That will be it. And only if we can do 3 hour shows with appearances from all the old Straits members from way back when. AND only if we can play an extended version of TOL. I've bin dyin to play that for ages."

I'm not in the least interested in a reunion of DS.  In 2010 I have seats on the front row for three concerts.  That wouldn't happen if DS reformed.   Apart from that, the music is just as wonderful with MK solo and the band is terrific.

BTW, Which DS line-up are we talking about?   Mark, John, Pick and David?   That certainly won't happen.  David and Pick didn't even bother to turn up for the plaque unveiling, let alone a reunion!   :(     The rest of the line-ups changed on pretty much every tour, so it's difficult to know which DS would reform.

I can only imagine, with horror, what it would be like, to be part of an audience who are only there because DS have reformed and who would surely admit to being "the greatest DS fans" when those same people deserted MK in his solo career and would not recognise any of the solo albums!  It doesn't bear thinking about!  We, who have stayed with him through all the ups and downs, are the real fans!

We can talk about this 'til the cows come home, but unless Mark wants it to happen, it won't!    I really find it quite insulting to the present band, who give us such amazing albums and concerts, to even suggest such a reunion.   I hope it never happens!   :)

The thing that worries me most about a DS reunion is that, at the moment fans are looking back through rose-tinted spectacles at the old DS days and the reality could be entirely different!   I think we will be bitterly disappointed, because it won't be like the old days.   I think it's best to keep those wonderful memories in our head and don't spoil them!    Perhaps that's why MK doesn't want to have a reunion.  :-\

Hey Val. My comments WERE only a dream. Believe me, i'm happy the way Mark is nowadays, and i'm sure it will never happen, but i never understand peoples REAL negative feelings towards a DS reunion.
If non- diehard fans do want to crawl out of the woodwork and claim they are true fans, then let them, as long as we true fans got the best seats in pre sales then who cares.
I for one is just happy as long is Mark is doing what he wants to do, and i'm sure i'll always enjoy whatever that may be. ;D

BBB - I'm really sorry, but It wasn't you I was getting at at all!  Of, course I know you were just dreaming! Your imaginary chat between Mark and John was really funny and made me laugh.  ;D

It is just the way I feel about the whole reunion business.   I think everything is pretty wonderful NOW and can't really understand why people want to look back to the past.   Musically, the band we have now imo, is a very special band and has been with MK longer than all the other line-ups, so it must be a bit galling to them that people keep wanting DS back again.   I'm not too sure which DS, though!  :-\  As I said before, I can't ever see the day when the four founder members would get together again.  I always think when bands from the 70s and 80s reform that they look a bit tragic and that's the last thing I would wish to happen.

I feel the same as you do and only want Mark to be happy and do what he wants to do.  Anyway, we are lucky to have those old videos and are able to see them at their best and in their youth!  Sorry to have upset you, BBB!   :-*

Hey Nigel, whenever you take a trip with that machine, then be sure to collect me too!!  ;D I missed all the music and concerts in the past, so it would be great to have a second change! Imagine I would be young again too and have engergy to dance the whole evening of the concert!  :P

Val, although I want to be in the time machine, I think you are right! ;) A reunion won't be the same as it was in those years when Mark, the band members and we all were younger!

I am satisfied when they play some of the best DS songs at the concerts next year and sure will enjoy it to listen to Mark's solo music, especial songs of GH, RPD and of course my most favourite Get Lucky album.  :P

Interesting to hear that David is breaking the ice with the "DS" subject.
It seemed to be for some time a very bitter subject to him and playing and again with Mark was sort of "d.e.t.a.i.". Although not the best guitar player in the world, the way he sounded in the early days of DS was interesting. Now the question is would Mark do it?
We know that John is not against it, Guy will do it, Alan although not interested by Mark current direction would probably do it.

After all Roger Waters and David Gilmour did manage to be together again on the same stage with Nick and Rick or Eric Clapton with fr

I had the chance in 1999 to attend at Wembley Stadium the Stones a night they were all "on" and they were really great, Midnight Rambler was played in hell mode! And Atlantic City 1989 is really a killer show. Now they may be not as great as they were 10 years earlier (shorter show and still much expensive) but certainly not "tragic".

You can't say they came back "stronger than ever", they'll never be stronger than that late 60s/early 70s period.

Stumbled across this on the net, if you remember the picture of MK and JI at the plaque unveiling there was a guy in between, it appears he is a photographer who took some early pictures of DS around Deptford.  MK and the photographer are mentioned in this deptford blog.

http://transpont.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

and the photographer has a myspace page with some pictures we've all seen before but with a few comments on each pic from his memories.

mildly interesting especially when we are in the silly season between albums
