I got this message on Facebook : MK wrote a song : Oldest surfer on the beach, on the next J. Buffet album, out on the 20th august !
-
Yawn...

Yawn...
Why "Yawn"?
Don't you think that's some kind of interesting news on AMIT? i think it's much more useful than discussing about which chord can be seen on which picture.. I wasn't aware of MK writing a song for Buffett, this, so thank a lot to El Macho!

I get the feeling that this is a leftover from Shangri-La :)
-
LE, this is great news indeed, but it's just 25 lines of text and a date.
I can't say anything about that, especially given the fact that I'm not English-speaking person and I can't really discuss poetic quality of this lyrics. But I can discuss chords, because music is a truly universal language! Just kidding, take it easy!
Will wait for a song. I hope it's not a slow folk tune with a violin like many of recent Mark's collaborations was...
-
100% agree with Foma
we are not all comfortable with english language, so for some of us it's easier to talk about chords than lyrics.
Sorry if it seems not "usefull", but I understand that there are many guitar freaks here, so I think that some could be interested.
Finally, if we can't discuss about guitar, chords, and so on on a Mark Knopfler forum, well, I don't know where we can...
Ok I go back to Ingo's one...
-
JF, my question was more about the "yawn" related to the definitely interesting news about Mk doing another collaboration... however exactly that term comes to MY mind reading about guitar chords... but each of his own of course. Please just look at MK's hand on a guitar and guess which chord it is - I couldn't care less.. I know that foma for example has great skills on the guitar, on chords and that he has very much contributed to this forum by giving the chords of the Privateering songs for example, not to forget his great YouTube videos.
So if you feel offended by my earlier post, I apologize. But I give reason to think that El Macho himself could feel offended when he opens a new thread and the first post on it is "yawn"...
So did you know this Buffet news already for years and therefore "yawn", or do you think Buffets music is "yawn" or is the news itself just "yawn"?

LE, no soucy. I apologize too, I must admit I replied a bit quickly... :-[
I understand your point of view. But I'm sorry to say that news about a new song by Mark on another artist's album with maybe some guitar almost barely to hear (if I take examples of Mark's recent collaborations) made me think more "yawn" than talking about what chord is played on Tupelo.... I know, it's just a matter of taste.
As for if El Macho felt offended, maybe is it to him to respond...

Thanks for posting El Macho -- I am looking forward to hearing this collaboration!!

Its great news, specially because is a MK song.

Looks like Our-Shangri-La 2...

I didn't mean to start any controversy. No offense meant to anyone, except Jimmy Buffett. The "yawn" was meant for Mr. Buffett, and to express my frustration that Mark doesn't work with someone a little more edgy. So Buffett's music is definitely "yawn", making this news itself somewhat "yawn", imho.
-
OK! I was not into Buffet at all and have just started to watch some of his videos yesterday on YouTube, and apart from the "cool" surfer mentality and the good fun/mood on the beach ... you could be right... Must have a deeper view.
However, a surfer who's music I really like is this one:

I'm not the right man to explain english language, but if I correctly understand, I would say that "yawn" ("bailler" "baillement" in french) would mean :
"not interesting", "boring", "sigh"..... ::)
as for the song's lyrics, it looks like shangi-la indeed.
I love this song.
I already loved the 2006 version with Duncan's violin and Matt's piano, but the 2013 version with Nigel's sax is beautiful too.
since few days, I'm into 2005 stuff, and I'd say that 2005 versions are a bit too rough, the guitar tone is too much drived for this song IMHO.
2006 and 2013 tones are way better, more etheral, fit more to songs lyrics I think.
LE, good song I like it :thumbsup

Well done, JF, -- I think you explained "yawn" very well. :D
And LE.. many thanks for that feel-good video... NICE!

Mark Reunites with Jimmy Buffet
Seven years after Mark appeared on Jimmy Buffett's album, Take The Weather With You, the two have come together again for Songs From St. Somewhere. Mark contributes both his guitar prowess and songwriting skills on the track 'Oldest Surfer On The Beach'.
Buffett's forthcoming album will hit stores on August 20 and features 16 tracks, including a bonus Spanish version of 'I Want To Go Back To Cartagena'.
Stay tuned to MarkKnopfler.com and Mailboat Records for more info on when you'll be able to order Songs From St. Somewhere."

Jimmy does a hell of a good "Southern Cross" by Steven Stills.. A very erudite business man too. Great entertainer.

Yes and it's as beautiful as Ticket to Heaven, too.

Melody reminds me of Ticket to Heaven
yes agree.
ticket to heaven's melody + our shangri-la's tone and arrangement
nothing really exciting IMHO, altough I love the song our shnagri-la (but not really ticket to heaven)
-
It's a good song! :)
Fresh and nice guitar licks by Mark (KTGC plectrum style)
-
Not too impressed
-
Not impressed at all :)
-
I think it's not bad at all, middle of the road fare.
I also thought JB was going to start singing OSL because the lyrics are the same at the very start!
-
The source who got me the song, told me: 'Here's two songs that MK is on that you might not have'
Oldest surfer on the beach was one of them, but the other song was also on the JB album.
It's called 'Rue de la Guitare'.
Does anyone know if this is true?
-
Just listened 'Rue de la Guitare'. Looks like MK played acoustic guitar solo on it. Very good solo though, better than the whole 'Oldest surfer on the beach' song :D
-
Very nice indeed!
Lovely Our-Shangri-La/Ticket to heaven to me....

Acoustisc guitar solo sounds like MK. Reminds me a bit of 'good as gold'
-
You should listen to some old Buffett records from the 70ies, at his heyday. They are good fun, laid back and I think a bit of an influence for our MK, at least his latest solo sound, but also some of DS songs.

It's been a long time since my last visit...
Weel, I have listened to "Oldest surfer..." without knowing that it was Mark's and a i just thought "how knopflerian is this!". Don't remember who posted that it could fit in Shangri-La, but I totally agree.
Afterwards, I couldn't quite recognize MK on "Rue de la guitare"
See you!

There is an acoustic MK solo guitar on that song.
