Whats seating capacity of the Bill Graham ?
Seems like a smaller venue than the previous 3 arenas in Vancouver, Seattle, Portland.
-
Looked it up.
"While 1915 advertisements boasted a seating capacity of 10,000, the current Civic Auditorium serves as the city

Of course. Not sure why that has the exclamation mark Potsy, that has been played most shows hasn't it?

Hi Dusty
I think it is to show Kingdom of gold and Daddy's gone to knoxville were the changed tracks from the previous show?
:think
-
Ahm, I was looking at Pottel's post now and found KoG, which can only be Kingdom of Gold??? And that one hasn't been played before if I am not mistaken?
So why not giving it TWO exclamation marks?? Pretty amazing to hear a new song after all...

Ah right, thanks.

I hope to hear it... but I also hope that YTC (the best thing since Speedway) is not dropped early !!

I can't imagine next year if YYC is not played in Paris... :(

I wish I could put my thoughts in a few sentences to describe how brilliant the performance was last night !!!! Fantastic would be an understatement for both Mark 's and Bob's. :thumbsup
First off, standing in line for a good 3 hours with the strong intention of getting to the front did pay off at the end. So, again last night, I secured a slightly less perfect spot than the night before at the front next to the rail. Another fun thing about going to Geneal Admission is you get to engage in conversations with perfect strangers who share your passions in music. Everbody feeds of everybody's else. Let me tell you, I've taked with countless numbers of Dylan's get a lifers, who just couldn't stop praising Mark and the band for the briliant performance last night. It was vibrantly full of energy, at some points riveting.
I'm talking about Marbletown when John and Glen faced off on their instruments.
The auditorium was completely filled up with happy faces as far away as my eyes could see. The thunderous roars and vigorous cheers from fans across every age spans could be heard miles and miles away.
I have the recordings both audio and video to proove my case. You sometimes forget how wonderful the shows you saw the previous nights, weeks , years were , until you listen to them again. That's just what I did when I got up this morning. Die-hard Dylan's fans many of whom I struck up conversations with simply couldn't stop marvelling about Mark's guitar performance . Many said they could just listen to it all night long. It couldn't be further from the truth. Many neutral concert goers I talked with whole hearted embracing Mark's music over Dylan's. That made me really happy.
Mark got out a guitar last night that was shiny grey. I don't remember which song. I don't think I've ever seen it before. I have to go back to the video to see which song he played on it last night.
OK. Highlight of the show last night had to be "Kindom of Gold" I like the song a lot on the album. Mark nailed it last night "LIVE" It was soooo sensational , it moved me to tears. ( I've never been to MK's concerts where I don't cry!) :'( "Kingdom of Gold" did it for me !!!!! :'( :'( :'(
To sum it up. It was a fabulous show ! loades of energy. They were all on fire. Excellent synergy between Mark and the band. The crowds really loved it when Ian came out with the washboard. It was fun ! :thumbsup :clap
Ladies : Mark fitted himself last night with same attire. Black jeans, black T, Black shirt. Did I forgot to say he had on a pair of brown Quality Shoes. ;)
I did manage to record this show from beginning to end audio and video . Great sound quality on audio. You guys will love it. It has to be next week when I get round to sort all my tapings. I have 2 more shows to go to . Tonight and tomorrow.
Dylan's show was so enjoyable and extremely fun. The band was in high gear so was Bob last night. He smiled , he pranced around, banged away on the piano in between the harmonica. The crowds went absolutely wild. There was no end to all the dancing, and screaming. It was so rejuvenating, it made you feel like you are in your teens again. He rocked the night away that was for sure. I absolutely had a tremendous time hanging out with cool Dylan's folks.
:thumbsup :clap
Contrary to all the nonsense of press reviews of people walked away from Dylan's, I didn't see that happened, not around me. Who knows ??
-
Sounds like you had a great show.
Dylan can be hit and miss.
It could depend on where you are in the venue.
For example in Vancouver, Mark's sound was amazing, but the sound of Dylan's was horrible.
The couple beside me walked out, and they were Dylan fans.
I think he was too stoned that night ... Not sure.
In Seattle, he was a bit better, his vocals were better, and sound was better,
but there were still some songs that were unintelligible, and I am a Dylan fan too,
and know the words....
In Portland he was better than Seattle, but still some horrible sounding piano playing...
-
You think he uses to be stoned on stage (still)?
LE
-
You think he uses to be stoned on stage (still)?
LE
Not sure, it could be he is too old or too much brain damage from previous years,
or its just Dylan. He is an enigma. A brilliant lyricist, but he really cant play music well,
and his vocals sometimes are very rough.
And before the Dylan fans come down on me, I am a Dylan fan too, but more of a Mark Knoplfer fan....
Guy I sat beside in Portland, said in the 80's Dylan came out for a show, was completely drunk or stoned, only played 1 song, was booed, and then walked off mad. That was the end of the show. The fans didnt get their money back either.
I like to think I am objective, but Dylan really sucks some nights.
Other nights he can be great. His band is awesome. Charlie S e x ton is a great guitar player.
-
Hi Sweetsurrender! Thank you for your great review and also for the videos, etc. I'm glad you had a good time at the show. :)
About the brown shoes - I remember being only a few feet away from MK at the Hay-on-Wye book-signing for Kitty's book. MK was dressed entirely in black - jeans, T-shirt, zipped cardigan and BROWN shoes! ;D I think he must really like brown shoes! ;D
-
I heard similar story about Dylan. I think last night he was particularly in a good spirit compared to the night before. He mentioned San Francisco and the crowds went berserks. For me a man in his 70's, I have to give a lot of credits to him. I wish I had discovered him generations before. Well. later than never.
And Yes, Charlie, he's a heart-throb and a great guitar player to boot. Is the guy on Bass name is " Tony"? I like the way the band dress. Very cool.
-
bassist Tony Garnier.

Sweetsurrender, it sounds like you're having the time of your life. Thanks for your detailed reviews including, most importantly, what MK was wearing. Black jeans, huh ??? I like it :-*
-
Thnx for your recording efforts.
-

Yeah ! I had a time of my life. The jeans and T looked like the ones he wore yesterday. The shirt had different patterns. Same Brown quality shoes. He must have many same shirts ???
Mark looked like he was in very good spirit, smiled a lot. They must have a pretty restful time in SF in 80's F weather. Told a little line about Guy with his cheap Bazuki etc. Oh, don't let me get into the facial expressions last night. All I could say was " double/triple WOWS" It will suck today as I'll be rows away. :( >:( :'(
Pottel:
Not a problem. The recordings are my treasures that I'll happily share with everyone. A nice guy offered to put the recorder in his pocket so it wouldn't record too much of my happy screams ! :lol I video recording myself, but the quality kind of sucked eventhough I was up front. Time to maybe look for a better one.

Ahhhh !! This is what I was missing... So, now I know why Kingdom of Gold replaced YTC: both songs have in commun to feature an outro guitar solo which is not present on the album ! gorgeous !
Please, don't cut the songs like this, so frustrating ;)... I'm kidding, I am grateful of course for those nice videos !
Did you check Guy's forum ? He says that Kingdom is developping into something extraordinary and will be definitely be played next year ! Hopefully it won't be at the expense of YTC...
Guy seems to be more open about setlist questions now btw :)

I know I'm frustrated myself with the way it's recorded. The quality wan't too great either. You'rer right on about the outro guitar solo. It was unreal. I'm sure both songs will be played interchangably. You just have to go to multiple shows for that.
-
Sweetsurrender, thanks again ! I can't wait for the audio recording, especially of 18th with Kingdom of Gold, any chance to upload it this week-end ? :) and can we have a bit more details about it, what kind of equipment did you use, which row, etc... ? if your equipment is as good as soomlos and your recording has similar quality as the fantastic Saskatoon show it will be heaven !! Saskatoon for a dream version of YTC and SF for a dream version of Kingdom of Gold ! then we'll have everything... I doubt they play a new one after that.
Actually on each album there is a great song that should have been played live by all accounts, but was not: Silvertown blues, The Ragpicker's dream, 5.15am, Punish the Monkey, So Far From the Clyde... This year it has to be Dream of a Drown Submariner :( too bad....

I'll do my best. I'm going to Sacramento for my last show tonight :'( Earliest I could get my hands on sorting out all the recordings will be Monday. The quality is good on the audio for "KOG" Guy's answer to my question about how extraordinary "KOG" was, couldn't be reaffirmed more. I guess I got LUCKY to be their on that extraordinary night.

Mark seems to have some "troubles" with his pedal board ? he seems to switch several times during the solo on KOG
so many years he didn't use a pedal board on stage...maybe doesnt' he remember how it works ? ;D
Guy said he will give some details about it, but we're still waiting....
-
Well, it is a solo. Is it great? (expected answer after some bashing: EVERY solo from MK is great don't you know). However, nice attempt to make the song more "lively". McGoldricks contribution is really good in my opinion. Still one of my three least favourite tracks on the album. Nice to see some setlist changes, bearing in mind that this is the tenth show already.

i think some folks here should sell the MK tickets and go to "the straits" :P

Hi,
Kingdom of Gold !!!! what a great job, what a wonderful solo and what a beautiful job from Glenn and the vocals too.... too much things, and finaly the blue Pensa is there ! BRAVO and thank you sweetsurrender for sharing the video

Although it isn't my favourite from the album, I think Kingdom Of Gold is the best sounding live song from Privateering so far. It sounds beautiful, and I really enjoy that outro solo... :)
-
There's nothing remarkable about negative comments - it's called reception. AMIT assembles a lot of people that are deep into MK's music, some of them for years or decades - they follow him from album to album and from tour to tour - which allows them to have a more differentiated view then let's say an experienced journalist who has a pile of new records to listen to and writes a few quick lines about Privateering after the first listen.
If Privateering evokes not only positive but also negative comments, then it's okay and even precious - we are not here to pray to the one and only God MK, even if it seems so lately, referring to some (new) posters since a few weeks.
Of course you can say this: MK can sit on a chair and read the phone book, and I will fall on my knees and tell everyone how genius he is. But then we are not any different to let's say,... Justin Bieber fans.
Differentiated view must be allowed. And if you tally all posts since release, I think it is not too bad after all. For me, there's a lot to like and some minor that I don't like. As it is such a long record, there is more working surface. Nice! :thumbsup I might point out that this is a positive view!
My current list:
SAILING TO PHILADLPHIA, THE RAGPICKER'S DREAM, both masterpieces, same league
GET LUCKY, best album feel in general, not a single bad song
SHANGRI-LA, rich, great lyrics, wide spectrum, good and warm feeling overall
PRIVATEERING, still growing, but some "mistakes" in approaching the material imho, phantastic soundwise of course
GOLDEN HEART and KILL TO GET CRIMSON not really bad, but compared to the other masterpieces a little weaker in my opinion
LE
-
I think these new versions of CBC sound good - much better than last years ones. The only other new songs I like are HA and Crows and they haven't really nailed Crows live yet IMO. I do wish they (or do I mean Mark :think) had chosen other songs from Privateering to play like: Submariner, Seattle, Bluebird or Radio City. I suppose you couldn't perform these on cruise control. ;D
-
I Used To Could is good rocking indeed. BUT (there's always a BUT) Jim's piano cannot replace the cool harmonica part from the album and sounds therefore a little uninspired. But Mark has great fun to play it, no doubt. Best rocker since Boom, Like That.
I think they chose a lot of different tracks from the album, which is nice. And I still think it is remarkable to hear a new tune at the tenth show, so "late" in the tour. At recent tours, Mark had started to form the definite set list at this time of tour. So we might be in for some other surprises, and dmg, you might be able to listen to some of the requested songs... ;)
As I look at this tour for just another big rehearsal for 2013, I am looking forward to it in general.

Interesting what you just said about the missing harmonica, LE! You were probably writing your post (above) when I was listening to IUTC for the first time! I called my husband over to have a listen to Jim's piano and although it sounds great, we both thought it would be great to hear that amazing harmonica in the song. In any case I liked it a lot.
I also have just finished listening to Sonny Liston and I remember hearing it played live in Edinburgh 2005 with Danny on drums. That was when I became a fan of Danny's drumming - he astonished me that night - everything was spot-on! I thought it just couldn't get any better - until now! I take back my sceptiscism of Ian, for SL at least, because his drumming on this song sounds amazing! :)

I think YTC is absolutely fantatisc on the Saskatoon recording. Great outro solo. Same thing for KOG, there are the 2 highlights so far.
I too would have love Submariner/Seatle/Radio City (but not bluebird). Don't think they are more complicated that the ones chosen though.

Ian does a great job on stage
no surprise for me, he is one of the best drummers out there

GET LUCKY, best album feel in general, not a single bad song
SHANGRI-LA, rich, great lyrics, wide spectrum, good and warm feeling overall
PRIVATEERING, still growing, but some "mistakes" in approaching the material imho, phantastic soundwise of course
GOLDEN HEART and KILL TO GET CRIMSON not really bad, but compared to the other masterpieces a little weaker in my opinion
LE
last days I tried to listen to albums "in pairs"
My english is not very good, so I have more focused on the overal sound /music /mood /production, rather than lyrics, but I found that these "pairs" of album fit very well :
SAILING TO PHILADLPHIA / SHANGRI-LA : "clear" sound, aerian, atmospheric, etheral
THE RAGPICKER'S DREAM / KILL TO GET CRIMSON : acoustic, intimist, quiet, nostalgic
GOLDEN HEART / GET LUCKY : lot of LP with celtic sounds
PRIVATEERING disc 1 / PRIVATEERING disc 2 ;D
for DS :
album one / Communique : obviously.... ;)
making movies /love over gold : well not the smae style, but you can hear the links, and the "natural" progression in Marks' composing/production/writing
BIA / OES :again not the same style, but a little bit same "sound production" in the 80-early90 style
of course : NHB / neck and neck
as for ATTR (which I love) : I'd put it with STP and SL

Ian Thomas is stunning....imo superior to Danny and adds more power and drive to the rythym section
+1
The outro of Privateering from Saskatoon! It sounds like he's slapping the skins with a massive hand!! :clap
Plus MK has a Welshman back in goal.
Yeah, whatever happened to Gary Sprake?

sweetsurrender, as mentioned in the other thread, pls do mention in your uploads that you converted the original (?) file from mp3 to flac. it is important that this is listed, otherwise someone will share your version somewhere without that info and the "gene" pool becomes diluted.
just an "info" thing.

I have to say that I like the Sweetsurrender recordings even they dont sound so good than Soomlos or other tapers...
And I like them because they sound so real, so like we were there, with the venue acoustics echo and distorsion... I felt like I was there with that sound.
Love it!!!!
Thanks Sweetsurrender :clap

Thank you Sweetsurrender for this recording - listening now! :thumbsup

Thanks, jbaent. I'm glad you enjoy the recordings. I've been listening to them since.
I have a question regarding files to be uploaded to the tracker. The rules said no mp3. That's why I converted all the files into flac. Now, people are telling me to keep the files in mp3. I'm a little bit confused. Could somebody clarify this for future uploads?
I seemed not to be able to get to MKlive website. Anyone with a link?
Thanks,

As mentioned, as long as there's no other source, then there is no harm in uploading mp3 sourced files, but it needs to be mentioned so no one can later unknowingly share lossy files whilst claiming they are lossless. Hence it is better to simply keep them as is and explain it In the info file.

superval,
you're very welcome ! Nothing like listening to the recordings that you attend. There's a emotional attachment to it. You know, you were there. It really fortified your experience even more. :)

" it didn't happen if it wasn't recorded" ;)

Should I still upload Berkeley? There are 2 on the tracker which I believe are more superior quality wise. Let me know.

I was again listening to HFB and I think is URGENT for us to have another official live album from the solo years!!! HFB live version, for instance, must come to life to general public!
-
Thank you Sweetsurrender for this recording
Yep, sweetsurrender, you did a very good job on here! Thanks for sharing not only the files, but also your impressions about the shows!

HFB is my most favorite Mark' s solo. To hear it LIVE is beyond words. I think Mark played best in Sacramento.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before, but Daddy's gone to Knoxville is played in a different tuning as in one of the first shows. A lot higher!

Very funny introduction by Paul Crockfor in this concert...
He usually says "Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome back to "City", Mark Knopfler"
In this concert he says "Good evening San Francisco..." and when he

Newsflash: PC's jackets are now competing with Krusty's PA system to see which is the loudest!
Funny ! :clap
Believe it or not, I didn't notice it after listening about 100th times. I'll go back to it later.

sweetsurrender, if you can, upload your recording as well. Maybe there is something adding to the charm of the already existing recordings. Let us decide! And thanks again for the time you spend to learn to upload and the uploading itself. I am still waiting for the private lessons from Pottel!

vgonis,
I've uploaded all 3 shows in the tracker with the exception of Berkeley. And yes, I did catch PC announcement and a lttle laugh from him. But guess what at the show, you just couldn't catch everything. That's why recordings are so valuable. :thumbsup :clap
