Pulp, Jarvis Cocker, Glastonbury 2011

Pulp played a birthday tribute to Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler during a festival appearance in Norway last night.

The band kicked off their set at Oslo's Oya Festival with 1994 hit 'Do You Remember The First Time?', before continuing to play a collection of hits from their back catalog.

Following performances of 'Razzmatazz' and 'Disco 2000', frontman Jarvis Cocker told the audience: "Mark Knopfler was born today. Y'know, Dire Straits?"

Cocker then sang some lines from Dire Straits' 1978 classic 'Sultans of Swing', before commenting: "C'mon Mark, put your headband on.

"I thought, as a tribute, we'll do our own version of that song. Yeah, it's an exclusive! We are the Sultans."

Pulp then performed a full cover of the track, with Cocker concluding: "Yeah, Sultans are sweet."

Yeah, Pulp are an amazing band led by the awesome Jarvis Cocker. Again it's just another band/musician paying tribute to Knopfler. He really is so highly regarded by many different musicians. I love these sorts of tributes.

A long time ago came a man on the track......

knopfling,

Thank you for posting this.  It's so nice to read about it.  Wonder if there would be a clip on Youtube ?

Someone added on Facebook that they were at the concert and that they said they would but in the end didn't play Sultans after all.  They played the song Babies instead apparently.
"I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order."

Thanks for posting Knopfling. It's always nice to read and hear that also other artists like the music of Mark/DS!

They didn't play Sultans according to this website:

"I could play my accordion And charm all of the women And dance round the taproom With a chair in my teeth"
