Okay it is so different. Like, so different.
A lot of people will have mixed feelings about this.
But I dig it. A lot.
Just out of interest, anyone found the song on any of the streaming services yet?

With Tracker they gave Spotify the finger. So nothing can be expected there.
What guitar do you think he plays in this song?LP as lead guitar, Strat for the rhythm stuff

Would also be a great opener for the 2019 tour!
basically it's Early Bird 2.0
basically it's Early Bird 2.0
Yes. As I said, Broken Bird. ;D
It's way better than Early bird...
That synths, that guitar, that break where MK is singing alone, that break with drums and percussion, when the sax suddenly comes and do a great solo...
My god... This song has everything, except pipes LOL
I LOVE IT

Yep. Way, way better. I loved it at first and it's actually growing on me! You can't not like this!!!
When the sax comes in it changes the mood of the song a little but then it changes back again. The song has so many layers to it. Guy's enjoying his new synths too and they sound great.
Love your enthusiasm, jbaent! ;D
I have just downloaded the whole song and have had just one listen so far. I feel it is a song that will grow and grow on me and they are the songs I prefer! Now back to a few more listens! :)

Again, any chance of a link from anybody! I'm a Knopfler freak currently living in Vietnam and can not buy for some unknown reason. A response from anybody and I will mention you in my will! Neville

What's the most legal way to share the song? I would do it, but I can't and don't want to write DMs to everybody.
After a couple of dozens of listens the song grows on me. Some things I still can't stand (DELAY :disbelief). But overall a very cool song!

This could be a great opener. The quick begin, middle percussion section, solo. IMHO ideal song to open a gig.

Haha that doesn’t mean if MK works on it then it could be.. I’m trying to be positive this time after hearing this! I have good hope.

In a studio you have all the time in the world and all the tricks. In live you have to do it all at the moment and work hard to play it.
I don't see it

Me too, guys, if anybody can... I'm kind of going crazy reading comments on something I can't listen to.. ???
As one of my,surprisingly, exes used to say:"Well that didn't last long!"
If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.
Cheers.
They are playing with our nerves. Giving first an information on the album then putting one song on line... And shortly after making everything disappear!! Don't you think that somebody from MK's Staff is doing that on purpose... ????
You are mistaken.
Nobody from MK's staff is giving any information.
All we know comes from commercial sites who have released info that they were not yet authorized to do.
And that's why info and download option have disapeared again very quickly.
Ok not a member of MK's Site I agree but it's anyway a very strange method. I don't get it.. Maybe it's because I never got the chance to download it. Seems to be a beautiful song.. Too bad...They are playing with our nerves. Giving first an information on the album then putting one song on line... And shortly after making everything disappear!! I understand but they can also put out a statement that the new album will be out on nov 2 ang give people the link for the download so they can already start making money...
How hard can it be......
Anyone got the lyrics yet? Think I managed to get most of them except for a couple at the start. Feel free to correct me.
Flash goes a little humming bird a dart and worried thread
At the screen door by his lemon tree out here with the quick and the dead
Designer blinds above LA frame the perfect view
It’s gonna be another day of sun and shameless blue
By his cut and block the time has come for the fruit there by the juicer
He grinds fresh coffee for himself he’s beaten our producer
LA Times lies on the stone warming there like bread
Hey what’s not to like out here with the quick and the dead
Good on you son, good on you
The Camden shuffle and the old one-two
Good on you son, good on you
Good on you son, good on you
The Camden shuffle and the old one-two
You wanna know what happiness is in his eye is a hunter’s gleam
Something to look forward to this cat’s gonna get the cream
Skin of a mango is so smooth it’s smoother than the devil
Cut it, slice it, chop it up to the rhythm of a cockney rebel
Back in Blighty there’s a flat on a grimy sink estate
That’s why he walked out of that and went to the Golden State
Left the backie and the beer where he was born and bred
Now he’s cutting it out here with the quick and the dead
Good on you son, good on you
The Camden shuffle and the old one-two
Good on you son, good on you
What would you have had him do
The Camden shuffle and the old one-two
How do you describe the song soundwise? How is mixing? Drums far on the back?
Hi guys,
If someone can PM me the song would be appreciated, want to know what are talking about here lol
Thank you
How do you describe the song soundwise? How is mixing? Drums far on the back?
Drums are not too far back, and it sounds like there's some room ambience mixed in with the drums. Overall the sound is slightly dry, but there's a lot of detail and layers, so I'm looking forward to playing the CD on my hifi. Mark's vocals have some kind of slapback echo, which I find a little artifical.
I think it's unlistenable but glad most of you are happy with it :)
I am surprised by this song. Positively. It is completely different from earlier ones. This modern electronics at the beginning. We've heard something similar (Basil) but here the scale is bigger. Mark is in great shape.I think you're right. Sounds like Mark's strato using Adrenalinn3 just like he used on Basil.
I think I hear a triangle in the mix too.
I love the part around 3'22 where the guitar leads into the sax - wonderful! :)

which parts of Basil is the adrenalinn?
The delayed notes in perfect tempo done with the MK signature. I think he used the same on first repetitive notes of Good on you son.I am surprised by this song. Positively. Do I detect a few notes of "Going Home" at 5'13?
After listening to it i have to say:

WOW WOW WOW

The chorus is a little bit meh, but the song in full is absolutly mind blowing!!!!!

Yet we already heard a song, know all the titles, the cover, and yet...
Who could be a magnificent soul, and could send the track on PM or email? I won't sleeeeeeep !! :)) Thank you and Vive MK !!
THANK YOU !! Got it !!! Great !!
What a refreshing track...it's like he has just let loose completely...it's everything mk doesn't normally do...and it's amazing!!!

A lot of Guy Fletcher in here I would say
Thank you very much, it's quite an unexpected song, I guess I'll have to listen quite a bit to let it grow on me...
Please come back to discuss it.
I’m listening to the 16/44 FLAC file which is CD quality. I also think it sounds a bit messy, with very little stereo spread. Also Mark's vocals are a bit buried and can be difficult to make out (well done to whoever published the full lyrics!). Although in theory what I purchased should be the same sound quality as what we will eventually hear on the album, I’m wondering if that’s really the case - Mark and Guy usually take a lot of care over sound.
On another matter, the song itself is growing on me with each listen, though it still feels a bit like several different songs - the intro not very connected to the main song, the drum break in the middle which is very unKnopflerish. The funky beat drives the whole thing along pretty effectively though.
Am I the only one who don't hear any female backing vocals? It seems to me the usual Knopfler-Fletcher armony.
Song still growing, by the way! :thumbsup

It's subtle. Listen around 3:19-20. On closer listen, though, it may just as well be male backing vocals, but it's not Mark or Guy.
The opposite of Heart of Oak in many ways: No depth at all, wether lyrically nor musically, overloaded but boring, too long, dull and uninspired, only disguised and covered with many funky gimmick stuff. Sax does not fit at all and turns out to be the major misconception in MK's recent work in general. A poor copy of Early Bird which was much more original and better. Probably pasted together on one afternoon. This obvious lack of inspiration makes me not exactly looking forward to the album with a lot of exitement. A cold shower after all this waiting. 3/10Lol, you must be fun at parties. Just kidding, everyone has the right to their opinion.

They are clearly tryin' to do something new. I give them ALOT of credit for that.
A poor copy of Early Bird which was much more original and better.A good think in Early Bird I: it was shorter (only 2"40 versus 5"37 for the second season)

What is the Camden shuffle anyway? And who may the Cockney rebel be, that Mark refers to? Ray Davies (Kinks)?
And who joined and toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel in the late 70's? A certain Guy Fletcher.
Camden Shuffle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ_yeBy-TNY
Cockney Rebel is a band with singer Steve Harley, best known for "Come up and see me, make me smile" :) Maybe Mark is referring to him, maybe another Cockney rebel! :)
Maybe it's just an old man doing his own thing! I hadn't heard of it before now! :)
I'm left wondering if MK considers Early Bird such an obscure song that he has no qualms resurrecting its rhythm & melody? Interesting.
So
It's somebody who has moved from a dodgy estate in London to California.
Could be a musician, a film maker (editing) or even a chef?!

Yeah. It doesn't appear very specific at first glance. We have Camden and Cockney. Then LA (California). We have the producer and screen door (film/TV?). Cutting block, juicer etc. could indicate TV chef?

Well it can be any kind like that yes. Ones that block noise or section areas in the studio? My mind was thinking beyond that really and into one of these huge trailers they give them too. Should've explained.
I took it as a screen door leading into the person's garden (nearby the lemon tree). They guy is at his home overlooking LA.
Could the Camden shuffle be connected to boxing? "The Camden shuffle and the old one two"? Boxers shuffle their feet. Just a thought. :think

the album is a slight diversion from those before...

I'm guessing it's about movie director Robert Day. He left England for Hollywood in the 60's and died last year.
His last film was called "The quick and the dead". He also made a Tarzan movie.

Well, many Californians are obsessed with healthy living, organic food, freshly-ground coffee, etc. As opposed to the "baccy and beer" mentioned elsewhere in the song.
Robert Day was born in Sheen (East Sheen is a London suburb), He directed "Rebel" and "The Quick and the Dead". He moved to Hollywood in the 60s. Could it be him? :think

Really like this song, quite different to what I was expecting, a bit more mainstream sounding and funkier, but I welcome that. Catchy chorus and nice beat all the way through

I had a chance to listen to the track on my proper hifi system. That makes a huge difference. The various instruments and elements are wonderfully laid out with lots of space. Guy's synths and keys go far outside the physical speaker boundaries, so you get a very wide soundstage. Funnily enough the keyboards don't feel so prominent that way. When you listen to a lesser system, things feel more congested.
Very much looking forward to the rest of the album, and very much so from an audiophile point of view.

Absolutely true. I listened yesterday through my custom made in ear monitors and the stereo is amazing. It really sounds less compressed than through cheaper headphones. I like it better then. But I always like it better when I listen through a quality system..

Does that mean that playing with microphone positions for three years was worth it? :lol

So, Interpretations? What's it about? What does it say? A guy from the UK sits in LA now having a healthy breakfast. So what?

I love the part around 3'22 where the guitar leads into the sax - wonderful! :)

We know that Mark often hides a very personal deeper meaning behind a song's obivous superficial story told in the foreground.
For instance Broken Bones is not just another (third) song about boxing or Sonny Liston but about his personal attitude/approach at getting older).
Sometimes it can take years to get to that real meaning, sometimes we don't get there at all.
So patience is required.
It for sure is not just a simple song about a guy leaving for the sunshine state to make his way.
We have already discussed at length whom the person might be.

Thank you.
At the moment I still work out the story im the foreground. So it is HIS store... (he grinds a coffee by HIMSELF) and the LA Times lying around. Right?
The Sax part could literally be just putting on the music System when opened in the morning.
And the hunter's gleam in his eye shows that he is here at this place because he had the WILL of exactly having this.
Does Cockney Rebel has any other meaning than the band's name? As he listens to the rhythm of A
cockney rebel..

Wow, son, you made it, coming a long way from the backie and the beer to have a diner in sunny California? Good on you son!
This is one of my favourite moments... when new songs come out and LE starts digging about their meaning... many times it makes the song to be better when you understand it!
Wow, son, you made it, coming a long way from the backie and the beer to have a diner in sunny California? Good on you son!
I don't think he is in a restaurant; rather that he's at home, and that the lemon tree is in his garden. He has a home overlooking LA.

Together with "meeting" a producer it would make much more sence indeed. So actor or Musician.

Possible lyric correction: Should
"He grinds fresh coffee for himself he’s beaten our producer" be
"He grinds fresh coffee for himself he’s meeting a producer"?

Makes more sense. I'll change it on page 5, or whatever. Sometime the harder you listen to it the more obscure it sounds! :hmm

I don't know anything about Simon Cowell's background but he's clearly not a cockney and I don't think he sounds like he grew up on a grimy council estate.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Winstonereally like the guy. great in sexy beast with Ben Kingsly as well.
Ray Winstone, amateur boxer.
But I love the sound of mk’s voice, I love the guitars (the blue Pensa, PensaGhost?),
I do think there’s a slightly 'phasey' processing on his voice which I don’t find entirely natural.
With all these opinions of yours in mind - crappy sax, chessy synth etc. - I listened with no great expectations, but: Mr. Knopfler shows with this track, that he is still alive and kicking. What a fresh sounding song and what a good, well-sorted production - a good, even perhaps great Pop song. After the mostly dull Singles of the last Albums - True Love, Border Reiver, Redbud tree and Beryl - this is really a vital sign.
However, I don't think, we will hear this song llive.

BR is far from dull. It's one of the fastest songs he's made.
I can only assume you never heard it live as the opener. Maybe the best opener ever.

I never heard it live, but when I heard the single, I was very excited. Unfortunately, the rest of Get Lucky didn't match my expectations. Same with Beryl and Tracker also.
I remember Get Lucky being the first song we heard from that album? Don't know about official "single" though.
Much prefer Beryl to Good on You Son, opinions opinions. :)

Yes, Get Lucky was the first song we heard in MK.com site, not sure if it was "a single"...
Beryl has that DS sound, but I find that the lyrics are a little bit silly specially when it's supposed he's trying to do a homage to Beryl, but looks a little childish to me.
Good on you son, for me is so surprising that wins the best single prize since "Boom like that".

I can't believe that I loved him as Will in Robin of Sherwood as I loved the whole series and that he is in Departed, one of my all-time-favourites and never made the connection that he is the same guy. :lol
So how probable is it? I asked Guy about it already but his answer was not clear. "Absolutely not" ...

I have Problems with Guy's answer. How do you understand it? I asked if it really would give too much away also and wonder how he means it to be honest

Did any of you read anything about a videoclip for this song?
A Spanish friend told me he read about it somewhere but can't remember where...
A British boxer gtow up poor that got successful and ended in LA and doing films?
What is the "note out of time" that everyone is talking about? Everything sounds perfectly in time to me.

At around 34s into the song just before the band kicks in.

Hmm, if you mean that D# which is slightly delayed with respect to how he does it the first time, that's definitely on purpose (and I love it).
If instead it is one of those last 3 notes before the band... I'm not able to tell that they're out of time ???
We will probably never know, but, I mean, come on:
1) the "out of time" note lands perfectly on time in its own beat
2) it's a dead simple lick that you could play even if you didn't ever touch a guitar in your lifetime
3) it is basically the textbook definition of syncopation
4) it sounds great
I mean, come on. He likes pipes, but he's still Mark.

I think it's because of the "first take" situation, every musician of every level brags about first take recording, as if the listener cares how many times you've played the song before finally recording it. I'm pretty sure these things comes not on purpose, but purely because first take is better than trying to re-record something and just to leave thing "as is".
What about a third song about the same person? Good on you Son(ny) ;)

Man, looks like Mark were a boxer in the past life, so many songs about boxers. What is all about, anyway? Two people bashing each other in the head?
Radio in my country, Italy this song not played much, not in playlist in major Radio like rtl or capital, Is on air in your country radio? :thinkA bit early to make such a statement no?

In the first moment I thought it was Early Bird :o
I really love the way MK delivers the line "the Camden shuffle and the old one two" ! Makes me smile! ;D:thumbsup
Oh, boy, that was harsh.
I get what you're saying, and more than once, GF''s keyboards have put me off. Not so much the synth stuff, but more the organ sounds, for instance on Beryl. Terrible.
But, although the new single is not my favorite, and never will be, I welcome a change. We've been force-fed whistles, pipes and citterns for a long time now.
By the way, have you listened to Ry Cooder's new album? His son Joachim is a wizard with ambient sounds and computer stuff. The new album combines those sounds with folksy material in a clever way.
No gap here ... and I think he sings it perfectly well. Timing and phrasing on vocals have always been excellent with MK and I don't detect a mistake here.:thumbsup

Have you checked different sources of the song? Could it be a mistake? I really cannot detect anything wrong here.

Just out of interest, anyone found the song on any of the streaming services yet?
With Tracker they gave Spotify the finger. So nothing can be expected there.
Now that we have had a chance to listen to all these other songs, how do you like GOYS? Has your opinion changed?
For me the initial surprise and positive reaction has cooled some, and this could become a skipper after some time. I don't in no way think it's a bad song, but it leaves me a little cold compared with the others.
I always thought that thread was the flying path of the bird... as he is so small and fast and you can hardly follow with your eyes ...
LE
Given that Guy said on his forum that they had worked on this track for a year has anyone made a connection to the horrific massacre by Stephen Paddock at the Manderlay in LA... a whirring thread, the quick and the dead, designer blinds above LA...
I know MK likes to write character songs and (just to be clear) not for a second am I suggesting this song is about that horrific evil where so many people tragically lost their lives at a country music festival. I just wonder if it was somehow playing on MK's mind and he dealt with it by writing an upbeat and positive song set in LA? Just a thought.
This thread is 30 pages long already and I haven't read it all but I'll be surprised if it hasn't been noticed this song is about Woody Strode.

I hadn't thought of it like that. Doesn't quite work for me though. (Edit to add: oh... i see what you mean, the wing-flapping and whirring flight path of the tiny little bird being so fast it is like a squiggly and random little piece of thread. Interesting.)
I still think though that perhaps the thread could be a bird feeder hanging from his lemon tree suspended from a very thin thread which is spinning as the darting bird feeds? Interesting that the whirring sound is externalised from the apartment of the character in the song. There are other references to sound and sounds within the songs on the album. 'When You Leave', for example. Anyway... the hummingbird is out by his screendoor. I also like to think the thread could be a thread such as this on an internet forum? The whirring of mouse wheels as people try to elucidate the exact meaning? Haha! At any rate, it is a very interesting opening lyric. Perhaps the producer the central character is going to meet is... himself. That old thing about us being the producers, directors and actors of our own lives.

And how would you bring him together with this ...
Back in Blighty there’s a flat
On a grimy sink estate
That’s why he walked out of that
And went to the Golden State
Left the baccy and the beer
Where he was born and bred
Now he’s cutting it out here
With the quick and the dead
With "Blighty" being slang for Great Britain? ;D :think

1. Hailwood was a super motorbike racer from the UK.
2. After winning pretty much everything in Europe he won his first race in the US in California (Golden State).
3. There's a picture of another famous racer Barry Sheene riding Hailwood's Ducati on the internet - and for some reason cockney rebel is tagged on it (https://www.mortonsarchive.com/v/photos/94058bgp/18448508804/x2012-barry-sheene-bookazine-classic).
4. Lemon Three Passage Rd seems to be a motorbike racing spot in Newcastle.
And the most important one...
5. There's a doc on Formula 1 from the 1970's called "The Quick and the Dead" starring... Mike Hailwood.
Considering Mark's passion for the sport I tend to believe it makes a whole lot of sense.

Interesting thoughts but I still don't think it's correct, doesn't fit with the mango, meeting a producer etc
Did he ever live in LA? Would he be meeting a producer?
I'm not being argumentative here by the way, I want to know too :)
