Hi!
Just a few words from blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa on Mark Knopfler's Stratocaster skills. In his opinion Mark is the number five best Stratocaster player in the world. He actually gives credit to David too...

Is that real fandom? Turning up the volume when the Sultans part is played from a radio show like this, after having heard it a bazillion times? And feeling so proud and loving this track as if it was a brandnew one, just released last week? I must admit I truly love Sultans of Swing! (surprise, eh?)
Had a little "discussion" with two friends lately when we were about to go to the cinema and I was late, just HAD to listen to a certain Live version of Sultans of Swing until the end first before going.. never would have felt the need to turn the song off in the middle.. .they both said nothing but their looks said it all.. (weirdo.) ;)

Nice topic, thank you for sharing this Jarle. I'm a fan of both artist, ofcoure they make totally diffrent music. Actually MK doesn't make real bluesrock but beautiful folkrock.
-
Cool to hear him say he'd love to jam with mark someday, at the end of this, great, but way too short audio show.
-
It's funny, it's Fathers Day here in Australia and my beautiful daughter gave me a rolling stone 100 greatest artists magazine as a pressie.. if course not a mention of DS or the Knop :(
I say often to love Knopfler is to be alone in this world!
I know his music has never been cool, but you think the multitudes of classic songs would necessitate some respect?
Rant over - thanks Bonamassa.
-
Actually Knopfler was cool on 1985...
-
Great interview! And not just for the MK mention.

Funny you should ask, I pulled a muscle in one of my fingers opening a bottle a few weeks ago (almost better now) when I was at the Edinburgh Festival one day. Could have been doing with you there! ;)

Well we both enjoyed the concert but to be honest we both feel that we are so blessed to have such a marvellous musician and lyricist in the one and only MK.
Although Joe is an outstanding guitarist, the music was pretty much the same from start to finish and although the guitar playing was fantastic, it really was very repetitive.
Looking forward very much to next Friday - In fact Can't wait.......
PS: Cant believe I fell for it but I bought a Blu-ray last night at the show and it is Joe at the RAH in 2009 and features a guest appearance of some old bloke called Eric Clapton! Needless to say I shall fast forward that bit!!!!!!! Come on MK Lets be having you and Joe together!!!

By the sounds of things it won't be long before I will be able to open another bottle or two for you!!!
Here's to the next tour - whenever that will be....

Glad to hear that you and Mrs Knopflerfan enjoyed the concert! I downloaded Joe's 2009 concert at the RAH from YouTube and just like you, I was impressed with his guitar playing and I enjoyed a lot of the songs, especially Sloe Gin, but after a while I began to feel that everything sounded very similar, unlike MK's music which is varied.
I'm sure you bought the blue-ray just for Eric, though, didn't you, Knopflerfan! ;D
PS Have a good time on the 27th. I will be thinking of you all and wishing I was there with you! :wave

Yes Sloe gin is a fine tune with lovely guitar UNTIL Joe cranks the footpedal and lets rip!! I personally cannot stand too much distortion effect on a guitar!!
Oh and yes I bought the Blu-ray especially for the Clapton bit - NOT!!!!! ;D
See you soon :wave

Shame MK doesnt do the same sort of thing like Joe has just done....
I've just literally bought two of the four available 'tour de force' blu-rays from Joe's 'mini-tour' in London in March - they are amazing....
Nice gimmick having the 3D glasses for the amazing photographs in the booklet....

This days I bought and listened to the blu-ray "An acoustic evening at the Vienna Opera House" ... absolutely fantastic and amazing. Personally I love it a bit more than the London RAH 2013 concert, which contains 8 songs from this acoustic set.
... give this concert a try

Funny.
5 minutes ago I ordered the DVD. ;D
Joe is brillant. Also the 4 Tour de Force DVDs
-
congrats ;D ... you will not be disappointed.
-
All four of the 'tour de force' Blu-rays are exceptional and to get back on topic it would be good to hear both guitar 'gods' together wouldn't it!

Have you changed your mind about Joe being repetetive now, Knopflerfan? ;D

Oh yes very much so Val!
Having seen him 'Live' and then having had time to listen/watch more of his material - He is awesome and some talent that shouldn't be underestimated!

Joe is a very technical guitar player, but his voice doesn't do the trick for me...

All I can say is give it time and listen and listen to him more and more and I think in time his voice grows on you... Mind you he makes up for it with the guitar though!!
My wife still reckons Joe sounds like 'Kermit the frog' and even looks like him on the Tour de force Blu-rays at the start where he is wearing a mac and cap and filming in and around London! ;D
