Not sure if we have a thread like this already, but I just wanted to talk about some other guitar players, Joe satriani for starters, I know many think he is a simple shredder, but of the so called shredders I find him to be the most interesting soulful players, by far!
For starters, something unusual:

Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, Petrucci... I can't stand these guys. In my opinion that's not art, that's sports. I don't mean to be rude but shredders get on my nerves...

I have always thought, if you like Mark Knopfler as a guitar player you would like Mike Oldfield. He is a Strat player, he even owns a Mark Knopfler signature Strat, plays fingerstyle, highly melodic, and equally good on acoustic and electric guitar. Check out the solo below from Moonlight Shadow, the solo starts at 3:34, he even does a Sultans of Swing thing at 4:36
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqwlwmMOpZ4&index=34&list=FLmIid16mnILK7-ZvjF8DF5A (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqwlwmMOpZ4&index=34&list=FLmIid16mnILK7-ZvjF8DF5A)
Also, this beautiful track from the re-made Tubular Bells from 2003
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj1SjcraVb8&list=FLmIid16mnILK7-ZvjF8DF5A&index=57 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj1SjcraVb8&list=FLmIid16mnILK7-ZvjF8DF5A&index=57)
Finally, you can watch the great man play acoustic guitar, the video quality is not great, but the music and guitar playing is outstanding

Wrong, I get your general drift, but pls do not put the satch in that group of speedfreaks. Playing fast is "easy" but Joe has that extra bit, called "da feels"

That must be the worst version of moonlight shadow ever, and I live the song. That singer, nope. And that microphone, horrible . But yea, generally kinda like Mike oldfield

Once a friend forced me into listening to that silver surfer album. There were TWO songs that I was kinda enjoying but then he starts throwing those thousands of meaningless notes, hammer-ons, pull-offs and noises at me and I'm gone. It's like he always has to resort to that fast shit - as Mark refers to that - to impress. I don't know, every time I come across him or any of those guys playing I instantly think: small d*** lol
My first guitar teacher once said to me: a bend played by Gilmour is worth a thousand times more than an entire Steve Vai album. I will always second that!
-
I would not call it the worst Moonlight Shadow ever, but I do agree that it is better with Maggie Reilly singing. I just showed it as an example of Mike playing, and Mike is a wonderful player.

I hate Satriani & co. Sorr y Pottel but I agree with Eddie : to me, Satriani sounds like all other shredders from this era
I love Mike Oldfield : not only a great guitarist, but a multi-instrumentis, a great compser and an amazing melodist
talking about other guitarists, I think I already said who I like : Gilmour, Hendrix, EC, SRV, Mick Taylor, Santana, Richards, Cooder, Krieger, Harrison, Beck, King, Page, Blackmore, Allman, Trucks, Young, Stills, Gibbons, Hackett, Howe, Robertson....
I like listen to John Mayer, but imho he is just imitating SRV and Hendrix, nothing really new in the guitar history

My trinity will always be Knopfler, Clapton and Gilmour. I also like Vaughn (the real one, his brother is the worst guitarist I've ever seen), Beck, May, Santana, Moore, Gill, King (both BB and Freddie)... over the last 20 years or so the only newcomers that impressed me were Mayer, Urban, Lang and Trucks.
I like some brazilian guitarists too: Lulu Santos, Herbert Vianna (huge fan of Mark's) and Roberto Frejat.
Unfortunatelly the instrument is vanishing. Young musicians either don't bother to study, evolve and become decent guitar players or go electronic.

For all those who dislike Satriani... I don't like his music either, but there is this single nice song that is quite good. This exact version, because in the lives he ruins it to show off:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrg-0hlkcGQ
Other than that, Oldfield is really great

You MUST also hear this Italian street artist: Beppe Maniglia

Knopfler, Clapton, Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher... All of them at the top.

My guitarist trinity is Knopfler, Oldfield, Gilmour. I have not heard any other players that get to me as much as those 3.
I don't hear much feel from Satriani generally, when compared to the trio above, however, there is one track where he does have some, but then it does go mad for a bit half way through:

I find some of this guitar battle interesting

Not that I can tell them apart but from what it's written in the comments it looks like I fancy mostly Timmons and then Petrucci. Others do not appeal to me.
