My dream will come true.  Because MK was busy recording his forthcoming solo album, there was lack of time for him rehearsing with BD's band before the tour started.  So there was no detailed plan for coleboration before the tour kicked off.  After several shows given, MK gradually participated in BD's set little by little.  MK is now getting familiar with all the songs BD wished to play on this tour, and after all are practiced both on stage and with the assistance of BD's guitar player off stage, finally MK will replace BD's current guitar player or be added as an extra guitar player and will go with BD for his rest of the world tour, not only the european leg, but all over the world.  Bob did pay a visit to China this spring, and maybe he could come along again with MK as his guest guitar player.    MK could find some time to perform one or two tunes of his own, just like what he did with EC on his tour back in 1987, 88, and 89.  :) :) :)      Beyond my wildest dream~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~!!!

Best wishes to all BD and MK fans from Beijing, China

It boils my blood tho'. It should have been like that throughout the tour. It's another reason that I think people visiting the tour earlier on have been totally ripped off.

Of course, they didnt have time to rehearse properly together before the tour started...

 ??? ??? ???

Every night they are playing together, MK is playing the songs without any rehearse, just some instructions by Bob

I am pretty sure that it's not because they didn't have rehearsing time.
It's just a Bob's kind of thing to do. Just invite him when he feels for it and maybe nowadays to prevent people from leaving the venue as well.

MK is a topmusician, so some rehearsal during the soundcheck is enough. Bob doesn't organize things like MK does. He changes setlist last minute etc.

Thinking about it, there really is no artistic justification for this tour, is there? I mean, they played five songs together last night, and Mark's playing sounded superb, but Bob was still doing his thing. It didn't feel like a collaboration. I don't know, I could have done without it. To me, it was kind of pointless. Mark should enhance his own songs, and Bob should do his thing. It's just my impression but I had the feeling they don't fit together, on an artistic level.

On this tour, whether people here like it or not, Dylan is the headliner and Mark is the support act.  I don't say this is right or wrong and I don't say it as a judgement on their respective abilities, strengths or weaknesses. And I'm not passing an opinion. It is simply a statement of fact. That's how the tour came about and that's how it was set up.

It is to Mark's credit that he agreed to do the tour, knowing that he would be the support act when it is self-evident that he could headline any tour of his own.

Maybe, Mark's appearance in Dylan's set at Bournemouth was a trial to see how it would work out. If so, then it obviously went well enough for both of them to want to continue the arrangement and build on it.

Playing with Dylan is not straightforward. For a start, even though he's only done 14 shows so far and is mostly doing 14 songs a night, he has already included 42 different songs in his sets. Here they are, as compiled by John Baldwin, with the number of times each has been played so far:-

Leopard Skin Pill-Box Hat (14)
Highway 61 Revisited (14)
Thunder On The Mountain (14)
Ballad Of A Thin Man (14)
Like A Rolling Stone (14)
All Along The Watchtower (14)

Things Have Changed (11)

Tangled Up In Blue ( 8 )

Honest With Me (7)
A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (7)

Summer Days (6)
Desolation Row (6)

Blind Willie McTell (5)
Forgetful Heart (5)

John Brown

Note that "John Brown", as performed at Mannheim with Mark on guitar, was making its first appearance on the tour. It's an old Dylan song, not on any of his old Columbia Records albums and never performed live for decades but then resurrected in recent years - and not one of his best songs, in my view, but that's another issue. For Mark, it was unlikely to have been a song with which he was particularly familiar, though some might suggest otherwise.

So that's the first difficulty, the number of songs and unfamilliarity with some of them. The second is that, for Dylan, any rehearsed arrangement is rarely fixed. He doesn't always stick to it: keys change, words change, verses are swapped around, harmonica pops up in different places and so on. This is why his band watch him so carefully because it's their job to keep up with him, whatever he does and whereever he goes. I can even recall a show where Dylan has wandered off-stage for a while in the middle of the song and the band just had to play on until he reappeared. It's not disrespect on Dylan's part, it's living with the moment. Sometimes it works wonderfully and, other times, it does not. For Mark, it cannot have been straightforward.

I guess that the guitarist in Dylan's band to whom you refer is Charlie Sexton:

Guy never stops to state that, too. I have no problem with that, once understood it is ok. I think (and we talked about it Sunday in the Irish Pub) that it might be easier for Bob to do just 90 minutes, but selling out greater arenas with a full programm, so Mark is indeed just support. But the guy is 71, 72 (?) years old, so I cannot blame him for NOT playing two full hours every night.

Goldenheart, if I have not missed it (and I obviously missed a few things during the last days) I have not read a line from you about Mark's set?  ;) Just curious, how was it, did you like it? Would be nice to have a nice little well written review from you!  ;D

Does it actually state that MK is the support act in any official material like posters etc.  Although it is Bob's tour I was under the impression it was a double-headliner and MK went on first simply because (as Guy said on his forum) "somebody has to."

Though it doesn't say "support act", "warm up act" and the like, I guess the "plus" in the poster below is indicative of how things are viewed:

I'm pleased for all you guys that are getting to see Mark playing with Bob, I really am.
It boils my blood tho'. It should have been like that throughout the tour. It's another reason that I think people visiting the tour earlier on have been totally ripped off.
I've a real bitter taste in my mouth from all of this.
Sorry, but I can't help how I feel about it.

I AGREE!!!! >:( >:(
I can see why its turned out like this, but I can only afford the one show,
(Nottingham), and of course they only did their seperate shows.
I so wish, not that there's any guarantee, that I'd booked one of the London
shows, but of course, at the time of booking, they weren't even available.

I was pretty sure that this tour needs some time to evolve, so I've booked tickets throughout the tour to see the start, middle parts and the end. To be honest, the tour start in Dublin was a bit of a disappointment. But Mannheim was much better. Let's see what's coming next until it all ends in London. I would expect the London shows to set the peaks of the tour...

And on this tour last shows won't be shorter than at the first ones so no reduced setlist.
And no early permanently dropped songs as well as it is usally the case on the regurlar tours.

Just listened to last night's recording and I am really amazed at how wonderful "Mississippi" and "John Brown" sound, especially Mark's guitar - he was fantastic!    Pity Bob had to spoil the second song "Don't Think Twice" because he is so out of tune - he should leave the guitar-playing to MK!"

With Bob on guitar, that band loses all balance since they suddenly have four guitarists, no piano, and no organ. I used to think that Bob's little solos could be quite fun (check out hiss Crossroads version with Clapton!), but this is completely unnecessary.

Can anyobdy remember the song Mark did with Bob where Bob played his weird solo all over Mark's? Was it "Don't Think Twice" or "Things Have Changed"?

In Luxembourg he did it with "Baby Blue" and in Oberhausen he did it with "It Ain't Me Babe" !  Did it happen again in Mannheim?

Yes it did, but I can't remember which song... Since he didn't play the songs you mentioned, it was probably "Don't Think Twice"  ???

It was Don't Think Twice, yes.

High Water (For Charley Patton) (4)
Tryin' To Get To Heaven (4)
The Levee's Gonna Break (4)
Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (4)
Spirit On The Water (4)

Not Dark Yet (3)
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue (3)
Love Sick (3)
It Ain't Me, Babe (3)

Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues (2)
Simple Twist Of Fate (2)
Watching The River Flow (2)
Beyond Here Lies Nothin' (2)
Can't Wait (2)
Make You Feel My Love (2)
Mississippi (2)

The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll
Cold Irons Bound
Visions Of Johanna
Nettie Moore
Shooting Star
Man In The Long Black Coat
This Wheel's On Fire
I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
Jolene
Forever Young
Workingman's Blues #2
John Brown

OK, I admit, my son and I enjoyed the complete show, MK, BD w/ MK, BD w/o MK. Perfect night for us. (My wife enjoyed MK and BD w/ MK and did endure the rest...)

And so, yes, the double bill makes sense. Beside the hardcore MK fans who dislike Bob (too loud, too crooked, can't play, can't sing, don't talk, all that...) and the hardcore Bob-Cats who find MK just too boring and predictable there are Bob fans like me who are MK fans too (although I am not that familiar with his complete oevre whereas I recognize almost every Dylan song most of the time before he start singing [or barking]) and who are more than glad to be given the opportunity of seeing both in one show. And Mark joining Bob on stage for more and more songs is really worth it, alone...

I know what they mean, but Bob certainly is predictable too. Sure, he does vary his songs, but you can be sure the variation will be within the blues shuffle / rock idiom and how much/little he will bark out the lyrics. I've listened to a few of the shows now, and Dylan's show, although it is very intense and energetic (good), sounds like one big jam session. I like it live and spontaneous, but this sounds so disorganized that it is bordering on comical.

I agree that, based on the Bournemouth show I attended, it was pretty much a bluesy-rock approach throughout from Dylan but it's another development, another phase in his stage career. Recently, we've had almost none of the country-based style that peppered his sets not too long ago.  At some shows, apparently, he has done the occasional ballad, such as "Nettie Moore". Personally, I'd wish he would do at least a couple of these at every show.

Roughly half the 42 songs performed so far on this tour come from the 1963 - 1974 period and, when you've played 100 shows a year for the last 23 years or more, you really do have to vary things a bit to stay interested. And you try to find something new and different in songs you've sung hundreds of times.

Dylan is less concerned about technical perfection and more concerned with "feel" and the moment. There are flubs even on some of his official releases but he keeps them in, if he judges that the particular take selected matches best what he is trying to put over in the lyrics. Some might regard this as slapdash (comical, even) but it has resulted in a body of work nonpareil for a solo artist in the last 50 years. As an example, we are told, by those who have heard the session tapes for BLONDE ON BLONDE, that he recorded several different versions of most of the songs: some slower; some faster; some in different keys; and so on. It was described by someone as being more like the recording session of a jazz musician.  He has often bemoaned the current recording techniques by which recordings are constructed, element by element, to produce the finished product. He much prefers to record "live" in the studio (or, at least, as "live" as possible). He likes that kind of sponaneity.

Each to his own then.

I think that's a big shame, because some of his studio recordings contain some true gems, musically speaking. If he could have transferred some of that to the stage, AND fueled them with the current energy, it could have lifted his shows of out of the "bar-room bawl" situation ...

Right, I like your style, tongue in cheek but still making a point.  Open minded too.

Nice one YAH

It makes me wonder if some of these journalists are actually at the gig!   One of the reviews I read said MK played MFN!   Another said that Bob and his band looked sharp and well-dressed, whereas Mark looked as though he had just come from rehearsal, wearing jeans and a WHITE shirt!   In fact he was wearing a black one!   ::)

I know from a journalist that some actualy only give at some time a quick look in the house and then spend rest of the show at the bar.

In all the videos I see this very same situations

- MK looking probably at Glenn Saggers and asking about something related with his guitar (not plugged, low volume, whatever)

- MK looking at Charlie Sexton wondering in which scale he must to play and what he must to play

Jbaent,   I loved both of these songs, especially John Brown, and I thought MK's solos were beautiful!  I think he's still feeling his way with BD and the band, because he has had such short notice and I think he has done a great job!   :)

In the 1987 RAH shows with EC the songs and solos sounded well rehearsed and nothing to chance and much was the same in early '88.  However, I think in the N. American tour later in the year the shows were much better and some arrangements changed.

So back to today then (!) and what I am saying is that obviously a lot of rehearsal went into even the early '87 shows with EC, but no rehearsal was done with Bob at all before the tour which I find astonishing quite frankly.  I'm not going to point any fingers at who's to blame bacause I don't know how the business works but one would have thought they would have ran through a few tunes.

From what I have gathered from Guy's diaries, Bob tells Mark, or sends a note  ;D on the afternoon of the concert, which songs they will play together and then Charley and Mark do a quick run-through!   It must be quite difficult for someone, like MK, who is such a perfectionist and likes everything to run smoothly.

Again, I might be allowed to quote my sister when she said about the Munich show that Mark looked a little lost on stage with Bob, always trying to make
eye contact with Bob's band or trying to get some interaction and didn't get any. He was looking clearly stressed and had obviously a little trouble to get along with them.. As Guy said, it is obviously very loud on Bob's stage, so Mark maybe had some trouble with that, too. Left me pitiful to hear that, and
maybe that was the reason for only three songs together at that night, too?

I am 100 % sure that there is no problem for MK to play with Bob's band without preparing much. I think you get it all wrong. A musician of MK's caliber is perfectly capable of playing the relatively simple songs of Bob Dylan. If you have read GF's diary, you would have read that MK already knows the songs. The reason why MK prepare and arrange his own shows had nothing to do with what he is capable of or comfortable with, but with what he wants to do. What he likes. How he wants his own music to be performed and sound. It's like an ideology. And if you look at MK's face when he performs his own well rehearsed and prepared material, he doesn't look too comfortable unless he smiles, even though I bet he is.

Well, I have no doubt that MK is enjoying what he is doing at the moment, I was reporting about the Munich show, and as it fitted with my own observations form Oberhausen partially, I thought it worth writing about. I have no doubts about Mark's musical abilities, it was more about the circumstances, mainly the high volume on stage - and, if anything,  the missing interaction with the other band members which we know MK needs and loves so much.

Mossguitar, you are a musician yourself I understand, so I am sure you will have a much better judgment about it. I have never been on any stage myself.

It was very interesting when GF said that MK knows all of his (BD) songs. Maybe MK is a getalifer himself and collects all bootlegs of his bobness?  :D

Only kidding, but I assume that he is concentrating very hard on stage with Bob, being the perfectionist he is, I guess he doesn't feel THAT well with Bob's punkrock approach to his own songs.

I agree totally .... I had similar impressions. The overall sound was too loud ... especially Bob's guitar playing (or whatsoever that should be) and also his voice. Imo Mark's playing was difficult to hear. After the three songs there was no thanks from Bob to Mark ... on the contrary, Mark clapped Bob on the shoulder leaving the stage.  Very strange (unrespectful) behaviour from Bob ...

It's a few weeks since I saw the show, so I'm not certain about this, but I think Bob still uses old-school wedge monitors, as opposed to MK using in ear monitors for a long time now, a big difference on stage.

Do you really think that if Bob was not respectful, Mark would accept to play on stage anymore with him?
Yes maybe strange behaviour, non conventional, but should we interpret this as unrespectful from Bob?

in my view .... yes. Why can't be expected, that Bob says few words about Mark in front of the crowd ...  i.e after Mark enters or before Mark leaves the stage ? Would not be really difficult ... but respectful.

Seeing that Mark has known and worked with Bob on occasion since 1979...suffice it to say that I'm sure that he knows what to expect from Bob. Respectful or not (as it may appear to us) I'm sure that Mark is perfectly fine with it. As for him appearing uncomfortable on stage...he was probably watching the band members for the changes coming up.

the best part in oberhausen was where bob pulled back for like a minute or so, just watching his band...funny moment, as he really kinda "pulled out" and enjoyed the scenery..

absolutely not true, to date i know of only one taper who did not, on purpose (did not even go in to see that part) tape MK'S set and that would be a taper called "Spot" who actually taped the Dublin show, that we are all still waiting on (the MK set that is....)
all others, look at "Romeo, Schubert, Soomlos, Zimmy21" have all taped both sets, soomlos even with 2 devices!!

100 % agree with Pottel.
I think we've already got more recordings than expected ! And great ones !
Many famous dylan tapers also taped and shared MK.

Of course there are missing shows but we can't blame anyone.
Maybe for some reason the taper just couldn't tape MK's part.

dublin, bournemouth, both "SPot" as i explained he was not interested.
Mannheim was taped by a guy who also taped lux. and he taped MK there as well, so i do not worry. munich, ...where did you see that one??
ALL the other shows, were taped by MULTIPLE tapers who ALL did BOTH artists (yep, i love capitals...)
