A look through some of the YouTube clips reveals an excellent show including this very nice R&J with excellent outro solo (watch Danny giving an approving nod at the end):

Beautiful! It's up there with two of my favourite R&Js from this tour - Milan and Verona! :)

Wow, lovely version

Went to this last night. I've been purposely avoiding this forum and Guy's so as to have as much surprise as possible, but I have been reading Guy's tour diary. So I knew Once Upon a Time in the West was coming, and I had seen somethy somewhere about MFN being played again, and those were really the only "surprises" in the set, and I already knew about them 😐.
I did notice in a pic in Guy's diary that Silvertown was in the set, and since this is maybe my favorite song in Mark's solo catalog, I was pumped to hear it. Of course, he didn't play it. I found some clips of it from earlier in the tour this morning on YouTube, and really can't see why they dropped it. 🤷♂️
The show was well played, though, better than the Tracker show I attended. Having the two horns and Danny adds something. The middle of the set really drags however: Bacon Roll, Matchstick Man, Bonaparte, Heart Full of Holes, and YLT in a row! And no Silvertown, no So Far Away, no BIA, no Sultans, no Telegraph Road, no anything anyone wants to hear.

Yeah, that middle section completely doesn't make sense to me. I get that "rock n roll" isn't Mark's thing anymore, but this is just too sedate.

Agree totally with this. Especially as the band intro is now seemingly taking almost 10 minutes!!!

I actually don't mind the middle part of the set, in fact I really enjoy all of those songs mentioned, BUT, there is far too much talking and I have removed most of it from my downloads! ;)

I love that part of the set. Actually thats the kind of concerts from MK I'd like to see in the future. Small venue and his more intimate stuff. Something like Boothbay concert.

Totally agree with this. I have really enjoyed the smaller intimate gigs with The Master in the past...

I love those. Actually the most I play at home is just him, acoustic with a guitar or a few band members. Boothbay e.g.... I would pay so much just to see him two hours with 1 acoustic guitar..

The place where MK had played this concert makes me remember about this:

Not for my taste.
Would prefer a small venue with a 5 piece band swingin' and rockin'.

I'm not so sure. I think he feels and acts nervous these days hence the need for a larger backing band he's familiar with and can be confident in. For him to stand there with only a few other members and himself more in the spotlight is something I think he would dread now, almost as much as a live TV appearance.
-
is it even easier to play an acoustic guitar than an electric if you've having some physical problems? I mean, an acoustic is bigger and bulkier.
I don't play (wish I did), so I don't know :)

It depends. I think it is. The way Mark plays I think it is easier to play an acoustic. The subtile playing he does offers little room for mistakes since a wrong note or just a minor fault will result in a wrong sound. I as a guitar player find that when I play acoustic my room for tiny mistakes is a bit bigger. But that's when I speak for myself. It depends on the person, I know there are people who will not agree. :)

I hear what you are saying but funnily enough from experience he never came across as nervous at either Hay on Wye, Chalke Valley or Bridport....
He seemed to relax and enjoy each occasion

I was thinking of something similar to the band used for promos and playing songs such as those in the middle part of this set - the more intimate type of songs. :)

I doubt Mark has been nervous onstage for many many years, it's just the way he is, it's his demeanor, mannerisms, character etc.

I personally don't think he's nearly as confident in himself or in his playing as he used to be. He keeps looking at his fretboard for where to put his fingers when he used to play with his eyes closed. Also, on songs like YLT and OES he struggles to play the licks while singing at the same time; back in 1991-92 this wasn't an issue. In my mind he's definitely not as comfortable on stage these days.
-
He even wrote a song about it where he admits he's just a pale imitation of his younger self. At least that's my take on it.
I don't think I ever became half the man
That I used to be
The warrior captain
The bold pirate king of the sea
Nobody does me like I do
Or that's what they say to me
But I'm a pale imitation
I've been keeping my secret safe with me
He may no longer be a bold pirate (of guitar playing) but he still is the king of the sea in my books. :)

I had assumed that to be a "pale imitation" of one of his heroes like Chet, but of his younger self? That is an interesting interpretation, especially considering the last line. :think

Always interpretated this song as being about what is left of him nowadays compared to his younger self, never even thought about it possibly being meant in another way. This makes it a deeply personal and revealing song to me, very emotional and beautiful.

I think you are right. It’s just the way he is. But nervous? No, don’t think so. Just a bit shy maybe. And I am convinced he has brought a large band this time because he wants to, not because he needs to. And faults come though anyway, not least due to his incredibly loud guitars. But why bother about faults. That’s not what music is about at all IMO. It’s about the overall feel.
-
Exactly. Consider Tubular Bells, that has many mistakes, and even badly tuned guitars, Mike Oldfield admits this himself, but this is mainly to do with a lack of studio time, and having to make it quickly, but the point is, even with the errors, it's a classic album, when he re-made it in 2003 without mistakes, some fans didn't like it because it had lost some of it's soul. So, I agree, it's not what I worry about either.

I don't mean to suggest that I don't LIKE those songs. I just felt that the show was getting kind of sleepy through that section, and throwing in something rockier/uptempo in the middle of that stretch would help that out.
That said, hardly anyone goes to an MK concert and leaves saying, "Nice show, but I was really hoping to hear Marbletown". But loads of people walk out saying they wanted to hear Sultans or Tunnel of Love or Walk of Life or whatnot. He's only had a few "hits", mix in a few of them each show. Especially if, like in Sugar Land/Houston, you haven't played there in 30 years. We diehards have heard all that stuff a million times, but most of the people at the show haven't, I'd guess.

I'm one of those people who used to look forward to hearing Marbletown, but on this tour I was ready to let it go and I wanted a different set list. I have really enjoyed all of my concerts on this tour and haven't missed Marbletown, Sultans or TR at all. Of course, there are still some of the old songs left in there, but that's OK too, because they have largely been given a different arrangement.
Regarding Marbletown, it always received huge applause from the audiences, so I wouldn't knock it too much! ;)
