I saw a video once of Chet and Paul where Paul played a guitar but with regular bass strings on the two top strings. Chet said, referring to the place they were performing, "You know, it's very economical to have a bass player and rhythm in one, especially when you play these places that don't pay much." Lovely sense of humor.
