Round 3...
-
Down The Road Wherever hides at least two amazing songs in the bonuses that deserve to be on the main album, so it will go! Tracker — next for the same reason! :lol
Pale Imitation BEGS to be the last song on Down The Road and Heart Of Oak BEGS to be the last song on Tracker. But we got bonus tracks instead, well, ok...

I treat the four bonus songs on Tracker as part of the main album as they are a continuation - I always buy delux versions. Anyway I voted DTRW purely because it contains too many songs that I don't like very much. I agree about Pale Imitation and the other bonus songs, but they weren't included on the main album, they are separate.

Oh yes DTRW is a deffo bye bye for me, then it gets mega difficult....

I listened to the latest two albums this morning (along with AC's Backstory) and changed my mind upon my order. Tracker is now numero uno on my hit list; such a dull list of songs. DtRW has some really good songs.
Trapper Man - such a good song with even his vocal sounding energetic
Nobody Does That - nice funky number like he's never released before
Drovers' Road - quality man
One Song at a Time - Classic
and all three bonus tracks are fab.
So vote Tracker - right!!! ;)

I listen and enjoy the whole of Tracker, including the bonus songs, but on DTRW I can only get as far as OSAAT without my mind wandering! Drover's Road is my favourite.

For me it's goodbye Down The Road Wherever.
-
DTRW contains instant classics (One song, Trapper man, Drover's Road, Matchstick Man). But for the most part it is way too cheesy. Out.

Yes, there are lots of great songs on DTRW but, I really can't share Mark's passion for brass instruments be it on the album or on the tour. Terrible! So, good bye DTRW!
BTW, Tracker is one of my favourites. ;)

Here DTRW is the next to go too but it doesn't get mega difficult for me yet ;D

I keep voting Tracker until it goes out.

You can see already my reaction seeing Privateering gone, that in my opinion is far far better than Tracker, also Crimson is far better for me than Tracker, total disbeleaf.

DTRW has become an 'Occasional' album for me unlike Tracker which I listen to a lot more.....
I really only listen to Drovers, OSAAT and the bonus material....Tracker - well I just can't fault it!! Lights of Taormina - well my lordies!!!!

Oh yes the Horns - another valid reason to say bye bye to DTRW!!!!

Please drop all the horns for the new album Mark.

There's something uncomfortable for me about the way he sings Taormina. Either his phrasing is all wrong or there's too many lyrics for the music - it just sounds awful. The guitar doesn't have a great sound either tbh.

LOT is just amazing and one can immediately think they are in Taormina listening to the first few bars of the opening! I haven't noticed anything 'wrong' with his phrasing or indeed the music - in fact I love the sound of the slide on his guitar which to me adds depth to the track.....Beautiful and stunning!!

I agree. Taomina is a beautiful song, but that is just one of many lovely songs on Tracker - it's way better than DTRW - imo of course! ;)
-
I'm not a very big fan of brass (and wood) wind instruments but I have to say that I love any single note of them on DTRW.
And it looks they are going to be back, as Guy insist on saying ALL THE BAND when he talks about February sessions.

Horns are great when used properly, for instance, the horn section is perfect for this type of music:

Mark is of course famous for overusing some instruments in the past (putting pedal steel in everything on OES tour, for instance, then folk guys, now brass section), so I think we should get used to the horns by now lol.

He starts singing normally then abnormally speeds up toward the end of the line as if he's try to fit in all the words and there doesn't seem to be any correlation between the pace of the music and phrasing of the lyrics.

Tracker is really a borer. The Quality and sound is excellent and it has Basil.

I'm listening to it now and I don't hear any speeding up at the end of lines. It's the same tempo throughout!

Maybe. There are a lot of words, but I like the song a lot. :)

I actually like the pedal steel, and think Paul Franklin was a great fit for both Dire Straits and Mark solo, the folk guys addition are ok, but the Brass for me is just not Mark!!!
-
Having pedal steel on a "rock" album was kind of innovative in a way and made for a unique sound which us die hards appreciated, not sure it helped commercially all round though. Or maybe the songs just weren't as catchy as BiA.

I totally agree with you! :clap For me Mark Knopfler is a rock musician influenced by folk, country and blues and I don't want him to sound like a big band leader. Sorry, Mark! ;)

I'm not a brass fan either, but I don't mind some sax in moderation, which, I believe is actually woodwind - Chris White played sax in DS days. The trumpet was a big turn-off for me on the last tour - too raspy!
-
I agree Val, everything Chris White did was great for the songs, but what we have now is not working, for me anyway. I always love the interplay between Paul Franklin and Mark on You and Your Friend, plus his Walk of Life solo is always great.
-
I guess that the good thing about the album you’re voting for remaining in (Golden Heart for me), is that you don’t struggle with the next one to vote off.
Tracker is a bit of a let down after the opening track. If it was all as good as LAJADAS it would be a fab album.
RPD is a good album for songs that are good but better live (WAM, Marbletown.) How I wish that Fare Thee Well Northumberland was played live as I reckon it could be an awesome track live.
-
Forgot to mention that saxophon is alright with me.
-
A difficulty for me is that each of his albums is a little different and has its own flavour and musical focus.
This makes it quite difficult for me to "eliminate" one over the other, because they all have different approaches.
Of course I have favorites.
I wonder if some of you have similar feelings/problems when having to decide which album goes next?
-
It is difficult, because Mark's albums are made to such a high standard.

I should think so…..they certainly take their time over them!

There is no doubt we are fans...

Yeah, I can just about stomach the Sax - Chris White or Nigel Hitchcock

I have to choose between Tracker & Down the road wherever.. I don't know which one i like the least, because i like both... It's so difficult :think

Voted for Tracker...
