Long Cool Girl (Mark Knopfler)

LYRICS
All I do is think of you
As I go around the world
All I do is think of you
Long, cool girl

Long, cool girl
I like to say her name
Long, cool girl
With a showgirl frame

You took a look at me
I took a look at you
Now I just can’t see
What a man’s supposed to do

Long, cool girl
I like to say her name
Long, cool girl
With a showgirl frame

Me and you we’re 3 and 2
Something’s gonna happen now, it has to
Me and you we’re 3 and 2
Something’s gonna happen now, it has to

Pressure drop and weather change
All around the world
You got me at point blank range
Long, cool girl

Long, cool girl
I like to say her name
Long, cool girl
With a showgirl frame

All I do is think of you
As I go around the world
All I do is think of you
Long, cool girl

I hope the rhyming is better in this one than Illsley's Young Girl: "This young girl / I know she will get far / This young girl / Is driving my car"

I keep getting "Long cool woman in a black dress" by The Hollies in my head when I see that title.  :)

I have my doubts that Long Cool Girl will be as equally cool, please prove me wrong MK!

Young Girl is about Illsley's daughter.

Intro reminds me of Romeo & Juliet Live, the part after: " you and me babe, how about it"

Young Girl is about Illsley's daughter.

Do you see any chance it could be about his wife?

John says it's about his daughter on his Live in London CD ;)

I'm convinced this song is based on Romeo & Juliet. The intro is very similar to the live intro of R&J and as noted above there are throwbacks to later parts of R&J too.

"All I do is think of you, As I go around the world" - reference to performing it whilst touring? Who knows..

Agree Banjo99uk and foma.
check your PM for my heart felt view of this track. It was my outright favorite on 1st listen.

Agree very 80's in all aspects. Maybe will replace R&J live.
Wonder if Guy can get his vocals that high?

While listening to this song I got a feeling as if I was spattered with droplets of tenderness.  :)
It was something warm and iridescent like an unlooked-for blessing, just a quiet splash of happiness.

The almost forgotten feeling, yeah...

Definitely 10 out of 10

I agree ! Some would call the song boring but it has really grown on me, it calms me down (which I really need at the moment).
Do you know what it reminds me of ? Six Blade Knife !! Cool, slow burning...

I like this one very much. Mark's electric rhythm guitar is what I was really missing in the past. Richard is cool, don't get me wrong, but the only thing for me that is better than Mark on guitar is Mark on two guitars, or on three :)  Like on all that Making Movies stuff and such.

I'm sorry to bring this up again, but I simply don't get it.
For me the lyrics only make sense with regard to Kitty but I can't find anything in them that would make sense with regard to JI's daughter although he said that on his live album.
Can anyone help?

Thanks, this seems to be very likely. I was thinking about that sometimes two things added together add up to more than just two (example was Mark and Emmy singing, it was more than just the two voices, there was something new added, hope you know what I mean..)

Long before I saw the picture of his wife Kitty when she was younger on the CD along with the lyrics, I guessed that the Long Cool Girl was his third wife!! He seems to have found in her all what he was looking for!! We always say in french Jamais 2 sans 3!! That last one is the perfect match!!! Happy for him that he found the real one and it shows on him now that he is happily married as it did after he met her :thumbsup

But also a charm of the hidden meaning is gone.
:)

I understand perfectly well, what do you mean.
I also love to dig in the inner recesses of meanings and rake over fallen leaves.

And yet... there's hardly anything as touching as an elderly couple that's still keeping the freshness of their feelings, staying forever young for each other.

First I was touched to tears, and then it turned out that it's my favourite song from Tracker.  :)

I am not really convinced of 2 and 3 standing for the number of  marriages.
I guess Mark is refering to some mythology of numbers, e.g. in Chinese Daoism philosophy 2 stands for polarity (yin and yang) while the 3 (heaven / earth / man) stands for resolving polarity. Both numbers are essential for themselves but will combine to be 'more', like me and you, or man & woman, hope this makes some sense

I really think it's about Aluminum and Oxygen bonding together, you need three of one and two of the other, one is shiny the other is a diatomic gas - it all makes sense the more you think about it.

Funny how it works. First time I heard this track I immediately thought about the slow-down section of live versions of Sultans, you know the part that builds up from the very slow only-piano part to a faster pace three chord symphony which explodes later into the playout of SOS. Mark plays this little theme there that just fits perfectly into those first few bars of Long Cool Girl. The key and chord sequence is the same too.

So there it is, another DS link / association in this brilliant song.

Very well described. I fell in love with it, too, on the very first listen. The idea of making it sounding like an improvisation coming from playing around (and the live outro of Romeo & Juliet is definitely also in there somewhere).

:hmm  :think I must admit that the Liner notes/booklets have never been a major part of my attention on the releases of albums over the years. We tend to see the lyrics, now tabs/chords almost before we hear the music these days. So my question is:- "Is this the 1st time a member of Mark's family has featured in a booklet/tour guide or other merchandise? Did the Heart locket pertaining to the GH release have a picture inside it?

I always wondered about that, LE.  The twins were very blonde when they were young, so it could have been the blonde boy in the video - must watch it again!   :think    I'm pretty dubious about it though, because MK always kept his boys out of the limelight.   ;)

To be fair i don't think Mark is singing with the same intensity (so possibly meaning) as Little Richard. I think it's just poetic. Long, tends to imply long legs, but I wouldn't dwell on it ! :)

Regarding the prior discussion of "me and you, we're three and two" might have another meaning. In baseball, three and two (or better, 3-2) refers to the "count". That means that the hitter gets a free pass to first base (base on balls, or walk) if he doesn't swing the bat at a bad pitch out of the strike zone. If the hitter swings and misses, or doesn't swing at a good pitch is the strike zone three times, then he "strikes out" and that counts as an "out". A "full count", when the count is 3-2 means that the next pitch will result in either a hit ball, or a strike or walk. That's why they call it "the payoff pitch", since something has got to happen!

So I think that fits in perfectly with the rest of Mark's line, "something's gonna happen now, it has to".

Also, remember that Mark has previously made reference to baseball in "The Bug" - "sometimes your a Louisville Slugger baby, (a popular bat) sometimes your the ball".

Any thoughts?

You may be onto something, Saul, given that MK likes to play around with phrases that have multiple meanings.  He could be saying to his "long cool girl" that since they are "3 and 2" in marriages that they might as well go for broke and try to "hit it out of the park" on this marriage, using the baseball analogy.

Given that the love for his long cool girl is so apparant in this song, I would guess that he considers this marriage to be a home run!

:clap :thumbsup Yes the baseball analogy fits perfectly with their previous marriage numbers. The song has a real "Hopeless Romantic" feel to it. That is the search term that I Googled to find the footage for our LCG Video. Every guitar phrase and the lyrics speak to me of someone who's very happy with having hit a home run.

I was always that bit of curious about what was being said in the beginning (someone asks Mark a question, and Mark replies with a quick “Yeah").  I tried to make it out but absolutely could not.  :think Well, a few months after Tracker was released, I was listening to Long Cool Girl while driving, and some words just popped out.  I won’t post it now, as I don’t want to possibly influence what someone else can hear.  But has anyone else been able to recognize what is being said?

I think Mark says "right", then mumbling, then Guy replies "Yeah". Haven't tried to figure out the mumbling  :)

In response to the above dilemmas about the words:
- Long cool girl
- Me and you we are 3 and 2 something's gonna happen now, it has to

Long has nothing to do with how tall kitty is or to the cynical reference to the number of marriages they had. This is a very romantic song!!! Long  needs to be read in conjunction with cool. It simply means 'very' cool. However reference is not made to the intensity of 'cool' rather to how it usually this attributes fakes over time in people lives. Think about any person you know. How many of the people you found to be cool 15 years or 25 years ago are still cool to you now? Mark wanted to stress the uniqueness of kitty's attraction over him by making a very thoughtful comment about the long term effect of the attribute cool. In other words: she is amazing as a person!More than her beauty, more than the time when she used to be beautiful and famous as an actress since she managed to retain the same great features she struck Mark with in the mid 90ies.

3 and 2. I have thought about it millions of times. I came to the following conclusion.
MK usually write songs in stages over long time. He rarely write the lyric of a new song over a period of few months. I think he either started writing this song before the second daughter was born or he is putting himself back in time (few years ago) to a time when the only children he had were his twins and his older daughter. 'Me and you we are 3 and 2 (3 boys and 2 girls). It's an odd combination and we still love each other very much hence something must happen! It has two: the birth of another daughter....'

Hi, all.  I am wondering if there might be some confusion concerning the phrase "something is gonna happen now it has two."  I know that some non-native English speakers may be unaware of it, but in the English language, either side of the pond, there are three forms of the word "to."  They are to, two and too.  In the spoken language, they all sound the same, it is only context that makes it understandable as to what is meant.  The word "to" means identifying motion or something or someone that is affected.  "Two" is the second number, and "too" is inclusive, or also.  The sleeve notes, just as shangri la 1's posting at the beginning of the song, uses "to."  That would seem to indicate with three and two, something has to happen or is affected.  We might infer other meanings, but I think we have to use what he actually wrote!  :smack

Indeed you are correct.
The lyrics are: something's gonna happen now it has to.
My reference to it was only a typo. The interpretation accounts for the correct word.

I agree that the line would not be about marriages, however, Shai's interpretation makes most sense to me:

But as typical with so many of his lyrics, there are likely multiple meanings. My gosh, even something as simple as 'me' and 'you' having three and two letters.

Sounds most plausible, I agree. Only thing that disturbs me about it is ... isn't Baseball a pure American thing? Would he choose a picture like this? However, he already  did so earlier.. remember the Louisville slugger?

Maybe is not about baseball but cricket?

I don't know anything about Cricket but looks like a game similar to Baseball to me...

Could it just be so because it rhymes? :lol

Paul Simon often put stuff in his songs just for the sake of rhyming and not always it should makes any sense.

Well that's the difference between MK and Paul Simon ...

Really? I think it's the best song on Tracker and one of my favourite songs Mark's ever written. It has a beautiful melody and very evocative lyrics. The acoustic guitar riff at the beggining still haunts me! :)

I agree with Dusty. The only reason it is in the record is because is about his wife... I don't like it at all, sounds boring and repetitive to me. I ALWAYS skip it.

Do you also skip Six Blade Knife on the first DS album ? Because I think it has similar structure...
I love Long Cool Girl, best song on the album for me, the first one to stick in my head. It does not seem to be at first, it is simple and repetitive, but so... peaceful. Just like A Place We Used to Live, but more joyful. Love it !

Six blade knife was original and fresh. Long cool girl is a song 37 years after that is not original at all and repetitive, boring etc FOR ME.

Agree, Six Blade Knife has a really cool vibe, space for the instruments to breathe. Never a skipper. LCG, always a skipper. FOR ME. :)

I agree that the intro is quite nice, that guitar licks, but then when the song starts... specially with that mellow slide... :thumbsdown
