Et tu Brutus?

Yes I have said so in previous posts, but if your name is Dylan, the copyright has expired and add some new lyrics then you can claim it your own. Led Zep were much earlier. And they actually credit "Minnie" as well for this number! And it sounds pretty darn different.

Well, you learn something new every day, as they say!    Of course, it is stated on Modern Times (at least the one I have) as "all songs written by Bob Dylan, but I hadn't actually looked into this particular song, because I hadn't heard the original, unlike the rest of songs on MT which I recognised from elsewhere - I should have dug a bit deeper!

I just listened to the Memphis Minnie version and it sounds wonderful - on Dylan's version it is easy to detect from where it originated, unlike the Led Zep version, which is completely removed from the original!   The Led Zep version is great and full marks to them for crediting "Minnie" - it's a pity Dylan doesn't do the same when he "borrows" from other songwriters.

yes but on the other hand, led Zep did'nt credit "willie Dixon" for you need love on "whole lotta a love", so maybe the Memphis Minnie credit  is a little repentance  ;)

the leeve breaks Led Zep version is awesome IMHO. the drums were recorded in an unsual way :

Actually the case with Dixon came up later. And they settled out of court in the 80ies. If you search for Led Zep plagiarism in youtube you will find all the cases. I still think Zeppelin are great, and Dylan too, but the case is that you should  name your direct "references", copyright or not. It is quite different from influences. This one for example: jake holmes - dazed and confused  http://youtu.be/pTsvs-pAGDc

I guess xfactor's main audience is different. They are not in it for the music, but for the show. All a mind game. They just have some music qualities to talk about, but nothing more than you can learn to tell apart in a conservatorium or a decent music school. How about raw performance, mistakes and all, but heart and soul.

Actually, when I was listening to the girls' version, something else similar was nagging at me!    It was "Joy" by Lucinda Williams from her terrific album "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" - something about the guitar riff.

As far as I recall, Led Zep were obligated to include many credits to old tracks because they played many many songs based on old blues, they had many legal problems because of that.

Didn't remember the Lucinda song, even though I had the "car wheels..." in my player when it was released. But i gave it a look at youtube and it certainly is a modern blues song!

Zeppelin sold gazillion records. They had the money and in most case, if not all, they settled out of court. Some credits were given in later releases, but not that many. And this is an ethical matter, not only for money. The songs musically were quite different for the common ear and only the fact that they were careless to include whole phrases in the songs, gave them away. eg.The Lemon song lifts a whole Robert Johnson catch phrase" Squeeze my lemon...", but is really a completely different song. But dazed and confused? Nobody's fault but mine? As I said, I really don't care about it in an artistic way. I get my kicks, original or not, if it is good. But the new artists should mention the original composers, as a "hats off" (and Zeppelin actually wrote a song for Roy Harper, called Hats off to Roy Harper, so they felt the need and understood the value of such gestures) And really it is a logical issue. If I play (or "compose") a Dylan or Zeppelin song that they have copyrighted as being their own, shouldn't I expect a legal action against me? But this is all a nice conversation. They don't listen to us and they keep at it.

I dont think so.   According to a post on Guy's forum, SFA was played after Marbletown, as usual.

"Fantastic show in Broomfield last night. After Marbletown and before the encore of So Far Away, there was a look of joy among the band that resembled a group of thieves delighted in their recent haul. What was going on there? "

Guy:  Oh that would be telling

dmg, we are older and don't get the thrill of it all anymore. But see  the "added bonus" episodes with the famous people, they are quite fascinating, if not funny. Dudley Moore, Rodger Moore, John Cleese, Alice Cooper, Paul Simon and the list goes on for miles and miles... Unfortunately no MK or BD.

Absolutely love Sir Roger Moore!  I'm a big fan of The Saint and The Persuaders and he was also 007 when I was growing up.  He's been on TV a lot here lately and he's got such a great sense of humour still even though he's now well into his 80s.  He's also done so much for charity in particular Unicef raising tens of millions of pounds.

Personally, I'd love to have Marbletown replaced, coz it is played so long.  We can have two songs in that duration.

Yes.  It isn't a fitting finale to the show like Speedway was last year.

T'was just a rumour. BIA or SFA does no great difference to me, on both songs I will probably go on auto-pilot...

LE
I beg to differ.
SFA is an overplayed average song.
BIA is a true masterpiece, one of the top 5 from the DS days... my wife's favourite :) glad to have it back !

Agree that Speedway could be a better finale. Let's get rid of Sonny Liston or DWB, or both,  and have Speedway played after Marbletown.  ;D
I may possibly the last one on earth who would ask for a Marbletown replacement. It sounds fresh and new to me every time I listen to a new version.
Fresh and new also when it's a version I've listened  a hundred times.

However,in theory it could be a good idea to replace Marbletown.  The question is replaced by what ?
Silvertown Blues ? It never rains ? Are we in trouble now ?
Indeed we may be in big trouble if he replaces Marbletown...
We all know every time there is a replacement, the winners are DWB, Knoxville, Sonny, SFA...  :disbelief

Replace it with Junkie Doll;  it would give Coxy a chance to shine too.  Always liked that song.

Marbletown is actually a very good song to play LIVE.  It gives other members of the band the opportunity to show off their skills. Also it's quite riveting to see and hear the face off between John and Glen. I quite enjoy it.  I think the song that should be replaced is "Daddy gone to Knoxville"

Replace it with " punish the monkey"  BTW: has this song ever been played LIVE?

It wasn't really a typical shopping mall.
The arena is a standalone building that was constructed several years ago.
In the surrounding blocks, they are building condos/apartments that are 2-3 stories high with retail shops/small restaurants on the ground floor. There is also a boutique-type hotel 2 blocks away. There is a parking garage nearby and a stop for the train system.
There were bunny rabbits everywhere around the arena, which has some native plants along the east side that faces out on a roadway. They provided entertainment while waiting for the show.
It is only 10 miles or so from downtown Denver.
As you can see from the next night's setlist, BIA replaced Haul Away on this night. Not sure why. I was quite surprised to hear it, but the audience of Bob fans seemed to enjoy hearing something they were familiar with.

Kind of a strange thing happened for me both nights of the Broomfield show. I bought my tickets on MK.com and purchased the less expensive ones because I figured Bob fans would get all the best seats anyway, which is what happened. The tickets I was to have were on the side, 7 and 8 rows up.
But when I picked up my tickets, I was upgraded the first night to Row 2 on the floor right in front of John McCusker and the second night to Row 11 on the floor, almost dead center even with MK.
Some other people were also upgraded next to me the first night, but then ushers came and told them someone else had those seats so they were to be moved. They had somehow rearranged seats that morning. The people who were moved into Row 2 next to me had also been upgraded, ao I'm not sure why the others had to move as they all had upgraded tickets. The staff then filled in the center aisle with seats in Row 3 and put the people who were relocated a second time there, right behind us. They left me in the Row 2 seat, which was wonderful for me.
The guy next to me on the other side, in Row 2 the first night, was a Bob fan and member of his fan club but chose to buy his ticket through the venue rather than through the fan club, and he got the second row, amongst those who bought through the fan club. They all knew each other. But he thought he was better off having bought from the arena than he would have been if he'd gotten his ticket online from the fan club. I don't know. That's just what he said.
The arena staff was busy stopping people from taking cellphone pictures, but people kept doing it anyway, though I didn't see any larger cameras.

Val, of course!!!
It was great fun to see them, as always -- especially being so much closer than I expected to be.
I would have loved it if cameras had been allowed, as they are for most MK shows, because I could have probably gotten some decent shots from that distance.

How was MK and the band's performance, because I heard there was some kind of technical problem, which was put right for the second show - was this apparent?     Also how was Bob?    Anyway, I'm glad you had good seats and had a good time!    :)

The performances were wonderful. Everything and more that you expect from these guys.
The first night, there was a bit of distortion from the bass for Glenn and Mark. It went on all night but wasn't awful and may just have been in the speakers in front of me. The second night it was fine, but on HFB, MK's vocals had a bit of an echo to them. He made a face or two when it happened, so I'm sure he heard it, but he was able to keep going perfectly.
I stayed through the fifth Dylan song each night. That's the one MK played on the first night. The second night, he didn't guest on Bob's show.
I got only 6 1/2 hours sleep over 4 days and drove about 1,200 miles, so I didn't stay through Bob's shows.

I noticed that too!  A little different, adding his own in places.

Another difference in recent shows is during Marks solo where he interacts with Glenn a little just before going back into his vocals.  Still wish he'd drop the song though! ;D

I noticed a little "yelp" from MK's guitar in one of the solos - it was a tingle moment!   :)

Sonny Liston has not been a favourite of mine, but if it continues to evolve in this way, I don't mind it staying!    ;)

There was a "yelp" during Crows, but it was between verses in the vocal, not the actual solo.  Maybe this is what you mean? :-\

Vgonis, you have a good eye. Dave Shumway is a photography professor at a small college in Montana, where he can be close to Yellowstone.  He went to the park every month for about 5 years and interrupted his streak only to spend a month or more in Alaska this summer.
I am humbled that you like some of my shots.

Knopfing, Greece doesn't have a tradition in wild life photography, and actually it is missing from most if not all photography courses. I am always amazed by it and even though my equipment are not suitable for such photography (no tele lenses at all), I always try to go in such wild life trips, just for the feel of it. US photographers have a tradition, and now with the digital technology that allows you to see things on the spot and try again  and the high ISO it must be heaven!  I wish I had the equipment, time and money to do such a big trip.
There are lots more to see! I guess I am a bit more in photography than Knopfler, but don't let anybody know!  ;)

I have an entry-level DSLR with a 100-400 lens and don't really understand how to use what I have.  I "get lucky now and then" with my shots, and in Yellowstone, the wildlife is often fairly close.
When I ride my horse around here, I use a point-and-shoot camera and sometimes get some decent wildlife shots.
My MK pictures are with a point-and-shoot.

I, too have an 5D mkII, and a couple reliable lenses, but up to 105mm. Athens used to have many nice wild life mountains close to Athens but are were all burnt in the last 30 years, so you have to drive at least 150km to get to the nearest forest or wildlife reserve. With the gas and road tolls up there we are imprisoned in this city. When I find the time I will upload some nature (no animals) photos in my flickr account.
I was lucky to be able to pass my small DSLR Rebel tri camera in the MK Athens concert. I asked for permission, (I was working for a magazine back then) but for some strange reason (MK's management allowed it provided you didn't bother any other fans) I was refused.
The lens I had with some bottles of water, the camera in my wife's purse.  ;D
